Paul Greets the Corinthians
1
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by [the] will of God, and Timothy [our] brother, To the church of God - in Corinth, together with all the saints throughout… Achaia:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and [the] Lord Jesus Christ.

The God of All Comfort

Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and [the] God of all comfort,

who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves [have received] from God.
ὁ παρακαλῶν ἡμᾶς ἐπὶ πάσῃ ἡμῶν τῇ θλίψει εἰς ἡμᾶς τὸ δύνασθαι παρακαλεῖν τοὺς ἐν πάσῃ θλίψει διὰ τῆς παρακλήσεως ἧς αὐτοὶ παρακαλούμεθα ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ ho parakalōn hēmas epi pasē hēmōn tē thlipsei eis hēmas to dynasthai parakalein tous en pasē thlipsei dia tēs paraklēseōs hēs autoi parakaloumetha hypo tou Theou — NA/TR · 4

For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.
ὅτι καθὼς τὰ παθήματα τοῦ Χριστοῦ περισσεύει εἰς ἡμᾶς οὕτως καὶ διὰ τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἡμῶν ἡ παράκλησις περισσεύει hoti kathōs ta pathēmata tou Christou perisseuei eis hēmas houtōs kai dia tou Christou hēmōn hē paraklēsis perisseuei — NA/TR · 5

- If we are afflicted, [it is] for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, [it is] for your comfort, which accomplishes in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we experience.
δὲ Εἴτε θλιβόμεθα ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν τῆς παρακλήσεως καὶ σωτηρίας εἴτε παρακαλούμεθα ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν τῆς παρακλήσεως τῆς ἐνεργουμένης ἐν ὑπομονῇ τῶν αὐτῶν παθημάτων ὧν ἡμεῖς καὶ πάσχομεν de Eite thlibometha hyper hymōn tēs paraklēseōs kai sōtērias eite parakaloumetha hyper hymōn tēs paraklēseōs tēs energoumenēs en hypomonē tōn autōn pathēmatōn hōn hēmeis kai paschomen — NA/TR · 6

And our hope for you [is] sure, [because] we know that just as vvv you share in [our] sufferings, so also [you will share] in [our] comfort.
καὶ ἡμῶν ἡ ἐλπὶς ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν βεβαία εἰδότες ὅτι ὡς ἐστε κοινωνοί τῶν παθημάτων οὕτως καὶ τῆς παρακλήσεως kai hēmōn hē elpis hyper hymōn bebaia eidotes hoti hōs este koinōnoi tōn pathēmatōn houtōs kai tēs paraklēseōs — NA/TR · 7

- vvv We do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the hardships we encountered in [the province of] Asia. We were under a burden… far beyond… our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life.
γὰρ Οὐ θέλομεν ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί ὑπὲρ τῆς θλίψεως ἡμῶν τῆς γενομένης ἐν τῇ Ἀσίᾳ ὅτι ἐβαρήθημεν καθ’ ὑπερβολὴν ὑπὲρ δύναμιν ὥστε ἡμᾶς ἐξαπορηθῆναι καὶ τοῦ ζῆν gar Ou thelomen hymas agnoein adelphoi hyper tēs thlipseōs hēmōn tēs genomenēs en tē Asia hoti ebarēthēmen kath’ hyperbolēn hyper dynamin hōste hēmas exaporēthēnai kai tou zēn — NA/TR · 8

Indeed, we felt vvv we were under the sentence of death, in order that vvv we would not trust in ourselves, but in God, who raises the dead.
ἀλλὰ αὐτοὶ ἐσχήκαμεν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς τὸ ἀπόκριμα τοῦ θανάτου ἵνα μὴ ὦμεν πεποιθότες ἐφ’ ἑαυτοῖς ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ τῷ Θεῷ τῷ ἐγείροντι τοὺς νεκρούς alla autoi eschēkamen en heautois to apokrima tou thanatou hina mē ōmen pepoithotes eph’ heautois all’ epi tō Theō tō egeironti tous nekrous — NA/TR · 9

[He] has delivered us from such a deadly peril…, and He will deliver [us]. In [Him] we have placed our hope that He will yet again deliver [us]…,
ὃς ἐρρύσατο ἡμᾶς ἐκ τηλικούτου θανάτου καὶ ῥύσεται εἰς ὃν ἠλπίκαμεν ὅτι καὶ ῥύσεται ἔτι hos errysato hēmas ek tēlikoutou thanatou kai rhysetai eis hon ēlpikamen hoti kai rhysetai eti — NA/TR · 10

- as you help us by [your] prayers. Then many… will give thanks on our behalf for the favor shown… us in answer to [ their prayers ].
καὶ ὑμῶν συνυπουργούντων ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν τῇ δεήσει ἵνα πολλῶν προσώπων εὐχαριστηθῇ ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἐκ τὸ χάρισμα εἰς ἡμᾶς διὰ πολλῶν kai hymōn synypourgountōn hyper hēmōn tē deēsei hina pollōn prosōpōn eucharistēthē hyper hēmōn ek to charisma eis hēmas dia pollōn — NA/TR · 11
Paul’s Change of Plans

For this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in relation to you, in [the] holiness and sincerity that [are from] God— not in worldly wisdom, but in [the] grace of God.
γὰρ αὕτη ἐστίν ἡμῶν Ἡ καύχησις ἡμῶν τῆς συνειδήσεως τὸ μαρτύριον ὅτι ἀνεστράφημεν ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ δὲ περισσοτέρως πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐν ἁγιότητι καὶ εἰλικρινείᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἐν σαρκικῇ σοφίᾳ ἀλλ’ ἐν χάριτι Θεοῦ gar hautē estin hēmōn Hē kauchēsis hēmōn tēs syneidēseōs to martyrion hoti anestraphēmen en tō kosmō de perissoterōs pros hymas en hagiotēti kai eilikrineia tou Theou kai ouk en sarkikē sophia all’ en chariti Theou — NA/TR · 12

