Chapter 21
Jesus Appears by the Sea of Tiberias
1
Later…, by the Sea of Tiberias, Jesus again revealed Himself to the disciples. He made [Himself] known in this way:

Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the [sons] of Zebedee, and two other - disciples were together.

Simon Peter told them, “I am going fishing. “We vvv will go with you, they said -. [So] they went out and got into the boat, [but] caught nothing that night.
Σίμων Πέτρος λέγει αὐτοῖς Ὑπάγω ἁλιεύειν ἡμεῖς καὶ Ἐρχόμεθα σὺν σοί Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ ἐξῆλθον καὶ ἐνέβησαν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ ἐπίασαν οὐδέν ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ νυκτὶ Simōn Petros legei autois Hypagō halieuein hēmeis kai Erchometha syn soi Legousin autō exēlthon kai enebēsan eis to ploion kai epiasan ouden en ekeinē tē nykti — NA/TR · 3
4
- Early in the morning…, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples {did} not recognize that it was Jesus.
5
So [He] called out to them, “Children, vvv do you have any fish? “No, they answered -.
6
- He told them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find [some]. So they cast [it there], and vvv they were unable to haul it in… because of the great number of fish.
δὲ Ὁ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Βάλετε τὸ δίκτυον εἰς τὰ δεξιὰ μέρη τοῦ πλοίου καὶ εὑρήσετε οὖν ἔβαλον καὶ οὐκέτι ἴσχυον ἑλκύσαι αὐτὸ ἀπὸ τοῦ πλήθους τῶν ἰχθύων de Ho eipen autois Balete to diktyon eis ta dexia merē tou ploiou kai heurēsete oun ebalon kai ouketi ischyon helkysai auto apo tou plēthous tōn ichthyōn — NA/TR · 6
7
Then [the] disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord! As soon as Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on [his] outer garment (for he had removed it…) and jumped… into the sea.

- The other disciples came [ashore] in the boat. They dragged in the net full of fish, for they were not far from land, only about a hundred yards…
δὲ οἱ ἄλλοι μαθηταὶ ἦλθον τῷ πλοιαρίῳ σύροντες τὸ δίκτυον τῶν ἰχθύων γὰρ ἦσαν οὐ μακρὰν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἀλλὰ ὡς διακοσίων πηχῶν ἀπὸ de hoi alloi mathētai ēlthon tō ploiariō syrontes to diktyon tōn ichthyōn gar ēsan ou makran apo tēs gēs alla hōs diakosiōn pēchōn apo — NA/TR · 8
9
- When they landed…, they saw a charcoal fire there [with] fish on it, and [some] bread.
10
- Jesus told them, “Bring [some] of the fish vvv you have just caught.

11
So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net vvv vvv ashore. [It was] full of large fish, 153 {}…, but even with so many, the net vvv was not torn.
οὖν Σίμων Πέτρος ἀνέβη καὶ εἵλκυσεν τὸ δίκτυον εἰς τὴν γῆν μεστὸν μεγάλων ἰχθύων ἑκατὸν πεντήκοντα τριῶν καὶ ὄντων τοσούτων τὸ δίκτυον οὐκ ἐσχίσθη oun Simōn Petros anebē kai heilkysen to diktyon eis tēn gēn meston megalōn ichthyōn hekaton pentēkonta triōn kai ontōn tosoutōn to diktyon ouk eschisthē — NA/TR · 11
12
“Come, have breakfast, Jesus said to them. None of the disciples dared to ask Him, “Who are You? They knew it was the Lord.
13
Jesus came and took the bread and gave [it] to them, and [He did] the same with the fish.

