Chapter 5

Reproof and Respect

1

{Do} not rebuke an older man, but appeal to [him] as to a father. [Treat] younger [men] as brothers,

μὴ ἐπιπλήξῃς Πρεσβυτέρῳ ἀλλὰ παρακάλει ὡς πατέρα νεωτέρους ὡς ἀδελφούς mē epiplēxēs Presbyterō alla parakalei hōs patera neōterous hōs adelphous — NA/TR · 1

older [women] as mothers, [and] younger [women] as sisters, with absolute purity.

πρεσβυτέρας ὡς μητέρας νεωτέρας ὡς ἀδελφὰς ἐν πάσῃ ἁγνείᾳ presbyteras hōs mēteras neōteras hōs adelphas en pasē hagneia — NA/TR · 2

Honoring True Widows

Honor [the] widows who [are] truly widows.

τίμα Χήρας τὰς ὄντως χήρας tima Chēras tas ontōs chēras — NA/TR · 3

But if a widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn… to show godliness to [their] own family and repay… [their] parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.

δέ εἰ τις χήρα ἔχει τέκνα ἢ ἔκγονα μανθανέτωσαν πρῶτον εὐσεβεῖν τὸν ἴδιον οἶκον καὶ ἀποδιδόναι ἀμοιβὰς τοῖς προγόνοις γάρ τοῦτο ἐστιν ἀπόδεκτον ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ de ei tis chēra echei tekna ē ekgona manthanetōsan prōton eusebein ton idion oikon kai apodidonai amoibas tois progonois gar touto estin apodekton enōpion tou Theou — NA/TR · 4

  • [The widow] who [is] truly [in need] and left all alone puts [her] hope in God and continues night and day in [her] petitions and prayers.

δὲ Ἡ ὄντως χήρα καὶ μεμονωμένη ἤλπικεν ἐπὶ Θεὸν καὶ προσμένει νυκτὸς καὶ ἡμέρας ταῖς δεήσεσιν καὶ ταῖς προσευχαῖς de Hē ontōs chēra kai memonōmenē ēlpiken epi Theon kai prosmenei nyktos kai hēmeras tais deēsesin kai tais proseuchais — NA/TR · 5

But she who lives for pleasure is dead [even while she] is still alive.

δὲ ἡ σπαταλῶσα τέθνηκεν ζῶσα de hē spatalōsa tethnēken zōsa — NA/TR · 6

  • Give these instructions [to the believers]…, so that they will be above reproach.

Καὶ παράγγελλε ταῦτα ἵνα ὦσιν ἀνεπίλημπτοι Kai parangelle tauta hina ōsin anepilēmptoi — NA/TR · 7

  • If anyone vvv does not provide for [his] own, and especially [his own] household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

δέ εἰ τις οὐ προνοεῖ τῶν ἰδίων καὶ μάλιστα οἰκείων ἤρνηται τὴν πίστιν καὶ ἔστιν χείρων ἀπίστου de ei tis ou pronoei tōn idiōn kai malista oikeiōn ērnētai tēn pistin kai estin cheirōn apistou — NA/TR · 8

A widow should be enrolled if she is vvv [at least] sixty years [old], faithful… to her husband,

[and] well known for good deeds [such as] bringing up children, entertaining strangers, washing [the] feet of the saints, imparting relief to the afflicted, [and] devoting herself to every good work.

μαρτυρουμένη ἐν καλοῖς ἔργοις εἰ ἐτεκνοτρόφησεν εἰ ἐξενοδόχησεν εἰ ἔνιψεν πόδας ἁγίων εἰ ἐπήρκεσεν θλιβομένοις εἰ ἐπηκολούθησεν παντὶ ἀγαθῷ ἔργῳ martyroumenē en kalois ergois ei eteknotrophēsen ei exenodochēsen ei enipsen podas hagiōn ei epērkesen thlibomenois ei epēkolouthēsen panti agathō ergō — NA/TR · 10

But refuse [to enroll] younger widows. For when their passions draw them away from Christ, they will want to marry,

δὲ παραιτοῦ Νεωτέρας χήρας γὰρ ὅταν καταστρηνιάσωσιν τοῦ Χριστοῦ θέλουσιν γαμεῖν de paraitou Neōteras chēras gar hotan katastrēniasōsin tou Christou thelousin gamein — NA/TR · 11

[and thus] will incur judgment because they are setting aside [their] first faith.

ἔχουσαι κρίμα ὅτι ἠθέτησαν τὴν πρώτην πίστιν echousai krima hoti ēthetēsan tēn prōtēn pistin — NA/TR · 12

  • At the same time vvv they will also learn [to be] idle, going from house to house and {being} not only idle, but also gossips and busybodies, discussing things they should not [ mention ].

δὲ ἅμα καὶ μανθάνουσιν ἀργαὶ περιερχόμεναι τὰς οἰκίας δὲ οὐ μόνον ἀργαὶ ἀλλὰ καὶ φλύαροι καὶ περίεργοι λαλοῦσαι τὰ δέοντα μὴ de hama kai manthanousin argai perierchomenai tas oikias de ou monon argai alla kai phlyaroi kai periergoi lalousai ta deonta mē — NA/TR · 13

So I advise [the] younger [widows] to marry, have children, [and] manage their households, denying… the adversary occasion for slander.

