Chapter 4
The Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus, full of [the] Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
δὲ Ἰησοῦς πλήρης Ἁγίου Πνεύματος ὑπέστρεψεν ἀπὸ τοῦ Ἰορδάνου καὶ ἤγετο ἐν τῷ Πνεύματι ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ de Iēsous plērēs Hagiou Pneumatos hypestrepsen apo tou Iordanou kai ēgeto en tō Pneumati en tē erēmō — NA/TR · 1

[where for] forty days He was tempted by the devil. He ate vvv nothing during those days, and [when] they had ended, He was hungry.

- The devil said to Him, “If You are [the] Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.

But Jesus answered -, “It is written -: ‘Man vvv shall not live on bread alone.’

Then [the devil] led Him up to a high place… [and] showed Him in an instant… all the kingdoms of the world.
Καὶ ἀναγαγὼν αὐτὸν ἔδειξεν αὐτῷ ἐν στιγμῇ χρόνου πάσας τὰς βασιλείας τῆς οἰκουμένης Kai anagagōn auton edeixen autō en stigmē chronou pasas tas basileias tēs oikoumenēs — NA/TR · 5

“I will give You authority over all [these kingdoms] and [all] their glory, - [he] said -. “For it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone… I wish.

So if You worship… me, vvv it will all be Yours.

But Jesus answered…, “It is written: ‘Worship [the] Lord your God and serve Him only.’
Καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Γέγραπται Προσκυνήσεις Κύριον σου τὸν Θεόν καὶ λατρεύσεις αὐτῷ μόνῳ Kai ho Iēsous apokritheis eipen autō Gegraptai Proskynēseis Kyrion sou ton Theon kai latreuseis autō monō — NA/TR · 8

Then [the devil] led Him to Jerusalem and set [Him] on the pinnacle of the temple. “If You are [the] Son of God, he said -, “throw Yourself down from here.

For it is written -: ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You carefully…,
γὰρ γέγραπται ὅτι ἐντελεῖται αὐτοῦ Τοῖς ἀγγέλοις περὶ σοῦ τοῦ διαφυλάξαι σε gar gegraptai hoti enteleitai autou Tois angelois peri sou tou diaphylaxai se — NA/TR · 10

and they will lift You [up] in [their] hands, so that {You will} not… strike Your foot against a stone.’
καὶ ἀροῦσίν σε ὅτι ἐπὶ χειρῶν μή‿ ποτε προσκόψῃς σου τὸν πόδα πρὸς λίθον kai arousin se hoti epi cheirōn mē pote proskopsēs sou ton poda pros lithon — NA/TR · 11

But Jesus answered…, “It [also] says, vvv ‘Do not put [the] Lord your God {to the test}.’

When the devil had finished every temptation, he left… Him until an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

- Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and [the] news about Him spread throughout… the surrounding region.
Καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὑπέστρεψεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν ἐν τῇ δυνάμει τοῦ Πνεύματος καὶ φήμη περὶ αὐτοῦ ἐξῆλθεν καθ’ ὅλης τῆς περιχώρου Kai ho Iēsous hypestrepsen eis tēn Galilaian en tē dynamei tou Pneumatos kai phēmē peri autou exēlthen kath’ holēs tēs perichōrou — NA/TR · 14

- He taught in their synagogues and was glorified by everyone.

The Rejection at Nazareth

Then [Jesus] came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered… the synagogue on the Sabbath… And [when] He stood up to read,
Καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Ναζαρά οὗ ἦν τεθραμμένος καὶ κατὰ αὐτῷ τὸ εἰωθὸς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν συναγωγήν ἐν τῇ τῶν σαββάτων ἡμέρᾳ καὶ ἀνέστη ἀναγνῶναι Kai ēlthen eis Nazara hou ēn tethrammenos kai kata autō to eiōthos eisēlthen eis tēn synagōgēn en tē tōn sabbatōn hēmera kai anestē anagnōnai — NA/TR · 16

- [the] scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling [it], He found the place where it was written:

“[The] Spirit of [the] Lord [is] on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to [the] poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to [the] captives and recovery of sight to [the] blind, to release… [the] oppressed,

to proclaim [the] year of [the] Lord’s favor.”

