Chapter 7

Jesus Teaches at the Feast

1

  • After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. vvv He did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jews [there] were trying to kill Him.

Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ὁ Ἰησοῦς περιεπάτει ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ γὰρ οὐ ἤθελεν περιπατεῖν ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ ὅτι οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐζήτουν ἀποκτεῖναι αὐτὸν Kai meta tauta ho Iēsous periepatei en tē Galilaia gar ou ēthelen peripatein en tē Ioudaia hoti hoi Ioudaioi ezētoun apokteinai auton — NA/TR · 1

However, the vvv Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.

So [Jesus’] brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples [there] may see [the] works You are doing.

οὖν αὐτοῦ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτὸν Μετάβηθι ἐντεῦθεν καὶ ὕπαγε εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν ἵνα σου οἱ μαθηταί καὶ θεωρήσουσιν σοῦ τὰ ἔργα ἃ ποιεῖς oun autou hoi adelphoi eipon pros auton Metabēthi enteuthen kai hypage eis tēn Ioudaian hina sou hoi mathētai kai theōrēsousin sou ta erga ha poieis — NA/TR · 3

For no one [who] wants to be [known] vvv publicly acts… in secret. Since You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.

For [even] His [own] brothers did {not} believe in Him.

Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time {has} not yet come.

The world vvv cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify… that its works are evil.

Go up to the feast on your own. I {am} not going up to this feast, because My time {has} not yet come.

ἀνάβητε εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν ὑμεῖς ἐγὼ οὐκ ἀναβαίνω εἰς ταύτην τὴν ἑορτὴν ὅτι ἐμὸς ὁ καιρὸς οὔπω πεπλήρωται anabēte eis tēn heortēn hymeis egō ouk anabainō eis tautēn tēn heortēn hoti emos ho kairos oupō peplērōtai — NA/TR · 8

  • Having said [this] -, [Jesus] remained in Galilee.

But [after] His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went— not publicly, but in secret.

δὲ Ὡς αὐτοῦ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ ἀνέβησαν εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν τότε αὐτὸς καὶ ἀνέβη οὐ φανερῶς ἀλλὰ ὡς ἐν κρυπτῷ de Hōs autou hoi adelphoi anebēsan eis tēn heortēn tote autos kai anebē ou phanerōs alla hōs en kryptō — NA/TR · 10

So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?

  • Many in the crowds were whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good [man]. But others replied, “No…, He deceives the people.

καὶ πολὺς ἐν τοῖς ὄχλοις ἦν γογγυσμὸς περὶ αὐτοῦ μὲν οἱ ἔλεγον ὅτι ἐστιν Ἀγαθός δὲ Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Οὔ ἀλλὰ πλανᾷ τὸν ὄχλον kai polys en tois ochlois ēn gongysmos peri autou men hoi elegon hoti estin Agathos de Alloi elegon Ou alla plana ton ochlon — NA/TR · 12

Yet no one would speak publicly about Him for fear of the Jews.

vvv vvv About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up to the temple [courts] and began to teach.

  • The Jews were amazed [and] asked, “How {did} this [man] attain [such] learning without having studied?

“My teaching is not My own, - Jesus replied… “[It comes] from Him who sent Me.

If anyone desires to do His will, he will know… whether [My] teaching is from God or [whether] I speak on My own.

ἐάν τις θέλῃ ποιεῖν αὐτοῦ τὸ θέλημα γνώσεται περὶ πότερον τῆς διδαχῆς ἐστιν ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἢ ἐγὼ λαλῶ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ ean tis thelē poiein autou to thelēma gnōsetai peri poteron tēs didachēs estin ek tou Theou ē egō lalō ap’ emautou — NA/TR · 17

He who speaks on his own [authority] seeks [his] own glory, but He who seeks the glory of the [One who] sent Him is a man of truth; in Him there is no falsehood.

{Has} not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps vvv [it]. Why are you trying to kill Me?

“You have a demon, the crowd replied. “Who is trying to kill You?

Jesus answered… them, “I did one miracle, and vvv you are all amazed.

[But] because… Moses gave you circumcision, you circumcise a boy on [the] Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.)

