Chapter 6

Serving with Honor

1

All who are under [the] yoke of slavery should regard [their]… masters {as} fully worthy of honor, so that God’s name and [our] teaching vvv will not be discredited.

  • Those who have believing masters vvv should not show disrespect because they are brothers, but should serve [them] all the more, since those receiving [their] good service are beloved believers. Teach and encourage these [principles].

δὲ οἱ ἔχοντες πιστοὺς δεσπότας μὴ καταφρονείτωσαν ὅτι εἰσιν ἀδελφοί ἀλλὰ δουλευέτωσαν μᾶλλον ὅτι οἱ ἀντιλαμβανόμενοι τῆς εὐεργεσίας εἰσιν καὶ ἀγαπητοὶ πιστοί δίδασκε καὶ παρακάλει Ταῦτα de hoi echontes pistous despotas mē kataphroneitōsan hoti eisin adelphoi alla douleuetōsan mallon hoti hoi antilambanomenoi tēs euergesias eisin kai agapētoi pistoi didaske kai parakalei Tauta — NA/TR · 2

Reject False Doctrines

If anyone teaches another doctrine and vvv disagrees [with the] sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and with godly teaching,

Εἴ τις ἑτεροδιδασκαλεῖ καὶ μὴ προσέρχεται ὑγιαίνουσιν λόγοις τοῖς ἡμῶν τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ τῇ κατ’ εὐσέβειαν διδασκαλίᾳ Ei tis heterodidaskalei kai mē proserchetai hygiainousin logois tois hēmōn tou Kyriou Iēsou Christou kai tē kat’ eusebeian didaskalia — NA/TR · 3

he is conceited [and] understands nothing. Instead, [he has] an unhealthy interest in controversies and disputes about words, out of which come envy, strife, abusive talk, evil suspicions,

τετύφωται ἐπιστάμενος μηδὲν ἀλλὰ νοσῶν περὶ ζητήσεις καὶ λογομαχίας ἐξ ὧν γίνεται φθόνος ἔρις βλασφημίαι πονηραί ὑπόνοιαι tetyphōtai epistamenos mēden alla nosōn peri zētēseis kai logomachias ex hōn ginetai phthonos eris blasphēmiai ponērai hyponoiai — NA/TR · 4

[and] constant friction between men of depraved mind [who are] devoid of the truth. [These men] regard godliness as a means of gain.

Godliness with Contentment

Of course, godliness with contentment is great gain.

δὲ ἡ εὐσέβεια μετὰ αὐταρκείας Ἔστιν μέγας πορισμὸς de hē eusebeia meta autarkeias Estin megas porismos — NA/TR · 6

For we brought nothing into the world, so vvv we cannot carry anything {out of it}.

γὰρ εἰσηνέγκαμεν οὐδὲν εἰς τὸν κόσμον ὅτι οὐδὲ δυνάμεθα ἐξενεγκεῖν τι gar eisēnenkamen ouden eis ton kosmon hoti oude dynametha exenenkein ti — NA/TR · 7

But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.

δὲ ἔχοντες διατροφὰς καὶ σκεπάσματα ἀρκεσθησόμεθα τούτοις de echontes diatrophas kai skepasmata arkesthēsometha toutois — NA/TR · 8

Those who want to be rich, however, fall into temptation and become ensnared by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge [them] into ruin and destruction.

Οἱ βουλόμενοι πλουτεῖν δὲ ἐμπίπτουσιν εἰς πειρασμὸν καὶ παγίδα καὶ πολλὰς ἀνοήτους καὶ βλαβεράς ἐπιθυμίας αἵτινες βυθίζουσιν τοὺς ἀνθρώπους εἰς ὄλεθρον καὶ ἀπώλειαν Hoi boulomenoi ploutein de empiptousin eis peirasmon kai pagida kai pollas anoētous kai blaberas epithymias haitines bythizousin tous anthrōpous eis olethron kai apōleian — NA/TR · 9

For the love of money is [the] root of all kinds of evil. By craving [it], some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

γὰρ ἡ φιλαργυρία ἐστιν ῥίζα πάντων τῶν κακῶν ὀρεγόμενοι ἧς τινες ἀπεπλανήθησαν ἀπὸ τῆς πίστεως καὶ περιέπειραν ἑαυτοὺς πολλαῖς ὀδύναις gar hē philargyria estin rhiza pantōn tōn kakōn oregomenoi hēs tines apeplanēthēsan apo tēs pisteōs kai periepeiran heautous pollais odynais — NA/TR · 10

Fight the Good Fight

But you, O man of God, flee from these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, [and] gentleness.

Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called vvv [when you made] the good confession before many witnesses.

I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who {made} the good confession in His testimony before Pontius Pilate:

Keep… [this] commandment without stain [or] reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ,

which the blessed and only Sovereign [One]— the King of kings and Lord of lords— will bring about in His own time.

[He] alone is immortal [and] dwells in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen [Him], nor can [anyone] see [Him]. To [Him be] honor and eternal dominion! Amen.

A Charge to the Rich

Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be conceited [and] not to put their hope in [the] uncertainty of wealth, but in God, who richly provides all things for us to enjoy.

παράγγελλε Τοῖς πλουσίοις ἐν τῷ νῦν αἰῶνι μὴ ὑψηλοφρονεῖν μηδὲ ἠλπικέναι ἐπὶ ἀδηλότητι πλούτου ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ Θεῷ τῷ πλουσίως παρέχοντι πάντα ἡμῖν εἰς ἀπόλαυσιν parangelle Tois plousiois en tō nyn aiōni mē hypsēlophronein mēde ēlpikenai epi adēlotēti ploutou all’ epi Theō tō plousiōs parechonti panta hēmin eis apolausin — NA/TR · 17

[Instruct them] to do good, to be rich in good works, [and] to be generous [and] ready to share,

treasuring up for themselves a firm foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

Guard the Faith

O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted [to you]. Avoid irreverent, empty chatter and the opposing arguments of so-called “knowledge,

which some have professed and [thus] swerved away from the faith. Grace [be] with you all.
