Chapter 23

Jesus before Pilate

Then the whole council… rose [and] led [Jesus] {away} to Pilate.

Καὶ τὸ ἅπαν πλῆθος αὐτῶν ἀναστὰν ἤγαγον αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Πιλᾶτον Kai to hapan plēthos autōn anastan ēgagon auton epi ton Pilaton — NA/TR · 1

And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this [man] subverting our nation, forbidding payment of taxes… to Caesar, and proclaiming Himself to be Christ, a King.

δὲ ἤρξαντο κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ λέγοντες εὕραμεν Τοῦτον διαστρέφοντα ἡμῶν τὸ ἔθνος καὶ κωλύοντα φόρους διδόναι Καίσαρι καὶ λέγοντα ἑαυτὸν εἶναι Χριστὸν βασιλέα de ērxanto katēgorein autou legontes heuramen Touton diastrephonta hēmōn to ethnos kai kōlyonta phorous didonai Kaisari kai legonta heauton einai Christon basilea — NA/TR · 2

So Pilate asked Him -, “Are You the King of the Jews? “You have said [so], - [Jesus] replied -.

Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.

But they kept insisting…, “He stirs up the people all over Judea [with His] teaching. He began in Galilee [and has come] all the way here.

δὲ Οἱ ἐπίσχυον λέγοντες ὅτι Ἀνασείει τὸν λαὸν ὅλης καθ’ τῆς Ἰουδαίας διδάσκων καὶ ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἕως ὧδε de Hoi epischyon legontes hoti Anaseiei ton laon holēs kath’ tēs Ioudaias didaskōn kai arxamenos apo tēs Galilaias heōs hōde — NA/TR · 5

Jesus before Herod

When Pilate heard [this], he asked if the man was a Galilean.

δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἀκούσας ἐπηρώτησεν εἰ ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐστιν Γαλιλαῖός de Pilatos akousas epērōtēsen ei ho anthrōpos estin Galilaios — NA/TR · 6

And learning that [Jesus] was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him… to Herod, [who] himself… was in Jerusalem at that time.

καὶ ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι ἐστὶν ἐκ Ἡρῴδου τῆς ἐξουσίας ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν πρὸς Ἡρῴδην αὐτὸν καὶ ὄντα ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν ταύταις ταῖς ἡμέραις kai epignous hoti estin ek Hērōdou tēs exousias anepempsen auton pros Hērōdēn auton kai onta en Hierosolymois en tautais tais hēmerais — NA/TR · 7

When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased. He had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had heard about Him and was hoping to see Him perform a miracle.

δὲ Ὁ Ἡρῴδης ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἦν λίαν ἐχάρη γὰρ θέλων ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν ἐξ ἱκανῶν χρόνων διὰ τὸ ἀκούειν περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤλπιζέν ἰδεῖν ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ γινόμενον τι σημεῖον de Ho Hērōdēs idōn ton Iēsoun ēn lian echarē gar thelōn idein auton ex hikanōn chronōn dia to akouein peri autou kai ēlpizen idein hyp’ autou ginomenon ti sēmeion — NA/TR · 8

  • [Herod] questioned [Jesus] at great [length], but He gave no answer…

δὲ ἐπηρώτα αὐτὸν ἐν ἱκανοῖς λόγοις δὲ αὐτὸς ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτῷ οὐδὲν de epērōta auton en hikanois logois de autos apekrinato autō ouden — NA/TR · 9

Meanwhile, the chief priests and scribes stood there, vehemently accusing Him.

δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς Εἱστήκεισαν εὐτόνως κατηγοροῦντες αὐτοῦ de hoi archiereis kai hoi grammateis Heistēkeisan eutonōs katēgorountes autou — NA/TR · 10

And even Herod and his soldiers ridiculed… and mocked [Him]. Dressing [Him] in a fine robe, they sent Him back… to Pilate.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

Then Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,

δὲ Πιλᾶτος συνκαλεσάμενος τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τὸν λαὸν de Pilatos synkalesamenos tous archiereis kai tous archontas kai ton laon — NA/TR · 13

[and] said to them, “You brought me this man as [one who] was inciting the people {to rebellion}. I have examined [Him] here in your presence… [and] found vvv vvv [Him] not guilty of your charges against Him.

εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Προσηνέγκατέ μοι τοῦτον τὸν ἄνθρωπον ὡς ἀποστρέφοντα τὸν λαόν καὶ ἐγὼ ἀνακρίνας ἰδοὺ ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν εὗρον ἐν τούτῳ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ οὐθὲν αἴτιον ὧν κατηγορεῖτε κατ’ αὐτοῦ eipen pros autous Prosēnenkate moi touton ton anthrōpon hōs apostrephonta ton laon kai egō anakrinas idou enōpion hymōn heuron en toutō tō anthrōpō outhen aition hōn katēgoreite kat’ autou — NA/TR · 14

  • Neither [has] Herod, for he sent Him back… to us. As you can see, He has done nothing deserving of death.

