Chapter 2
The Wedding at Cana

- On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. - Jesus’ mother was there,
Καὶ τῇ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ γάμος ἐγένετο ἐν Κανὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἡ μήτηρ ἦν ἐκεῖ Kai tē tē tritē hēmera gamos egeneto en Kana tēs Galilaias kai tou Iēsou hē mētēr ēn ekei — NA/TR · 1

and Jesus and His disciples had also been invited… to the wedding.
δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ αὐτοῦ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐκλήθη καὶ εἰς τὸν γάμον de ho Iēsous kai autou hoi mathētai eklēthē kai eis ton gamon — NA/TR · 2

When [the] wine ran out, - Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They have no more wine.
καὶ οἴνου ὑστερήσαντος ἡ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ μήτηρ λέγει πρὸς αὐτόν ἔχουσιν οὐκ Οἶνον kai oinou hysterēsantos hē tou Iēsou mētēr legei pros auton echousin ouk Oinon — NA/TR · 3

“Woman, what [is that] to you and to Me? - Jesus replied -. “My hour {has} not yet come.
γύναι Τί σοί καὶ ἐμοὶ Καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγει αὐτῇ μου ἡ ὥρα οὔπω ἥκει gynai Ti soi kai emoi Kai ho Iēsous legei autē mou hē hōra oupō hēkei — NA/TR · 4

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever… He tells you.

Now six stone water jars had been set there for the Jewish [rites of] purification. [Each] could hold from twenty to thirty gallons…
δὲ ἓξ λίθιναι ὑδρίαι Ἦσαν κείμεναι ἐκεῖ κατὰ τῶν Ἰουδαίων τὸν καθαρισμὸν χωροῦσαι ἀνὰ δύο ἢ τρεῖς μετρητὰς de hex lithinai hydriai Ēsan keimenai ekei kata tōn Ioudaiōn ton katharismon chōrousai ana dyo ē treis metrētas — NA/TR · 6

Jesus told [the servants] -, “Fill the jars with water. So they filled them to [the] brim.

“Now draw [some] out, He said -, “and take [it] to the master of the banquet. - They [did so],

and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. vvv He did not know where it was {from}, but the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then [he] called the bridegroom [aside]
δὲ ὡς ὁ ἀρχιτρίκλινος ἐγεύσατο τὸ ὕδωρ γεγενημένον οἶνον καὶ οὐκ ᾔδει πόθεν ἐστίν δὲ οἱ διάκονοι οἱ ἠντληκότες τὸ ὕδωρ ᾔδεισαν ὁ ἀρχιτρίκλινος φωνεῖ τὸν νυμφίον de hōs ho architriklinos egeusato to hydōr gegenēmenon oinon kai ouk ēdei pothen estin de hoi diakonoi hoi ēntlēkotes to hydōr ēdeisan ho architriklinos phōnei ton nymphion — NA/TR · 9

and said -, “Everyone serves the fine wine first, and then the cheap [wine] after [the guests] are drunk. [But] you have saved the fine wine until now!
καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Πᾶς ἄνθρωπος τίθησιν τὸν καλὸν οἶνον πρῶτον καὶ τὸν ἐλάσσω ὅταν μεθυσθῶσιν σὺ τετήρηκας τὸν καλὸν οἶνον ἕως ἄρτι kai legei autō Pas anthrōpos tithēsin ton kalon oinon prōton kai ton elassō hotan methysthōsin sy tetērēkas ton kalon oinon heōs arti — NA/TR · 10

Jesus performed this, the first of His signs, at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

After this, He went down to Capernaum [with] His mother and - brothers and His disciples, and they stayed there vvv a few days.
Μετὰ τοῦτο κατέβη εἰς Καφαρναοὺμ αὐτὸς καὶ ἡ αὐτοῦ μήτηρ καὶ οἱ αὐτοῦ ἀδελφοὶ καὶ οἱ αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ καὶ ἔμειναν ἐκεῖ οὐ πολλὰς ἡμέρας Meta touto katebē eis Kapharnaoum autos kai hē autou mētēr kai hoi autou adelphoi kai hoi autou mathētai kai emeinan ekei ou pollas hēmeras — NA/TR · 12

When the vvv Jewish Passover was near, - Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Καὶ τὸ τῶν Ἰουδαίων πάσχα ἦν ἐγγὺς καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνέβη εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα Kai to tōn Ioudaiōn pascha ēn engys kai ho Iēsous anebē eis Hierosolyma — NA/TR · 13

