Chapter 4

Peter and John before the Sanhedrin

1

While [Peter and John] were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them,

δὲ αὐτῶν Λαλούντων πρὸς τὸν λαὸν οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ ὁ στρατηγὸς τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ οἱ Σαδδουκαῖοι ἐπέστησαν αὐτοῖς de autōn Lalountōn pros ton laon hoi hiereis kai ho stratēgos tou hierou kai hoi Saddoukaioi epestēsan autois — NA/TR · 1

greatly disturbed that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of [the] dead.

  • They seized… [Peter and John], and because it was vvv evening, they put [them] in custody until the next day.

καὶ ἐπέβαλον τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῖς καὶ γὰρ ἦν ἤδη ἑσπέρα ἔθεντο εἰς τήρησιν εἰς τὴν αὔριον kai epebalon tas cheiras autois kai gar ēn ēdē hespera ethento eis tērēsin eis tēn aurion — NA/TR · 3

But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand.

    • The next day [the] rulers, - elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem,

δὲ Ἐγένετο ἐπὶ τὴν αὔριον αὐτῶν τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους καὶ τοὺς γραμματεῖς συναχθῆναι ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ de Egeneto epi tēn aurion autōn tous archontas kai tous presbyterous kai tous grammateis synachthēnai en Ierousalēm — NA/TR · 5

along with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and many others… from the high priest’s family.

καὶ Ἅννας ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς καὶ Καϊάφας καὶ Ἰωάννης καὶ Ἀλέξανδρος καὶ ὅσοι ἦσαν ἐκ ἀρχιερατικοῦ γένους kai Hannas ho archiereus kai Kaiaphas kai Iōannēs kai Alexandros kai hosoi ēsan ek archieratikou genous — NA/TR · 6

  • They had [Peter and John] vvv vvv {brought} in [and] began to question them: “By what power or what name {did} you do this?

Then Peter, filled with [the] Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people!

If we are being examined today about a kind service [to a] man [who was] lame, [to determine] how he was healed,

εἰ ἡμεῖς ἀνακρινόμεθα σήμερον ἐπὶ εὐεργεσίᾳ ἀνθρώπου ἀσθενοῦς ἐν τίνι οὗτος σέσωσται ei hēmeis anakrinometha sēmeron epi euergesia anthrōpou asthenous en tini houtos sesōstai — NA/TR · 9

[then] let this be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel: [It is] by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified [but] whom God raised from [the] dead, [that]… this [man] stands before you healed.

ἔστω γνωστὸν πᾶσιν ὑμῖν καὶ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ Ἰσραὴλ ὅτι ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ Ναζωραίου ὃν ὑμεῖς ἐσταυρώσατε ὃν ὁ Θεὸς ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν ἐν τούτῳ οὗτος παρέστηκεν ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ὑγιής estō gnōston pasin hymin kai panti tō laō Israēl hoti en tō onomati Iēsou Christou tou Nazōraiou hon hymeis estaurōsate hon ho Theos ēgeiren ek nekrōn en toutō houtos parestēken enōpion hymōn hygiēs — NA/TR · 10

This [Jesus] is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become… [the] cornerstone…’

  • Salvation exists in vvv no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.

The Name Forbidden

[When] they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they marveled and took note that [these men] had been with Jesus.

δὲ Θεωροῦντες τὴν παρρησίαν τοῦ Πέτρου καὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ καταλαβόμενοι ὅτι εἰσιν ἀγράμματοί καὶ ἰδιῶται ἄνθρωποι ἐθαύμαζον τε ἐπεγίνωσκόν ὅτι αὐτοὺς ἦσαν σὺν τῷ Ἰησοῦ de Theōrountes tēn parrēsian tou Petrou kai Iōannou kai katalabomenoi hoti eisin agrammatoi kai idiōtai anthrōpoi ethaumazon te epeginōskon hoti autous ēsan syn tō Iēsou — NA/TR · 13

And seeing the man who had been healed standing [there] with them, they had nothing to say in response.