οὖν Βούλομαι νεωτέρας γαμεῖν τεκνογονεῖν οἰκοδεσποτεῖν διδόναι μηδεμίαν τῷ ἀντικειμένῳ ἀφορμὴν χάριν λοιδορίας oun Boulomai neōteras gamein teknogonein oikodespotein didonai mēdemian tō antikeimenō aphormēn charin loidorias — NA/TR · 14

For some vvv have already turned aside to follow Satan.

γάρ τινες ἤδη ἐξετράπησαν ὀπίσω τοῦ Σατανᾶ gar tines ēdē exetrapēsan opisō tou Satana — NA/TR · 15

If any believing [woman] has [dependent] widows, she must assist them and not {allow} the church to be burdened, so that it can help the widows [who are] truly [ in need ].

Εἴ τις πιστὴ ἔχει χήρας ἐπαρκείτω αὐταῖς καὶ μὴ ἡ ἐκκλησία βαρείσθω ἵνα ἐπαρκέσῃ ταῖς χήραις ὄντως Ei tis pistē echei chēras eparkeitō autais kai mē hē ekklēsia bareisthō hina eparkesē tais chērais ontōs — NA/TR · 16

Honoring Elders

  • Elders who lead effectively are worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching.

Οἱ πρεσβύτεροι προεστῶτες καλῶς ἀξιούσθωσαν διπλῆς τιμῆς μάλιστα οἱ κοπιῶντες ἐν λόγῳ καὶ διδασκαλίᾳ Hoi presbyteroi proestōtes kalōs axiousthōsan diplēs timēs malista hoi kopiōntes en logō kai didaskalia — NA/TR · 17

For the Scripture says, “vvv Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker [is] worthy of his wages.”

γὰρ ἡ γραφή λέγει οὐ φιμώσεις Βοῦν ἀλοῶντα καί ὁ ἐργάτης Ἄξιος τοῦ αὐτοῦ μισθοῦ gar hē graphē legei ou phimōseis Boun aloōnta kai ho ergatēs Axios tou autou misthou — NA/TR · 18

{Do} not entertain an accusation against an elder, except… on [the testimony of] two or three witnesses.

μὴ παραδέχου κατηγορίαν Κατὰ πρεσβυτέρου ἐκτὸς εἰ μὴ ἐπὶ δύο ἢ τριῶν μαρτύρων mē paradechou katēgorian Kata presbyterou ektos ei mē epi dyo ē triōn martyrōn — NA/TR · 19

But those who persist in sin should be rebuked in front of everyone, so that the others will stand in fear [of sin].

δὲ Τοὺς ἁμαρτάνοντας ἔλεγχε ἐνώπιον πάντων ἵνα καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ ἔχωσιν φόβον de Tous hamartanontas elenche enōpion pantōn hina kai hoi loipoi echōsin phobon — NA/TR · 20

A Charge to Timothy

21

I solemnly charge [you] before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels to maintain these [principles] without bias, [and] to do nothing out of partiality.

Διαμαρτύρομαι ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ τῶν ἐκλεκτῶν ἀγγέλων ἵνα φυλάξῃς ταῦτα χωρὶς προκρίματος ποιῶν μηδὲν κατὰ πρόσκλισιν Diamartyromai enōpion tou Theou kai Christou Iēsou kai tōn eklektōn angelōn hina phylaxēs tauta chōris prokrimatos poiōn mēden kata prosklisin — NA/TR · 21

Do not be too quick… in the laying on of hands [and thereby] share in [the] sins of others. Keep yourself pure.

ταχέως μηδενὶ ἐπιτίθει Χεῖρας μηδὲ κοινώνει ἁμαρτίαις ἀλλοτρίαις τήρει σεαυτὸν ἁγνὸν tacheōs mēdeni epitithei Cheiras mēde koinōnei hamartiais allotriais tērei seauton hagnon — NA/TR · 22

vvv Stop drinking [only] water [and] use a little wine instead, because of [your] stomach and your frequent ailments.

Μηκέτι ὑδροπότει χρῶ ὀλίγῳ οἴνῳ ἀλλὰ διὰ τὸν στόμαχον καὶ σου πυκνάς τὰς ἀσθενείας Mēketi hydropotei chrō oligō oinō alla dia ton stomachon kai sou pyknas tas astheneias — NA/TR · 23

The sins of some men are obvious, going ahead of [them] to judgment; but [the sins] of others vvv do [not] surface until later.

αἱ ἁμαρτίαι Τινῶν ἀνθρώπων εἰσιν πρόδηλοί προάγουσαι εἰς κρίσιν δὲ τισὶν καὶ ἐπακολουθοῦσιν hai hamartiai Tinōn anthrōpōn eisin prodēloi proagousai eis krisin de tisin kai epakolouthousin — NA/TR · 24

In the same way…, good deeds [are] obvious, and even the [ones that] are [inconspicuous] vvv cannot remain hidden.

ὡσαύτως καὶ τὰ καλὰ τὰ ἔργα πρόδηλα καὶ τὰ ἔχοντα ἄλλως οὐ δύνανται κρυβῆναι hōsautōs kai ta kala ta erga prodēla kai ta echonta allōs ou dynantai krybēnai — NA/TR · 25
