Chapter 11
The Lord’s Prayer
1
[One day]… in a place where [Jesus] vvv had just finished praying, one of His disciples requested…, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.

So [Jesus] told them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come.

And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.

Ask, Seek, Knock

Then [Jesus] said to them, “[Suppose one] of you goes to - [his] friend at midnight and says…, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves [of bread],
Καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν πορεύσεται πρὸς αὐτὸν ἕξει φίλον καὶ μεσονυκτίου καὶ εἴπῃ αὐτῷ Φίλε χρῆσόν μοι τρεῖς ἄρτους Kai eipen pros autous Tis ex hymōn poreusetai pros auton hexei philon kai mesonyktiou kai eipē autō Phile chrēson moi treis artous — NA/TR · 5

because [a] friend of mine has come to me on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him.

And [suppose the one] inside answers…, ‘{Do} not vvv bother me. [My] door {is} already shut, and my children and I are in bed. vvv I cannot get up to give you [anything].

I tell you, even though vvv he will not get up to provide for him because of his vvv vvv friendship, yet because of [the man’s] persistence, he will get up [and] give him as much as he needs.

So I tell you: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and [the door] will be opened to you.

For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, [the door] will be opened.

- What father among you, [if his] son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead…?
δὲ Τίνα τὸν πατέρα ἐξ ὑμῶν ὁ υἱὸς αἰτήσει ἰχθύν ἐπιδώσει αὐτῷ ὄφιν καὶ ἀντὶ ἰχθύος de Tina ton patera ex hymōn ho huios aitēsei ichthyn epidōsei autō ophin kai anti ichthyos — NA/TR · 11

Or… [if] he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
ἢ καὶ αἰτήσει ᾠόν ἐπιδώσει αὐτῷ σκορπίον ē kai aitēsei ōon epidōsei autō skorpion — NA/TR · 12

So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more {will} [your] Father in heaven give [the] Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!
οὖν εἰ ὑμεῖς ὑπάρχοντες πονηροὶ οἴδατε διδόναι ἀγαθὰ δόματα τοῖς ὑμῶν τέκνοις πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὁ Πατὴρ ὁ ἐξ οὐρανοῦ δώσει Ἅγιον Πνεῦμα τοῖς αἰτοῦσιν αὐτόν oun ei hymeis hyparchontes ponēroi oidate didonai agatha domata tois hymōn teknois posō mallon ho Patēr ho ex ouranou dōsei Hagion Pneuma tois aitousin auton — NA/TR · 13
A House Divided

[One day] [Jesus] was driving out a demon that was mute. And when… the demon was gone, the [man who had been] mute spoke. The crowds were amazed,
Καὶ ἦν ἐκβάλλων δαιμόνιον καὶ αὐτὸ ἦν κωφόν δὲ ἐγένετο τοῦ δαιμονίου ἐξελθόντος ὁ κωφός ἐλάλησεν καὶ οἱ ὄχλοι ἐθαύμασαν Kai ēn ekballōn daimonion kai auto ēn kōphon de egeneto tou daimoniou exelthontos ho kōphos elalēsen kai hoi ochloi ethaumasan — NA/TR · 14

but some of them said, “[It is] by Beelzebul, the prince of the demons, [that] He drives out demons.

And others tested Him by demanding a sign from heaven.
δὲ ἕτεροι πειράζοντες παρ’ αὐτοῦ ἐζήτουν σημεῖον ἐξ οὐρανοῦ de heteroi peirazontes par’ autou ezētoun sēmeion ex ouranou — NA/TR · 16

- Knowing their thoughts, [Jesus] said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste, and a house divided against a house will fall.
δὲ εἰδὼς αὐτῶν τὰ διανοήματα Αὐτὸς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πᾶσα βασιλεία διαμερισθεῖσα ἐφ’ ἑαυτὴν ἐρημοῦται καὶ οἶκος ἐπὶ οἶκον πίπτει de eidōs autōn ta dianoēmata Autos eipen autois Pasa basileia diameristheisa eph’ heautēn erēmoutai kai oikos epi oikon piptei — NA/TR · 17

