Chapter 6
Lawsuits among Believers
1
[If] any of you has a grievance against another, how dare he go to law before the unrighteous [instead of]… before the saints!
2
- vvv Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, vvv are you not competent [ to judge ] trivial cases?
3
vvv Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!
οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι κρινοῦμεν ἀγγέλους μήτιγε βιωτικά ouk oidate hoti krinoumen angelous mētige biōtika — NA/TR · 3
4
So if you need to settle everyday matters, do you appoint [as judges] those of no standing in the church?
οὖν ἐὰν μὲν ἔχητε κριτήρια Βιωτικὰ καθίζετε τούτους τοὺς ἐξουθενημένους ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ oun ean men echēte kritēria Biōtika kathizete toutous tous exouthenēmenous en tē ekklēsia — NA/TR · 4
5
I say this to your vvv shame. Is there really no one among you wise [enough]… to arbitrate between his brothers?
6
Instead, [one] brother goes to law against [another], and this in front of unbelievers!
7
- vvv The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means [that] you {are} thoroughly defeated already. Why… not rather be wronged? Why… not rather be cheated?
οὖν μὲν ὅτι ἔχετε κρίματα μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν ἐστιν ὑμῖν ὅλως ἥττημα ἤδη διὰ τί οὐχὶ μᾶλλον ἀδικεῖσθε διὰ τί οὐχὶ μᾶλλον ἀποστερεῖσθε oun men hoti echete krimata meth’ heautōn estin hymin holōs hēttēma Ēdē dia ti ouchi mallon adikeisthe dia ti ouchi mallon apostereisthe — NA/TR · 7
8
Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, even [against your own] brothers!
Members of Christ
9
vvv vvv Do you not know that [the] wicked vvv will not inherit [the] kingdom of God? {Do} not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who submit to or perform homosexual acts,
10
nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will inherit [the] kingdom of God.
11
And that [is what] some [of] you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
12
“Everything is permissible for me, but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me, but I vvv will not be mastered by anything.
Πάντα ἔξεστιν μοι ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντα συμφέρει Πάντα ἔξεστιν μοι ἀλλ’ ἐγὼ οὐκ ἐξουσιασθήσομαι ὑπό τινος Panta exestin moi all’ ou panta sympherei Panta exestin moi all’ egō ouk exousiasthēsomai hypo tinos — NA/TR · 12
13
“- Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, but God will destroy them… both. The body [is] not [intended] for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.
Τὰ βρώματα τῇ κοιλίᾳ καὶ ἡ κοιλία τοῖς βρώμασιν δὲ ὁ Θεὸς καταργήσει ταύτην καὶ ταῦτα καὶ δὲ τὸ σῶμα οὐ τῇ πορνείᾳ ἀλλὰ τῷ Κυρίῳ καὶ ὁ Κύριος τῷ σώματι Ta brōmata tē koilia kai hē koilia tois brōmasin de ho Theos katargēsei tautēn kai tauta kai de to sōma ou tē porneia alla tō Kyriō kai ho Kyrios tō sōmati — NA/TR · 13
14
- By His power God raised the Lord {from the dead}, and He will raise us [also]…
15
vvv Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? vvv Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite [them]… with a prostitute? vvv Never!
16
Or vvv don’t you know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one [with her] in body? For it is said, “The two will become… one flesh.”
17
But he who unites himself with the Lord is one [with Him] [in] spirit.
δὲ ὁ κολλώμενος τῷ Κυρίῳ ἐστιν ἓν πνεῦμά de ho kollōmenos tō Kyriō estin hen pneuma — NA/TR · 17
The Temple of the Holy Spirit
18
Flee from sexual immorality. Every [other] sin a man vvv can commit is outside [his] body, but he who sins sexually sins against [his] own body.
Φεύγετε τὴν πορνείαν πᾶν ἁμάρτημα ὃ ἄνθρωπος ἐὰν ποιήσῃ ἐστιν ἐκτὸς τοῦ σώματός δὲ ὁ πορνεύων ἁμαρτάνει εἰς τὸ ἴδιον σῶμα Pheugete tēn porneian pan hamartēma ho anthrōpos ean poiēsē estin ektos tou sōmatos de ho porneuōn hamartanei eis to idion sōma — NA/TR · 18
19
- vvv Do you not know that your body [is] a temple of the Holy Spirit [who] is in you, whom you have [received] from God? You are not your own;
ἢ οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι ὑμῶν τὸ σῶμα ναὸς τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματός ἐστιν ἐν ὑμῖν οὗ ἔχετε ἀπὸ Θεοῦ καὶ ἐστὲ οὐκ ἑαυτῶν ē ouk oidate hoti hymōn to sōma naos tou Hagiou Pneumatos estin en hymin hou echete apo Theou kai este ouk heautōn — NA/TR · 19
20
- you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.