14
This [was] now the third time [that] Jesus appeared to the disciples after He was raised from [the] dead.

Jesus and Peter
15
vvv When they had finished eating, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon [son] of John, do you love Me more than these? “Yes, Lord, he answered…, “You know I love You. [Jesus] replied…, “Feed My lambs.
οὖν Ὅτε ἠρίστησαν ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγει Σίμωνι τῷ Πέτρῳ Σίμων Ἰωάννου ἀγαπᾷς με πλέον τούτων Ναί Κύριε Λέγει αὐτῷ σὺ οἶδας ὅτι φιλῶ σε Λέγει αὐτῷ Βόσκε μου τὰ ἀρνία oun Hote ēristēsan ho Iēsous legei Simōni tō Petrō Simōn Iōannou agapas me pleon toutōn Nai Kyrie Legei autō sy oidas hoti philō se Legei autō Boske mou ta arnia — NA/TR · 15
16
[Jesus] asked vvv a second time, “Simon [son] of John, do you love Me? “Yes, Lord, he answered…, “You know I love You. [Jesus] told him, “Shepherd My sheep.
Λέγει αὐτῷ πάλιν δεύτερον Σίμων Ἰωάννου ἀγαπᾷς με Ναί Κύριε Λέγει αὐτῷ σὺ οἶδας ὅτι φιλῶ σε Λέγει αὐτῷ Ποίμαινε μου τὰ πρόβατά Legei autō palin deuteron Simōn Iōannou agapas me Nai Kyrie Legei autō sy oidas hoti philō se Legei autō Poimaine mou ta probata — NA/TR · 16
17
[Jesus] asked a third time, “Simon [son] of John, do you love Me? Peter was deeply hurt that [Jesus] had asked him a third time, “Do you love Me? “Lord, You know all things, he replied -. “You know I love You. Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.
Λέγει αὐτῷ τὸ τρίτον Σίμων Ἰωάννου φιλεῖς με ὁ Πέτρος Ἐλυπήθη ὅτι εἶπεν αὐτῷ τὸ τρίτον Φιλεῖς με Κύριε σὺ οἶδας πάντα Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ σὺ γινώσκεις ὅτι φιλῶ σε ὁ Ἰησοῦς Λέγει αὐτῷ Βόσκε μου τὰ πρόβατά Legei autō to triton Simōn Iōannou phileis me ho Petros Elypēthē hoti eipen autō to triton Phileis me Kyrie sy oidas panta Kai eipen autō sy ginōskeis hoti philō se ho Iēsous Legei autō Boske mou ta probata — NA/TR · 17
18
Truly, truly, I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself and walked where you wanted; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead [you] where vvv you do not want to go.
19
- [Jesus] said this to indicate [the kind of] death by which [Peter] would glorify God. And [after] He had said this, He told him, “Follow Me.

Jesus and the Beloved Disciple
20
- Peter turned [and] saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following [them]. [He was the one] who had leaned back vvv vvv vvv [against Jesus] at the supper to ask, “Lord, who is going to… betray You?
ὁ Πέτρος Ἐπιστραφεὶς βλέπει τὸν μαθητὴν ὃν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἠγάπα ἀκολουθοῦντα καὶ ὃς ἀνέπεσεν ἐπὶ αὐτοῦ τὸ στῆθος ἐν τῷ δείπνῳ καὶ εἶπεν Κύριε τίς ἐστιν ὁ παραδιδούς σε ho Petros Epistrapheis blepei ton mathētēn hon ho Iēsous ēgapa akolouthounta kai hos anepesen epi autou to stēthos en tō deipnō kai eipen Kyrie tis estin ho paradidous se — NA/TR · 20

[When] [Peter] saw him, [he] asked…, “Lord, what about [him]?

22
- Jesus answered…, “If I want him to remain until I return, what [is that] to you? You follow Me!

23
Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple {would} not die. However, Jesus vvv did not say… that vvv he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I return, what [is that] to you?
οὖν οὗτος ὁ λόγος ἐξῆλθεν εἰς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὅτι ἐκεῖνος ὁ μαθητὴς οὐκ ἀποθνήσκει δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς οὐκ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὅτι οὐκ ἀποθνήσκει ἀλλ’ Ἐὰν θέλω αὐτὸν μένειν ἕως ἔρχομαι τί πρὸς σέ oun houtos ho logos exēlthen eis tous adelphous hoti ekeinos ho mathētēs ouk apothnēskei de ho Iēsous ouk eipen autō hoti ouk apothnēskei all’ Ean thelō auton menein heōs erchomai ti pros se — NA/TR · 23
24
This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who has written [them down]. And we know that his testimony is true.
25
- There are many more things… that Jesus did. If all of them… were written down, I suppose that not even the world itself would have space for the books that would be written.