διὰ τοῦτο Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὴν περιτομήν καὶ περιτέμνετε ἄνθρωπον ἐν σαββάτῳ οὐχ ὅτι ἐστὶν ἐκ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἀλλ’ ἐκ τῶν πατέρων dia touto Mōusēs dedōken hymin tēn peritomēn kai peritemnete anthrōpon en sabbatō ouch hoti estin ek tou Mōuseōs all’ ek tōn paterōn — NA/TR · 22

If a boy vvv can be circumcised on [the] Sabbath so that the law of Moses {will} not be broken, [why] are you angry with Me for making [the] whole man well on the Sabbath?

εἰ ἄνθρωπος λαμβάνει περιτομὴν ἐν σαββάτῳ ἵνα ὁ νόμος Μωϋσέως μὴ λυθῇ χολᾶτε ἐμοὶ ὅτι ἐποίησα ὅλον ἄνθρωπον ὑγιῆ ἐν σαββάτῳ ei anthrōpos lambanei peritomēn en sabbatō hina ho nomos Mōuseōs mē lythē cholate emoi hoti epoiēsa holon anthrōpon hygiē en sabbatō — NA/TR · 23

Stop judging by outward appearances, [and start] judging justly…

μὴ κρίνετε κατ’ ὄψιν ἀλλὰ κρίνετε τὴν δικαίαν κρίσιν mē krinete kat’ opsin alla krinete tēn dikaian krisin — NA/TR · 24

Is Jesus the Christ?

Then some of the [people] of Jerusalem began to say, “Isn’t… this [the man] they are trying to kill?

οὖν τινες ἐκ τῶν Ἱεροσολυμιτῶν Ἔλεγον ἐστιν Οὐχ οὗτός ὃν ζητοῦσιν ἀποκτεῖναι oun tines ek tōn Hierosolymitōn Elegon estin Ouch houtos hon zētousin apokteinai — NA/TR · 25

Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying… [anything] to Him. {Have} the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ?

καὶ ἴδε λαλεῖ παρρησίᾳ καὶ λέγουσιν Μή‿ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ ποτε οἱ ἄρχοντες ἀληθῶς ἔγνωσαν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός kai ide lalei parrēsia kai legousin Mē ouden autō pote hoi archontes alēthōs egnōsan hoti houtos estin ho Christos — NA/TR · 26

But we know where this [man] is {from}. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is {from}.

Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple [courts], cried out…, “You know Me, and you know where I am {from}. vvv I have not come of My own accord, but He who sent Me is true. You {do} not know Him,

οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς διδάσκων ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ Ἔκραξεν καὶ λέγων οἴδατε Κἀμὲ καὶ οἴδατε πόθεν εἰμί καὶ οὐκ ἐλήλυθα ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ ἀλλ’ ὁ πέμψας με ἔστιν ἀληθινὸς ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε ὃν oun ho Iēsous didaskōn en tō hierō Ekraxen kai legōn oidate Kame kai oidate pothen eimi kai ouk elēlytha ap’ emautou all’ ho pempsas me estin alēthinos hymeis ouk oidate hon — NA/TR · 28

but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.

So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour {had} not yet come.

Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, vvv will He perform more signs than this [man] -?

[When] the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about [Jesus], - [they] and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.

οἱ Φαρισαῖοι Ἤκουσαν τοῦ ὄχλου γογγύζοντος ταῦτα περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἀπέστειλαν ὑπηρέτας ἵνα πιάσωσιν αὐτόν hoi Pharisaioi Ēkousan tou ochlou gongyzontos tauta peri autou kai hoi Pharisaioi kai hoi archiereis apesteilan hypēretas hina piasōsin auton — NA/TR · 32

So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the [One who] sent Me.

You will look for Me, [but] vvv you will not find Me; and where I am, you vvv cannot come.

