Chapter 2

Deliverance from False Prophets

1

Now there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. [They] will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them— bringing swift destruction on themselves.

δὲ Ἐγένοντο καὶ ψευδοπροφῆται ἐν τῷ λαῷ καὶ ὡς ἔσονται ψευδοδιδάσκαλοι ἐν ὑμῖν οἵτινες παρεισάξουσιν ἀπωλείας αἱρέσεις καὶ ἀρνούμενοι τὸν δεσπότην ἀγοράσαντα αὐτοὺς ἐπάγοντες ταχινὴν ἀπώλειαν ἑαυτοῖς de Egenonto kai pseudoprophētai en tō laō kai hōs esontai pseudodidaskaloi en hymin hoitines pareisaxousin apōleias haireseis kai arnoumenoi ton despotēn agorasanta autous epagontes tachinēn apōleian heautois — NA/TR · 1

  • Many will follow in their depravity, [and] because of [them] the way of truth will be defamed.

καὶ πολλοὶ ἐξακολουθήσουσιν αὐτῶν ταῖς ἀσελγείαις δι’ οὓς ἡ ὁδὸς τῆς ἀληθείας βλασφημηθήσεται kai polloi exakolouthēsousin autōn tais aselgeiais di’ hous hē hodos tēs alētheias blasphēmēthēsetai — NA/TR · 2

  • In their greed, [these false teachers] will exploit you with deceptive words. The longstanding verdict against them vvv remains in force, and their destruction {does} not sleep.

καὶ ἐν πλεονεξίᾳ ἐμπορεύσονται ὑμᾶς πλαστοῖς λόγοις τὸ ἔκπαλαι κρίμα οἷς οὐκ ἀργεῖ καὶ αὐτῶν ἡ ἀπώλεια οὐ νυστάζει kai en pleonexia emporeusontai hymas plastois logois to ekpalai krima hois ouk argei kai autōn hē apōleia ou nystazei — NA/TR · 3

For if God {did} not spare [the] angels when they sinned, but cast [them] deep into hell, placing [them] in chains of darkness to be held for judgment;

γὰρ Εἰ ὁ Θεὸς οὐκ ἐφείσατο ἀγγέλων ἁμαρτησάντων ἀλλὰ ταρταρώσας παρέδωκεν σειραῖς ζόφου τηρουμένους εἰς κρίσιν gar Ei ho Theos ouk epheisato angelōn hamartēsantōn alla tartarōsas paredōken seirais zophou tēroumenous eis krisin — NA/TR · 4

[if] vvv He did not spare [the] ancient world when He brought [the] flood [on its] ungodly [people], but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, among the eight;

καὶ οὐκ ἐφείσατο ἀρχαίου κόσμου ἐπάξας κατακλυσμὸν κόσμῳ ἀσεβῶν ἀλλὰ ἐφύλαξεν Νῶε κήρυκα δικαιοσύνης ὄγδοον kai ouk epheisato archaiou kosmou epaxas kataklysmon kosmō asebōn alla ephylaxen Nōe kēryka dikaiosynēs ogdoon — NA/TR · 5

[if] He condemned [the] cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction, reducing [them] to ashes [as] an example of what is coming on the ungodly;

καὶ κατέκρινεν πόλεις Σοδόμων καὶ Γομόρρας καταστροφῇ τεφρώσας τεθεικώς ὑπόδειγμα μελλόντων ἀσεβέσιν kai katekrinen poleis Sodomōn kai Gomorras katastrophē tephrōsas tetheikōs hypodeigma mellontōn asebesin — NA/TR · 6

and [if] He rescued Lot, a righteous [man] distressed by the vvv depraved conduct of the lawless

καὶ ἐρρύσατο Λὼτ δίκαιον καταπονούμενον ὑπὸ τῆς ἐν ἀσελγείᾳ ἀναστροφῆς τῶν ἀθέσμων kai errysato Lōt dikaion kataponoumenon hypo tēs en aselgeia anastrophēs tōn athesmōn — NA/TR · 7

(for that righteous [man], living among them day after day, was tormented [in his] righteous soul [by the] lawless deeds he saw and heard)—

γὰρ ὁ δίκαιος ἐνκατοικῶν ἐν αὐτοῖς ἡμέραν ἐξ ἡμέρας ἐβασάνιζεν δικαίαν ψυχὴν ἀνόμοις ἔργοις βλέμματι καὶ ἀκοῇ gar ho dikaios enkatoikōn en autois hēmeran ex hēmeras ebasanizen dikaian psychēn anomois ergois blemmati kai akoē — NA/TR · 8

[ if all this is so, then the ] Lord knows how to rescue [the] godly from trials and to hold [the] unrighteous for punishment on [the] day of judgment.

