Chapter 4

A Warning against Pride

1

What [causes] conflicts and quarrels among you? Don’t [they] [come] from [the] passions at war within you…?

Πόθεν πόλεμοι καὶ πόθεν μάχαι ἐν ὑμῖν οὐκ ἐντεῦθεν ἐκ ὑμῶν τῶν ἡδονῶν τῶν στρατευομένων ἐν ὑμῶν τοῖς μέλεσιν Pothen polemoi kai pothen machai en hymin ouk enteuthen ek hymōn tōn hēdonōn tōn strateuomenōn en hymōn tois melesin — NA/TR · 1

You crave [what] {you do} not have; you kill and covet, but vvv are unable to obtain [it]. You quarrel and fight. vvv You do not have, because you {do} not ask.

ἐπιθυμεῖτε καὶ οὐκ ἔχετε φονεύετε καὶ ζηλοῦτε καὶ οὐ δύνασθε ἐπιτυχεῖν μάχεσθε καὶ πολεμεῖτε οὐκ ἔχετε διὰ ὑμᾶς μὴ τὸ αἰτεῖσθαι epithymeite kai ouk echete phoneuete kai zēloute kai ou dynasthe epitychein machesthe kai polemeite ouk echete dia hymas mē to aiteisthai — NA/TR · 2

[And when] you do ask…, {you do} not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may squander [it] on your pleasures.

αἰτεῖτε καὶ οὐ λαμβάνετε διότι αἰτεῖσθε κακῶς ἵνα δαπανήσητε ἐν ὑμῶν ταῖς ἡδοναῖς aiteite kai ou lambanete dioti aiteisthe kakōs hina dapanēsēte en hymōn tais hēdonais — NA/TR · 3

[You] adulteresses! vvv Do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility [toward] God? Therefore, whoever… chooses to be a friend of the world renders himself an enemy of God.

Μοιχαλίδες οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι ἡ φιλία τοῦ κόσμου ἐστιν ἔχθρα τοῦ Θεοῦ οὖν ὃς ἐὰν βουληθῇ εἶναι φίλος τοῦ κόσμου καθίσταται ἐχθρὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ Moichalides ouk oidate hoti hē philia tou kosmou estin echthra tou Theou oun hos ean boulēthē einai philos tou kosmou kathistatai echthros tou Theou — NA/TR · 4

Or do you think the Scripture says without reason [that] the Spirit He caused to dwell in us yearns with envy?

ἢ δοκεῖτε ὅτι ἡ γραφὴ λέγει κενῶς τὸ πνεῦμα ὃ κατῴκισεν ἐν ἡμῖν ἐπιποθεῖ Πρὸς φθόνον ē dokeite hoti hē graphē legei kenōs to pneuma ho katōkisen en hēmin epipothei Pros phthonon — NA/TR · 5

But He gives [us] more grace. This is why it says: “- God opposes [the] proud, but gives grace to [the] humble.”

δὲ δίδωσιν μείζονα χάριν διὸ λέγει Ὁ Θεὸς ἀντιτάσσεται ὑπερηφάνοις δὲ δίδωσιν χάριν ταπεινοῖς de didōsin meizona charin dio legei Ho Theos antitassetai hyperēphanois de didōsin charin tapeinois — NA/TR · 6

Drawing Near to God

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Ὑποτάγητε οὖν τῷ Θεῷ δὲ ἀντίστητε τῷ διαβόλῳ καὶ φεύξεται ἀφ’ ὑμῶν Hypotagēte oun tō Theō de antistēte tō diabolō kai pheuxetai aph’ hymōn — NA/TR · 7

Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse [your] hands, [you] sinners, and purify [your] hearts, [you] double-minded.

ἐγγίσατε τῷ Θεῷ καὶ ἐγγιεῖ ὑμῖν καθαρίσατε χεῖρας ἁμαρτωλοί καὶ ἁγνίσατε καρδίας δίψυχοι engisate tō Theō kai engiei hymin katharisate cheiras hamartōloi kai hagnisate kardias dipsychoi — NA/TR · 8

Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter to mourning, and [your] joy to gloom.

