Chapter 11

Roles in Worship

1

You are to imitate me, just as I [imitate] Christ.

γίνεσθε Μιμηταί μου καθὼς κἀγὼ Χριστοῦ ginesthe Mimētai mou kathōs kagō Christou — NA/TR · 1

Now I commend you for remembering me in everything and [for] maintaining the traditions, just as I passed [them] on to you.

δὲ Ἐπαινῶ ὑμᾶς ὅτι μέμνησθε μου πάντα καὶ κατέχετε τὰς παραδόσεις καθὼς παρέδωκα ὑμῖν de Epainō hymas hoti memnēsthe mou panta kai katechete tas paradoseis kathōs paredōka hymin — NA/TR · 2

But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, and [the] head of [the] woman [is] man, and [the] head of Christ [is] God.

δὲ Θέλω ὑμᾶς εἰδέναι ὅτι ἡ κεφαλὴ παντὸς ἀνδρὸς ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός δὲ κεφαλὴ γυναικὸς ὁ ἀνήρ δὲ κεφαλὴ τοῦ Χριστοῦ ὁ Θεός de Thelō hymas eidenai hoti hē kephalē pantos andros estin ho Christos de kephalē gynaikos ho anēr de kephalē tou Christou ho Theos — NA/TR · 3

Every man [who] prays or prophesies with [his] head covered dishonors his head.

Πᾶς ἀνὴρ προσευχόμενος ἢ προφητεύων ἔχων κεφαλῆς κατὰ καταισχύνει αὐτοῦ τὴν κεφαλὴν Pas anēr proseuchomenos ē prophēteuōn echōn kephalēs kata kataischynei autou tēn kephalēn — NA/TR · 4

And every woman [who] prays or prophesies with [her] head uncovered dishonors her head, for it is vvv vvv vvv just [as if] her head were shaved.

δὲ πᾶσα γυνὴ προσευχομένη ἢ προφητεύουσα τῇ κεφαλῇ ἀκατακαλύπτῳ καταισχύνει αὐτῆς τὴν κεφαλὴν γάρ ἐστιν ἓν καὶ τὸ αὐτὸ τῇ ἐξυρημένῃ de pasa gynē proseuchomenē ē prophēteuousa tē kephalē akatakalyptō kataischynei autēs tēn kephalēn gar estin hen kai to auto tē exyrēmenē — NA/TR · 5

  • If a woman {does} not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off. And if [it is] shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head.

γὰρ εἰ γυνή οὐ κατακαλύπτεται καὶ κειράσθω δὲ εἰ αἰσχρὸν γυναικὶ τὸ κείρασθαι ἢ ξυρᾶσθαι κατακαλυπτέσθω gar ei gynē ou katakalyptetai kai keirasthō de ei aischron gynaiki to keirasthai ē xyrasthai katakalyptesthō — NA/TR · 6

  • A man ought not to cover [his] head, [since] he is [the] image and glory of God; but the woman is [the] glory of man.

γὰρ μὲν Ἀνὴρ ὀφείλει οὐκ κατακαλύπτεσθαι τὴν κεφαλήν ὑπάρχων εἰκὼν καὶ δόξα Θεοῦ δὲ ἡ γυνὴ ἐστιν δόξα ἀνδρός gar men Anēr opheilei ouk katakalyptesthai tēn kephalēn hyparchōn eikōn kai doxa Theou de hē gynē estin doxa andros — NA/TR · 7

For man did not come… from woman, but woman from man.

γάρ ἀνὴρ ἐστιν οὐ ἐκ γυναικός ἀλλὰ γυνὴ ἐξ ἀνδρός gar anēr estin ou ek gynaikos alla gynē ex andros — NA/TR · 8

Neither… {was} man created for woman, but woman for man.

καὶ γὰρ οὐκ ἀνὴρ ἐκτίσθη διὰ τὴν γυναῖκα ἀλλὰ γυνὴ διὰ τὸν ἄνδρα kai gar ouk anēr ektisthē dia tēn gynaika alla gynē dia ton andra — NA/TR · 9

For this reason… a woman ought to have a sign of authority on [her] head, because of the angels.

διὰ τοῦτο ἡ γυνὴ ὀφείλει ἔχειν ἐξουσίαν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς διὰ τοὺς ἀγγέλους dia touto hē gynē opheilei echein exousian epi tēs kephalēs dia tous angelous — NA/TR · 10

In [the] Lord, however, woman [is] not independent [of] man, nor [is] man independent of woman.

ἐν Κυρίῳ Πλὴν γυνὴ οὔτε χωρὶς ἀνδρὸς οὔτε ἀνὴρ χωρὶς γυναικὸς en Kyriō Plēn gynē oute chōris andros oute anēr chōris gynaikos — NA/TR · 11

For just as woman [came] from man, so also man [is] born of woman. But everything [comes] from God.

