Chapter 4
The Light of the Gospel

Therefore…, [since God] in His mercy has given us this ministry, vvv we do not lose heart.
Διὰ τοῦτο καθὼς ἠλεήθημεν ἔχοντες ταύτην τὴν διακονίαν οὐκ ἐγκακοῦμεν Dia touto kathōs ēleēthēmen echontes tautēn tēn diakonian ouk enkakoumen — NA/TR · 1

Instead, we have renounced secret [and] shameful [ways]. vvv We do not practice… deceit, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by open proclamation of the truth, we commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
ἀλλὰ ἀπειπάμεθα τὰ κρυπτὰ τῆς αἰσχύνης μὴ περιπατοῦντες ἐν πανουργίᾳ μηδὲ δολοῦντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀλλὰ τῇ φανερώσει τῆς ἀληθείας συνιστάνοντες ἑαυτοὺς πρὸς πᾶσαν ἀνθρώπων συνείδησιν ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ alla apeipametha ta krypta tēs aischynēs mē peripatountes en panourgia mēde dolountes ton logon tou Theou alla tē phanerōsei tēs alētheias synistanontes heautous pros pasan anthrōpōn syneidēsin enōpion tou Theou — NA/TR · 2

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing.
δὲ καὶ Εἰ ἡμῶν τὸ εὐαγγέλιον ἔστιν κεκαλυμμένον ἐστὶν κεκαλυμμένον ἐν τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις de kai Ei hēmōn to euangelion estin kekalymmenon estin kekalymmenon en tois apollymenois — NA/TR · 3

The god of this age has blinded the minds of - unbelievers, so vvv vvv they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is [the] image of God.
ὁ θεὸς τούτου τοῦ αἰῶνος ἐτύφλωσεν τὰ νοήματα τῶν ἐν οἷς ἀπίστων εἰς μὴ τὸ αὐγάσαι τὸν φωτισμὸν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου τῆς δόξης τοῦ Χριστοῦ ὅς ἐστιν εἰκὼν τοῦ Θεοῦ ho theos toutou tou aiōnos etyphlōsen ta noēmata tōn en hois apistōn eis mē to augasai ton phōtismon tou euangeliou tēs doxēs tou Christou hos estin eikōn tou Theou — NA/TR · 4

For vvv we do not proclaim ourselves, but Jesus Christ [as] Lord, and ourselves [as] your servants for Jesus’ sake.
γὰρ Οὐ κηρύσσομεν ἑαυτοὺς ἀλλὰ Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν Κύριον δὲ ἑαυτοὺς ὑμῶν δούλους Ἰησοῦν διὰ gar Ou kēryssomen heautous alla Iēsoun Christon Kyrion de heautous hymōn doulous Iēsoun dia — NA/TR · 5

For God, who said, “{Let} light shine out of darkness,” made His light shine in our hearts to give us [the] light of the knowledge of the glory of God in [the] face of Jesus Christ.
ὅτι ὁ Θεὸς ὁ εἰπών φῶς λάμψει Ἐκ σκότους ὃς ἔλαμψεν ἐν ἡμῶν ταῖς καρδίαις πρὸς φωτισμὸν τῆς γνώσεως τῆς δόξης τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν προσώπῳ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ hoti ho Theos ho eipōn phōs lampsei Ek skotous hos elampsen en hēmōn tais kardiais pros phōtismon tēs gnōseōs tēs doxēs tou Theou en prosōpō Iēsou Christou — NA/TR · 6
Treasure in Jars of Clay

Now we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that [this] surpassingly great power is from God and not from us.
δὲ Ἔχομεν τοῦτον τὸν θησαυρὸν ἐν σκεύεσιν ὀστρακίνοις ἵνα ἡ ὑπερβολὴ τῆς δυνάμεως ᾖ τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ μὴ ἐξ ἡμῶν de Echomen touton ton thēsauron en skeuesin ostrakinois hina hē hyperbolē tēs dynameōs ē tou Theou kai mē ex hēmōn — NA/TR · 7

We are hard pressed on all [sides], but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;
θλιβόμενοι ἐν παντὶ ἀλλ’ οὐ στενοχωρούμενοι ἀπορούμενοι ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἐξαπορούμενοι thlibomenoi en panti all’ ou stenochōroumenoi aporoumenoi all’ ouk exaporoumenoi — NA/TR · 8

persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.
διωκόμενοι ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἐγκαταλειπόμενοι καταβαλλόμενοι ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἀπολλύμενοι diōkomenoi all’ ouk enkataleipomenoi kataballomenoi all’ ouk apollymenoi — NA/TR · 9

