Chapter 3

Children of God

1

Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. And [that is what] we are! The reason… the world vvv does not know us [is] that vvv it did not know Him.

Ἴδετε ποταπὴν ἀγάπην ὁ Πατὴρ δέδωκεν ἡμῖν ἵνα κληθῶμεν τέκνα Θεοῦ καὶ ἐσμέν διὰ τοῦτο ὁ κόσμος οὐ γινώσκει ἡμᾶς ὅτι οὐκ ἔγνω αὐτόν Idete potapēn agapēn ho Patēr dedōken hēmin hina klēthōmen tekna Theou kai esmen dia touto ho kosmos ou ginōskei hēmas hoti ouk egnō auton — NA/TR · 1

Beloved, we are now children of God, and what we will be {has} not yet been revealed. We know that when [Christ] appears, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is.

Ἀγαπητοί ἐσμεν νῦν τέκνα Θεοῦ καὶ τί ἐσόμεθα οὔπω ἐφανερώθη οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἐὰν φανερωθῇ ἐσόμεθα ὅμοιοι αὐτῷ ὅτι ὀψόμεθα αὐτὸν καθώς ἐστιν Agapētoi esmen nyn tekna Theou kai ti esometha oupō ephanerōthē oidamen hoti ean phanerōthē esometha homoioi autō hoti opsometha auton kathōs estin — NA/TR · 2

And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as [ Christ ] is pure.

καὶ πᾶς ὁ ἔχων ταύτην τὴν ἐλπίδα ἐπ’ αὐτῷ ἁγνίζει ἑαυτὸν καθὼς ἐκεῖνος ἐστιν ἁγνός kai pas ho echōn tautēn tēn elpida ep’ autō hagnizei heauton kathōs ekeinos estin hagnos — NA/TR · 3

Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness as well. Indeed, sin is lawlessness.

Πᾶς ὁ ποιῶν τὴν ἁμαρτίαν ποιεῖ τὴν ἀνομίαν καὶ καὶ ἡ ἁμαρτία ἐστὶν ἡ ἀνομία Pas ho poiōn tēn hamartian poiei tēn anomian kai kai hē hamartia estin hē anomia — NA/TR · 4

[But] you know that [Christ] appeared to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin.

καὶ οἴδατε ὅτι ἐκεῖνος ἐφανερώθη ἵνα ἄρῃ τὰς ἁμαρτίας καὶ ἐν αὐτῷ ἔστιν οὐκ ἁμαρτία kai oidate hoti ekeinos ephanerōthē hina arē tas hamartias kai en autō estin ouk hamartia — NA/TR · 5

No one… who remains in Him keeps on sinning. No one… who continues to sin has seen Him [or] known Him.

πᾶς οὐχ ὁ μένων ἐν αὐτῷ ἁμαρτάνει πᾶς οὐχ ὁ ἁμαρτάνων ἑώρακεν αὐτὸν οὐδὲ ἔγνωκεν αὐτόν pas ouch ho menōn en autō hamartanei pas ouch ho hamartanōn heōraken auton oude egnōken auton — NA/TR · 6

Little children, {let} no one deceive you: The [one who] practices righteousness is righteous, just as [Christ] is righteous.

Τεκνία μηδεὶς πλανάτω ὑμᾶς ὁ ποιῶν τὴν δικαιοσύνην ἐστιν δίκαιός καθὼς ἐκεῖνος ἐστιν δίκαιός Teknia mēdeis planatō hymas ho poiōn tēn dikaiosynēn estin dikaios kathōs ekeinos estin dikaios — NA/TR · 7

The [one who] practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from [the] very start. This is why… the Son of God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil.

ὁ ποιῶν τὴν ἁμαρτίαν ἐστίν ἐκ τοῦ διαβόλου ὅτι ὁ διάβολος ἁμαρτάνει ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς εἰς τοῦτο ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐφανερώθη ἵνα λύσῃ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ διαβόλου ho poiōn tēn hamartian estin ek tou diabolou hoti ho diabolos hamartanei ap’ archēs eis touto ho Huios tou Theou ephanerōthē hina lysē ta erga tou diabolou — NA/TR · 8

Anyone born of God vvv refuses to practice sin, because [God’s] seed abides in him; vvv he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.