γὰρ ὥσπερ ἡ γυνὴ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνδρός οὕτως καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ διὰ τῆς γυναικός δὲ τὰ πάντα ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ gar hōsper hē gynē ek tou andros houtōs kai ho anēr dia tēs gynaikos de ta panta ek tou Theou — NA/TR · 12

Judge for vvv yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?

κρίνατε Ἐν ὑμῖν αὐτοῖς ἐστὶν πρέπον γυναῖκα προσεύχεσθαι τῷ Θεῷ ἀκατακάλυπτον krinate En hymin autois estin prepon gynaika proseuchesthai tō Theō akatakalypton — NA/TR · 13

Doesn’t nature itself teach you that vvv if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him,

οὐδὲ φύσις αὐτὴ ἡ διδάσκει ὑμᾶς ὅτι μὲν ἐὰν ἀνὴρ κομᾷ ἐστιν ἀτιμία αὐτῷ oude physis autē hē didaskei hymas hoti men ean anēr koma estin atimia autō — NA/TR · 14

but [that] if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.

δὲ ἐὰν γυνὴ κομᾷ ἐστιν αὐτῇ δόξα ὅτι ἡ κόμη δέδοται αὐτῇ ἀντὶ περιβολαίου de ean gynē koma estin autē doxa hoti hē komē dedotai autē anti peribolaiou — NA/TR · 15

  • If anyone is inclined to dispute [this]…, we have no [other] practice, nor [do] the churches of God.

Sharing in the Lord’s Supper

  • In the [following] instructions vvv I have no praise to offer, because your gatherings vvv vvv vvv vvv do more harm vvv vvv than good.

δὲ Τοῦτο παραγγέλλων οὐκ ἐπαινῶ ὅτι συνέρχεσθε οὐκ ἀλλὰ εἰς τὸ ἧσσον εἰς τὸ κρεῖσσον de Touto parangellōn ouk epainō hoti synerchesthe ouk alla eis to hēsson eis to kreisson — NA/TR · 17

vvv vvv First of all, I hear that [when] you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it.

γὰρ μὲν πρῶτον ἀκούω ὑμῶν συνερχομένων ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ ὑπάρχειν σχίσματα ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ μέρος πιστεύω τι gar men prōton akouō hymōn synerchomenōn en ekklēsia hyparchein schismata en hymin kai meros pisteuō ti — NA/TR · 18

And indeed, there must be differences among you to vvv show which of you are approved.

καὶ γὰρ δεῖ εἶναι αἱρέσεις ἐν ὑμῖν ἵνα γένωνται φανεροὶ καὶ οἱ ἐν ὑμῖν δόκιμοι kai gar dei einai haireseis en hymin hina genōntai phaneroi kai hoi en hymin dokimoi — NA/TR · 19

Now then, [when] you come together…, it is not [the] Lord’s Supper you eat.

οὖν ὑμῶν Συνερχομένων ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ἔστιν οὐκ κυριακὸν δεῖπνον φαγεῖν oun hymōn Synerchomenōn epi to auto estin ouk kyriakon deipnon phagein — NA/TR · 20

For as you eat, each [of you] goes ahead without sharing his meal. While [one] remains hungry, [another] gets drunk.

γὰρ ἐν τῷ φαγεῖν ἕκαστος προλαμβάνει τὸ ἴδιον δεῖπνον καὶ μὲν ὃς πεινᾷ δὲ ὃς μεθύει gar en tō phagein hekastos prolambanei to idion deipnon kai men hos peina de hos methyei — NA/TR · 21

Don’t… you have [your own] homes in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What can I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? No, I will not!

γὰρ οὐκ ἔχετε μὴ οἰκίας εἰς τὸ ἐσθίειν καὶ πίνειν ἢ καταφρονεῖτε τῆς ἐκκλησίας τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ καταισχύνετε τοὺς ἔχοντας μὴ τί εἴπω ὑμῖν ἐπαινέσω ὑμᾶς ἐν τούτῳ οὐκ ἐπαινῶ gar ouk echete mē oikias eis to esthiein kai pinein ē kataphroneite tēs ekklēsias tou Theou kai kataischynete tous echontas mē ti eipō hymin epainesō hymas en toutō ouk epainō — NA/TR · 22

For I received from the Lord what vvv I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread,

γὰρ Ἐγὼ παρέλαβον ἀπὸ τοῦ Κυρίου ὃ καὶ παρέδωκα ὑμῖν ὅτι ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ᾗ παρεδίδετο ἔλαβεν ἄρτον gar Egō parelabon apo tou Kyriou ho kai paredōka hymin hoti ho Kyrios Iēsous en tē nykti hē paredideto elaben arton — NA/TR · 23

and when He had given thanks, He broke [it] and said, “This is My body, which [is] for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

καὶ εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ εἶπεν Τοῦτό ἐστιν μού τὸ σῶμα τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν ποιεῖτε τοῦτο εἰς ἀνάμνησιν τὴν ἐμὴν kai eucharistēsas eklasen kai eipen Touto estin mou to sōma to hyper hymōn poieite touto eis anamnēsin tēn emēn — NA/TR · 24

In the same way…, after supper [He took] the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as vvv you drink [it], in remembrance of Me.