Κύριος οἶδεν ῥύεσθαι εὐσεβεῖς ἐκ πειρασμοῦ δὲ τηρεῖν ἀδίκους κολαζομένους εἰς ἡμέραν κρίσεως Kyrios oiden rhyesthai eusebeis ek peirasmou de tērein adikous kolazomenous eis hēmeran kriseōs — NA/TR · 9

[ Such punishment is ] specially [reserved] for those who indulge… [the] corrupt desires of [the] flesh and despise authority. Bold [and] self-willed, vvv they are unafraid to slander glorious beings.

δὲ μάλιστα τοὺς πορευομένους ἐν μιασμοῦ ἐπιθυμίᾳ ὀπίσω σαρκὸς καὶ καταφρονοῦντας κυριότητος τολμηταὶ αὐθάδεις οὐ τρέμουσιν βλασφημοῦντες δόξας de malista tous poreuomenous en miasmou epithymia opisō sarkos kai kataphronountas kyriotētos tolmētai authadeis ou tremousin blasphēmountes doxas — NA/TR · 10

Yet not even… angels, [though] greater in strength and power, dare to bring such slanderous charges against them before [the] Lord.

ὅπου οὐ ἄγγελοι ὄντες μείζονες ἰσχύϊ καὶ δυνάμει φέρουσιν βλάσφημον κρίσιν κατ’ αὐτῶν παρὰ Κυρίῳ hopou ou angeloi ontes meizones ischui kai dynamei pherousin blasphēmon krisin kat’ autōn para Kyriō — NA/TR · 11

  • These [men] [are] like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be captured and destroyed. They blaspheme in [matters] they do not understand, [and like such creatures]…, vvv they too will be destroyed.

δέ Οὗτοι ὡς ἄλογα ζῷα φυσικὰ γεγεννημένα εἰς ἅλωσιν καὶ φθοράν βλασφημοῦντες ἐν οἷς ἀγνοοῦσιν ἐν αὐτῶν τῇ φθορᾷ καὶ φθαρήσονται de Houtoi hōs aloga zōa physika gegennēmena eis halōsin kai phthoran blasphēmountes en hois agnoousin en autōn tē phthora kai phtharēsontai — NA/TR · 12

The harm they will suffer [is the] wages of [their] wickedness. They consider it a pleasure to carouse in broad daylight. [They are] blots and blemishes, reveling in their deception as they feast with you.

ἀδικούμενοι μισθὸν ἀδικίας ἡγούμενοι ἡδονὴν τὴν τρυφήν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ σπίλοι καὶ μῶμοι ἐντρυφῶντες ἐν αὐτῶν ταῖς ἀπάταις συνευωχούμενοι ὑμῖν adikoumenoi misthon adikias hēgoumenoi hēdonēn tēn tryphēn en hēmera spiloi kai mōmoi entryphōntes en autōn tais apatais syneuōchoumenoi hymin — NA/TR · 13

[Their] eyes are full of adultery; their desire for sin is never satisfied…; they seduce [the] unstable… [They are] accursed children with hearts trained in greed.

ὀφθαλμοὺς ἔχοντες μεστοὺς μοιχαλίδος καὶ ἀκαταπαύστους ἁμαρτίας δελεάζοντες ἀστηρίκτους ψυχὰς κατάρας τέκνα ἔχοντες καρδίαν γεγυμνασμένην πλεονεξίας ophthalmous echontes mestous moichalidos kai akatapaustous hamartias deleazontes astēriktous psychas kataras tekna echontes kardian gegymnasmenēn pleonexias — NA/TR · 14

They have left [the] straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam [son] of Beor, who loved [the] wages of wickedness.

