Chapter 15

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

1

  • Early in the morning, the chief priests, - elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin devised a plan. They bound Jesus, led [Him] away, and handed [Him] over to Pilate.

Καὶ εὐθὺς πρωῒ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς μετὰ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ γραμματέων καὶ τὸ ὅλον συνέδριον ποιήσαντες συμβούλιον δήσαντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπήνεγκαν καὶ παρέδωκαν Πιλάτῳ Kai euthys prōi hoi archiereis meta tōn presbyterōn kai grammateōn kai to holon synedrion poiēsantes symboulion dēsantes ton Iēsoun apēnenkan kai paredōkan Pilatō — NA/TR · 1

So Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews? “You have said so, - [Jesus] replied…

And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things.

Καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς κατηγόρουν αὐτοῦ πολλά Kai hoi archiereis katēgoroun autou polla — NA/TR · 3

Then Pilate questioned Him again…, “vvv Have You no answer…? Look how many charges they are bringing against You!

δὲ Ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἐπηρώτα αὐτὸν πάλιν λέγων Οὐκ ἀποκρίνῃ οὐδέν ἴδε πόσα κατηγοροῦσιν σου de Ho Pilatos epērōta auton palin legōn Ouk apokrinē ouden ide posa katēgorousin sou — NA/TR · 4

But to Pilate’s amazement, Jesus made no further reply…

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

Now {it was Pilate’s custom} at [the] feast to release to [the people] a prisoner vvv of their choosing.

δὲ Κατὰ ἑορτὴν ἀπέλυεν αὐτοῖς ἕνα δέσμιον ὃν παρῃτοῦντο de Kata heortēn apelyen autois hena desmion hon parētounto — NA/TR · 6

And [a man] named Barabbas was imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection.

δὲ ὁ λεγόμενος Βαραββᾶς ἦν δεδεμένος μετὰ τῶν στασιαστῶν οἵτινες πεποιήκεισαν φόνον ἐν τῇ στάσει de ho legomenos Barabbas ēn dedemenos meta tōn stasiastōn hoitines pepoiēkeisan phonon en tē stasei — NA/TR · 7

[So] the crowd went up [and] began asking [Pilate] to keep his custom…

καὶ ὁ ὄχλος ἀναβὰς ἤρξατο αἰτεῖσθαι καθὼς ἐποίει αὐτοῖς kai ho ochlos anabas ērxato aiteisthai kathōs epoiei autois — NA/TR · 8

“Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews? - Pilate asked…

For he knew [it was] out of envy that the chief priests had handed [Jesus] over…

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them instead.

Pilate Delivers Up Jesus

[So] Pilate asked… them again, “What then do you want me to do with the [One] you call the King of the Jews?

δὲ Ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἀποκριθεὶς ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς πάλιν Τί οὖν θέλετε ποιήσω ὃν λέγετε τὸν Βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων de Ho Pilatos apokritheis elegen autois palin Ti oun thelete poiēsō hon legete ton Basilea tōn Ioudaiōn — NA/TR · 12

And they shouted back, “Crucify Him!

“Why? asked Pilate -. “What evil has He done? But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him!

γὰρ δὲ ἔλεγεν Ὁ Πιλᾶτος αὐτοῖς Τί κακόν ἐποίησεν δὲ Οἱ ἔκραξαν περισσῶς Σταύρωσον αὐτόν gar de elegen Ho Pilatos autois Ti kakon epoiēsen de Hoi ekraxan perissōs Staurōson auton — NA/TR · 14

And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. But {he had} Jesus flogged, [and] handed Him over to be crucified.

δὲ βουλόμενος ποιῆσαι τὸ ἱκανὸν τῷ ὄχλῳ Ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἀπέλυσεν τὸν Βαραββᾶν αὐτοῖς καὶ τὸν Ἰησοῦν φραγελλώσας παρέδωκεν ἵνα σταυρωθῇ de boulomenos poiēsai to hikanon tō ochlō Ho Pilatos apelysen ton Barabban autois kai ton Iēsoun phragellōsas paredōken hina staurōthē — NA/TR · 15

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

Then the soldiers led [Jesus] away… into the palace (that is, [the] Praetorium) and called the whole company {together}.

δὲ Οἱ στρατιῶται ἀπήγαγον αὐτὸν ἔσω τῆς αὐλῆς ὅ ἐστιν Πραιτώριον καὶ συνκαλοῦσιν τὴν ὅλην σπεῖραν de Hoi stratiōtai apēgagon auton esō tēs aulēs ho estin Praitōrion kai synkalousin tēn holēn speiran — NA/TR · 16

  • They dressed Him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, [and] set [it] on His [head].

And they began to salute Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!