For we do not write you anything… that is beyond… your ability to read [and]… understand. And I hope that you will understand [us] vvv completely,
γὰρ γράφομεν ὑμῖν οὐ ἄλλα ἀλλ’ ἢ ἃ ἀναγινώσκετε ἢ καὶ ἐπιγινώσκετε δὲ ἐλπίζω ὅτι ἐπιγνώσεσθε ἕως τέλους gar graphomen hymin ou alla all’ ē ha anaginōskete ē kai epiginōskete de elpizō hoti epignōsesthe heōs telous — NA/TR · 13

as vvv you have already understood us in part, that you may boast of us just as we vvv [ will boast ] of you in the day of our Lord Jesus.
καθὼς καὶ ἐπέγνωτε ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ μέρους ὅτι ὑμῶν καύχημα ἐσμεν καθάπερ ἡμῶν καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἡμῶν τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ kathōs kai epegnōte hēmas apo merous hoti hymōn kauchēma esmen kathaper hēmōn kai hymeis en tē hēmera hēmōn tou Kyriou Iēsou — NA/TR · 14

- Confident of this, I planned to visit… you first, so that you might receive a double blessing.
Καὶ τῇ πεποιθήσει ταύτῃ ἐβουλόμην ἐλθεῖν πρὸς ὑμᾶς πρότερον ἵνα σχῆτε δευτέραν χάριν Kai tē pepoithēsei tautē eboulomēn elthein pros hymas proteron hina schēte deuteran charin — NA/TR · 15

[I wanted] to visit vvv you on my way to Macedonia, and to return… to you from Macedonia, and then [to have] you help me on my way to Judea.
καὶ διελθεῖν δι’ ὑμῶν εἰς Μακεδονίαν καὶ ἐλθεῖν πάλιν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ Μακεδονίας καὶ ὑφ’ ὑμῶν προπεμφθῆναι εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν kai dielthein di’ hymōn eis Makedonian kai elthein palin pros hymas apo Makedonias kai hyph’ hymōn propemphthēnai eis tēn Ioudaian — NA/TR · 16

- When I planned this, vvv did I do it carelessly? Or do I make my plans… by human standards, so as [to say] “Yes, yes vvv… and also “No, no
οὖν βουλόμενος Τοῦτο ἄρα μήτι ἐχρησάμην τῇ ἐλαφρίᾳ ἢ βουλεύομαι ἃ βουλεύομαι κατὰ σάρκα ἵνα Ναί ναὶ παρ’ ἐμοὶ τό ᾖ καὶ τὸ Οὔ οὔ oun boulomenos Touto ara mēti echrēsamēn tē elaphria ē bouleuomai ha bouleuomai kata sarka hina Nai nai par’ emoi to ē kai to Ou ou — NA/TR · 17

But [as surely as] God [is] faithful, our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.”
δὲ ὁ Θεὸς πιστὸς ὅτι ἡμῶν ὁ λόγος ὁ πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἔστιν οὐκ Ναί καὶ Οὔ de ho Theos pistos hoti hēmōn ho logos ho pros hymas estin ouk Nai kai Ou — NA/TR · 18

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed among you - by me and Silvanus and Timothy, was not “Yes and “No, but in Him it has always been “Yes.
γὰρ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς ὁ κηρυχθείς ἐν ὑμῖν δι’ ἡμῶν δι’ ἐμοῦ καὶ Σιλουανοῦ καὶ Τιμοθέου ἐγένετο οὐκ Ναί καὶ Οὔ ἀλλὰ ἐν αὐτῷ γέγονεν Ναί gar ho Huios tou Theou Iēsous Christos ho kērychtheis en hymin di’ hēmōn di’ emou kai Silouanou kai Timotheou egeneto ouk Nai kai Ou alla en autō gegonen Nai — NA/TR · 19

For all [the] promises of God [are] “Yes in [Christ]. And so through Him, [our] “Amen vvv is spoken to [the] glory of God.
γὰρ ὅσαι ἐπαγγελίαι Θεοῦ τὸ Ναί ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ διὸ δι’ αὐτοῦ τὸ Ἀμὴν δι’ ἡμῶν πρὸς δόξαν τῷ Θεῷ gar hosai epangeliai Theou to Nai en autō kai dio di’ autou to Amēn di’ hēmōn pros doxan tō Theō — NA/TR · 20

Now [it is] God who establishes [both] us and you in Christ. He anointed us,

- placed His seal on us, and put [His] Spirit in our hearts as a pledge of what is to come.

- I call God as my… witness that [it was in order] to spare you [that] I did not return… to Corinth.
δὲ Ἐγὼ ἐπικαλοῦμαι τὸν Θεὸν ἐπὶ ἐμὴν τὴν ψυχήν μάρτυρα ὅτι φειδόμενος ὑμῶν ἦλθον οὐκέτι εἰς Κόρινθον de Egō epikaloumai ton Theon epi emēn tēn psychēn martyra hoti pheidomenos hymōn ēlthon ouketi eis Korinthon — NA/TR · 23

Not that we lord it over your faith, but we are fellow workers with you for [your] joy, because [it is] by faith [that] you stand firm.
οὐχ ὅτι κυριεύομεν ὑμῶν τῆς πίστεως ἀλλὰ ἐσμεν συνεργοί ὑμῶν τῆς χαρᾶς γὰρ τῇ πίστει ἑστήκατε ouch hoti kyrieuomen hymōn tēs pisteōs alla esmen synergoi hymōn tēs charas gar tē pistei hestēkate — NA/TR · 24