τε βλέποντες τόν ἄνθρωπον τὸν τεθεραπευμένον ἑστῶτα σὺν αὐτοῖς εἶχον οὐδὲν ἀντειπεῖν te blepontes ton anthrōpon ton tetherapeumenon hestōta syn autois eichon ouden anteipein — NA/TR · 14

So they ordered them to leave… the Sanhedrin [and] then conferred vvv together.

δὲ κελεύσαντες αὐτοὺς ἀπελθεῖν ἔξω τοῦ συνεδρίου συνέβαλλον πρὸς ἀλλήλους de keleusantes autous apelthein exō tou synedriou syneballon pros allēlous — NA/TR · 15

“What shall we do with these men? they asked. “- [It] is clear to everyone living [in] Jerusalem that vvv a remarkable miracle has occurred through them, and vvv we cannot deny [it].

Τί ποιήσωμεν τοῖς τούτοις ἀνθρώποις λέγοντες γὰρ φανερόν πᾶσιν τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ὅτι μὲν γνωστὸν σημεῖον γέγονεν δι’ αὐτῶν καὶ οὐ δυνάμεθα ἀρνεῖσθαι Ti poiēsōmen tois toutois anthrōpois legontes gar phaneron pasin tois katoikousin Ierousalēm hoti men gnōston sēmeion gegonen di’ autōn kai ou dynametha arneisthai — NA/TR · 16

But to vvv keep [this message] from spreading any further vvv among the people, we must warn them not to speak to anyone in this name.

ἀλλ’ ἵνα μὴ διανεμηθῇ πλεῖον ἐπὶ εἰς τὸν λαόν ἀπειλησώμεθα αὐτοῖς μηκέτι λαλεῖν μηδενὶ ἀνθρώπων ἐπὶ τούτῳ τῷ ὀνόματι all’ hina mē dianemēthē pleion epi eis ton laon apeilēsōmetha autois mēketi lalein mēdeni anthrōpōn epi toutō tō onomati — NA/TR · 17

Then they called them in [again] and commanded [them] not to speak [or] teach at all in the name of Jesus.

Καὶ καλέσαντες αὐτοὺς παρήγγειλαν μὴ φθέγγεσθαι μηδὲ διδάσκειν τὸ καθόλου ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ Kai kalesantes autous parēngeilan mē phthengesthai mēde didaskein to katholou epi tō onomati tou Iēsou — NA/TR · 18

But Peter and John replied…, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight… to listen to you rather than God.

δὲ Ὁ Πέτρος καὶ Ἰωάννης ἀποκριθέντες εἶπον πρὸς αὐτούς κρίνατε Εἰ ἐστιν δίκαιόν ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀκούειν ὑμῶν μᾶλλον ἢ τοῦ Θεοῦ de Ho Petros kai Iōannēs apokrithentes eipon pros autous krinate Ei estin dikaion enōpion tou Theou akouein hymōn mallon ē tou Theou — NA/TR · 19

For we vvv cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.

γὰρ ἡμεῖς οὐ δυνάμεθα μὴ λαλεῖν ἃ εἴδαμεν καὶ ἠκούσαμεν gar hēmeis ou dynametha mē lalein ha eidamen kai ēkousamen — NA/TR · 20

  • [After] further threats they let them go… They could not find a way… to punish them, because {all} the people vvv were glorifying God for what had happened.

Οἱ δὲ προσαπειλησάμενοι ἀπέλυσαν αὐτούς εὑρίσκοντες μηδὲν πῶς τὸ κολάσωνται αὐτούς διὰ τὸν λαόν ὅτι πάντες ἐδόξαζον τὸν Θεὸν ἐπὶ τῷ γεγονότι Hoi de prosapeilēsamenoi apelysan autous heuriskontes mēden pōs to kolasōntai autous dia ton laon hoti pantes edoxazon ton Theon epi tō gegonoti — NA/TR · 21

For the man who - was miraculously healed… was over forty years [old].

γὰρ ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐφ’ ὃν τοῦτο τὸ σημεῖον τῆς ἰάσεως γεγόνει ἦν πλειόνων τεσσεράκοντα ἐτῶν gar ho anthrōpos eph’ hon touto to sēmeion tēs iaseōs gegonei ēn pleionōn tesserakonta etōn — NA/TR · 22

The Believers’ Prayer

  • On their release, [Peter and John] returned to [their] own people and reported everything that the chief priests and elders had said to them.