Then He rolled up the scroll, returned [it] to the attendant, [and] sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on Him,
Καὶ πτύξας τὸ βιβλίον ἀποδοὺς τῷ ὑπηρέτῃ ἐκάθισεν καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ πάντων ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ ἦσαν ἀτενίζοντες αὐτῷ Kai ptyxas to biblion apodous tō hypēretē ekathisen kai hoi ophthalmoi pantōn en tē synagōgē ēsan atenizontes autō — NA/TR · 20

and He began by saying - -, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.
δὲ ἤρξατο λέγειν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὅτι Σήμερον αὕτη ἡ γραφὴ πεπλήρωται ἐν ὑμῶν τοῖς ὠσὶν de ērxato legein pros autous hoti Sēmeron hautē hē graphē peplērōtai en hymōn tois ōsin — NA/TR · 21

- All spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that came from His lips. “Isn’t… this the son of Joseph? they asked.
Καὶ πάντες ἐμαρτύρουν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ἐπὶ τοῖς χάριτος τῆς λόγοις τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ἐκ αὐτοῦ τοῦ στόματος ἐστιν Οὐχὶ οὗτος υἱός Ἰωσὴφ καὶ ἔλεγον Kai pantes emartyroun autō kai ethaumazon epi tois charitos tēs logois tois ekporeuomenois ek autou tou stomatos estin Ouchi houtos huios Iōsēph kai elegon — NA/TR · 22

- [Jesus] said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Do here in Your hometown what we have heard [that] You did in Capernaum.
Καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Πάντως ἐρεῖτέ ταύτην τὴν παραβολὴν μοι Ἰατρέ θεράπευσον σεαυτόν ποίησον καὶ ὧδε ἐν σου τῇ πατρίδι ὅσα ἠκούσαμεν γενόμενα εἰς τὴν Καφαρναοὺμ Kai eipen pros autous Pantōs ereite tautēn tēn parabolēn moi Iatre therapeuson seauton poiēson kai hōde en sou tē patridi hosa ēkousamen genomena eis tēn Kapharnaoum — NA/TR · 23

Then He added, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

But I tell you vvv truthfully [that] there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three and a half… years [and] great famine swept over all the land.
δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐπ’ ἀληθείας ἦσαν πολλαὶ χῆραι ἐν τῷ Ἰσραήλ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις Ἠλίου ὅτε ὁ οὐρανὸς ἐκλείσθη ἐπὶ τρία καὶ ἕξ μῆνας ἔτη ὡς μέγας λιμὸς ἐγένετο ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν de legō hymin ep’ alētheias ēsan pollai chērai en tō Israēl en tais hēmerais Ēliou hote ho ouranos ekleisthē epi tria kai hex mēnas etē hōs megas limos egeneto epi pasan tēn gēn — NA/TR · 25

Yet Elijah was [not] sent to [any] of them, but… to vvv [the] widow of Zarephath in Sidon.
καὶ Ἠλίας ἐπέμφθη πρὸς οὐδεμίαν αὐτῶν εἰ μὴ πρὸς γυναῖκα χήραν εἰς Σάρεπτα τῆς Σιδωνίας kai Ēlias epemphthē pros oudemian autōn ei mē pros gynaika chēran eis Sarepta tēs Sidōnias — NA/TR · 26

And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet. Yet not one of them was cleansed— only… Naaman the Syrian.
καὶ ἦσαν πολλοὶ λεπροὶ ἐν τῷ Ἰσραὴλ ἐπὶ Ἐλισαίου τοῦ προφήτου καὶ οὐδεὶς αὐτῶν ἐκαθαρίσθη εἰ μὴ Ναιμὰν ὁ Σύρος kai ēsan polloi leproi en tō Israēl epi Elisaiou tou prophētou kai oudeis autōn ekatharisthē ei mē Naiman ho Syros — NA/TR · 27

- On hearing [this], all [the people] in the synagogue were enraged…
Καὶ ἀκούοντες ταῦτα πάντες ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ ἐπλήσθησαν θυμοῦ Kai akouontes tauta pantes en tē synagōgē eplēsthēsan thymou — NA/TR · 28

- They got up, drove Him out of [the] town, and led Him to [the] brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw Him over the cliff…
καὶ ἀναστάντες ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἤγαγον αὐτὸν ἕως ὀφρύος τοῦ ὄρους ἐφ’ οὗ αὐτῶν ἡ πόλις ᾠκοδόμητο ὥστε κατακρημνίσαι αὐτόν kai anastantes exebalon auton exō tēs poleōs kai ēgagon auton heōs ophryos tou orous eph’ hou autōn hē polis ōkodomēto hōste katakrēmnisai auton — NA/TR · 29

But [Jesus] passed through vvv [the crowd] [and] went on His way.

