Chapter 21
The Poor Widow’s Offering
1
Then [Jesus] looked up [and] saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury,
δὲ Ἀναβλέψας εἶδεν τοὺς πλουσίους βάλλοντας τὰ αὐτῶν δῶρα εἰς τὸ γαζοφυλάκιον de Anablepsas eiden tous plousious ballontas ta autōn dōra eis to gazophylakion — NA/TR · 1

and He saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.
δέ εἶδεν τινα πενιχρὰν χήραν βάλλουσαν ἐκεῖ δύο λεπτὰ de eiden tina penichran chēran ballousan ekei dyo lepta — NA/TR · 2

“Truly I tell you, He said, “this poor widow has put in more than all [the others].
Ἀληθῶς λέγω ὑμῖν Καὶ εἶπεν ὅτι αὕτη ἡ πτωχὴ ἡ χήρα ἔβαλεν πλεῖον πάντων Alēthōs legō hymin Kai eipen hoti hautē hē ptōchē hē chēra ebalen pleion pantōn — NA/TR · 3

For they all… contributed… out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all - she had to live on.

Temple Destruction and Other Signs

As some [of the disciples] were remarking… how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and consecrated gifts, [Jesus] said,
Καί τινων λεγόντων περὶ ὅτι τοῦ ἱεροῦ κεκόσμηται καλοῖς λίθοις καὶ ἀναθήμασιν εἶπεν Kai tinōn legontōn peri hoti tou hierou kekosmētai kalois lithois kai anathēmasin eipen — NA/TR · 5

“[As for] what you see here, [the] time will come vvv [when] not one stone will be left on [another]; [every one]… will be thrown down.

“Teacher, they asked…, “when {will}… these things happen? And what [will be] the sign [that] they are about to take place?

- [Jesus] answered, “See to it vvv that you are not deceived. For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am [He], and, ‘The time is near. {Do} not follow… them.
δὲ Ὁ εἶπεν Βλέπετε μὴ πλανηθῆτε γὰρ πολλοὶ ἐλεύσονται ἐπὶ μου τῷ ὀνόματί λέγοντες Ἐγώ εἰμι καί Ὁ καιρὸς ἤγγικεν μὴ πορευθῆτε ὀπίσω αὐτῶν de Ho eipen Blepete mē planēthēte gar polloi eleusontai epi mou tō onomati legontes Egō eimi kai Ho kairos ēngiken mē poreuthēte opisō autōn — NA/TR · 8

- When you hear of wars and rebellions, {do} not be alarmed. These things must happen first, but the end [is] not imminent.
δὲ ὅταν ἀκούσητε πολέμους καὶ ἀκαταστασίας μὴ πτοηθῆτε γὰρ ταῦτα δεῖ γενέσθαι πρῶτον ἀλλ’ τὸ τέλος οὐκ εὐθέως de hotan akousēte polemous kai akatastasias mē ptoēthēte gar tauta dei genesthai prōton all’ to telos ouk eutheōs — NA/TR · 9
Witnessing to All Nations

Then He told them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
Τότε ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς ἔθνος Ἐγερθήσεται ἐπ’ ἔθνος καὶ βασιλεία ἐπὶ βασιλείαν Tote elegen autois ethnos Egerthēsetai ep’ ethnos kai basileia epi basileian — NA/TR · 10

There will be great earthquakes, famines, and pestilences in various places, along with fearful sights and great signs from heaven.
ἔσονται τε μεγάλοι σεισμοί καὶ λιμοὶ καὶ λοιμοὶ κατὰ τόπους τε ἔσται φόβητρά καὶ μεγάλα σημεῖα ἀπ’ οὐρανοῦ esontai te megaloi seismoi kai limoi kai loimoi kata topous te estai phobētra kai megala sēmeia ap’ ouranou — NA/TR · 11

But before all [this], they will seize… you and persecute [you]. On account of My name they will deliver you to the synagogues and prisons, [and] they will bring [you] before kings and governors.
δὲ Πρὸ πάντων τούτων ἐπιβαλοῦσιν αὐτῶν τὰς χεῖρας ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς καὶ διώξουσιν ἕνεκεν μου τοῦ ὀνόματός παραδιδόντες εἰς τὰς συναγωγὰς καὶ φυλακάς ἀπαγομένους ἐπὶ βασιλεῖς καὶ ἡγεμόνας de Pro pantōn toutōn epibalousin autōn tas cheiras eph’ hymas kai diōxousin heneken mou tou onomatos paradidontes eis tas synagōgas kai phylakas apagomenous epi basileis kai hēgemonas — NA/TR · 12