ἀλλ’ οὐδὲ Ἡρῴδης γὰρ ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν πρὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτῷ ἐστὶν πεπραγμένον οὐδὲν ἄξιον θανάτου all’ oude Hērōdēs gar anepempsen auton pros hēmas kai idou autō estin pepragmenon ouden axion thanatou — NA/TR · 15

Therefore I will punish Him [and] release [Him].”

But they all cried out in unison…: “Away with this [man]! Release Barabbas to us!

([Barabbas]… had been imprisoned… for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)

  • Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed them again,

but they kept shouting…, “Crucify [Him]! Crucify Him!

δὲ οἱ ἐπεφώνουν λέγοντες Σταύρου σταύρου αὐτόν de hoi epephōnoun legontes Staurou staurou auton — NA/TR · 21

  • A third [time] he said to them -, “What evil {has} this [man] done? I have found in Him no offense worthy of death. So after I punish Him, I will release [Him].

δὲ Ὁ τρίτον εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς γὰρ Τί κακὸν οὗτος ἐποίησεν εὗρον ἐν αὐτῷ οὐδὲν αἴτιον θανάτου οὖν παιδεύσας αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω de Ho triton eipen pros autous gar Ti kakon houtos epoiēsen heuron en autō ouden aition thanatou oun paideusas auton apolysō — NA/TR · 22

But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices… for [Jesus] to be crucified. And their clamor prevailed.

So Pilate sentenced [that] their demand be met.

As they had requested, he released the [one] imprisoned… for insurrection and murder, and he handed Jesus over to their will.

The Crucifixion

  • As [the soldiers] led Him away…, they seized Simon of Cyrene on his way in from the country, [and] they put the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.

Καὶ ὡς ἀπήγαγον αὐτόν ἐπιλαβόμενοι Σίμωνά τινα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπ’ ἀγροῦ ἐπέθηκαν τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτῷ φέρειν ὄπισθεν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ Kai hōs apēgagon auton epilabomenoi Simōna tina Kyrēnaion erchomenon ap’ agrou epethēkan ton stauron autō pherein opisthen tou Iēsou — NA/TR · 26

  • A great number of people followed Him, including women who kept mourning and wailing for Him.

δὲ πολὺ πλῆθος τοῦ λαοῦ Ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ καὶ γυναικῶν αἳ ἐκόπτοντο καὶ ἐθρήνουν αὐτόν de poly plēthos tou laou Ēkolouthei autō kai gynaikōn hai ekoptonto kai ethrēnoun auton — NA/TR · 27

But Jesus turned to them [and] said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, {do} not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.

δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς στραφεὶς πρὸς αὐτὰς εἶπεν Θυγατέρες Ἰερουσαλήμ μὴ κλαίετε ἐπ’ ἐμέ πλὴν κλαίετε ἐφ’ ἑαυτὰς καὶ ἐπὶ ὑμῶν τὰ τέκνα de ho Iēsous strapheis pros autas eipen Thygateres Ierousalēm mē klaiete ep’ eme plēn klaiete eph’ heautas kai epi hymōn ta tekna — NA/TR · 28

  • Look, [the] days are coming vvv when [people] will say, ‘Blessed [are] the barren [women], the wombs that never bore, and breasts that never nursed!

ὅτι ἰδοὺ ἡμέραι ἔρχονται ἐν αἷς ἐροῦσιν Μακάριαι αἱ στεῖραι καὶ αἱ κοιλίαι αἳ οὐκ ἐγέννησαν καὶ μαστοὶ οἳ οὐκ ἔθρεψαν hoti idou hēmerai erchontai en hais erousin Makariai hai steirai kai hai koiliai hai ouk egennēsan kai mastoi hoi ouk ethrepsan — NA/TR · 29

At that time ‘vvv they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us! and to the hills, “Cover us!”’

For if [men] do these things [while] the tree [is] green, what will happen [when] [it is] dry?

  • Two others, [who were] criminals, vvv were also led away to be executed with [Jesus].

δὲ δύο ἕτεροι κακοῦργοι καὶ Ἤγοντο ἀναιρεθῆναι σὺν αὐτῷ de dyo heteroi kakourgoi kai Ēgonto anairethēnai syn autō — NA/TR · 32

  • When they came to the place called The Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals, one on [His] right and [the other] on [His] left.

Καὶ ὅτε ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τὸν καλούμενον Κρανίον ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ καὶ τοὺς κακούργους ὃν μὲν ἐκ δεξιῶν δὲ ὃν ἐξ ἀριστερῶν Kai hote ēlthon epi ton topon ton kaloumenon Kranion estaurōsan auton ekei kai tous kakourgous hon men ek dexiōn de hon ex aristerōn — NA/TR · 33

Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for vvv they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up His garments by casting lots.