ταλαιπωρήσατε καὶ πενθήσατε καὶ κλαύσατε μετατραπήτω ὑμῶν ὁ γέλως εἰς πένθος καὶ ἡ χαρὰ εἰς κατήφειαν talaipōrēsate kai penthēsate kai klausate metatrapētō hymōn ho gelōs eis penthos kai hē chara eis katēpheian — NA/TR · 9

Humble yourselves before [the] Lord, and He will exalt you.

ταπεινώθητε ἐνώπιον Κυρίου καὶ ὑψώσει ὑμᾶς tapeinōthēte enōpion Kyriou kai hypsōsei hymas — NA/TR · 10

Brothers, {do] not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against [his] brother or judges vvv vvv [him] speaks against [the] law and judges [it]. And if you judge [the] law, you are not a practitioner of [the] law, but a judge [of it].

ἀδελφοί Μὴ καταλαλεῖτε ἀλλήλων ὁ καταλαλῶν ἀδελφοῦ ἢ κρίνων αὐτοῦ τὸν ἀδελφὸν καταλαλεῖ νόμου καὶ κρίνει νόμον δὲ εἰ κρίνεις νόμον εἶ οὐκ ποιητὴς νόμου ἀλλὰ κριτής adelphoi Mē katalaleite allēlōn ho katalalōn adelphou ē krinōn autou ton adelphon katalalei nomou kai krinei nomon de ei krineis nomon ei ouk poiētēs nomou alla kritēs — NA/TR · 11

There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the [One who] is able to save and destroy. But who are you to judge [your] neighbor?

ἐστιν ὁ εἷς νομοθέτης καὶ κριτής ὁ δυνάμενος σῶσαι καὶ ἀπολέσαι δὲ τίς εἶ σὺ ὁ κρίνων τὸν πλησίον estin ho heis nomothetēs kai kritēs ho dynamenos sōsai kai apolesai de tis ei sy ho krinōn ton plēsion — NA/TR · 12

Do Not Boast about Tomorrow

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit.

Ἄγε νῦν οἱ λέγοντες Σήμερον ἢ αὔριον πορευσόμεθα εἰς τήνδε τὴν πόλιν καὶ ποιήσομεν ἐνιαυτὸν ἐκεῖ καὶ ἐμπορευσόμεθα καὶ κερδήσομεν Age nyn hoi legontes Sēmeron ē aurion poreusometha eis tēnde tēn polin kai poiēsomen eniauton ekei kai emporeusometha kai kerdēsomen — NA/TR · 13

You do not even know… what [will happen] vvv tomorrow! What [is] your life? You are a mist vvv vvv that appears for a little [while] and then vanishes.

οἵτινες ἐπίστασθε οὐκ τὸ τῆς αὔριον ποία ὑμῶν ἡ ζωὴ γάρ ἐστε ἀτμὶς πρὸς ἡ φαινομένη ὀλίγον καὶ ἔπειτα ἀφανιζομένη hoitines epistasthe ouk to tēs aurion poia hymōn hē zōē gar este atmis pros hē phainomenē oligon kai epeita aphanizomenē — NA/TR · 14

Instead, you [ought] to say, “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.

vvv As it is, you boast in your proud intentions. All such boasting is evil.

δὲ νῦν καυχᾶσθε ἐν ὑμῶν ταῖς ἀλαζονείαις πᾶσα τοιαύτη καύχησις ἐστιν πονηρά de nyn kauchasthe en hymōn tais alazoneiais pasa toiautē kauchēsis estin ponēra — NA/TR · 16

Anyone, then, who knows [the] right thing to do, yet fails to do [it], is guilty of sin.

αὐτῷ οὖν εἰδότι καλὸν ποιεῖν καὶ μὴ ποιοῦντι ἐστιν ἁμαρτία autō oun eidoti kalon poiein kai mē poiounti estin hamartia — NA/TR · 17
