Chapter 3
Faith and Belief

O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before [your very] eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed [as] crucified.

I would like to learn just [one thing] from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?
θέλω μαθεῖν μόνον τοῦτο ἀφ’ ὑμῶν ἐλάβετε τὸ Πνεῦμα ἐξ ἔργων νόμου ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως thelō mathein monon touto aph’ hymōn elabete to Pneuma ex ergōn nomou ē ex akoēs pisteōs — NA/TR · 2

Are you so foolish? After starting in [the] Spirit, vvv are you now finishing in [the] flesh?

Have you suffered so much for nothing, if it really was… for nothing?
ἐπάθετε τοσαῦτα εἰκῇ εἴ γε καὶ εἰκῇ epathete tosauta eikē ei ge kai eikē — NA/TR · 4

- {Does} [God] lavish [His] Spirit on you and work miracles among you because [you] practice the law, or because [you] hear [and] believe?
οὖν ὁ ἐπιχορηγῶν τὸ Πνεῦμα ὑμῖν καὶ ἐνεργῶν δυνάμεις ἐν ὑμῖν ἐξ ἔργων νόμου ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως oun ho epichorēgōn to Pneuma hymin kai energōn dynameis en hymin ex ergōn nomou ē ex akoēs pisteōs — NA/TR · 5

So also, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”

Understand, then, that those who have faith are sons of Abraham.
Γινώσκετε ἄρα ὅτι οἱ ἐκ πίστεως οὗτοι εἰσιν υἱοί Ἀβραάμ Ginōskete ara hoti hoi ek pisteōs houtoi eisin huioi Abraam — NA/TR · 7

- The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, [and] foretold the gospel to Abraham -: “All nations will be blessed through you.”
δὲ ἡ γραφὴ προϊδοῦσα ὅτι ὁ Θεὸς δικαιοῖ τὰ ἔθνη ἐκ πίστεως προευηγγελίσατο τῷ Ἀβραὰμ ὅτι πάντα τὰ ἔθνη Ἐνευλογηθήσονται ἐν σοὶ de hē graphē proidousa hoti ho Theos dikaioi ta ethnē ek pisteōs proeuēngelisato tō Abraam hoti panta ta ethnē Eneulogēthēsontai en soi — NA/TR · 8

So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the [man] of faith.

Christ Has Redeemed Us

- All who rely on… works of the law are under a curse. For it is written -: “Cursed is everyone who vvv does not continue to do vvv everything written in the Book of the Law.”
γὰρ Ὅσοι εἰσὶν ἐξ ἔργων νόμου εἰσίν ὑπὸ κατάραν γὰρ γέγραπται ὅτι Ἐπικατάρατος πᾶς ὃς οὐκ ἐμμένει τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτά πᾶσιν τοῖς γεγραμμένοις ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τοῦ νόμου gar Hosoi eisin ex ergōn nomou eisin hypo kataran gar gegraptai hoti Epikataratos pas hos ouk emmenei tou poiēsai auta pasin tois gegrammenois en tō bibliō tou nomou — NA/TR · 10

Now it is clear that no one is justified before God by [the] law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.”
δὲ δῆλον ὅτι οὐδεὶς δικαιοῦται παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ ἐν νόμῳ ὅτι Ὁ δίκαιος ζήσεται ἐκ πίστεως de dēlon hoti oudeis dikaioutai para tō Theō en nomō hoti Ho dikaios zēsetai ek pisteōs — NA/TR · 11

The law, however, is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The [man who] does these things will live by them.”

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. For it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”

[He redeemed us] in order that the blessing promised to Abraham would come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
ἵνα ἡ εὐλογία τοῦ Ἀβραὰμ γένηται εἰς τὰ ἔθνη ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ἵνα διὰ τῆς πίστεως λάβωμεν τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν τοῦ Πνεύματος hina hē eulogia tou Abraam genētai eis ta ethnē en Christō Iēsou hina dia tēs pisteōs labōmen tēn epangelian tou Pneumatos — NA/TR · 14
The Purpose of the Law

Brothers, let me put this in human terms… Even a human covenant…, once it is ratified, cannot be canceled or amended.
Ἀδελφοί λέγω κατὰ ἄνθρωπον ὅμως διαθήκην ἀνθρώπου κεκυρωμένην οὐδεὶς ἀθετεῖ ἢ ἐπιδιατάσσεται Adelphoi legō kata anthrōpon homōs diathēkēn anthrōpou kekyrōmenēn oudeis athetei ē epidiatassetai — NA/TR · 15