  • The people stood watching, and the rulers sneered at [Him], saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if [He] is the Christ of God, the Chosen [One].”

  • The soldiers also mocked Him [and] came up to offer Him sour wine.

δὲ οἱ στρατιῶται καὶ Ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῷ προσερχόμενοι προσφέροντες αὐτῷ ὄξος de hoi stratiōtai kai Enepaixan autō proserchomenoi prospherontes autō oxos — NA/TR · 36

“If You are the King of the Jews, they said, “save Yourself!

  • Above Him was [posted] an inscription: THIS [IS] THE KING OF THE JEWS.

  • One of the criminals who hung [there] heaped abuse on Him. vvv “Are You not the Christ? he said. “Save Yourself and us!

δὲ Εἷς τῶν κακούργων κρεμασθέντων ἐβλασφήμει αὐτόν εἶ σὺ Οὐχὶ ὁ Χριστός λέγων σῶσον σεαυτὸν καὶ ἡμᾶς de Heis tōn kakourgōn kremasthentōn eblasphēmei auton ei sy Ouchi ho Christos legōn sōson seauton kai hēmas — NA/TR · 39

But the other [one] vvv rebuked him, saying, “{Do} you not even fear God, since you are under the same judgment?

  • We [ are punished ] justly, for we are receiving what our actions deserve. But [this] man has done nothing wrong.

καὶ ἡμεῖς μὲν δικαίως γὰρ ἀπολαμβάνομεν ὧν ἐπράξαμεν ἄξια δὲ οὗτος ἔπραξεν οὐδὲν ἄτοπον kai hēmeis men dikaiōs gar apolambanomen hōn epraxamen axia de houtos epraxen ouden atopon — NA/TR · 41

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!

καὶ ἔλεγεν Ἰησοῦ μνήσθητί μου ὅταν ἔλθῃς εἰς σου τὴν βασιλείαν kai elegen Iēsou mnēsthēti mou hotan elthēs eis sou tēn basileian — NA/TR · 42

And [Jesus] said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.

Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀμήν λέγω σοι σήμερον ἔσῃ μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐν τῷ Παραδείσῳ Kai eipen autō Amēn legō soi sēmeron esē met’ emou en tō Paradeisō — NA/TR · 43

The Death of Jesus

  • vvv It was now about [the] sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land until [the] ninth hour.

Καὶ ἤδη ἦν ὡσεὶ ἕκτη ὥρα καὶ σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφ’ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ἐνάτης ὥρας Kai ēdē ēn hōsei hektē hōra kai skotos egeneto eph’ holēn tēn gēn heōs enatēs hōras — NA/TR · 44

The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn down [the] middle.

τοῦ ἡλίου ἐκλιπόντος δὲ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη μέσον tou hēliou eklipontos de to katapetasma tou naou eschisthē meson — NA/TR · 45

Then Jesus called out vvv in a loud voice…, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last.

When the centurion saw what had happened, he gave glory to God, saying, “Surely this was [a] righteous man.

And [when] all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned [home] beating [their] breasts.

καὶ πάντες οἱ ὄχλοι συμπαραγενόμενοι ἐπὶ ταύτην τὴν θεωρίαν θεωρήσαντες τὰ γενόμενα ὑπέστρεφον τύπτοντες τὰ στήθη kai pantes hoi ochloi symparagenomenoi epi tautēn tēn theōrian theōrēsantes ta genomena hypestrephon typtontes ta stēthē — NA/TR · 48

But all… those who knew [Jesus], including [the] women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching these things.

The Burial of Jesus

Now [there was] vvv vvv vvv a Council member named Joseph, a good and righteous man,

Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ὑπάρχων καὶ βουλευτὴς ὀνόματι Ἰωσὴφ ἀγαθὸς καὶ δίκαιος ἀνὴρ Kai idou anēr hyparchōn kai bouleutēs onomati Iōsēph agathos kai dikaios anēr — NA/TR · 50

[who] vvv vvv had not consented to their decision [or] action. [He was] from [the] Judean town… [of] Arimathea [and] was waiting for the kingdom of God.

οὗτος ἦν οὐκ συνκατατεθειμένος τῇ αὐτῶν βουλῇ καὶ τῇ πράξει ἀπὸ πόλεως τῶν Ἰουδαίων Ἁριμαθαίας ὃς προσεδέχετο τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ houtos ēn ouk synkatatetheimenos tē autōn boulē kai tē praxei apo poleōs tōn Ioudaiōn Harimathaias hos prosedecheto tēn basileian tou Theou — NA/TR · 51

He went to Pilate to ask [for] the body of Jesus.
