Chapter 3

Wives and Husbands

1

  • Wives, in the same way, submit yourselves to [your] husbands, so that even if [they] refuse to believe the word, they will be won over without words by the behavior of [their] wives

αἱ γυναῖκες Ὁμοίως ὑποτασσόμεναι τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν ἵνα καὶ εἴ τινες ἀπειθοῦσιν τῷ λόγῳ κερδηθήσονται ἄνευ λόγου διὰ τῆς ἀναστροφῆς τῶν γυναικῶν hai gynaikes Homoiōs hypotassomenai tois idiois andrasin hina kai ei tines apeithousin tō logō kerdēthēsontai aneu logou dia tēs anastrophēs tōn gynaikōn — NA/TR · 1

when they see your vvv pure [and] reverent demeanor.

ἐποπτεύσαντες τὴν ὑμῶν ἐν ἁγνὴν φόβῳ ἀναστροφὴν epopteusantes tēn hymōn en hagnēn phobō anastrophēn — NA/TR · 2

[Your beauty] {should} not come [from] outward adornment, [such as] braided hair or gold [jewelry] or fine clothes,

ὧν οὐχ ἔστω ὁ ἔξωθεν κόσμος ἐμπλοκῆς τριχῶν καὶ περιθέσεως χρυσίων ἢ ἐνδύσεως ἱματίων hōn ouch estō ho exōthen kosmos emplokēs trichōn kai peritheseōs chrysiōn ē endyseōs himatiōn — NA/TR · 3

but from the inner disposition of [your] heart, the unfading [ beauty ] of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight.

ἀλλ’ ὁ κρυπτὸς ἄνθρωπος τῆς καρδίας ἐν τῷ ἀφθάρτῳ τοῦ πραέως καὶ ἡσυχίου πνεύματος ὅ ἐστιν πολυτελές τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐνώπιον all’ ho kryptos anthrōpos tēs kardias en tō aphthartō tou praeōs kai hēsychiou pneumatos ho estin polyteles tou Theou enōpion — NA/TR · 4

For this is how the holy women of the past adorned themselves. They put their hope in God [and] were submissive to [their] husbands,

γάρ Οὕτως αἱ ἅγιαι γυναῖκες ποτε καὶ ἐκόσμουν ἑαυτάς αἱ ἐλπίζουσαι εἰς Θεὸν ὑποτασσόμεναι τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν gar Houtōs hai hagiai gynaikes pote kai ekosmoun heautas hai elpizousai eis Theon hypotassomenai tois idiois andrasin — NA/TR · 5

just as Sarah obeyed Abraham [and] called him lord. [And] you are [her] children if you do what is right and refuse to give way… to fear.

ὡς Σάρρα ὑπήκουσεν τῷ Ἀβραάμ καλοῦσα αὐτὸν κύριον ἐγενήθητε ἧς τέκνα ἀγαθοποιοῦσαι καὶ μὴ φοβούμεναι μηδεμίαν πτόησιν hōs Sarra hypēkousen tō Abraam kalousa auton kyrion egenēthēte hēs tekna agathopoiousai kai mē phoboumenai mēdemian ptoēsin — NA/TR · 6

  • Husbands, in the same way, treat… [your] wives {with} consideration as a delicate vessel, and {with} honor as fellow heirs of [the] gracious gift of life, so that your prayers vvv will not be hindered.

Οἱ ἄνδρες ὁμοίως συνοικοῦντες ἀπονέμοντες τῷ γυναικείῳ κατὰ γνῶσιν ὡς ἀσθενεστέρῳ σκεύει καὶ τιμήν ὡς συνκληρονόμοις χάριτος ζωῆς εἰς ὑμῶν τὰς προσευχὰς τὸ μὴ ἐνκόπτεσθαι Hoi andres homoiōs synoikountes aponemontes tō gynaikeiō kata gnōsin hōs asthenesterō skeuei kai timēn hōs synklēronomois charitos zōēs eis hymōn tas proseuchas to mē enkoptesthai — NA/TR · 7

Turning from Evil

vvv vvv Finally, all [of you], [be] like-minded [and] sympathetic, love as brothers, [be] tenderhearted [and] humble.

vvv Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but… with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.

μὴ ἀποδιδόντες κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ ἢ λοιδορίαν ἀντὶ λοιδορίας δὲ τοὐναντίον εὐλογοῦντες ὅτι εἰς τοῦτο ἐκλήθητε ἵνα κληρονομήσητε εὐλογίαν mē apodidontes kakon anti kakou ē loidorian anti loidorias de tounantion eulogountes hoti eis touto eklēthēte hina klēronomēsēte eulogian — NA/TR · 9

For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep [his] tongue from evil and [his] lips [from] deceitful speech.

γὰρ Ὁ θέλων ἀγαπᾶν ζωὴν καὶ ἰδεῖν ἀγαθὰς ἡμέρας παυσάτω τὴν γλῶσσαν ἀπὸ κακοῦ καὶ χείλη μὴ τοῦ δόλον λαλῆσαι gar Ho thelōn agapan zōēn kai idein agathas hēmeras pausatō tēn glōssan apo kakou kai cheilē mē tou dolon lalēsai — NA/TR · 10

  • He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.

δὲ ἐκκλινάτω ἀπὸ κακοῦ καὶ ποιησάτω ἀγαθόν ζητησάτω εἰρήνην καὶ διωξάτω αὐτήν de ekklinatō apo kakou kai poiēsatō agathon zētēsatō eirēnēn kai diōxatō autēn — NA/TR · 11

For [the] eyes of [the] Lord [are] on [the] righteous, and His ears are inclined to their prayer. But [the] face of [the] Lord [is] against those who do evil.”