{We} always carry around in [our] body the death [of] Jesus, so that the life of Jesus {may} also be revealed in our body.
πάντοτε περιφέροντες ἐν τῷ σώματι τὴν νέκρωσιν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἵνα ἡ ζωὴ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ φανερωθῇ ἐν ἡμῶν τῷ σώματι pantote peripherontes en tō sōmati tēn nekrōsin tou Iēsou hina hē zōē tou Iēsou kai phanerōthē en hēmōn tō sōmati — NA/TR · 10

For we who are alive {are} always consigned to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus {may} also be revealed in our mortal body.
γὰρ ἡμεῖς οἱ ζῶντες ἀεὶ παραδιδόμεθα εἰς θάνατον Ἰησοῦν διὰ ἵνα ἡ ζωὴ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ φανερωθῇ ἐν ἡμῶν θνητῇ τῇ σαρκὶ gar hēmeis hoi zōntes aei paradidometha eis thanaton Iēsoun dia hina hē zōē tou Iēsou kai phanerōthē en hēmōn thnētē tē sarki — NA/TR · 11

So then -, death is at work in us, but life [is at work] in you.
ὥστε ὁ θάνατος ἐνεργεῖται ἐν ἡμῖν δὲ ἡ ζωὴ ἐν ὑμῖν hōste ho thanatos energeitai en hēmin de hē zōē en hymin — NA/TR · 12

And in keeping with what is written, “I believed, therefore I have spoken,” we who have the same spirit of faith also believe and therefore speak,
δὲ κατὰ τὸ γεγραμμένον Ἐπίστευσα διὸ ἐλάλησα ἡμεῖς Ἔχοντες τὸ αὐτὸ πνεῦμα τῆς πίστεως καὶ πιστεύομεν καὶ διὸ λαλοῦμεν de kata to gegrammenon Episteusa dio elalēsa hēmeis Echontes to auto pneuma tēs pisteōs kai pisteuomen kai dio laloumen — NA/TR · 13

knowing that the [One who] raised the Lord Jesus vvv will also raise us… with Jesus and present [us] with you [ in His presence ].
εἰδότες ὅτι ὁ ἐγείρας τὸν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐγερεῖ ἡμᾶς σὺν Ἰησοῦ καὶ παραστήσει σὺν ὑμῖν eidotes hoti ho egeiras ton Kyrion Iēsoun kai egerei hēmas syn Iēsou kai parastēsei syn hymin — NA/TR · 14

- All this [is] for your benefit…, so that the grace that is extending to more and more [people] may cause thanksgiving to overflow…, to the glory of God.
γὰρ τὰ πάντα δι’ ὑμᾶς ἵνα ἡ χάρις πλεονάσασα διὰ τῶν πλειόνων περισσεύσῃ τὴν εὐχαριστίαν εἰς τὴν δόξαν τοῦ Θεοῦ gar ta panta di’ hymas hina hē charis pleonasasa dia tōn pleionōn perisseusē tēn eucharistian eis tēn doxan tou Theou — NA/TR · 15

Therefore vvv we do not lose heart. [Though]… our outer self is wasting away, yet our inner [self] is being renewed day by day.
Διὸ οὐκ ἐγκακοῦμεν ἀλλ’ καὶ εἰ ἡμῶν ἔξω ὁ ἄνθρωπος διαφθείρεται ἀλλ’ ἡμῶν ἔσω ὁ ἀνακαινοῦται ἡμέρᾳ καὶ ἡμέρᾳ Dio ouk enkakoumen all’ kai ei hēmōn exō ho anthrōpos diaphtheiretai all’ hēmōn esō ho anakainoutai hēmera kai hēmera — NA/TR · 16

For our light [and] momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory [that is] far beyond comparison…
γὰρ τὸ ἡμῶν ἐλαφρὸν παραυτίκα τῆς θλίψεως κατεργάζεται ἡμῖν αἰώνιον βάρος δόξης καθ’ ὑπερβολὴν εἰς ὑπερβολὴν gar to hēmōn elaphron parautika tēs thlipseōs katergazetai hēmin aiōnion baros doxēs kath’ hyperbolēn eis hyperbolēn — NA/TR · 17

[So] we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what vvv is unseen. For what is seen [is] temporary, but what vvv is unseen [is] eternal.
ἡμῶν σκοπούντων μὴ τὰ βλεπόμενα ἀλλὰ τὰ μὴ βλεπόμενα γὰρ τὰ βλεπόμενα πρόσκαιρα δὲ τὰ μὴ βλεπόμενα αἰώνια hēmōn skopountōn mē ta blepomena alla ta mē blepomena gar ta blepomena proskaira de ta mē blepomena aiōnia — NA/TR · 18