δὲ Ἀπολυθέντες ἦλθον πρὸς τοὺς ἰδίους καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν ὅσα οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτοὺς de Apolythentes ēlthon pros tous idious kai apēngeilan hosa hoi archiereis kai hoi presbyteroi eipan pros autous — NA/TR · 23

[When] [the believers] heard this, they lifted up [their] voices to God with one accord. “Sovereign Lord, they said, “You made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them.

δὲ οἱ ἀκούσαντες ἦραν φωνὴν πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν ὁμοθυμαδὸν Δέσποτα καὶ εἶπαν σὺ ὁ ποιήσας τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐτοῖς de hoi akousantes ēran phōnēn pros ton Theon homothymadon Despota kai eipan sy ho poiēsas ton ouranon kai tēn gēn kai tēn thalassan kai panta ta en autois — NA/TR · 24

[You] spoke by [the] Holy Spirit through [the] mouth of Your servant, our father David -: ‘Why {do} the nations rage and [the] peoples plot in vain?

The kings of the earth take [their] stand and the rulers gather together… against the Lord and against His Anointed One.’

  • In fact, this is the [very] city [where] Herod vvv and Pontius Pilate conspired with [the] Gentiles and [the] people of Israel against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed.

γὰρ ἐπ’ ἀληθείας ταύτῃ τῇ πόλει ἐν Ἡρῴδης τε καὶ Πόντιος Πιλᾶτος Συνήχθησαν σὺν ἔθνεσιν καὶ λαοῖς Ἰσραήλ ἐπὶ σου ἅγιον τὸν Παῖδά Ἰησοῦν ὃν ἔχρισας gar ep’ alētheias tautē tē polei en Hērōdēs te kai Pontios Pilatos Synēchthēsan syn ethnesin kai laois Israēl epi sou hagion ton Paida Iēsoun hon echrisas — NA/TR · 27

They carried out what Your hand and - will had decided beforehand would happen.

ποιῆσαι ὅσα σου ἡ χείρ καὶ ἡ σου βουλὴ προώρισεν γενέσθαι poiēsai hosa sou hē cheir kai hē sou boulē proōrisen genesthai — NA/TR · 28

And now, Lord, consider… their threats, and enable Your servants to speak Your word with complete boldness,

καὶ τὰ νῦν Κύριε ἔπιδε ἐπὶ αὐτῶν τὰς ἀπειλὰς καὶ δὸς τοῖς σου δούλοις λαλεῖν σου τὸν λόγον μετὰ πάσης παρρησίας kai ta nyn Kyrie epide epi autōn tas apeilas kai dos tois sou doulois lalein sou ton logon meta pasēs parrēsias — NA/TR · 29

as… You stretch out Your hand to heal and [perform] signs and wonders through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.

[After] they had prayed, [their] meeting place… was shaken, and vvv they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God vvv boldly.

Sharing among Believers

  • The multitude of believers was one [in] heart and soul. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared… everything they owned.

δὲ Τοῦ πλήθους τῶν πιστευσάντων ἦν μία καρδία καὶ ψυχὴ καὶ οὐδὲ εἷς ἔλεγεν τι τῶν αὐτῷ ὑπαρχόντων εἶναι ἴδιον ἀλλ’ ἦν αὐτοῖς κοινά πάντα de Tou plēthous tōn pisteusantōn ēn mia kardia kai psychē kai oude heis elegen ti tōn autō hyparchontōn einai idion all’ ēn autois koina panta — NA/TR · 32

  • [With] great power the apostles continued to give [their] testimony about the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And abundant grace was upon them all.

  • There were no needy ones among them, because those who vvv owned lands or houses would sell [ their property ], bring the proceeds from [the] sales,

and lay [them] at the vvv apostles’ feet for distribution [to] anyone as… he had need.

  • Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus…, whom the apostles called Barnabas (vvv vvv meaning Son of Encouragement),

sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid [it] at the vvv apostles’ feet.