Jesus Expels an Unclean Spirit

Then He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath He began to teach [the people].
Καὶ κατῆλθεν εἰς Καφαρναοὺμ πόλιν τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἐν τοῖς σάββασιν ἦν διδάσκων αὐτοὺς Kai katēlthen eis Kapharnaoum polin tēs Galilaias kai en tois sabbasin ēn didaskōn autous — NA/TR · 31

- They were astonished at His teaching, because His message had… authority.
καὶ ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ αὐτοῦ τῇ διδαχῇ ὅτι αὐτοῦ λόγος ἦν ὁ ἐν ἐξουσίᾳ kai exeplēssonto epi autou tē didachē hoti autou logos ēn ho en exousia — NA/TR · 32

- In the synagogue there was a man possessed by [the] spirit of an unclean demon. He cried out in a loud voice,
Καὶ ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ ἦν ἄνθρωπος ἔχων πνεῦμα ἀκαθάρτου δαιμονίου καὶ ἀνέκραξεν μεγάλῃ φωνῇ Kai en tē synagōgē ēn anthrōpos echōn pneuma akathartou daimoniou kai anekraxen megalē phōnē — NA/TR · 33

“Ha! What do You [want] with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are— the Holy [One] of God!

[But] Jesus rebuked [the demon]. “Be silent! He said. “- Come out of him! At this, the demon threw [the man] down… before them all [and] came out - without harming him.

- All [the people] were overcome… with amazement and asked one another -, “What [is] this message? With authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!

And the news about [Jesus] spread throughout… the surrounding region.

Jesus Heals at Peter’s House

After [Jesus] had left… the synagogue, He went to the home of Simon, - [whose] mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. So they appealed to [Jesus] on her [behalf],
δὲ Ἀναστὰς ἀπὸ τῆς συναγωγῆς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν Σίμωνος δὲ τοῦ Σίμωνος πενθερὰ ἦν συνεχομένη μεγάλῳ πυρετῷ καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν περὶ αὐτῆς de Anastas apo tēs synagōgēs eisēlthen eis tēn oikian Simōnos de tou Simōnos penthera ēn synechomenē megalō pyretō kai ērōtēsan auton peri autēs — NA/TR · 38

and He stood over her [and] rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once [and] began to serve them.
καὶ ἐπιστὰς ἐπάνω αὐτῆς ἐπετίμησεν τῷ πυρετῷ καὶ ἀφῆκεν αὐτήν δὲ ἀναστᾶσα παραχρῆμα διηκόνει αὐτοῖς kai epistas epanō autēs epetimēsen tō pyretō kai aphēken autēn de anastasa parachrēma diēkonei autois — NA/TR · 39

- At sunset…, all… who were ill with various diseases were brought… to [Jesus], and laying [His] hands on each one -, He healed them.

- Demons also came out of many [people], shouting…, “You are the Son of God! But He rebuked [ the demons ] vvv [and] would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Christ.

Jesus Preaches in Judea

vvv vvv At daybreak, [Jesus] went out… to a solitary place, and the crowds were looking for Him. They came to Him and tried to keep Him [from] leaving…
δὲ Γενομένης ἡμέρας ἐξελθὼν ἐπορεύθη εἰς ἔρημον τόπον καὶ οἱ ὄχλοι ἐπεζήτουν αὐτόν καὶ ἦλθον ἕως αὐτοῦ καὶ κατεῖχον αὐτὸν μὴ τοῦ πορεύεσθαι ἀπ’ αὐτῶν de Genomenēs hēmeras exelthōn eporeuthē eis erēmon topon kai hoi ochloi epezētoun auton kai ēlthon heōs autou kai kateichon auton mē tou poreuesthai ap’ autōn — NA/TR · 42

But [Jesus] told them -, “I must preach [the] good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, because vvv that is why I was sent.

And He continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea.