- The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. vvv [The Scripture ] does not say, “and to seeds, vvv meaning many, but “and to your seed,” vvv meaning One, who is Christ.
δὲ αἱ ἐπαγγελίαι ἐρρέθησαν τῷ Ἀβραὰμ καὶ τῷ αὐτοῦ σπέρματι οὐ λέγει Καὶ τοῖς σπέρμασιν ὡς ἐπὶ πολλῶν ἀλλ’ Καὶ τῷ σου σπέρματί ὡς ἐφ’ ἑνός ὅς ἐστιν Χριστός de hai epangeliai errethēsan tō Abraam kai tō autou spermati ou legei Kai tois spermasin hōs epi pollōn all’ Kai tō sou spermati hōs eph’ henos hos estin Christos — NA/TR · 16

- What I mean [is] this: [The] law that came 430 {}… years later vvv does not revoke [the] covenant previously established by God, so as to nullify the promise.
δὲ λέγω Τοῦτο ὁ νόμος γεγονὼς τετρακόσια καὶ τριάκοντα ἔτη μετὰ οὐκ ἀκυροῖ διαθήκην προκεκυρωμένην ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς τὸ καταργῆσαι τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν de legō Touto ho nomos gegonōs tetrakosia kai triakonta etē meta ouk akyroi diathēkēn prokekyrōmenēn hypo tou Theou eis to katargēsai tēn epangelian — NA/TR · 17

For if the inheritance depends on [the] law, [then it] no longer depends on a promise; but God freely granted [it] to Abraham through a promise.
γὰρ εἰ ἡ κληρονομία ἐκ νόμου οὐκέτι ἐξ ἐπαγγελίας δὲ ὁ Θεός κεχάρισται τῷ Ἀβραὰμ δι’ ἐπαγγελίας gar ei hē klēronomia ek nomou ouketi ex epangelias de ho Theos kecharistai tō Abraam di’ epangelias — NA/TR · 18

Why then [ was ] the law [ given ]? It was added because of transgressions, until [the] arrival of the seed vvv to whom [the] promise referred. It was administered through angels by vvv a mediator.

- A mediator is unnecessary, however, [ for only ] one [ party ]; but God is one.
ὁ μεσίτης ἔστιν οὐκ δὲ ἑνὸς δὲ ὁ Θεὸς ἐστιν εἷς ho mesitēs estin ouk de henos de ho Theos estin heis — NA/TR · 20

[Is] the law, then, opposed to the promises of God? vvv Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness {would} certainly have come from [the] law.

But the Scripture [ pronounces ] all things confined by sin, so that by faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.
ἀλλὰ ἡ γραφὴ πάντα τὰ συνέκλεισεν ὑπὸ ἁμαρτίαν ἵνα ἐκ πίστεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἡ ἐπαγγελία δοθῇ τοῖς πιστεύουσιν alla hē graphē panta ta synekleisen hypo hamartian hina ek pisteōs Iēsou Christou hē epangelia dothē tois pisteuousin — NA/TR · 22

- Before [this] faith came, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until faith should be revealed.
δὲ Πρὸ τοῦ τὴν πίστιν ἐλθεῖν ἐφρουρούμεθα ὑπὸ νόμον συνκλειόμενοι εἰς τὴν πίστιν μέλλουσαν ἀποκαλυφθῆναι de Pro tou tēn pistin elthein ephrouroumetha hypo nomon synkleiomenoi eis tēn pistin mellousan apokalyphthēnai — NA/TR · 23

So the law became our guardian to lead us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
ὥστε ὁ νόμος γέγονεν ἡμῶν παιδαγωγὸς εἰς Χριστόν ἵνα δικαιωθῶμεν ἐκ πίστεως hōste ho nomos gegonen hēmōn paidagōgos eis Christon hina dikaiōthōmen ek pisteōs — NA/TR · 24

Now [that] faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.
δὲ τῆς πίστεως ἐλθούσης ἐσμεν οὐκέτι ὑπὸ παιδαγωγόν de tēs pisteōs elthousēs esmen ouketi hypo paidagōgon — NA/TR · 25
Sons through Faith in Christ

γὰρ ἐστε Πάντες υἱοὶ Θεοῦ διὰ τῆς πίστεως ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ gar este Pantes huioi Theou dia tēs pisteōs en Christō Iēsou — NA/TR · 26

For all of you [who] were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
γὰρ ὅσοι ἐβαπτίσθητε εἰς Χριστὸν ἐνεδύσασθε Χριστὸν gar hosoi ebaptisthēte eis Christon enedysasthe Christon — NA/TR · 27

There is neither Jew nor Greek, - slave nor free, - male [nor] female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
ἔνι οὐκ Ἰουδαῖος οὐδὲ Ἕλλην ἔνι οὐκ δοῦλος οὐδὲ ἐλεύθερος ἔνι οὐκ ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ γὰρ ὑμεῖς ἐστε πάντες εἷς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ eni ouk Ioudaios oude Hellēn eni ouk doulos oude eleutheros eni ouk arsen kai thēly gar hymeis este pantes heis en Christō Iēsou — NA/TR · 28

And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed [and] heirs according to [the] promise.
