Chapter 18
Babylon Is Fallen
1
After this I saw another angel descending from heaven with great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his glory.
Μετὰ ταῦτα εἶδον ἄλλον ἄγγελον καταβαίνοντα ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἔχοντα μεγάλην ἐξουσίαν καὶ ἡ γῆ ἐφωτίσθη ἐκ αὐτοῦ τῆς δόξης Meta tauta eidon allon angelon katabainonta ek tou ouranou echonta megalēn exousian kai hē gē ephōtisthē ek autou tēs doxēs — NA/TR · 1

And he cried out in a mighty voice -: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a lair for demons and a haunt for every unclean spirit, - every unclean bird, and every - detestable beast.
καὶ ἔκραξεν ἐν ἰσχυρᾷ φωνῇ λέγων Ἔπεσεν ἔπεσεν Βαβυλὼν ἡ μεγάλη καὶ ἐγένετο κατοικητήριον δαιμονίων καὶ φυλακὴ παντὸς ἀκαθάρτου πνεύματος καὶ φυλακὴ παντὸς ἀκαθάρτου ὀρνέου καὶ φυλακὴ παντὸς ἀκαθάρτου καὶ μεμισημένου θηρίου kai ekraxen en ischyra phōnē legōn Epesen epesen Babylōn hē megalē kai egeneto katoikētērion daimoniōn kai phylakē pantos akathartou pneumatos kai phylakē pantos akathartou orneou kai phylakē pantos akathartou kai memisēmenou thēriou — NA/TR · 2

- All the nations have drunk the wine of the passion of her immorality. The kings of the earth were immoral with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown wealthy from the extravagance of her luxury.
ὅτι πάντα τὰ ἔθνη πέπωκαν ἐκ τοῦ οἴνου τοῦ θυμοῦ τῆς αὐτῆς πορνείας καὶ οἱ βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς ἐπόρνευσαν μετ’ αὐτῆς καὶ οἱ ἔμποροι τῆς γῆς ἐπλούτησαν ἐκ τῆς δυνάμεως τοῦ αὐτῆς στρήνους hoti panta ta ethnē pepōkan ek tou oinou tou thymou tēs autēs porneias kai hoi basileis tēs gēs eporneusan met’ autēs kai hoi emporoi tēs gēs eploutēsan ek tēs dynameōs tou autēs strēnous — NA/TR · 3

Then I heard another voice from heaven say: “Come out of her, My people, so that vvv you will not share in her sins [or] vvv contract [any] of her plagues.
Καὶ ἤκουσα ἄλλην φωνὴν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ λέγουσαν Ἐξέλθατε ἐξ αὐτῆς μου ὁ λαός ἵνα μὴ συνκοινωνήσητε ταῖς αὐτῆς ἁμαρτίαις καὶ ἵνα μὴ λάβητε ἐκ αὐτῆς τῶν πληγῶν Kai ēkousa allēn phōnēn ek tou ouranou legousan Exelthate ex autēs mou ho laos hina mē synkoinōnēsēte tais autēs hamartiais kai hina mē labēte ek autēs tōn plēgōn — NA/TR · 4

For her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.
ὅτι αὐτῆς αἱ ἁμαρτίαι ἐκολλήθησαν ἄχρι τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ὁ Θεὸς ἐμνημόνευσεν αὐτῆς τὰ ἀδικήματα hoti autēs hai hamartiai ekollēthēsan achri tou ouranou kai ho Theos emnēmoneusen autēs ta adikēmata — NA/TR · 5

Give back to her as she has done [to others]; pay her back… double for what she has done; mix her a double [portion] in [her own] cup -.
ἀπόδοτε αὐτῇ ὡς αὐτὴ καὶ ἀπέδωκεν καὶ διπλώσατε τὰ διπλᾶ κατὰ αὐτῆς τὰ ἔργα κεράσατε αὐτῇ διπλοῦν ἐν τῷ ποτηρίῳ ᾧ ἐκέρασεν apodote autē hōs autē kai apedōken kai diplōsate ta dipla kata autēs ta erga kerasate autē diploun en tō potēriō hō ekerasen — NA/TR · 6

