Chapter 12
The Lord of the Sabbath
1
At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick [the] heads of grain and eat [them].

- [When] [the] Pharisees saw [this], they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what vvv is unlawful… on [the] Sabbath.

- He entered… the house of God, and [he and his companions] ate the consecrated bread…, which was not lawful for [them]… to eat, but… only for the priests.

Or vvv haven’t you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break the Sabbath and yet are innocent?
Ἢ οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε ἐν τῷ νόμῳ ὅτι τοῖς σάββασιν οἱ ἱερεῖς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ βεβηλοῦσιν τὸ σάββατον καὶ εἰσιν ἀναίτιοί Ē ouk anegnōte en tō nomō hoti tois sabbasin hoi hiereis en tō hierō bebēlousin to sabbaton kai eisin anaitioi — NA/TR · 5

But I tell you that One greater than the temple is here.

If only you had known vvv the meaning of ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ vvv vvv you would not have condemned the innocent.

For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

- Moving on from there, [Jesus] entered… their synagogue,
Καὶ μεταβὰς ἐκεῖθεν ἦλθεν εἰς αὐτῶν τὴν συναγωγὴν Kai metabas ekeithen ēlthen eis autōn tēn synagōgēn — NA/TR · 9

and a man with a withered hand [was there]. In order to accuse [Jesus], they asked Him -, vvv “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?
καὶ ἄνθρωπος ἔχων ξηράν χεῖρα ἰδοὺ ἵνα κατηγορήσωσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν λέγοντες Εἰ ἔξεστιν θεραπεῦσαι τοῖς σάββασιν kai anthrōpos echōn xēran cheira idou hina katēgorēsōsin autou kai epērōtēsan auton legontes Ei exestin therapeusai tois sabbasin — NA/TR · 10

- He replied…, “If vvv one of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, vvv will he not take hold of it and lift [it] out?
δὲ Ὁ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἐὰν Τίς ἄνθρωπος ἔσται ἐξ ὑμῶν ὃς ἕξει ἕν πρόβατον καὶ τοῦτο ἐμπέσῃ εἰς βόθυνον τοῖς σάββασιν οὐχὶ κρατήσει αὐτὸ καὶ ἐγερεῖ de Ho eipen autois ean Tis anthrōpos estai ex hymōn hos hexei hen probaton kai touto empesē eis bothynon tois sabbasin ouchi kratēsei auto kai egerei — NA/TR · 11

- How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.

Then [Jesus] said to [the] man, “Stretch out your hand. So he stretched [it] out, and it was restored to full use, just like the other.

But the Pharisees went out [and] plotted… - how they might kill [Jesus].

God’s Chosen Servant

Aware of this -, Jesus withdrew from that place. Large crowds followed Him, and He healed them all,
γνοὺς δὲ Ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν ἐκεῖθεν καὶ πολλοί ὄχλοι ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτοὺς πάντας gnous de Ho Iēsous anechōrēsen ekeithen kai polloi ochloi ēkolouthēsan autō kai etherapeusen autous pantas — NA/TR · 15

- warning them not to make Him known.
καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα μὴ ποιήσωσιν αὐτὸν φανερὸν kai epetimēsen autois hina mē poiēsōsin auton phaneron — NA/TR · 16

This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah -:
ἵνα πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ τοῦ προφήτου Ἠσαΐου λέγοντος hina plērōthē to rhēthen dia tou prophētou Ēsaiou legontos — NA/TR · 17

“Here is My Servant, whom I have chosen, My beloved, in whom My soul delights. I will put My Spirit on Him, and He will proclaim justice to the nations.
Ἰδοὺ μου ὁ παῖς ὃν ᾑρέτισα μου ὁ ἀγαπητός εἰς ὃν μου ἡ ψυχή εὐδόκησεν θήσω μου τὸ Πνεῦμά ἐπ’ αὐτόν καὶ ἀπαγγελεῖ κρίσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν Idou mou ho pais hon hēretisa mou ho agapētos eis hon mou hē psychē eudokēsen thēsō mou to Pneuma ep’ auton kai apangelei krisin tois ethnesin — NA/TR · 18

vvv He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear His voice in the streets.