Πᾶς ὁ γεγεννημένος ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐ ποιεῖ ἁμαρτίαν ὅτι αὐτοῦ σπέρμα μένει ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ οὐ δύναται ἁμαρτάνειν ὅτι γεγέννηται ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ Pas ho gegennēmenos ek tou Theou ou poiei hamartian hoti autou sperma menei en autō kai ou dynatai hamartanein hoti gegennētai ek tou Theou — NA/TR · 9

By this the children of God are distinguished [from] the children of the devil: Anyone who vvv does not practice righteousness is not of God, [nor is] anyone who vvv does not love his brother.

ἐν τούτῳ τὰ τέκνα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστιν φανερά καὶ τὰ τέκνα τοῦ διαβόλου πᾶς ὁ μὴ ποιῶν δικαιοσύνην ἔστιν οὐκ ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ ὁ μὴ ἀγαπῶν αὐτοῦ τὸν ἀδελφὸν en toutō ta tekna tou Theou estin phanera kai ta tekna tou diabolou pas ho mē poiōn dikaiosynēn estin ouk ek tou Theou kai ho mē agapōn autou ton adelphon — NA/TR · 10

Love One Another

  • This is the message you have heard from [the] beginning: We should love one another.

Ὅτι αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ ἀγγελία ἣν ἠκούσατε ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς ἵνα ἀγαπῶμεν ἀλλήλους Hoti hautē estin hē angelia hēn ēkousate ap’ archēs hina agapōmen allēlous — NA/TR · 11

[Do] not [be] like Cain, [who] belonged to… the evil [one] and murdered his brother. And why… did [Cain] slay him? Because his [own] deeds were evil, while those of his brother [were] righteous.

οὐ καθὼς Κάϊν ἦν ἐκ τοῦ πονηροῦ καὶ ἔσφαξεν αὐτοῦ τὸν ἀδελφὸν καὶ χάριν τίνος ἔσφαξεν αὐτόν ὅτι αὐτοῦ τὰ ἔργα ἦν πονηρὰ δὲ τὰ τοῦ αὐτοῦ ἀδελφοῦ δίκαια ou kathōs Kain ēn ek tou ponērou kai esphaxen autou ton adelphon kai charin tinos esphaxen auton hoti autou ta erga ēn ponēra de ta tou autou adelphou dikaia — NA/TR · 12

[So] {do} not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.

καὶ Μὴ θαυμάζετε ἀδελφοί εἰ ὁ κόσμος μισεῖ ὑμᾶς kai Mē thaumazete adelphoi ei ho kosmos misei hymas — NA/TR · 13

We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love [our] brothers. The [one who] vvv does not love remains in death.

Ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι μεταβεβήκαμεν ἐκ τοῦ θανάτου εἰς τὴν ζωήν ὅτι ἀγαπῶμεν τοὺς ἀδελφούς ὁ μὴ ἀγαπῶν μένει ἐν τῷ θανάτῳ Hēmeis oidamen hoti metabebēkamen ek tou thanatou eis tēn zōēn hoti agapōmen tous adelphous ho mē agapōn menei en tō thanatō — NA/TR · 14

Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that eternal life {does} not reside in a murderer.

πᾶς ὁ μισῶν αὐτοῦ τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἐστίν ἀνθρωποκτόνος καὶ οἴδατε ὅτι αἰώνιον ζωὴν οὐκ ἔχει μένουσαν ἐν αὐτῷ πᾶς ἀνθρωποκτόνος pas ho misōn autou ton adelphon estin anthrōpoktonos kai oidate hoti aiōnion zōēn ouk echei menousan en autō pas anthrōpoktonos — NA/TR · 15

By this we know what love [is] -: [Jesus] laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down [our] lives for [our] brothers.

Ἐν τούτῳ ἐγνώκαμεν τὴν ἀγάπην ὅτι ἐκεῖνος ἔθηκεν αὐτοῦ τὴν ψυχὴν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν καὶ ἡμεῖς ὀφείλομεν θεῖναι τὰς ψυχὰς ὑπὲρ τῶν ἀδελφῶν En toutō egnōkamen tēn agapēn hoti ekeinos ethēken autou tēn psychēn hyper hēmōn kai hēmeis opheilomen theinai tas psychas hyper tōn adelphōn — NA/TR · 16

  • If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother [in] need, [but] withholds his compassion from him, how {can} the love of God abide in him?