- If Satan is divided against himself, how {can} his kingdom stand? After all, you say that I drive out demons by Beelzebul.
δὲ καὶ εἰ ὁ Σατανᾶς διεμερίσθη ἐφ’ ἑαυτὸν πῶς αὐτοῦ ἡ βασιλεία σταθήσεται ὅτι λέγετε με ἐκβάλλειν τὰ δαιμόνια ἐν Βεελζεβοὺλ de kai ei ho Satanas diemeristhē eph’ heauton pōs autou hē basileia stathēsetai hoti legete me ekballein ta daimonia en Beelzeboul — NA/TR · 18

And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom {do} your sons drive [them] out? So then…, they will be your judges.
δὲ εἰ ἐγὼ ἐκβάλλω τὰ δαιμόνια ἐν Βεελζεβοὺλ ἐν τίνι ὑμῶν οἱ υἱοὶ ἐκβάλλουσιν διὰ τοῦτο αὐτοὶ ἔσονται ὑμῶν κριταὶ de ei egō ekballō ta daimonia en Beelzeboul en tini hymōn hoi huioi ekballousin dia touto autoi esontai hymōn kritai — NA/TR · 19

But if I drive out demons by [the] finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
δὲ εἰ ἐγὼ ἐκβάλλω τὰ δαιμόνια ἐν δακτύλῳ Θεοῦ ἄρα ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἔφθασεν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς de ei egō ekballō ta daimonia en daktylō Theou ara hē basileia tou Theou ephthasen eph’ hymas — NA/TR · 20

When a strong [man], fully armed, guards his house, his possessions are vvv secure.
Ὅταν ὁ ἰσχυρὸς καθωπλισμένος φυλάσσῃ ἑαυτοῦ τὴν αὐλήν αὐτοῦ τὰ ὑπάρχοντα ἐστὶν ἐν εἰρήνῃ Hotan ho ischyros kathōplismenos phylassē heautou tēn aulēn autou ta hyparchonta estin en eirēnē — NA/TR · 21

But when [someone] stronger… attacks [and] overpowers him, he takes away [the] armor in which [the man] trusted, and [then] he divides up his plunder.
δὲ ἐπὰν ἰσχυρότερος αὐτοῦ ἐπελθὼν νικήσῃ αὐτόν αἴρει αὐτοῦ τὴν πανοπλίαν ἐφ’ ᾗ ἐπεποίθει καὶ διαδίδωσιν αὐτοῦ τὰ σκῦλα de epan ischyroteros autou epelthōn nikēsē auton airei autou tēn panoplian eph’ hē epepoithei kai diadidōsin autou ta skyla — NA/TR · 22

He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who vvv does not gather with Me scatters.
Ὁ ὢν μὴ μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐστιν κατ’ ἐμοῦ καὶ ὁ μὴ συνάγων μετ’ ἐμοῦ σκορπίζει Ho ōn mē met’ emou estin kat’ emou kai ho mē synagōn met’ emou skorpizei — NA/TR · 23
An Unclean Spirit Returns

When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through arid places seeking rest and vvv does not find [it]. Then it says, ‘I will return to [the] house vvv I left.
Ὅταν τὸ ἀκάθαρτον πνεῦμα ἐξέλθῃ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου διέρχεται δι’ ἀνύδρων τόπων ζητοῦν ἀνάπαυσιν καὶ μὴ εὑρίσκον τότε λέγει Ὑποστρέψω εἰς μου τὸν οἶκόν ὅθεν ἐξῆλθον Hotan to akatharton pneuma exelthē apo tou anthrōpou dierchetai di’ anydrōn topōn zētoun anapausin kai mē heuriskon tote legei Hypostrepsō eis mou ton oikon hothen exēlthon — NA/TR · 24

- On its return, it finds [the house] swept clean and put in order.
καὶ ἐλθὸν εὑρίσκει σεσαρωμένον καὶ κεκοσμημένον kai elthon heuriskei sesarōmenon kai kekosmēmenon — NA/TR · 25

Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in [and] dwell there. And the final [plight] of that man is worse than the first.
τότε πορεύεται καὶ παραλαμβάνει ἑπτά ἕτερα πνεύματα πονηρότερα ἑαυτοῦ καὶ εἰσελθόντα κατοικεῖ ἐκεῖ καὶ τὰ ἔσχατα ἐκείνου τοῦ ἀνθρώπου γίνεται χείρονα τῶν πρώτων tote poreuetai kai paralambanei hepta hetera pneumata ponērotera heautou kai eiselthonta katoikei ekei kai ta eschata ekeinou tou anthrōpou ginetai cheirona tōn prōtōn — NA/TR · 26
True Blessedness

