Chapter 6
The Choosing of the Seven

- In those days [when] the disciples were increasing in number, the Grecian [Jews among them] began to grumble against the Hebraic [Jews] because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution [ of food ].
δὲ Ἐν ταύταις ταῖς ἡμέραις τῶν μαθητῶν πληθυνόντων τῶν Ἑλληνιστῶν ἐγένετο γογγυσμὸς πρὸς τοὺς Ἑβραίους ὅτι αὐτῶν αἱ χῆραι παρεθεωροῦντο ἐν τῇ τῇ καθημερινῇ διακονίᾳ de En tautais tais hēmerais tōn mathētōn plēthynontōn tōn Hellēnistōn egeneto gongysmos pros tous Hebraious hoti autōn hai chērai paretheōrounto en tē tē kathēmerinē diakonia — NA/TR · 1

So the Twelve summoned all the disciples [and] said, “It is vvv unacceptable [for] us to neglect the word of God [in order] to wait on tables.
δὲ οἱ δώδεκα Προσκαλεσάμενοι τὸ πλῆθος τῶν μαθητῶν εἶπαν ἐστιν Οὐκ ἀρεστόν ἡμᾶς καταλείψαντας τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ διακονεῖν τραπέζαις de hoi dōdeka Proskalesamenoi to plēthos tōn mathētōn eipan estin Ouk areston hēmas kataleipsantas ton logon tou Theou diakonein trapezais — NA/TR · 2

Therefore, brothers, select from among you seven men confirmed to be full of [the] Spirit and wisdom. We will assign this - responsibility [to them]
δέ ἀδελφοί ἐπισκέψασθε ἐξ ὑμῶν ἑπτὰ ἄνδρας μαρτυρουμένους πλήρεις Πνεύματος καὶ σοφίας καταστήσομεν ταύτης ἐπὶ τῆς χρείας οὓς de adelphoi episkepsasthe ex hymōn hepta andras martyroumenous plēreis Pneumatos kai sophias katastēsomen tautēs epi tēs chreias hous — NA/TR · 3

and will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.
δὲ ἡμεῖς προσκαρτερήσομεν τῇ προσευχῇ καὶ τῇ διακονίᾳ τοῦ λόγου de hēmeis proskarterēsomen tē proseuchē kai tē diakonia tou logou — NA/TR · 4

- [This] proposal pleased… the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and [of the] Holy Spirit, as well as Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert [to Judaism].
Καὶ ὁ λόγος ἤρεσεν ἐνώπιον τοῦ παντὸς πλήθους καὶ ἐξελέξαντο Στέφανον ἄνδρα πλήρης πίστεως καὶ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος καὶ Φίλιππον καὶ Πρόχορον καὶ Νικάνορα καὶ Τίμωνα καὶ Παρμενᾶν καὶ Νικόλαον Ἀντιοχέα προσήλυτον Kai ho logos ēresen enōpion tou pantos plēthous kai exelexanto Stephanon andra plērēs pisteōs kai Hagiou Pneumatos kai Philippon kai Prochoron kai Nikanora kai Timōna kai Parmenan kai Nikolaon Antiochea prosēlyton — NA/TR · 5

They presented [these seven] to the apostles, [who] prayed [and] laid [their] hands on them.
ἔστησαν οὓς ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀποστόλων καὶ προσευξάμενοι ἐπέθηκαν τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῖς estēsan hous enōpion tōn apostolōn kai proseuxamenoi epethēkan tas cheiras autois — NA/TR · 6

[So] the word of God continued to spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem grew rapidly, and a great number of priests became obedient to the faith.

The Arrest of Stephen

Now Stephen, [who was] full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people.
δὲ Στέφανος πλήρης χάριτος καὶ δυνάμεως ἐποίει μεγάλα τέρατα καὶ σημεῖα ἐν τῷ λαῷ de Stephanos plērēs charitos kai dynameōs epoiei megala terata kai sēmeia en tō laō — NA/TR · 8

But resistance arose - from what was called [the] Synagogue of the Freedmen, including Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and men from [the provinces of] Cilicia and Asia. They disputed with Stephen,
δέ ἀνέστησαν τινες τῶν ἐκ τῆς λεγομένης συναγωγῆς τῆς Λιβερτίνων καὶ Κυρηναίων καὶ Ἀλεξανδρέων καὶ τῶν ἀπὸ Κιλικίας καὶ Ἀσίας συζητοῦντες τῷ Στεφάνῳ de anestēsan tines tōn ek tēs legomenēs synagōgēs tēs Libertinōn kai Kyrēnaiōn kai Alexandreōn kai tōn apo Kilikias kai Asias syzētountes tō Stephanō — NA/TR · 9

[but] vvv they could not stand up to [his] wisdom [or] the Spirit by whom he spoke.
καὶ οὐκ ἴσχυον ἀντιστῆναι τῇ σοφίᾳ καὶ τῷ Πνεύματι ᾧ ἐλάλει kai ouk ischyon antistēnai tē sophia kai tō Pneumati hō elalei — NA/TR · 10

Then they prompted [some] men to say -, “We heard [Stephen] speak words of blasphemy against Moses and [against] God.
Τότε ὑπέβαλον ἄνδρας λέγοντας ὅτι Ἀκηκόαμεν αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ῥήματα βλάσφημα εἰς Μωϋσῆν καὶ τὸν Θεόν Tote hypebalon andras legontas hoti Akēkoamen autou lalountos rhēmata blasphēma eis Mōusēn kai ton Theon — NA/TR · 11

[So] they stirred up the people, - elders, and scribes and confronted [Stephen]. They seized him and brought [him] before the Sanhedrin,
τε συνεκίνησάν τὸν λαὸν καὶ τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους καὶ τοὺς γραμματεῖς καὶ ἐπιστάντες συνήρπασαν αὐτὸν καὶ ἤγαγον εἰς τὸ συνέδριον te synekinēsan ton laon kai tous presbyterous kai tous grammateis kai epistantes synērpasan auton kai ēgagon eis to synedrion — NA/TR · 12

[where] they presented false witnesses [who] said, “This man vvv never stops speaking… against this holy place and [against] the law.
τε Ἔστησάν ψευδεῖς μάρτυρας λέγοντας οὗτος Ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὐ παύεται λαλῶν ῥήματα κατὰ τοῦ τούτου τοῦ ἁγίου τόπου καὶ τοῦ νόμου te Estēsan pseudeis martyras legontas houtos Ho anthrōpos ou pauetai lalōn rhēmata kata tou toutou tou hagiou topou kai tou nomou — NA/TR · 13

For we have heard him say that Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.
γὰρ ἀκηκόαμεν αὐτοῦ λέγοντος ὅτι οὗτος Ἰησοῦς ὁ Ναζωραῖος καταλύσει τοῦτον τὸν τόπον καὶ ἀλλάξει τὰ ἔθη ἃ Μωϋσῆς παρέδωκεν ἡμῖν gar akēkoamen autou legontos hoti houtos Iēsous ho Nazōraios katalysei touton ton topon kai allaxei ta ethē ha Mōusēs paredōken hēmin — NA/TR · 14

All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at [Stephen], [and] they saw that his face [was] like [the] face of an angel.