This will be your opportunity… to serve as witnesses.
ἀποβήσεται ὑμῖν εἰς μαρτύριον apobēsetai hymin eis martyrion — NA/TR · 13

So make up your mind not to worry beforehand how to defend yourselves.
οὖν θέτε ἐν ὑμῶν ταῖς καρδίαις μὴ προμελετᾶν ἀπολογηθῆναι oun thete en hymōn tais kardiais mē promeletan apologēthēnai — NA/TR · 14

For I will give you speech and wisdom that none of… vvv your adversaries… will be able to resist [or] contradict.
γὰρ ἐγὼ δώσω ὑμῖν στόμα καὶ σοφίαν ᾗ οὐ ἅπαντες οἱ ἀντικείμενοι ὑμῖν δυνήσονται ἀντιστῆναι ἢ ἀντειπεῖν gar egō dōsō hymin stoma kai sophian hē ou hapantes hoi antikeimenoi hymin dynēsontai antistēnai ē anteipein — NA/TR · 15

- You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and [some] of you will be put to death.
δὲ Παραδοθήσεσθε καὶ ὑπὸ γονέων καὶ ἀδελφῶν καὶ συγγενῶν καὶ φίλων καὶ ἐξ ὑμῶν θανατώσουσιν de Paradothēsesthe kai hypo goneōn kai adelphōn kai syngenōn kai philōn kai ex hymōn thanatōsousin — NA/TR · 16

And you will be hated by everyone because of My name.
καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ μου τὸ ὄνομά kai esesthe misoumenoi hypo pantōn dia mou to onoma — NA/TR · 17

Yet vvv not even a hair of your head will perish.
καὶ οὐ μὴ θρὶξ ἐκ ὑμῶν τῆς κεφαλῆς ἀπόληται kai ou mē thrix ek hymōn tēs kephalēs apolētai — NA/TR · 18

By your patient endurance you will gain your souls.
ἐν ὑμῶν τῇ ὑπομονῇ κτήσασθε ὑμῶν τὰς ψυχὰς en hymōn tē hypomonē ktēsasthe hymōn tas psychas — NA/TR · 19
The Destruction of Jerusalem
20
But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, you will know that her desolation is near.
δὲ Ὅταν ἴδητε Ἰερουσαλήμ κυκλουμένην ὑπὸ στρατοπέδων τότε γνῶτε ὅτι αὐτῆς ἡ ἐρήμωσις ἤγγικεν de Hotan idēte Ierousalēm kykloumenēn hypo stratopedōn tote gnōte hoti autēs hē erēmōsis ēngiken — NA/TR · 20

Then {let} those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, {let} those in vvv [the city] get out, and {let} those in the country vvv stay out of vvv [the city].
τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τὰ ὄρη καὶ οἱ ἐν αὐτῆς μέσῳ ἐκχωρείτωσαν καὶ οἱ ἐν ταῖς χώραις μὴ εἰσερχέσθωσαν εἰς αὐτήν tote hoi en tē Ioudaia pheugetōsan eis ta orē kai hoi en autēs mesō ekchōreitōsan kai hoi en tais chōrais mē eiserchesthōsan eis autēn — NA/TR · 21

For these are [the] days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written.

How miserable those days [will be] [for] pregnant… and nursing [mothers]! For there will be great distress upon the land and wrath against this people.
Οὐαὶ ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις ταῖς ἐχούσαις ἐν γαστρὶ καὶ ταῖς θηλαζούσαις γὰρ ἔσται μεγάλη ἀνάγκη ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ὀργὴ τῷ τούτῳ λαῷ Ouai en ekeinais tais hēmerais tais echousais en gastri kai tais thēlazousais gar estai megalē anankē epi tēs gēs kai orgē tō toutō laō — NA/TR · 23

- They will fall by [the] edge of [the] sword and be led captive into all the nations. And Jerusalem will be trodden down by [the] Gentiles, until… [the] times of [the] Gentiles are fulfilled.
καὶ πεσοῦνται στόματι μαχαίρης καὶ αἰχμαλωτισθήσονται εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔθνη καὶ Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἔσται πατουμένη ὑπὸ ἐθνῶν ἄχρι οὗ καιροὶ ἐθνῶν πληρωθῶσιν kai pesountai stomati machairēs kai aichmalōtisthēsontai eis panta ta ethnē kai Ierousalēm estai patoumenē hypo ethnōn achri hou kairoi ethnōn plērōthōsin — NA/TR · 24
The Return of the Son of Man