As… [Jesus] was saying these things, a woman in the crowd raised [her] voice [and] said -, “Blessed [is] the womb that bore You, and [blessed are] [the] breasts that nursed You!
δὲ Ἐγένετο ἐν αὐτὸν τῷ λέγειν ταῦτα τις γυνὴ ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου ἐπάρασά φωνὴν εἶπεν αὐτῷ Μακαρία ἡ κοιλία ἡ βαστάσασά σε καὶ μαστοὶ οὓς ἐθήλασας de Egeneto en auton tō legein tauta tis gynē ek tou ochlou eparasa phōnēn eipen autō Makaria hē koilia hē bastasasa se kai mastoi hous ethēlasas — NA/TR · 27

But He replied, “Blessed rather [are] those who hear the word of God and obey it.

The Sign of Jonah

As the crowds were increasing, vvv [Jesus] said, “This - is a wicked generation. It demands a sign, but none will be given it except… the sign of Jonah.
δὲ Τῶν ὄχλων ἐπαθροιζομένων ἤρξατο λέγειν αὕτη Ἡ γενεὰ ἐστιν πονηρά γενεὰ ζητεῖ σημεῖον καὶ οὐ σημεῖον δοθήσεται αὐτῇ εἰ μὴ τὸ σημεῖον Ἰωνᾶ de Tōn ochlōn epathroizomenōn ērxato legein hautē Hē genea estin ponēra genea zētei sēmeion kai ou sēmeion dothēsetai autē ei mē to sēmeion Iōna — NA/TR · 29

For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so… the Son of Man will be [a sign] to this generation.
γὰρ καθὼς Ἰωνᾶς ἐγένετο σημεῖον τοῖς Νινευίταις οὕτως καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἔσται ταύτῃ τῇ γενεᾷ gar kathōs Iōnas egeneto sēmeion tois Nineuitais houtōs kai ho Huios tou anthrōpou estai tautē tē genea — NA/TR · 30

The Queen of [the] South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now [One] greater than Solomon [is] here.

[The] men of Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now [One] greater than Jonah [is] here.

The Lamp of the Body
33
No one lights a lamp [and] puts it in a cellar [or] under a basket. Instead, [he sets it] on a stand, so those who enter can see the light.
Οὐδεὶς ἅψας λύχνον τίθησιν εἰς κρύπτην οὐδὲ ὑπὸ τὸν μόδιον ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ τὴν λυχνίαν ἵνα οἱ εἰσπορευόμενοι βλέπωσιν τὸ φέγγος Oudeis hapsas lychnon tithēsin eis kryptēn oude hypo ton modion all’ epi tēn lychnian hina hoi eisporeuomenoi blepōsin to phengos — NA/TR · 33

Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body [is] full of darkness.
σου ὁ ὀφθαλμός ἐστιν Ὁ λύχνος τοῦ σώματός ὅταν σου ὁ ὀφθαλμός ᾖ ἁπλοῦς σου ὅλον τὸ σῶμά καὶ ἐστιν φωτεινόν δὲ ἐπὰν ᾖ πονηρὸς καὶ σου τὸ σῶμά σκοτεινόν sou ho ophthalmos estin Ho lychnos tou sōmatos hotan sou ho ophthalmos ē haplous sou holon to sōma kai estin phōteinon de epan ē ponēros kai sou to sōma skoteinon — NA/TR · 34

Be careful, then, [that] the light within you is not darkness.