As much as she has glorified herself and lived in luxury, give her the same measure of torment and grief. In her heart she says -, ‘I sit [as] queen; I am not a widow and {will} never… see grief.
ὅσα ἐδόξασεν αὑτὴν καὶ ἐστρηνίασεν δότε αὐτῇ τοσοῦτον βασανισμὸν καὶ πένθος ὅτι ἐν αὐτῆς τῇ καρδίᾳ λέγει ὅτι Κάθημαι βασίλισσα καὶ εἰμί οὐκ χήρα καὶ οὐ μὴ ἴδω πένθος hosa edoxasen hautēn kai estrēniasen dote autē tosouton basanismon kai penthos hoti en autēs tē kardia legei hoti Kathēmai basilissa kai eimi ouk chēra kai ou mē idō penthos — NA/TR · 7

Therefore… her plagues will come in one day— death and grief and famine— and she will be consumed by fire, for mighty [is the] Lord God who judges her.
διὰ τοῦτο αὐτῆς αἱ πληγαὶ ἥξουσιν ἐν μιᾷ ἡμέρᾳ θάνατος καὶ πένθος καὶ λιμός καὶ κατακαυθήσεται ἐν πυρὶ ὅτι ἰσχυρὸς Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς ὁ κρίνας αὐτήν dia touto autēs hai plēgai hēxousin en mia hēmera thanatos kai penthos kai limos kai katakauthēsetai en pyri hoti ischyros Kyrios ho Theos ho krinas autēn — NA/TR · 8
Lament over Babylon

Then the kings of the earth who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her will weep and wail at vvv the sight of the smoke [rising] from the fire that consumes her.
Καὶ οἱ βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς οἱ πορνεύσαντες καὶ στρηνιάσαντες μετ’ αὐτῆς κλαύσουσιν καὶ κόψονται ἐπ’ αὐτὴν ὅταν βλέπωσιν τὸν καπνὸν τῆς πυρώσεως αὐτῆς Kai hoi basileis tēs gēs hoi porneusantes kai strēniasantes met’ autēs klausousin kai kopsontai ep’ autēn hotan blepōsin ton kapnon tēs pyrōseōs autēs — NA/TR · 9

In fear of her torment, they will stand at a distance [and] cry out: “Woe, woe to the great city, the mighty city of Babylon! For [in] a single hour your judgment has come.
διὰ τὸν φόβον τοῦ αὐτῆς βασανισμοῦ ἑστηκότες ἀπὸ μακρόθεν λέγοντες Οὐαὶ οὐαί ἡ ἡ μεγάλη πόλις ἡ ἡ ἰσχυρά πόλις Βαβυλὼν ὅτι μιᾷ ὥρᾳ σου ἡ κρίσις ἦλθεν dia ton phobon tou autēs basanismou hestēkotes apo makrothen legontes Ouai ouai hē hē megalē polis hē hē ischyra polis Babylōn hoti mia hōra sou hē krisis ēlthen — NA/TR · 10

And the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, because [there is] no one left to buy their cargo—

cargo of gold, silver, precious stones, and pearls; [of] fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet; of all kinds of citron wood and every article of ivory, - - precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble;

- of cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, and frankincense; of wine, olive oil, fine flour, and wheat; of cattle, sheep, horses, and carriages; of bodies and souls of [slaves].
καὶ κιννάμωμον καὶ ἄμωμον καὶ θυμιάματα καὶ μύρον καὶ λίβανον καὶ οἶνον καὶ ἔλαιον καὶ σεμίδαλιν καὶ σῖτον καὶ κτήνη καὶ πρόβατα καὶ ἵππων καὶ ῥεδῶν καὶ σωμάτων καὶ ψυχὰς ἀνθρώπων kai kinnamōmon kai amōmon kai thymiamata kai myron kai libanon kai oinon kai elaion kai semidalin kai siton kai ktēnē kai probata kai hippōn kai rhedōn kai sōmatōn kai psychas anthrōpōn — NA/TR · 13

And [they will say]: “The fruit of your soul’s desire has departed from you; all [your] luxury and splendor have vanished -, vvv vvv never to be [seen] [again].
Καὶ ἡ ὀπώρα σου τῆς ψυχῆς τῆς ἐπιθυμίας ἀπῆλθεν ἀπὸ σοῦ καὶ πάντα τὰ λιπαρὰ καὶ τὰ λαμπρὰ ἀπώλετο ἀπὸ σοῦ καὶ οὐ μὴ εὑρήσουσιν αὐτὰ οὐκέτι Kai hē opōra sou tēs psychēs tēs epithymias apēlthen apo sou kai panta ta lipara kai ta lampra apōleto apo sou kai ou mē heurēsousin auta ouketi — NA/TR · 14

The merchants who sold these things [and] gained their wealth from her will stand at a distance, in fear of her torment. They will weep and mourn,

saying: “Woe, woe to the great city, clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls!

