Chapter 15
The Tradition of the Elders

Then [some] Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem [and] asked,

“Why {do}… Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? vvv They do not wash their hands before they eat…
Διὰ τί σου οἱ μαθηταί παραβαίνουσιν τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων γὰρ οὐ νίπτονται αὐτῶν τὰς χεῖρας ὅταν ἐσθίωσιν ἄρτον Dia ti sou hoi mathētai parabainousin tēn paradosin tōn presbyterōn gar ou niptontai autōn tas cheiras hotan esthiōsin arton — NA/TR · 2

δὲ Ὁ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς καὶ Διὰ τί ὑμεῖς παραβαίνετε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ ὑμῶν τὴν παράδοσιν de Ho apokritheis eipen autois kai Dia ti hymeis parabainete tēn entolēn tou Theou dia hymōn tēn paradosin — NA/TR · 3

For God said, ‘Honor [your] father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses [his] father or mother vvv must be put to death.’

But you say that if anyone… says to [his] father or mother, ‘Whatever vvv you would have received from me is a gift devoted [to God],’

vvv vvv he need not honor his father or - mother [with it]. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
οὐ μὴ τιμήσει αὐτοῦ τὸν πατέρα ἢ αὐτοῦ τὴν μητέρα καὶ ἠκυρώσατε τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ ὑμῶν τὴν παράδοσιν ou mē timēsei autou ton patera ē autou tēn mētera kai ēkyrōsate ton logon tou Theou dia hymōn tēn paradosin — NA/TR · 6

You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you -:
ὑποκριταί Ἠσαΐας ἐπροφήτευσεν καλῶς περὶ ὑμῶν λέγων hypokritai Ēsaias eprophēteusen kalōs peri hymōn legōn — NA/TR · 7

‘These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far… from Me.
οὗτος Ὁ λαὸς τιμᾷ με τοῖς χείλεσίν δὲ αὐτῶν Ἡ καρδία ἀπέχει πόρρω ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ houtos Ho laos tima me tois cheilesin de autōn Hē kardia apechei porrō ap’ emou — NA/TR · 8

- They worship Me in vain; they teach [as] doctrine [the] precepts of men.’

What Defiles a Man

- [Jesus] called the crowd [to Him] [and] said -, “Listen and understand.
Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν ὄχλον εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἀκούετε καὶ συνίετε Kai proskalesamenos ton ochlon eipen autois Akouete kai syniete — NA/TR · 10

A man is not defiled… by what enters… [his] mouth, but - - by what comes out of [it].
τὸν ἄνθρωπον κοινοῖ οὐ τὸ εἰσερχόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα ἀλλὰ τοῦτο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸ ἐκπορευόμενον ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ton anthrōpon koinoi ou to eiserchomenon eis to stoma alla touto koinoi ton anthrōpon to ekporeuomenon ek tou stomatos — NA/TR · 11

Then the disciples came to Him [and] said, “Are You aware that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this -?

But [Jesus] replied -, “Every plant that My heavenly Father vvv has not planted will be pulled up by its roots.

Disregard them! They are blind guides -. If [a] blind [man] leads [a] blind [man], both will fall into a pit.

- Peter said… to Him, “Explain this parable to us.

“Do you vvv still not understand? - [Jesus] asked.
ἐστε ὑμεῖς καὶ Ἀκμὴν ἀσύνετοί δὲ Ὁ εἶπεν este hymeis kai Akmēn asynetoi de Ho eipen — NA/TR · 16

“vvv Do you not yet realize that whatever enters… the mouth goes into the stomach and then is eliminated…?
οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα χωρεῖ εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν καὶ ἐκβάλλεται εἰς ἀφεδρῶνα ou noeite hoti pan to eisporeuomenon eis to stoma chōrei eis tēn koilian kai ekballetai eis aphedrōna — NA/TR · 17

But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a man.
δὲ τὰ ἐκπορευόμενα ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ἐξέρχεται ἐκ τῆς καρδίας κἀκεῖνα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον de ta ekporeuomena ek tou stomatos exerchetai ek tēs kardias kakeina koinoi ton anthrōpon — NA/TR · 18

For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, [and] slander.
γὰρ ἐκ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχονται πονηροί διαλογισμοὶ φόνοι μοιχεῖαι πορνεῖαι κλοπαί ψευδομαρτυρίαι βλασφημίαι gar ek tēs kardias exerchontai ponēroi dialogismoi phonoi moicheiai porneiai klopai pseudomartyriai blasphēmiai — NA/TR · 19

These are what defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands vvv does not defile [him].

- Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon.
Καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς τὰ μέρη Τύρου καὶ Σιδῶνος Kai exelthōn ekeithen ho Iēsous anechōrēsen eis ta merē Tyrou kai Sidōnos — NA/TR · 21

And… a Canaanite woman from vvv that region came [to Him], crying out -, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter {is} miserably possessed by a demon.
καὶ ἰδοὺ Χαναναία γυνὴ ἀπὸ τῶν ἐκείνων ὁρίων ἐξελθοῦσα ἔκραζεν λέγουσα Κύριε υἱὸς Δαυίδ Ἐλέησόν με μου ἡ θυγάτηρ κακῶς δαιμονίζεται kai idou Chananaia gynē apo tōn ekeinōn horiōn exelthousa ekrazen legousa Kyrie huios Dauid Eleēson me mou hē thygatēr kakōs daimonizetai — NA/TR · 22

But vvv [Jesus] did not answer a word -. So His disciples came [and] urged Him -, “Send her away…, for she keeps crying out after us.

- He answered…, “vvv I was sent only… to the lost sheep of [the] house of Israel.

- [The woman] came [and] knelt before Him. “Lord, help me! she said.

But [Jesus] replied -, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss [it] to the dogs.
δὲ Ὁ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν ἔστιν Οὐκ καλὸν λαβεῖν τὸν τῶν τέκνων ἄρτον καὶ βαλεῖν τοῖς κυναρίοις de Ho apokritheis eipen estin Ouk kalon labein ton tōn teknōn arton kai balein tois kynariois — NA/TR · 26

“Yes, Lord, - she said, “- even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.

“O woman, - Jesus answered…, “your faith is great! Let it be done for you as you desire. And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
Ὦ γύναι Τότε ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτῇ σου ἡ πίστις μεγάλη γενηθήτω σοι ὡς θέλεις καὶ αὐτῆς ἡ θυγάτηρ ἰάθη ἀπὸ τῆς ἐκείνης ὥρας Ō gynai Tote ho Iēsous apokritheis eipen autē sou hē pistis megalē genēthētō soi hōs theleis kai autēs hē thygatēr iathē apo tēs ekeinēs hōras — NA/TR · 28
The Feeding of the Four Thousand

- Moving on from there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then He went up on a mountain [and] sat down.
Καὶ μεταβὰς ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἦλθεν παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἀναβὰς εἰς τὸ ὄρος ἐκάθητο ἐκεῖ Kai metabas ekeithen ho Iēsous ēlthen para tēn thalassan tēs Galilaias kai anabas eis to oros ekathēto ekei — NA/TR · 29

- Large crowds came to Him, bringing… [the] lame, [the] blind, [the] crippled, [the] mute, and many others, and laid them at His feet, and He healed them.
καὶ πολλοὶ ὄχλοι προσῆλθον αὐτῷ ἔχοντες μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν χωλούς τυφλούς κυλλούς κωφούς καὶ πολλούς ἑτέρους καὶ ἔρριψαν αὐτοὺς παρὰ αὐτοῦ τοὺς πόδας καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτούς kai polloi ochloi prosēlthon autō echontes meth’ heautōn chōlous typhlous kyllous kōphous kai pollous heterous kai erripsan autous para autou tous podas kai etherapeusen autous — NA/TR · 30

- The crowd was amazed when they saw [the] mute speaking, [the] crippled restored, [the] lame walking, and [the] blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.

Then Jesus called His disciples [to Him] [and] said, “I have compassion for [this] crowd, because they have already been… with Me three days and have nothing to eat. vvv I do not want to send them away… hungry, vvv or they may faint along the way.
δὲ Ὁ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοῦ τοὺς μαθητὰς εἶπεν Σπλαγχνίζομαι ἐπὶ τὸν ὄχλον ὅτι προσμένουσίν ἤδη μοι τρεῖς ἡμέραι καὶ ἔχουσιν οὐκ τί φάγωσιν καὶ οὐ θέλω ἀπολῦσαι αὐτοὺς νήστεις μή‿ ποτε ἐκλυθῶσιν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ de Ho Iēsous proskalesamenos autou tous mathētas eipen Splanchnizomai epi ton ochlon hoti prosmenousin ēdē moi treis hēmerai kai echousin ouk ti phagōsin kai ou thelō apolysai autous nēsteis mē pote eklythōsin en tē hodō — NA/TR · 32

- The disciples replied -, “Where in this desolate place could we [find] enough bread vvv to feed such a large crowd?

“How many loaves do you have? - Jesus asked -. “Seven, - they replied, “and a few small fish.

And He instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground.

Taking the seven loaves and the fish, He gave thanks [and] broke [them]. Then He gave [them] to [the] disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the people.
ἔλαβεν τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς ἰχθύας καὶ εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις elaben tous hepta artous kai tous ichthyas kai eucharistēsas eklasen kai edidou tois mathētais de hoi mathētai tois ochlois — NA/TR · 36

- They all ate and were satisfied, and [the disciples] picked up seven basketfuls… of broken pieces that were left over.

A total of… four thousand men were fed, besides women and children.

After [Jesus] had dismissed the crowds, He got into… the boat and went to the region of Magadan.