So if your [whole] body [is] full of light, [with] no part [of it] vvv in darkness, [you] will be vvv radiant, as though a lamp were shining… on you.
οὖν εἰ σου τὸ σῶμά ὅλον φωτεινόν μὴ τι μέρος ἔχον σκοτεινόν ἔσται ὅλον φωτεινὸν ὡς ὅταν ὁ λύχνος τῇ ἀστραπῇ φωτίζῃ σε oun ei sou to sōma holon phōteinon mē ti meros echon skoteinon estai holon phōteinon hōs hotan ho lychnos tē astrapē phōtizē se — NA/TR · 36
Woes to Pharisees and Experts in the Law

- As [Jesus] was speaking, a Pharisee invited Him to dine with him; [so] He went in [and] reclined at the table.
δὲ Ἐν τῷ λαλῆσαι Φαρισαῖος ἐρωτᾷ αὐτὸν ὅπως ἀριστήσῃ παρ’ αὐτῷ δὲ εἰσελθὼν ἀνέπεσεν de En tō lalēsai Pharisaios erōta auton hopōs aristēsē par’ autō de eiselthōn anepesen — NA/TR · 37

But the Pharisee was surprised to see that vvv [Jesus] did not first wash… before the meal.
δὲ ὁ Φαρισαῖος ἐθαύμασεν ἰδὼν ὅτι οὐ ἐβαπτίσθη πρῶτον πρὸ τοῦ ἀρίστου de ho Pharisaios ethaumasen idōn hoti ou ebaptisthē prōton pro tou aristou — NA/TR · 38

Then the Lord said -, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.
δὲ ὁ Κύριος Εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν Νῦν ὑμεῖς οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καθαρίζετε τὸ ἔξωθεν τοῦ ποτηρίου καὶ τοῦ πίνακος δὲ τὸ ἔσωθεν ὑμῶν γέμει ἁρπαγῆς καὶ πονηρίας de ho Kyrios Eipen pros auton Nyn hymeis hoi Pharisaioi katharizete to exōthen tou potēriou kai tou pinakos de to esōthen hymōn gemei harpagēs kai ponērias — NA/TR · 39

[You] fools! [Did] not the [One who] made the outside make the inside as well?
ἄφρονες οὐχ ὁ ποιήσας τὸ ἔξωθεν ἐποίησεν τὸ ἔσωθεν καὶ aphrones ouch ho poiēsas to exōthen epoiēsen to esōthen kai — NA/TR · 40

But give [as] alms the things that are within [you], and behold, everything will be clean for you.
πλὴν δότε ἐλεημοσύνην τὰ ἐνόντα καὶ ἰδοὺ πάντα ἐστιν καθαρὰ ὑμῖν plēn dote eleēmosynēn ta enonta kai idou panta estin kathara hymin — NA/TR · 41

- Woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithes of… mint, - rue, and every herb, but you disregard justice and the love of God. You should have practiced [the latter] without neglecting [the former].
Ἀλλὰ οὐαὶ ὑμῖν τοῖς Φαρισαίοις ὅτι ἀποδεκατοῦτε τὸ ἡδύοσμον καὶ τὸ πήγανον καὶ πᾶν λάχανον καὶ παρέρχεσθε τὴν κρίσιν καὶ τὴν ἀγάπην τοῦ Θεοῦ δὲ ἔδει ποιῆσαι ταῦτα μὴ παρεῖναι κἀκεῖνα Alla ouai hymin tois Pharisaiois hoti apodekatoute to hēdyosmon kai to pēganon kai pan lachanon kai parerchesthe tēn krisin kai tēn agapēn tou Theou de edei poiēsai tauta mē pareinai kakeina — NA/TR · 42

Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the chief seats in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces.
Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν τοῖς Φαρισαίοις ὅτι ἀγαπᾶτε τὴν πρωτοκαθεδρίαν ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς καὶ τοὺς ἀσπασμοὺς ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς Ouai hymin tois Pharisaiois hoti agapate tēn prōtokathedrian en tais synagōgais kai tous aspasmous en tais agorais — NA/TR · 43

Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, [which] men walk over without [even] noticing.
οὐαὶ ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐστὲ ὡς τὰ ἄδηλα τὰ μνημεῖα καὶ οἱ ἄνθρωποι οἱ περιπατοῦντες ἐπάνω οὐκ οἴδασιν ouai hymin hoti este hōs ta adēla ta mnēmeia kai hoi anthrōpoi hoi peripatountes epanō ouk oidasin — NA/TR · 44

- One of the experts in the law vvv told Him, “Teacher, when You say these things, You insult us as well.

“Woe to you as well, experts in the law! - He replied. “For you weigh men down… [with] heavy burdens…, but you yourselves vvv will not lift a… finger {to lighten} [their] load.