For [in] a single hour such fabulous wealth has been destroyed! Every shipmaster, - passenger…, and sailor, and all who make their living from the sea, will stand at a distance
ὅτι μιᾷ ὥρᾳ ὁ τοσοῦτος πλοῦτος ἠρημώθη Καὶ πᾶς κυβερνήτης καὶ πᾶς ὁ πλέων ἐπὶ τόπον καὶ ναῦται καὶ ὅσοι ἐργάζονται τὴν θάλασσαν ἔστησαν ἀπὸ μακρόθεν hoti mia hōra ho tosoutos ploutos ērēmōthē Kai pas kybernētēs kai pas ho pleōn epi topon kai nautai kai hosoi ergazontai tēn thalassan estēsan apo makrothen — NA/TR · 17

and cry out at the sight of the smoke [rising] from the fire that consumes her. “What [city was ever] like [this] great city? they will exclaim.
καὶ ἔκραζον βλέποντες τὸν καπνὸν τῆς πυρώσεως αὐτῆς Τίς ὁμοία τῇ τῇ μεγάλῃ πόλει λέγοντες kai ekrazon blepontes ton kapnon tēs pyrōseōs autēs Tis homoia tē tē megalē polei legontes — NA/TR · 18

Then they will throw dust on their heads as they weep and mourn and cry out…: “Woe, woe to the great city, vvv [where] all who had ships on the sea were enriched by her wealth! For in a single hour she has been destroyed.

Rejoice over her, O heaven, and [you] saints and apostles and prophets, because God has pronounced for you [His] judgment against her.

The Doom of Babylon

Then a mighty angel picked up a stone the size of a great millstone and cast [it] into the sea, saying: “With such violence the great city of Babylon will be cast down, vvv vvv never to be [seen] again.

And [the] sound of harpists and musicians, of flute players and trumpeters, vvv vvv will never ring out in you again. [Nor will] any craftsmen of any trade vvv vvv be [found] in you again, [nor] [the] sound of a millstone vvv vvv be heard in you again.
καὶ φωνὴ κιθαρῳδῶν καὶ μουσικῶν καὶ αὐλητῶν καὶ σαλπιστῶν οὐ μὴ ἀκουσθῇ ἐν σοὶ ἔτι καὶ πᾶς τεχνίτης πάσης τέχνης οὐ μὴ εὑρεθῇ ἐν σοὶ ἔτι καὶ φωνὴ μύλου οὐ μὴ ἀκουσθῇ ἐν σοὶ ἔτι kai phōnē kitharōdōn kai mousikōn kai aulētōn kai salpistōn ou mē akousthē en soi eti kai pas technitēs pasēs technēs ou mē heurethē en soi eti kai phōnē mylou ou mē akousthē en soi eti — NA/TR · 22

- [The] light of a lamp vvv vvv will never shine in you again, and [the] voices of a bride and bridegroom vvv vvv will never call out in you again. For your merchants were the great ones of the earth, because all the nations were deceived by your sorcery.
καὶ φῶς λύχνου οὐ μὴ φάνῃ ἐν σοὶ ἔτι καὶ φωνὴ νύμφης καὶ νυμφίου οὐ μὴ ἀκουσθῇ ἐν σοὶ ἔτι ὅτι σου οἱ ἔμποροί ἦσαν οἱ μεγιστᾶνες τῆς γῆς ὅτι πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐπλανήθησαν ἐν σου τῇ φαρμακείᾳ kai phōs lychnou ou mē phanē en soi eti kai phōnē nymphēs kai nymphiou ou mē akousthē en soi eti hoti sou hoi emporoi ēsan hoi megistanes tēs gēs hoti panta ta ethnē eplanēthēsan en sou tē pharmakeia — NA/TR · 23

And there was found in her [the] blood of prophets and saints, and of all who had been slain on the earth.
