Chapter 3
Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

vvv Once again [Jesus] entered… the synagogue, and a man with a withered hand was there.

- In order to accuse [Jesus], they were watching {to see} if He would heal on the Sabbath.

Then [Jesus] said to the man with the withered hand, “Stand up vvv vvv among [us].

And He asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy [it]? But they were silent.

- [Jesus] looked around at them with anger [and] sorrow at [their] hardness of heart. Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand. So he stretched [it] out, and vvv vvv [it] was restored.

At this…, the Pharisees went out [and] began plotting… with the Herodians - how they might kill [Jesus].

Jesus Heals the Multitudes

[So] Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea, accompanied by a large crowd from Galilee, - Judea,
Καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν μετὰ αὐτοῦ τῶν μαθητῶν πρὸς τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ ἠκολούθησεν πολὺ πλῆθος ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς Ἰουδαίας Kai ho Iēsous anechōrēsen meta autou tōn mathētōn pros tēn thalassan kai ēkolouthēsen poly plēthos apo tēs Galilaias kai apo tēs Ioudaias — NA/TR · 7

- Jerusalem, - Idumea, the region beyond the Jordan, and the vicinity of Tyre and Sidon. [The] large crowd came to Him when they heard what great things He was doing.
καὶ ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς Ἰδουμαίας καὶ πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου καὶ περὶ Τύρον καὶ Σιδῶνα πολύ πλῆθος ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτόν ἀκούοντες ὅσα ἐποίει kai apo Hierosolymōn kai apo tēs Idoumaias kai peran tou Iordanou kai peri Tyron kai Sidōna poly plēthos ēlthon pros auton akouontes hosa epoiei — NA/TR · 8

- [Jesus] asked His disciples to {have} a boat ready for Him so that the crowd vvv would not crush Him.

For He had healed so many that all who had diseases were pressing forward to touch Him.

And when the unclean spirits saw Him, they fell down before Him and cried out -, “You are the Son of God!
καὶ τὰ τὰ ἀκάθαρτα πνεύματα ὅταν ἐθεώρουν αὐτὸν προσέπιπτον αὐτῷ καὶ ἔκραζον λέγοντα ὅτι Σὺ εἶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ kai ta ta akatharta pneumata hotan etheōroun auton prosepipton autō kai ekrazon legonta hoti Sy ei ho Huios tou Theou — NA/TR · 11

But He warned them sternly not to make Him known.
καὶ ἐπετίμα αὐτοῖς πολλὰ μὴ ἵνα ποιήσωσιν αὐτὸν φανερὸν kai epetima autois polla mē hina poiēsōsin auton phaneron — NA/TR · 12
The Twelve Apostles

Then [Jesus] went up on the mountain and called for those He wanted, and they came to Him.

- He appointed twelve [of them], [whom] He designated as apostles, to accompany… Him, to be sent out to preach,

and to have authority to drive out demons.

- [These are] the twelve He appointed: - Simon (whom He named Peter),

- James [son] of Zebedee and - his brother John ([whom] vvv He named Boanerges, meaning “Sons of Thunder”),

and Judas Iscariot, [who] betrayed [Jesus].

A House Divided

Then [Jesus] went home, and once again a crowd gathered, so that [He and His disciples] could not even vvv eat -.

[When] vvv His family… heard [about this], they went out to take custody of Him, saying -, “He is out of His mind.

And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul, and, “By the prince of the demons He drives out demons.

So [Jesus] called them together… [and] began to speak to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan?

- If a kingdom is divided against itself, vvv vvv [it] vvv cannot stand.
καὶ ἐὰν βασιλεία μερισθῇ ἐφ’ ἑαυτὴν ἐκείνη ἡ βασιλεία οὐ δύναται σταθῆναι kai ean basileia meristhē eph’ heautēn ekeinē hē basileia ou dynatai stathēnai — NA/TR · 24

- If a house is divided against itself, vvv vvv [it] vvv cannot stand.
καὶ ἐὰν οἰκία μερισθῇ ἐφ’ ἑαυτὴν ἐκείνη ἡ οἰκία οὐ δυνήσεται σταθῆναι kai ean oikia meristhē eph’ heautēn ekeinē hē oikia ou dynēsetai stathēnai — NA/TR · 25

And if Satan is divided and rises against himself, vvv he cannot stand; [his] end has come.
καὶ εἰ ὁ Σατανᾶς ἐμερίσθη καὶ ἀνέστη ἐφ’ ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται στῆναι ἀλλὰ τέλος ἔχει kai ei ho Satanas emeristhē kai anestē eph’ heauton ou dynatai stēnai alla telos echei — NA/TR · 26

Indeed, no one… can enter… vvv a strong man’s house to steal his possessions unless… vvv he first ties up the strong man. Then he can plunder his house.
ἀλλ’ οὐδεὶς οὐ δύναται εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὴν τοῦ ἰσχυροῦ οἰκίαν διαρπάσαι αὐτοῦ τὰ σκεύη ἐὰν μὴ πρῶτον δήσῃ τὸν ἰσχυρὸν καὶ τότε διαρπάσει αὐτοῦ τὴν οἰκίαν all’ oudeis ou dynatai eiselthōn eis tēn tou ischyrou oikian diarpasai autou ta skeuē ean mē prōton dēsē ton ischyron kai tote diarpasei autou tēn oikian — NA/TR · 27
The Unpardonable Sin

Truly I tell you -, the sons of men will be forgiven all sins and blasphemies, as many as vvv they utter.
Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι τοῖς υἱοῖς τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀφεθήσεται πάντα τὰ ἁμαρτήματα καὶ αἱ βλασφημίαι ὅσα ἐὰν βλασφημήσωσιν Amēn legō hymin hoti tois huiois tōn anthrōpōn aphethēsetai panta ta hamartēmata kai hai blasphēmiai hosa ean blasphēmēsōsin — NA/TR · 28

But whoever… blasphemes against the Holy Spirit {will} never… be forgiven; he is guilty [of] eternal sin.

[ Jesus made this statement ] because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers

Then [Jesus’] mother and - brothers came and stood outside. They sent [someone] in to summon Him,
Καὶ αὐτοῦ ἡ μήτηρ καὶ αὐτοῦ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ ἔρχονται καὶ στήκοντες ἔξω ἀπέστειλαν πρὸς αὐτὸν καλοῦντες αὐτόν Kai autou hē mētēr kai autou hoi adelphoi erchontai kai stēkontes exō apesteilan pros auton kalountes auton — NA/TR · 31

and a crowd was sitting around Him. “Look, He was told…, “Your mother and - brothers are outside, asking for You.

But [Jesus] replied -, “Who are My mother and My brothers?

- Looking at those seated in a circle around Him, He said, “Here [are] My mother and My brothers!

For whoever… does the will of God is My brother and sister and mother.
