Chapter 3
Timothy’s Visit
1
So [when] we could bear [it] no longer, we were willing to be left on our own in Athens.

- We sent Timothy, our brother and fellow worker for God in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith,
καὶ ἐπέμψαμεν Τιμόθεον ἡμῶν τὸν ἀδελφὸν καὶ συνεργὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ τοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς τὸ στηρίξαι καὶ παρακαλέσαι ὑμᾶς ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν τῆς πίστεως kai epempsamen Timotheon hēmōn ton adelphon kai synergon tou Theou en tō euangeliō tou Christou eis to stērixai kai parakalesai hymas hyper hymōn tēs pisteōs — NA/TR · 2

so that none [of you] would be shaken by these trials. For you know that we are destined for this.

- Indeed, when we were with you, we kept warning you… that we would suffer persecution; and as… you know, it has come to pass.
καὶ γὰρ ὅτε ἦμεν πρὸς ὑμᾶς προελέγομεν ὑμῖν ὅτι μέλλομεν θλίβεσθαι καθὼς καὶ καὶ οἴδατε ἐγένετο kai gar hote ēmen pros hymas proelegomen hymin hoti mellomen thlibesthai kathōs kai kai oidate egeneto — NA/TR · 4

For this reason…, [when] I could bear [it] no longer, I sent to find out about your faith, [for fear that] the tempter {had} somehow tempted you and that our labor might have been in vain.
διὰ τοῦτο στέγων μηκέτι κἀγὼ ἔπεμψα εἰς τὸ γνῶναι ὑμῶν τὴν πίστιν μή ὁ πειράζων πως ἐπείρασεν ὑμᾶς καὶ ἡμῶν ὁ κόπος γένηται εἰς κενὸν dia touto stegōn mēketi kagō epempsa eis to gnōnai hymōn tēn pistin mē ho peirazōn pōs epeirasen hymas kai hēmōn ho kopos genētai eis kenon — NA/TR · 5
Timothy’s Encouraging Report

But just now, Timothy has returned… from [ his visit] with the good news… about your faith, [your] love, and [the] fond memories vvv you have preserved -, longing to see us just as we [long to see] you.
δὲ Ἄρτι Τιμοθέου ἐλθόντος πρὸς ἡμᾶς ἀφ’ ὑμῶν καὶ εὐαγγελισαμένου ἡμῖν ὑμῶν τὴν πίστιν καὶ τὴν ἀγάπην καὶ ἀγαθὴν μνείαν ὅτι πάντοτε ἔχετε ἡμῶν ἐπιποθοῦντες ἰδεῖν ἡμᾶς καθάπερ ἡμεῖς καὶ ὑμᾶς de Arti Timotheou elthontos pros hēmas aph’ hymōn kai euangelisamenou hēmin hymōn tēn pistin kai tēn agapēn kai agathēn mneian hoti pantote echete hēmōn epipothountes idein hēmas kathaper hēmeis kai hymas — NA/TR · 6

For this reason…, brothers, in all our distress and persecution, we have been reassured about you, because of your faith.
διὰ τοῦτο ἀδελφοί ἐπὶ πάσῃ ἡμῶν τῇ ἀνάγκῃ καὶ θλίψει παρεκλήθημεν ἐφ’ ὑμῖν διὰ ὑμῶν τῆς πίστεως dia touto adelphoi epi pasē hēmōn tē anankē kai thlipsei pareklēthēmen eph’ hymin dia hymōn tēs pisteōs — NA/TR · 7

For now we can go on living, as long as you are standing firm in [the] Lord.

- How can we vvv [adequately] thank God for you in return for vvv vvv vvv vvv our great joy over you in [His] presence…?
γὰρ Τίνα δυνάμεθα ἀνταποδοῦναι εὐχαριστίαν τῷ Θεῷ περὶ ὑμῶν ἐπὶ πάσῃ τῇ χαρᾷ ᾗ χαίρομεν δι’ ὑμᾶς ἔμπροσθεν ἡμῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ gar Tina dynametha antapodounai eucharistian tō Theō peri hymōn epi pasē tē chara hē chairomen di’ hymas emprosthen hēmōn tou Theou — NA/TR · 9

Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith.

Now {may} our God and Father Himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you.

And {may} the Lord vvv cause you to increase and overflow with love for one another and for everyone [else], just as our [love] for you [overflows],
δὲ ὁ Κύριος ὑμᾶς πλεονάσαι καὶ περισσεύσαι τῇ ἀγάπῃ εἰς ἀλλήλους καὶ εἰς πάντας καθάπερ ἡμεῖς καὶ εἰς ὑμᾶς de ho Kyrios hymas pleonasai kai perisseusai tē agapē eis allēlous kai eis pantas kathaper hēmeis kai eis hymas — NA/TR · 12

so that He may establish your hearts in blamelessness [and] holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints. Amen.