  • They kept striking His head with a staff and spitting on Him. And they knelt down… [and] bowed before Him.

Καὶ ἔτυπτον αὐτοῦ τὴν κεφαλὴν καλάμῳ καὶ ἐνέπτυον αὐτῷ καὶ τιθέντες τὰ γόνατα προσεκύνουν αὐτῷ Kai etypton autou tēn kephalēn kalamō kai eneptyon autō kai tithentes ta gonata prosekynoun autō — NA/TR · 19

After… they had mocked Him, they removed the purple [robe] and put His own clothes [back] on Him. Then they led Him out… to crucify Him.

The Crucifixion

[Now] Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and [the soldiers] forced [him] to carry the cross of [Jesus].

  • They brought [Jesus] to a place [called] Golgotha, which vvv means [The] Place of the Skull.

There they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He vvv did not take [it].

And they crucified Him. vvv They also divided His garments by casting lots to decide what [each of them] would take.

  • It was [the] third hour when they crucified Him.

And the charge inscribed against Him vvv read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.

καὶ ἡ αἰτίας ἐπιγραφὴ τῆς αὐτοῦ ἦν ἐπιγεγραμμένη Ο ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ kai hē aitias epigraphē tēs autou ēn epigegrammenē HO BASILEUS TŌN IOUDAIŌN — NA/TR · 26

[Along] with [Jesus], they crucified two robbers, one on [His] right and one on His left.

Καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ σταυροῦσιν δύο λῃστάς ἕνα ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ ἕνα ἐξ αὐτοῦ εὐωνύμων Kai syn autō staurousin dyo lēstas hena ek dexiōn kai hena ex autou euōnymōn — NA/TR · 27

And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild [it] in three days,

Καὶ οἱ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες αὐτῶν τὰς κεφαλὰς καὶ λέγοντες Οὐὰ ὁ καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ οἰκοδομῶν ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις Kai hoi paraporeuomenoi eblasphēmoun auton kinountes autōn tas kephalas kai legontes Oua ho katalyōn ton naon kai oikodomōn en trisin hēmerais — NA/TR · 29

come down from the cross [and] save Yourself!

καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ σῶσον σεαυτὸν katabas apo tou staurou sōson seauton — NA/TR · 30

In the same way…, the chief priests and scribes mocked [Him] among themselves, saying, “He saved others, vvv [but] He cannot save Himself!

Ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων ἐμπαίζοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους ἔλεγον ἔσωσεν Ἄλλους οὐ δύναται σῶσαι ἑαυτὸν Homoiōs kai hoi archiereis meta tōn grammateōn empaizontes pros allēlous elegon esōsen Allous ou dynatai sōsai heauton — NA/TR · 31

{Let} the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe! And even those who were crucified with Him berated Him.

The Death of Jesus

  • From [the] sixth hour until [the] ninth hour darkness came over all the land.

  • At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out vvv in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? which vvv means, “My God, My God, why… have You forsaken Me?”

When some of those standing nearby heard [this], they said, “Behold, He is calling Elijah.

And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine. He put [it] on a reed and held it up for [Jesus] to drink…, saying, “Leave [Him] alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down…

But Jesus let out vvv a loud cry [and] breathed His last.

And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

When the centurion standing there vvv in front of [Jesus] saw [how] He had breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was [the] Son of God!

And there were also women watching from a distance. Among them [were] Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.

[These women] had followed [Jesus] and ministered to Him while He was in Galilee, and [there were] many other [women] who had come up to Jerusalem with Him.

The Burial of Jesus

Now it was already evening. Since it was Preparation Day (that is, [the day] before the Sabbath),

Joseph of Arimathea, [a] prominent Council member who himself… was waiting for the kingdom of God, boldly went… to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus.

Ἰωσὴφ ὁ ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας εὐσχήμων βουλευτής ὃς αὐτὸς καὶ ἦν προσδεχόμενος τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ τολμήσας ἐλθὼν εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς τὸν Πιλᾶτον καὶ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ Iōsēph ho apo Harimathaias euschēmōn bouleutēs hos autos kai ēn prosdechomenos tēn basileian tou Theou tolmēsas elthōn eisēlthen pros ton Pilaton kai ētēsato to sōma tou Iēsou — NA/TR · 43

  • Pilate was surprised [to hear] that vvv [Jesus] was already dead, so he summoned the centurion to ask if [this was so]…

  • When [Pilate] had confirmed [it] with the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

So [Joseph] bought a linen cloth, took down [the body of Jesus], wrapped [it] in the cloth, and placed [it] in a tomb that had been cut out of [the] rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.

  • Mary Magdalene and Mary the [mother] of Joseph saw where [His body] was placed.
