Paul’s Journey to Jerusalem

vvv vvv After we had torn ourselves away from them, we sailed directly… to Cos, and the next [day] on to Rhodes, and from there to Patara.

- Finding a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, we boarded [it] [and] set sail.
καὶ εὑρόντες πλοῖον διαπερῶν εἰς Φοινίκην ἐπιβάντες ἀνήχθημεν kai heurontes ploion diaperōn eis Phoinikēn epibantes anēchthēmen — NA/TR · 2

[After] sighting Cyprus and passing south of it…, we sailed on to Syria and landed at Tyre, [where] the ship was to unload [its] cargo.
δὲ ἀναφάναντες τὴν Κύπρον καὶ καταλιπόντες αὐτὴν εὐώνυμον ἐπλέομεν εἰς Συρίαν καὶ κατήλθομεν εἰς Τύρον γὰρ ἐκεῖσε τὸ πλοῖον ἦν ἀποφορτιζόμενον τὸν γόμον de anaphanantes tēn Kypron kai katalipontes autēn euōnymon epleomen eis Syrian kai katēlthomen eis Tyron gar ekeise to ploion ēn apophortizomenon ton gomon — NA/TR · 3

- We sought out the disciples [in Tyre] [and] stayed [with them] seven days. Through the Spirit [they] kept telling Paul not to go up to Jerusalem.

But when our time [there] had ended, we set out on our journey. All [the disciples], with [their] wives and children, accompanied us vvv out of the city and knelt down… on the beach to pray [with us].

[And] after we had said our farewells…, we went aboard… the ship, and they returned vvv vvv home.

[When] we had finished [our] voyage from Tyre, we landed at Ptolemais, [where] we greeted the brothers [and] stayed with them for a day.

Paul Visits Philip the Evangelist

- Leaving the next day, we went on to Caesarea and vvv stayed - at the home of Philip the evangelist, who was [one] of the Seven.

- [He] had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.

After we had been there several days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.

- Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his [own] feet and hands, [and] said, “- The Holy Spirit says: ‘In this way the Jews of Jerusalem will bind the owner of… this belt and hand [him] over… to [the] Gentiles.

- When we heard this, we and the [people] there pleaded with [Paul] not to go up to Jerusalem.
δὲ ὡς ἠκούσαμεν ταῦτα τε ἡμεῖς καὶ οἱ ἐντόπιοι παρεκαλοῦμεν αὐτὸν μὴ τοῦ ἀναβαίνειν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ de hōs ēkousamen tauta te hēmeis kai hoi entopioi parekaloumen auton mē tou anabainein eis Ierousalēm — NA/TR · 12

Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.

[When] he vvv would not be dissuaded, we quieted down [and] said, “The vvv Lord’s will be done.

- After these days, we packed up [and] went on to Jerusalem.

- [Some] of the disciples from Caesarea accompanied… us, [and] they took us vvv vvv to stay at the home of Mnason [the] Cypriot, an early disciple.

Paul’s Arrival at Jerusalem

- When we arrived in Jerusalem, the brothers welcomed us joyfully.

- The next [day] Paul went in with us to [see] James, and all the elders were present.
δὲ τῇ ἐπιούσῃ ὁ Παῦλος εἰσῄει σὺν ἡμῖν πρὸς Ἰάκωβον τε πάντες οἱ πρεσβύτεροι παρεγένοντο de tē epiousē ho Paulos eisēei syn hēmin pros Iakōbon te pantes hoi presbyteroi paregenonto — NA/TR · 18

- [Paul] greeted them [and] recounted one by one the things that God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry.
καὶ ἀσπασάμενος αὐτοὺς ἐξηγεῖτο ἓν καθ’ ἕκαστον ὧν ὁ Θεὸς ἐποίησεν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν διὰ αὐτοῦ τῆς διακονίας kai aspasamenos autous exēgeito hen kath’ hekaston hōn ho Theos epoiēsen en tois ethnesin dia autou tēs diakonias — NA/TR · 19

- When they heard [this], they glorified God. Then they said to [Paul], “You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous for the law.