ὡσαύτως καὶ μετὰ τὸ δειπνῆσαι τὸ ποτήριον λέγων Τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον ἐστὶν ἡ καινὴ διαθήκη ἐν ἐμῷ τῷ αἵματι ποιεῖτε τοῦτο ὁσάκις ἐὰν πίνητε εἰς τὴν ἀνάμνησιν ἐμὴν hōsautōs kai meta to deipnēsai to potērion legōn Touto to potērion estin hē kainē diathēkē en emō tō haimati poieite touto hosakis ean pinēte eis tēn anamnēsin emēn — NA/TR · 25

For as often as vvv you eat this bread and drink [this] cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until… He comes.

γὰρ ὁσάκις ἐὰν ἐσθίητε τοῦτον τὸν ἄρτον καὶ πίνητε τὸ ποτήριον καταγγέλλετε τοῦ Κυρίου τὸν θάνατον ἄχρι οὗ ἔλθῃ gar hosakis ean esthiēte touton ton arton kai pinēte to potērion katangellete tou Kyriou ton thanaton achri hou elthē — NA/TR · 26

Therefore, whoever… eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.

Ὥστε ὃς ἂν ἐσθίῃ τὸν ἄρτον ἢ πίνῃ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦ Κυρίου ἀναξίως ἔσται ἔνοχος τοῦ σώματος καὶ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ Κυρίου Hōste hos an esthiē ton arton ē pinē to potērion tou Kyriou anaxiōs estai enochos tou sōmatos kai tou haimatos tou Kyriou — NA/TR · 27

  • Each one must examine himself [before]… he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.

δὲ ἄνθρωπος δοκιμαζέτω ἑαυτόν καὶ οὕτως ἐσθιέτω ἐκ τοῦ ἄρτου καὶ πινέτω ἐκ τοῦ ποτηρίου de anthrōpos dokimazetō heauton kai houtōs esthietō ek tou artou kai pinetō ek tou potēriou — NA/TR · 28

For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.

γὰρ ὁ ἐσθίων καὶ πίνων μὴ διακρίνων τὸ σῶμα ἐσθίει καὶ πίνει κρίμα ἑαυτῷ gar ho esthiōn kai pinōn mē diakrinōn to sōma esthiei kai pinei krima heautō — NA/TR · 29

30

That is why… many among you [are] weak and sick, and a number [of you] have fallen asleep.

διὰ τοῦτο πολλοὶ ἐν ὑμῖν ἀσθενεῖς καὶ ἄρρωστοι καὶ ἱκανοί κοιμῶνται dia touto polloi en hymin astheneis kai arrōstoi kai hikanoi koimōntai — NA/TR · 30

Now if we judged ourselves {properly}, vvv vvv we would not come under judgment.

δὲ Εἰ διεκρίνομεν ἑαυτοὺς ἂν οὐκ ἐκρινόμεθα de Ei diekrinomen heautous an ouk ekrinometha — NA/TR · 31

But when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that vvv we will not be condemned with the world.

δὲ κρινόμενοι ὑπὸ τοῦ Κυρίου παιδευόμεθα ἵνα μὴ κατακριθῶμεν σὺν τῷ κόσμῳ de krinomenoi hypo tou Kyriou paideuometha hina mē katakrithōmen syn tō kosmō — NA/TR · 32

So, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.

Ὥστε μου ἀδελφοί συνερχόμενοι εἰς τὸ φαγεῖν ἐκδέχεσθε ἀλλήλους Hōste mou adelphoi synerchomenoi eis to phagein ekdechesthe allēlous — NA/TR · 33

If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you come together [it will not result] in judgment. And when vvv I come, I will give instructions about the remaining matters.

εἴ τις πεινᾷ ἐσθιέτω ἐν οἴκῳ ἵνα συνέρχησθε μὴ εἰς κρίμα δὲ ὡς ἂν ἔλθω διατάξομαι Τὰ λοιπὰ ei tis peina esthietō en oikō hina synerchēsthe mē eis krima de hōs an elthō diataxomai Ta loipa — NA/TR · 34