- In the temple [courts] He found [men] selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and money changers seated [at their tables].
καὶ ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ εὗρεν τοὺς πωλοῦντας βόας καὶ πρόβατα καὶ περιστερὰς καὶ τοὺς κερματιστὰς καθημένους kai en tō hierō heuren tous pōlountas boas kai probata kai peristeras kai tous kermatistas kathēmenous — NA/TR · 14

[So] He made a whip out of cords [and] drove all from the temple [courts], both sheep and cattle. He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned [their] tables.
καὶ ποιήσας φραγέλλιον ἐκ σχοινίων ἐξέβαλεν πάντας ἐκ τοῦ ἱεροῦ τε τά πρόβατα καὶ τοὺς βόας καὶ ἐξέχεεν τὰ κέρματα τῶν κολλυβιστῶν καὶ ἀνέτρεψεν τὰς τραπέζας kai poiēsas phragellion ek schoiniōn exebalen pantas ek tou hierou te ta probata kai tous boas kai execheen ta kermata tōn kollybistōn kai anetrepsen tas trapezas — NA/TR · 15

- To those selling doves He said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn My Father’s house {into} a marketplace…!
καὶ τοῖς πωλοῦσιν τὰς περιστερὰς εἶπεν Ἄρατε ταῦτα ἐντεῦθεν μὴ ποιεῖτε μου τοῦ Πατρός τὸν οἶκον οἶκον ἐμπορίου kai tois pōlousin tas peristeras eipen Arate tauta enteuthen mē poieite mou tou Patros ton oikon oikon emporiou — NA/TR · 16

His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.”

On account of this, the Jews demanded…, “What sign can You show us to prove Your [ authority ] to do these things?
οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Τί σημεῖον δεικνύεις ἡμῖν ὅτι ποιεῖς ταῦτα oun hoi Ioudaioi Apekrithēsan kai eipan autō Ti sēmeion deiknyeis hēmin hoti poieis tauta — NA/TR · 18

Jesus answered…, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again…

“This temple {took} forty-six… years to build, the Jews replied, “and You are going to raise it up… in three days?
οὗτος ὁ ναὸς Τεσσεράκοντα καὶ ἓξ ἔτεσιν οἰκοδομήθη οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Εἶπαν καὶ σὺ ἐγερεῖς αὐτόν ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις houtos ho naos Tesserakonta kai hex etesin oikodomēthē oun hoi Ioudaioi Eipan kai sy egereis auton en trisin hēmerais — NA/TR · 20

But [Jesus] was speaking about the temple [of] His body.
δὲ Ἐκεῖνος ἔλεγεν περὶ τοῦ ναοῦ αὐτοῦ τοῦ σώματος de Ekeinos elegen peri tou naou autou tou sōmatos — NA/TR · 21

- After He was raised from [the] dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
οὖν ὅτε ἠγέρθη ἐκ νεκρῶν αὐτοῦ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐμνήσθησαν ὅτι ἔλεγεν τοῦτο καὶ ἐπίστευσαν τῇ γραφῇ καὶ τῷ λόγῳ ὃν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν oun hote ēgerthē ek nekrōn autou hoi mathētai emnēsthēsan hoti elegen touto kai episteusan tē graphē kai tō logō hon ho Iēsous eipen — NA/TR · 22

- While He was in Jerusalem at the Passover - Feast, many people saw [the] signs He was doing [and] believed in His name.
δὲ Ὡς ἦν ἐν τοῖς Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν τῷ πάσχα ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ πολλοὶ θεωροῦντες αὐτοῦ τὰ σημεῖα ἃ ἐποίει ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτοῦ τὸ ὄνομα de Hōs ēn en tois Hierosolymois en tō pascha en tē heortē polloi theōrountes autou ta sēmeia ha epoiei episteusan eis autou to onoma — NA/TR · 23

But Jesus… {did} not entrust Himself to them, for He knew [them] all.
δὲ Ἰησοῦς αὐτὸς οὐκ ἐπίστευεν αὑτὸν αὐτοῖς διὰ αὐτὸν τὸ γινώσκειν πάντας de Iēsous autos ouk episteuen hauton autois dia auton to ginōskein pantas — NA/TR · 24

- He {did} not need any testimony about man, for He knew what was in [a] man.
καὶ ὅτι εἶχεν οὐ χρείαν ἵνα τις μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου γὰρ αὐτὸς ἐγίνωσκεν τί ἦν ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ kai hoti eichen ou chreian hina tis martyrēsē peri tou anthrōpou gar autos eginōsken ti ēn en tō anthrōpō — NA/TR · 25