But they are under the impression… that you teach all [the] Jews who [live] among the Gentiles to forsake… Moses, telling them not to circumcise [their] children [or] observe… [our] customs.
δὲ κατηχήθησαν περὶ ὅτι σοῦ διδάσκεις πάντας Ἰουδαίους τοὺς κατὰ τὰ ἔθνη ἀποστασίαν ἀπὸ Μωϋσέως λέγων αὐτοὺς μὴ περιτέμνειν τὰ τέκνα μηδὲ περιπατεῖν τοῖς ἔθεσιν de katēchēthēsan peri hoti sou didaskeis pantas Ioudaious tous kata ta ethnē apostasian apo Mōuseōs legōn autous mē peritemnein ta tekna mēde peripatein tois ethesin — NA/TR · 21

What then should [we do]? vvv They will certainly hear that you have come.

Therefore do vvv what we advise you. There are four men with us vvv vvv who have taken a vow.
οὖν ποίησον Τοῦτο ὅ λέγομεν σοι εἰσὶν τέσσαρες ἄνδρες ἡμῖν ἐφ’ ἑαυτῶν ἔχοντες εὐχὴν oun poiēson Touto ho legomen soi eisin tessares andres hēmin eph’ heautōn echontes euchēn — NA/TR · 23

Take these [men], purify yourself along with them, and pay their expenses… so {they can have} [their] heads shaved. Then everyone will know that there is no truth [to these] rumors about you, but [that] you also live in obedience to the law.
παραλαβὼν τούτους ἁγνίσθητι σὺν αὐτοῖς καὶ δαπάνησον ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς ἵνα τὴν κεφαλήν ξυρήσονται καὶ πάντες γνώσονται ὅτι ἐστιν οὐδέν ὧν κατήχηνται περὶ σοῦ ἀλλὰ αὐτὸς καὶ στοιχεῖς φυλάσσων τὸν νόμον paralabōn toutous hagnisthēti syn autois kai dapanēson ep’ autois hina tēn kephalēn xyrēsontai kai pantes gnōsontai hoti estin ouden hōn katēchēntai peri sou alla autos kai stoicheis phylassōn ton nomon — NA/TR · 24

- As for the Gentile believers, we have written [to them] our decision [that] they must abstain from [food] sacrificed to idols, [from] blood, [from] the meat of strangled animals, and [from] sexual immorality.
δὲ Περὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν πεπιστευκότων ἡμεῖς ἐπεστείλαμεν κρίναντες αὐτοὺς φυλάσσεσθαι τό τε εἰδωλόθυτον καὶ αἷμα καὶ πνικτὸν καὶ πορνείαν de Peri tōn ethnōn pepisteukotōn hēmeis epesteilamen krinantes autous phylassesthai to te eidōlothyton kai haima kai pnikton kai porneian — NA/TR · 25

[So] the next day Paul took the men [and] purified himself along with them. [Then] he entered… the temple to give notice of the date [when their] purification would be complete [and] the offering would be made for each… of them.

Paul Seized at the Temple

When the seven days were almost over, [some] Jews from [the province of] Asia saw [Paul] at the temple. They stirred up the whole crowd and seized… him,
Ὡς δὲ αἱ ἑπτὰ ἡμέραι ἔμελλον συντελεῖσθαι οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἀπὸ τῆς Ἀσίας θεασάμενοι αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ συνέχεον τὸν πάντα ὄχλον καὶ ἐπέβαλον τὰς χεῖρας ἐπ’ αὐτὸν Hōs de hai hepta hēmerai emellon synteleisthai hoi Ioudaioi apo tēs Asias theasamenoi auton en tō hierō synecheon ton panta ochlon kai epebalon tas cheiras ep’ auton — NA/TR · 27

crying out, “Men [of] Israel, help us! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against [our] people and [against our] law and [against] this place. Furthermore…, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place.