Καταλιπόντες εὐθεῖαν ὁδὸν ἐπλανήθησαν ἐξακολουθήσαντες τῇ ὁδῷ τοῦ Βαλαὰμ τοῦ Βεώρ ὃς ἠγάπησεν μισθὸν ἀδικίας Katalipontes eutheian hodon eplanēthēsan exakolouthēsantes tē hodō tou Balaam tou Beōr hos ēgapēsen misthon adikias — NA/TR · 15

But he was rebuked for his transgression by a donkey, [ otherwise ] without speech, that spoke with a man’s voice [and] restrained the prophet’s madness.

δὲ ἔσχεν ἔλεγξιν ἰδίας παρανομίας ὑποζύγιον ἄφωνον φθεγξάμενον ἐν ἀνθρώπου φωνῇ ἐκώλυσεν τοῦ προφήτου τὴν παραφρονίαν de eschen elenxin idias paranomias hypozygion aphōnon phthenxamenon en anthrōpou phōnē ekōlysen tou prophētou tēn paraphronian — NA/TR · 16

These [men] are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them -.

Οὗτοί εἰσιν πηγαὶ ἄνυδροι καὶ ὁμίχλαι ἐλαυνόμεναι ὑπὸ λαίλαπος ζόφος τοῦ σκότους τετήρηται οἷς ὁ Houtoi eisin pēgai anydroi kai homichlai elaunomenai hypo lailapos zophos tou skotous tetērētai hois ho — NA/TR · 17

  • With lofty [but] empty words, they appeal [to the] sensual passions of [the] flesh [and] entice those [who are] just escaping from [others] who live in error.

γὰρ ὑπέρογκα ματαιότητος φθεγγόμενοι ἀσελγείαις ἐπιθυμίαις σαρκὸς δελεάζουσιν ἐν τοὺς ὀλίγως ἀποφεύγοντας τοὺς ἀναστρεφομένους ἐν πλάνῃ gar hyperonka mataiotētos phthengomenoi aselgeiais epithymiais sarkos deleazousin en tous oligōs apopheugontas tous anastrephomenous en planē — NA/TR · 18

They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves to depravity. For vvv vvv a man is a slave to whatever vvv has mastered him.

ἐπαγγελλόμενοι αὐτοῖς ἐλευθερίαν αὐτοὶ ὑπάρχοντες δοῦλοι τῆς φθορᾶς γάρ τούτῳ καὶ δεδούλωται ᾧ τις ἥττηται epangellomenoi autois eleutherian autoi hyparchontes douloi tēs phthoras gar toutō kai dedoulōtai hō tis hēttētai — NA/TR · 19

If indeed they have escaped the corruption of the world through [the] knowledge of [our] Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, only to be entangled [and] overcome by it again, their final [condition] is worse than [it was] at first.

Εἰ γὰρ ἀποφυγόντες τὰ μιάσματα τοῦ κόσμου ἐν ἐπιγνώσει τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ Σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δὲ ἐμπλακέντες ἡττῶνται τούτοις πάλιν αὐτοῖς ἔσχατα γέγονεν χείρονα τὰ τῶν πρώτων Ei gar apophygontes ta miasmata tou kosmou en epignōsei tou Kyriou kai Sōtēros Iēsou Christou de emplakentes hēttōntai toutois palin autois eschata gegonen cheirona ta tōn prōtōn — NA/TR · 20

  • It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than to have known [it] and then to turn away from the holy commandment passed on to them.

γὰρ ἦν κρεῖττον αὐτοῖς μὴ ἐπεγνωκέναι τὴν ὁδὸν τῆς δικαιοσύνης ἢ ἐπιγνοῦσιν ὑποστρέψαι ἐκ τῆς ἁγίας ἐντολῆς παραδοθείσης αὐτοῖς gar ēn kreitton autois mē epegnōkenai tēn hodon tēs dikaiosynēs ē epignousin hypostrepsai ek tēs hagias entolēs paradotheisēs autois — NA/TR · 21

Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to [its] vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed [goes back] to [her] wallowing in [the] mud.
