Paul and Barnabas at Iconium
1
- At Iconium, [Paul and Barnabas] went as usual… into the vvv Jewish synagogue, [where] they spoke so [ well ] that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed.
δὲ Ἐγένετο ἐν Ἰκονίῳ αὐτοὺς εἰσελθεῖν κατὰ τὸ αὐτὸ εἰς τὴν τῶν Ἰουδαίων συναγωγὴν καὶ λαλῆσαι οὕτως ὥστε πολὺ πλῆθος τε Ἰουδαίων καὶ Ἑλλήνων πιστεῦσαι de Egeneto en Ikoniō autous eiselthein kata to auto eis tēn tōn Ioudaiōn synagōgēn kai lalēsai houtōs hōste poly plēthos te Ioudaiōn kai Hellēnōn pisteusai — NA/TR · 1

But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned [their] minds against the brothers.
δὲ οἱ ἀπειθήσαντες Ἰουδαῖοι ἐπήγειραν τῶν ἐθνῶν καὶ ἐκάκωσαν τὰς ψυχὰς κατὰ τῶν ἀδελφῶν de hoi apeithēsantes Ioudaioi epēgeiran tōn ethnōn kai ekakōsan tas psychas kata tōn adelphōn — NA/TR · 2

So [Paul and Barnabas] spent considerable time {there}, speaking boldly for the Lord, who affirmed… the message of His grace by enabling vvv vvv vvv them to perform signs and wonders.

- The people of the city were divided. - [Some] sided with the Jews, and [others] with the apostles.
δὲ τὸ πλῆθος τῆς πόλεως Ἐσχίσθη καὶ μὲν οἱ ἦσαν σὺν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις δὲ οἱ σὺν τοῖς ἀποστόλοις de to plēthos tēs poleōs Eschisthē kai men hoi ēsan syn tois Ioudaiois de hoi syn tois apostolois — NA/TR · 4

But when the Gentiles and Jews, together with their rulers, vvv set out to mistreat and stone them,
δὲ ὡς τῶν ἐθνῶν καὶ Ἰουδαίων τε σὺν αὐτῶν τοῖς ἄρχουσιν ἐγένετο ὁρμὴ ὑβρίσαι καὶ λιθοβολῆσαι αὐτούς de hōs tōn ethnōn kai Ioudaiōn te syn autōn tois archousin egeneto hormē hybrisai kai lithobolēsai autous — NA/TR · 5

they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding region,
συνιδόντες κατέφυγον εἰς τὰς τῆς Λυκαονίας πόλεις Λύστραν καὶ Δέρβην καὶ τὴν περίχωρον synidontes katephygon eis tas tēs Lykaonias poleis Lystran kai Derbēn kai tēn perichōron — NA/TR · 6

where they continued to preach the gospel.

The Visit to Lystra and Derbe

- In Lystra there sat a man crippled in [his] feet, who was lame from… birth [and] {had} never walked.
Καί ἐν Λύστροις ἐκάθητο τις ἀνὴρ ἀδύνατος τοῖς ποσὶν χωλὸς ἐκ μητρὸς αὐτοῦ κοιλίας ὃς οὐδέποτε περιεπάτησεν Kai en Lystrois ekathēto tis anēr adynatos tois posin chōlos ek mētros autou koilias hos oudepote periepatēsen — NA/TR · 8

This [man] was listening to the words of Paul, who looked intently at him and saw that he had faith to be healed.

In a loud voice [Paul] called out, “Stand up on your feet! And [the man] jumped up and began to walk.
μεγάλῃ φωνῇ εἶπεν Ἀνάστηθι ὀρθός ἐπὶ σου τοὺς πόδας καὶ ἥλατο καὶ περιεπάτει megalē phōnē eipen Anastēthi orthos epi sou tous podas kai hēlato kai periepatei — NA/TR · 10

[When] the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices in the Lycaonian language -: “The gods have come down to us in human form…!

- Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul [they called] Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.

- The priest of Zeus, [whose temple] was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the [city] gates, hoping to offer a sacrifice along with the crowds.
τε ὅ ἱερεὺς τοῦ Διὸς τοῦ ὄντος πρὸ τῆς πόλεως ἐνέγκας ταύρους καὶ στέμματα ἐπὶ τοὺς πυλῶνας ἤθελεν θύειν σὺν τοῖς ὄχλοις te ho hiereus tou Dios tou ontos pro tēs poleōs enenkas taurous kai stemmata epi tous pylōnas ēthelen thyein syn tois ochlois — NA/TR · 13

But [when] the apostles Barnabas and Paul found out about this, they tore their clothes [and] rushed into the crowd, shouting,
δὲ οἱ ἀπόστολοι Βαρνάβας καὶ Παῦλος Ἀκούσαντες διαρρήξαντες αὐτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια ἐξεπήδησαν εἰς τὸν ὄχλον κράζοντες de hoi apostoloi Barnabas kai Paulos Akousantes diarrēxantes autōn ta himatia exepēdēsan eis ton ochlon krazontes — NA/TR · 14