For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city, [and] they assumed that Paul had brought [him] into the temple.
γὰρ ἦσαν προεωρακότες Τρόφιμον τὸν Ἐφέσιον σὺν αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐνόμιζον ὅτι ὁ Παῦλος εἰσήγαγεν ὃν εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν gar ēsan proeōrakotes Trophimon ton Ephesion syn autō en tē polei enomizon hoti ho Paulos eisēgagen hon eis to hieron — NA/TR · 29

- The whole city was stirred up, and the people vvv rushed together. They seized Paul [and] dragged him out of the temple, and at once the gates were shut.

[While] they were trying to kill him, the commander of the [Roman] regiment received a report that all Jerusalem was in turmoil.
τε Ζητούντων ἀποκτεῖναι αὐτὸν τῷ χιλιάρχῳ τῆς σπείρης ἀνέβη φάσις ὅτι ὅλη Ἰερουσαλήμ συνχύννεται te Zētountōn apokteinai auton tō chiliarchō tēs speirēs anebē phasis hoti holē Ierousalēm synchynnetai — NA/TR · 31

- Immediately he took [some] soldiers and centurions [and] ran down to [the crowd]. - [When the people] saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.
ὃς ἐξαυτῆς παραλαβὼν στρατιώτας καὶ ἑκατοντάρχας κατέδραμεν ἐπ’ αὐτούς δὲ οἱ ἰδόντες τὸν χιλίαρχον καὶ τοὺς στρατιώτας ἐπαύσαντο τύπτοντες τὸν Παῦλον hos exautēs paralabōn stratiōtas kai hekatontarchas katedramen ep’ autous de hoi idontes ton chiliarchon kai tous stratiōtas epausanto typtontes ton Paulon — NA/TR · 32

- The commander came up [and] arrested [Paul], ordering that he be bound with two chains. Then he asked who he was and what vvv he had done.

[Some] in the crowd were shouting one thing, [and] [some] another. And [since] [the commander] vvv could not get at the truth because of the uproar, he ordered that [Paul] be brought into the barracks.

- When [Paul] reached… the steps, he had to be carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the mob.

For the crowd… that followed [him] kept shouting, “Away with him!

Paul Addresses the Crowd

[As] they were about to take Paul into the barracks, he asked the commander, “vvv May I say something to you? “Do you speak Greek? [he] replied.
τε Μέλλων εἰσάγεσθαι ὁ Παῦλος εἰς τὴν παρεμβολὴν λέγει τῷ χιλιάρχῳ Εἰ ἔξεστίν μοι εἰπεῖν τι πρὸς σέ γινώσκεις Ἑλληνιστὶ Ὁ δὲ ἔφη te Mellōn eisagesthai ho Paulos eis tēn parembolēn legei tō chiliarchō Ei exestin moi eipein ti pros se ginōskeis Hellēnisti Ho de ephē — NA/TR · 37

“- Aren’t… you the Egyptian who incited a rebellion some time ago… and led four thousand members of the Assassins into the wilderness?
ἄρα εἶ οὐκ σὺ ὁ Αἰγύπτιος ὁ ἀναστατώσας πρὸ τούτων τῶν ἡμερῶν καὶ ἐξαγαγὼν τοὺς τετρακισχιλίους ἄνδρας τῶν Σικαρίων εἰς τὴν ἔρημον ara ei ouk sy ho Aigyptios ho anastatōsas pro toutōn tōn hēmerōn kai exagagōn tous tetrakischilious andras tōn Sikariōn eis tēn erēmon — NA/TR · 38

But Paul answered, “I am a Jew… from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen [of] no ordinary city. Now I beg you to allow me to speak to the people.

- vvv Having received permission, Paul stood on the steps [and] motioned to the crowd -. A great hush came over [the crowd], [and] he addressed [them] in Hebrew…:
δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐπιτρέψαντος ὁ Παῦλος ἑστὼς ἐπὶ τῶν ἀναβαθμῶν κατέσεισεν τῷ λαῷ τῇ χειρὶ δὲ πολλῆς σιγῆς γενομένης προσεφώνησεν τῇ Ἑβραΐδι διαλέκτῳ λέγων de autou epitrepsantos ho Paulos hestōs epi tōn anabathmōn kateseisen tō laō tē cheiri de pollēs sigēs genomenēs prosephōnēsen tē Hebraidi dialektō legōn — NA/TR · 40