δ’ ἂν ὃς ἔχῃ τοῦ κόσμου τὸν βίον καὶ θεωρῇ αὐτοῦ τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἔχοντα χρείαν καὶ κλείσῃ αὐτοῦ τὰ σπλάγχνα ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ πῶς ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ Θεοῦ μένει ἐν αὐτῷ d’ an hos echē tou kosmou ton bion kai theōrē autou ton adelphon echonta chreian kai kleisē autou ta splanchna ap’ autou pōs hē agapē tou Theou menei en autō — NA/TR · 17

Little children, let us love not in word [and] speech, but in action and truth.

Τεκνία ἀγαπῶμεν μὴ λόγῳ μηδὲ τῇ γλώσσῃ ἀλλὰ ἐν ἔργῳ καὶ ἀληθείᾳ Teknia agapōmen mē logō mēde tē glōssē alla en ergō kai alētheia — NA/TR · 18

And by this we will know that we belong to… the truth, and will assure our hearts in His presence…:

καὶ ἐν τούτῳ γνωσόμεθα ὅτι ἐσμέν ἐκ τῆς ἀληθείας καὶ πείσομεν ἡμῶν τὴν καρδίαν ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ kai en toutō gnōsometha hoti esmen ek tēs alētheias kai peisomen hēmōn tēn kardian emprosthen autou — NA/TR · 19

20

Even if our hearts condemn [us], - God is greater than our hearts, and He knows all things.

ὅτι ἐὰν ἡμῶν ἡ καρδία καταγινώσκῃ ὅτι ὁ Θεὸς ἐστὶν μείζων τῆς ἡμῶν καρδίας καὶ γινώσκει πάντα hoti ean hēmōn hē kardia kataginōskē hoti ho Theos estin meizōn tēs hēmōn kardias kai ginōskei panta — NA/TR · 20

Beloved, if our hearts vvv do not condemn [us], we have confidence before God,

Ἀγαπητοί ἐὰν ἡμῶν ἡ καρδία μὴ καταγινώσκῃ ἔχομεν παρρησίαν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν Agapētoi ean hēmōn hē kardia mē kataginōskē echomen parrēsian pros ton Theon — NA/TR · 21

and we will receive from Him whatever… we ask, because we keep His commandments and do what is pleasing in His sight…

καὶ λαμβάνομεν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ὃ ἐὰν αἰτῶμεν ὅτι τηροῦμεν αὐτοῦ τὰς ἐντολὰς καὶ ποιοῦμεν τὰ ἀρεστὰ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ kai lambanomen ap’ autou ho ean aitōmen hoti tēroumen autou tas entolas kai poioumen ta aresta enōpion autou — NA/TR · 22

And this is His commandment: that we should believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and we should love one another just as vvv He commanded us.

καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν αὐτοῦ ἡ ἐντολὴ ἵνα πιστεύσωμεν τῷ ὀνόματι αὐτοῦ τοῦ Υἱοῦ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ ἀγαπῶμεν ἀλλήλους καθὼς ἔδωκεν ἐντολὴν ἡμῖν kai hautē estin autou hē entolē hina pisteusōmen tō onomati autou tou Huiou Iēsou Christou kai agapōmen allēlous kathōs edōken entolēn hēmin — NA/TR · 23

  • Whoever keeps His commandments remains in [God], and [God] in him. And by this we know that He remains in us: by the Spirit He has given us.

καὶ ὁ τηρῶν αὐτοῦ τὰς ἐντολὰς μένει ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐν τούτῳ γινώσκομεν ὅτι μένει ἐν ἡμῖν ἐκ τοῦ Πνεύματος οὗ ἔδωκεν ἡμῖν kai ho tērōn autou tas entolas menei en autō kai autos en autō kai en toutō ginōskomen hoti menei en hēmin ek tou Pneumatos hou edōken hēmin — NA/TR · 24