At this, the Jews said to one another, “Where {does} He intend to go that we vvv will not find Him vvv? Will He go where the [Jews] are dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Εἶπον πρὸς ἑαυτούς Ποῦ οὗτος μέλλει πορεύεσθαι ὅτι ἡμεῖς οὐχ εὑρήσομεν αὐτόν μὴ μέλλει πορεύεσθαι εἰς τὴν Διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων καὶ διδάσκειν τοὺς Ἕλληνας oun hoi Ioudaioi Eipon pros heautous Pou houtos mellei poreuesthai hoti hēmeis ouch heurēsomen auton mē mellei poreuesthai eis tēn Diasporan tōn Hellēnōn kai didaskein tous Hellēnas — NA/TR · 35

What vvv vvv vvv does He mean by saying, ‘You will look for Me, [but] vvv you will not find Me, and, ‘Where I am, you vvv cannot come

τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὁ λόγος ὃν εἶπεν Ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ με καὶ Ὅπου ἐγὼ εἰμὶ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν tis estin houtos ho logos hon eipen Zētēsete me kai ouch heurēsete me kai Hopou egō eimi hymeis ou dynasthe elthein — NA/TR · 36

Living Water

  • On the last [and] greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice…, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.

δὲ Ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ τῇ μεγάλῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς ἑορτῆς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἱστήκει καὶ ἔκραξεν λέγων Ἐάν τις διψᾷ ἐρχέσθω πρός με καὶ πινέτω de En tē eschatē tē megalē hēmera tēs heortēs ho Iēsous heistēkei kai ekraxen legōn Ean tis dipsa erchesthō pros me kai pinetō — NA/TR · 37

Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from [within] him.

  • vvv He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For [the] Spirit had not yet [been given], because Jesus {had} not yet been glorified.

δὲ τοῦτο εἶπεν περὶ τοῦ Πνεύματος οὗ οἱ πιστεύσαντες εἰς αὐτόν ἔμελλον λαμβάνειν γὰρ Πνεῦμα ἦν οὔπω ὅτι Ἰησοῦς οὐδέπω ἐδοξάσθη de touto eipen peri tou Pneumatos hou hoi pisteusantes eis auton emellon lambanein gar Pneuma ēn oupō hoti Iēsous oudepō edoxasthē — NA/TR · 39

Division over Jesus

  • On hearing these words, [some] of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.

οὖν ἀκούσαντες τούτων τῶν λόγων Ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου ἔλεγον Οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς ὁ προφήτης oun akousantes toutōn tōn logōn Ek tou ochlou elegon Houtos estin alēthōs ho prophētēs — NA/TR · 40

Others declared, “This is the Christ. But still others asked, vvv “[How can] the Christ come from Galilee?

Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός δὲ Οἱ ἔλεγον Μὴ γὰρ ὁ Χριστὸς ἔρχεται ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας Alloi elegon Houtos estin ho Christos de Hoi elegon Mē gar ho Christos erchetai ek tēs Galilaias — NA/TR · 41

Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Christ will come from the line of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?

οὐχ ἡ γραφὴ εἶπεν ὅτι ὁ Χριστός ἔρχεται ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος Δαυὶδ καὶ ἀπὸ Βηθλεὲμ τῆς κώμης ὅπου Δαυὶδ ἦν ouch hē graphē eipen hoti ho Christos erchetai ek tou spermatos Dauid kai apo Bēthleem tēs kōmēs hopou Dauid ēn — NA/TR · 42

So there was division in the crowd because of [Jesus].

  • Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.

The Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, [who] asked them, “Why… vvv didn’t you bring Him {in}?

οὖν οἱ ὑπηρέται Ἦλθον πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ Φαρισαίους καὶ ἐκεῖνοι εἶπον αὐτοῖς Διὰ τί οὐκ ἠγάγετε αὐτόν oun hoi hypēretai Ēlthon pros tous archiereis kai Pharisaious kai ekeinoi eipon autois Dia ti ouk ēgagete auton — NA/TR · 45

“Never {has} anyone spoken like this man -! the officers answered.

“{Have} you vvv also been deceived? replied the Pharisees -.

“{Have} any of the rulers or - Pharisees believed in Him?

μή τις ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων ἢ ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ἐπίστευσεν εἰς αὐτὸν mē tis ek tōn archontōn ē ek tōn Pharisaiōn episteusen eis auton — NA/TR · 48

But this crowd that vvv does not know the law— they are under a curse.

Nicodemus, who had gone to [Jesus] earlier [and who himself] was one of them, asked -,

“{Does} our law vvv convict a man vvv without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?