- “Men, why are you doing this? We too are [only] men, human like you. We are bringing you good news… that you should turn from these worthless things to [the] living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and vvv everything in them.
καὶ λέγοντες Ἄνδρες τί ποιεῖτε ταῦτα ἡμεῖς καὶ ἐσμεν ἄνθρωποι ὁμοιοπαθεῖς ὑμῖν εὐαγγελιζόμενοι ὑμᾶς ἐπιστρέφειν ἀπὸ τούτων τῶν ματαίων ἐπὶ ζῶντα θεὸν ὃς ἐποίησεν τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐτοῖς kai legontes Andres ti poieite tauta hēmeis kai esmen anthrōpoi homoiopatheis hymin euangelizomenoi hymas epistrephein apo toutōn tōn mataiōn epi zōnta theon hos epoiēsen ton ouranon kai tēn gēn kai tēn thalassan kai panta ta en autois — NA/TR · 15

In past generations, [He] let all nations go their [own] way.
ἐν ταῖς παρῳχημέναις γενεαῖς ὃς εἴασεν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη πορεύεσθαι αὐτῶν ταῖς ὁδοῖς en tais parōchēmenais geneais hos eiasen panta ta ethnē poreuesthai autōn tais hodois — NA/TR · 16

Yet vvv He has not left Himself without testimony to His goodness: He gives you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness.
καίτοι οὐκ ἀφῆκεν αὑτὸν ἀμάρτυρον ἀγαθουργῶν διδοὺς ὑμῖν ὑετοὺς οὐρανόθεν καὶ καρποφόρους καιροὺς ἐμπιπλῶν ὑμῶν τὰς καρδίας τροφῆς καὶ εὐφροσύνης kaitoi ouk aphēken hauton amartyron agathourgōn didous hymin hyetous ouranothen kai karpophorous kairous empiplōn hymōn tas kardias trophēs kai euphrosynēs — NA/TR · 17

Even with these words, vvv [Paul and Barnabas] could hardly stop the crowds from vvv sacrificing to them.

Then [some] Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and won over the crowds. They stoned Paul [and] dragged [him] outside the city, presuming he was dead.
δὲ Ἰουδαῖοι Ἐπῆλθαν ἀπὸ Ἀντιοχείας καὶ Ἰκονίου καὶ πείσαντες τοὺς ὄχλους καὶ λιθάσαντες τὸν Παῦλον ἔσυρον ἔξω τῆς πόλεως νομίζοντες αὐτὸν τεθνηκέναι de Ioudaioi Epēlthan apo Antiocheias kai Ikoniou kai peisantes tous ochlous kai lithasantes ton Paulon esyron exō tēs poleōs nomizontes auton tethnēkenai — NA/TR · 19

But [after] the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into… the city. And the next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.
δὲ τῶν μαθητῶν κυκλωσάντων αὐτὸν ἀναστὰς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν Καὶ τῇ ἐπαύριον ἐξῆλθεν σὺν τῷ Βαρνάβᾳ εἰς Δέρβην de tōn mathētōn kyklōsantōn auton anastas eisēlthen eis tēn polin Kai tē epaurion exēlthen syn tō Barnaba eis Derbēn — NA/TR · 20
Strengthening the Disciples

- They preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples… [Then] they returned to Lystra, - Iconium, and Antioch,
τε Εὐαγγελισάμενοί ἐκείνην τὴν πόλιν καὶ μαθητεύσαντες ἱκανοὺς ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς τὴν Λύστραν καὶ εἰς Ἰκόνιον καὶ εἰς Ἀντιόχειαν te Euangelisamenoi ekeinēn tēn polin kai mathēteusantes hikanous hypestrepsan eis tēn Lystran kai eis Ikonion kai eis Antiocheian — NA/TR · 21

strengthening the souls of the disciples [and] encouraging [them] to continue in the faith. “We must endure many hardships to enter… the kingdom of God, [they said].

- [Paul and Barnabas] appointed elders for them in each church, praying [and] fasting as they entrusted them to the Lord, in whom they had believed.

[After] passing through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.
Καὶ διελθόντες τὴν Πισιδίαν ἦλθον εἰς τὴν Παμφυλίαν Kai dielthontes tēn Pisidian ēlthon eis tēn Pamphylian — NA/TR · 24

And [when] they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.
καὶ λαλήσαντες τὸν λόγον ἐν Πέργῃ κατέβησαν εἰς Ἀττάλειαν kai lalēsantes ton logon en Pergē katebēsan eis Attaleian — NA/TR · 25

From [Attalia] they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had just completed.
Κἀκεῖθεν ἀπέπλευσαν εἰς Ἀντιόχειαν ὅθεν ἦσαν παραδεδομένοι τῇ χάριτι τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς τὸ ἔργον ὃ ἐπλήρωσαν Kakeithen apepleusan eis Antiocheian hothen ēsan paradedomenoi tē chariti tou Theou eis to ergon ho eplērōsan — NA/TR · 26

[When] they arrived, they gathered the church {together} [and] reported all that God had done through them, and how He had opened [the] door of faith to the Gentiles.
δὲ Παραγενόμενοι καὶ συναγαγόντες τὴν ἐκκλησίαν ἀνήγγελλον ὅσα ὁ Θεὸς ἐποίησεν μετ’ αὐτῶν καὶ ὅτι ἤνοιξεν θύραν πίστεως τοῖς ἔθνεσιν de Paragenomenoi kai synagagontes tēn ekklēsian anēngellon hosa ho Theos epoiēsen met’ autōn kai hoti ēnoixen thyran pisteōs tois ethnesin — NA/TR · 27

And they spent vvv a long time [there] with the disciples.