- There will be signs in [the] sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among the nations, bewildered by [the] roaring of [the] sea and [the] surging of the waves.
Καὶ ἔσονται σημεῖα ἐν ἡλίῳ καὶ σελήνῃ καὶ ἄστροις καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς συνοχὴ ἐθνῶν ἀπορίᾳ ἐν ἤχους θαλάσσης καὶ σάλου Kai esontai sēmeia en hēliō kai selēnē kai astrois kai epi tēs gēs synochē ethnōn aporia en ēchous thalassēs kai salou — NA/TR · 25

Men will faint from fear and anxiety over what is coming upon the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
ἀνθρώπων ἀποψυχόντων ἀπὸ φόβου καὶ προσδοκίας τῶν ἐπερχομένων τῇ οἰκουμένῃ γὰρ αἱ δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται anthrōpōn apopsychontōn apo phobou kai prosdokias tōn eperchomenōn tē oikoumenē gar hai dynameis tōn ouranōn saleuthēsontai — NA/TR · 26

vvv At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

When these things begin to happen, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.
δὲ τούτων ἀρχομένων γίνεσθαι ἀνακύψατε καὶ ἐπάρατε ὑμῶν τὰς κεφαλὰς διότι ὑμῶν ἡ ἀπολύτρωσις ἐγγίζει de toutōn archomenōn ginesthai anakypsate kai eparate hymōn tas kephalas dioti hymōn hē apolytrōsis engizei — NA/TR · 28
The Lesson of the Fig Tree

Then [Jesus] told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees.
Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς παραβολὴν Ἴδετε τὴν συκῆν καὶ πάντα τὰ δένδρα Kai eipen autois parabolēn Idete tēn sykēn kai panta ta dendra — NA/TR · 29

When they sprout leaves…, you can see for yourselves [and] know that summer is… near.
ὅταν προβάλωσιν ἤδη βλέποντες ἀφ’ ἑαυτῶν γινώσκετε ὅτι τὸ θέρος ἐστίν ἤδη ἐγγὺς hotan probalōsin ēdē blepontes aph’ heautōn ginōskete hoti to theros estin ēdē engys — NA/TR · 30

So also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.
οὕτως καὶ ὅταν ἴδητε ταῦτα γινόμενα ὑμεῖς γινώσκετε ὅτι ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστιν ἐγγύς houtōs kai hotan idēte tauta ginomena hymeis ginōskete hoti hē basileia tou Theou estin engys — NA/TR · 31

Truly I tell you, this generation vvv vvv will not pass away until… all [these things] have happened.

- Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words vvv vvv will never pass away.
ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ παρελεύσονται δὲ μου οἱ λόγοι οὐ μὴ παρελεύσονται ho ouranos kai hē gē pareleusontai de mou hoi logoi ou mē pareleusontai — NA/TR · 33
Be Watchful for the Day

But watch yourselves, or… your hearts vvv will be weighed down by dissipation, drunkenness, and [the] worries of life— and that day will spring upon you suddenly like a snare.
δὲ Προσέχετε ἑαυτοῖς μή‿ αἱ ὑμῶν καρδίαι ποτε βαρηθῶσιν ἐν κραιπάλῃ καὶ μέθῃ καὶ μερίμναις βιωτικαῖς καὶ ἐκείνη ἡ ἡμέρα ἐπιστῇ ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς αἰφνίδιος ὡς παγίς de Prosechete heautois mē hai hymōn kardiai pote barēthōsin en kraipalē kai methē kai merimnais biōtikais kai ekeinē hē hēmera epistē eph’ hymas aiphnidios hōs pagis — NA/TR · 34

For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of all the earth.
γὰρ ἐπεισελεύσεται ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς καθημένους ἐπὶ πρόσωπον πάσης τῆς γῆς gar epeiseleusetai epi pantas tous kathēmenous epi prosōpon pasēs tēs gēs — NA/TR · 35

[So] keep watch at all times, [and] pray that you may have the strength to escape all that is about to happen and to stand before the Son of Man.
δὲ ἀγρυπνεῖτε ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ δεόμενοι ἵνα κατισχύσητε ἐκφυγεῖν πάντα ταῦτα τὰ μέλλοντα γίνεσθαι καὶ σταθῆναι ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου de agrypneite en panti kairō deomenoi hina katischysēte ekphygein panta tauta ta mellonta ginesthai kai stathēnai emprosthen tou Huiou tou anthrōpou — NA/TR · 36

- [Every] day [Jesus] taught at the temple, but [every] evening He went out to spend the night on the Mount of Olives.

And early in the morning - all the people {would come} to hear Him at the temple.