ὅτι ὀφθαλμοὶ Κυρίου ἐπὶ δικαίους καὶ αὐτοῦ ὦτα εἰς αὐτῶν δέησιν δὲ πρόσωπον Κυρίου ἐπὶ ποιοῦντας κακά hoti ophthalmoi Kyriou epi dikaious kai autou ōta eis autōn deēsin de prosōpon Kyriou epi poiountas kaka — NA/TR · 12

  • Who can harm you if you are zealous for what [is] good?

Καὶ τίς ὁ κακώσων ὑμᾶς ἐὰν γένησθε ζηλωταὶ τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ Kai tis ho kakōsōn hymas ean genēsthe zēlōtai tou agathou — NA/TR · 13

Suffering for Righteousness

But even if you should suffer for what is right, [you are] blessed. “- vvv Do not fear what they fear; vvv do not be shaken.”

Ἀλλ’ καὶ εἰ πάσχοιτε διὰ δικαιοσύνην μακάριοι δὲ μὴ φοβηθῆτε αὐτῶν Τὸν φόβον μηδὲ ταραχθῆτε All’ kai ei paschoite dia dikaiosynēn makarioi de mē phobēthēte autōn Ton phobon mēde tarachthēte — NA/TR · 14

But in your hearts sanctify Christ [as] Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope [that is] in you. But [respond] with gentleness and respect,

δὲ ἐν ὑμῶν ταῖς καρδίαις ἁγιάσατε τὸν Χριστὸν Κύριον ἀεὶ ἕτοιμοι πρὸς ἀπολογίαν παντὶ τῷ αἰτοῦντι ὑμᾶς λόγον περὶ τῆς ἐλπίδος ἐν ὑμῖν ἀλλὰ μετὰ πραΰτητος καὶ φόβου de en hymōn tais kardiais hagiasate ton Christon Kyrion aei hetoimoi pros apologian panti tō aitounti hymas logon peri tēs elpidos en hymin alla meta prautētos kai phobou — NA/TR · 15

keeping a clear conscience, so that vvv vvv those who slander you… may be put to shame by your good behavior in Christ.

ἔχοντες ἀγαθήν συνείδησιν ἵνα ἐν ᾧ καταλαλεῖσθε οἱ ἐπηρεάζοντες καταισχυνθῶσιν ὑμῶν ἀγαθὴν τὴν ἀναστροφήν ἐν Χριστῷ echontes agathēn syneidēsin hina en hō katalaleisthe hoi epēreazontes kataischynthōsin hymōn agathēn tēn anastrophēn en Christō — NA/TR · 16

For [it is] better, if [it is] God’s will, to suffer [for] doing good than for doing evil.

γὰρ κρεῖττον εἰ θέλοι τοῦ Θεοῦ τὸ θέλημα πάσχειν ἀγαθοποιοῦντας ἢ κακοποιοῦντας gar kreitton ei theloi tou Theou to thelēma paschein agathopoiountas ē kakopoiountas — NA/TR · 17

For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, [the] righteous for [the] unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in [the] body but made alive in [the] Spirit,

ὅτι Χριστὸς καὶ ἔπαθεν περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἅπαξ δίκαιος ὑπὲρ ἀδίκων ἵνα προσαγάγῃ ὑμᾶς τῷ Θεῷ μὲν θανατωθεὶς σαρκὶ δὲ ζωοποιηθεὶς πνεύματι hoti Christos kai epathen peri hamartiōn hapax dikaios hyper adikōn hina prosagagē hymas tō Theō men thanatōtheis sarki de zōopoiētheis pneumati — NA/TR · 18

in whom vvv He also went [and] preached to the spirits in prison

ἐν ᾧ καὶ πορευθεὶς ἐκήρυξεν τοῖς πνεύμασιν ἐν φυλακῇ en hō kai poreutheis ekēryxen tois pneumasin en phylakē — NA/TR · 19

who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in [the] days of Noah [while the] ark was being built. In [the ark] a few [people], [only]… eight souls, were saved through water.

ἀπειθήσασίν ποτε ὅτε Θεοῦ ἀπεξεδέχετο ἡ μακροθυμία τοῦ ἐν ἡμέραις Νῶε κιβωτοῦ κατασκευαζομένης εἰς ἣν ὀλίγοι τοῦτ’ ἔστιν ὀκτὼ ψυχαί διεσώθησαν δι’ ὕδατος apeithēsasin pote hote Theou apexedecheto hē makrothymia tou en hēmerais Nōe kibōtou kataskeuazomenēs eis hēn oligoi tout’ estin oktō psychai diesōthēsan di’ hydatos — NA/TR · 20

And [this water] symbolizes [the] baptism [that] now saves you {also}— not the removal of dirt from the body, but [the] pledge of a clear conscience toward God— through [the] resurrection of Jesus Christ,

καὶ ὃ ἀντίτυπον βάπτισμα νῦν σῴζει ὑμᾶς οὐ ἀπόθεσις ῥύπου σαρκὸς ἀλλὰ ἐπερώτημα ἀγαθῆς συνειδήσεως εἰς Θεόν δι’ ἀναστάσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ kai ho antitypon baptisma nyn sōzei hymas ou apothesis rhypou sarkos alla eperōtēma agathēs syneidēseōs eis Theon di’ anastaseōs Iēsou Christou — NA/TR · 21

who has gone into heaven [and] is at [the] right hand of God, [with] angels, authorities, and powers subject to Him.

ὅς πορευθεὶς εἰς οὐρανόν ἐστιν ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀγγέλων καὶ ἐξουσιῶν καὶ δυνάμεων ὑποταγέντων αὐτῷ hos poreutheis eis ouranon estin en dexia tou Theou angelōn kai exousiōn kai dynameōn hypotagentōn autō — NA/TR · 22