A bruised reed vvv He will not break, and a smoldering wick vvv He will not extinguish, till… He leads justice to victory.
συντετριμμένον κάλαμον οὐ κατεάξει καὶ τυφόμενον λίνον οὐ σβέσει ἕως ἂν ἐκβάλῃ τὴν κρίσιν εἰς νῖκος syntetrimmenon kalamon ou kateaxei kai typhomenon linon ou sbesei heōs an ekbalē tēn krisin eis nikos — NA/TR · 20

- In His name [the] nations will put their hope.”

A House Divided
22
Then a demon-possessed man [who was] blind and mute was brought to [Jesus], and He healed [the man] so that [he] could speak and see.
Τότε δαιμονιζόμενος τυφλὸς καὶ κωφός προσηνέχθη αὐτῷ καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτόν ὥστε τὸν κωφὸν λαλεῖν καὶ βλέπειν Tote daimonizomenos typhlos kai kōphos prosēnechthē autō kai etherapeusen auton hōste ton kōphon lalein kai blepein — NA/TR · 22

- The crowds vvv were astounded and asked, “Could this be… the Son of David?

But when [the] Pharisees heard this, they said, “Only… by Beelzebul, [the] prince of demons, {does} this [man] vvv drive out demons.
δὲ Οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες εἶπον εἰ μὴ ἐν τῷ Βεελζεβοὺλ ἄρχοντι τῶν δαιμονίων Οὗτος οὐκ ἐκβάλλει τὰ δαιμόνια de Hoi Pharisaioi akousantes eipon ei mē en tō Beelzeboul archonti tōn daimoniōn Houtos ouk ekballei ta daimonia — NA/TR · 24

- Knowing their thoughts, [Jesus] said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste, and every city or household divided against itself vvv will not stand.
δὲ Εἰδὼς αὐτῶν τὰς ἐνθυμήσεις εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πᾶσα βασιλεία μερισθεῖσα καθ’ ἑαυτῆς ἐρημοῦται καὶ πᾶσα πόλις ἢ οἰκία μερισθεῖσα καθ’ ἑαυτῆς οὐ σταθήσεται de Eidōs autōn tas enthymēseis eipen autois Pasa basileia meristheisa kath’ heautēs erēmoutai kai pasa polis ē oikia meristheisa kath’ heautēs ou stathēsetai — NA/TR · 25

- If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then {can} his kingdom stand?
καὶ εἰ ὁ Σατανᾶς ἐκβάλλει τὸν Σατανᾶν ἐμερίσθη ἐφ’ ἑαυτὸν πῶς οὖν αὐτοῦ ἡ βασιλεία σταθήσεται kai ei ho Satanas ekballei ton Satanan emeristhē eph’ heauton pōs oun autou hē basileia stathēsetai — NA/TR · 26

And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom {do} your sons drive them out? So then…, they will be your judges.
Καὶ εἰ ἐγὼ ἐκβάλλω τὰ δαιμόνια ἐν Βεελζεβοὺλ ἐν τίνι ὑμῶν οἱ υἱοὶ ἐκβάλλουσιν διὰ τοῦτο αὐτοὶ ἔσονται ὑμῶν κριταὶ Kai ei egō ekballō ta daimonia en Beelzeboul en tini hymōn hoi huioi ekballousin dia touto autoi esontai hymōn kritai — NA/TR · 27

But if I drive out demons by [the] Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
δὲ εἰ ἐγὼ ἐκβάλλω τὰ δαιμόνια ἐν Πνεύματι Θεοῦ ἄρα ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἔφθασεν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς de ei egō ekballō ta daimonia en Pneumati Theou ara hē basileia tou Theou ephthasen eph’ hymas — NA/TR · 28

Or [again], how can anyone enter… a strong [man’s] house and steal his possessions, unless… {he} first ties up the strong [man]? Then he can plunder his house.
Ἢ πῶς δύναταί τις εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τοῦ ἰσχυροῦ τὴν οἰκίαν καὶ ἁρπάσαι αὐτοῦ τὰ σκεύη ἐὰν μὴ πρῶτον δήσῃ τὸν ἰσχυρόν καὶ τότε διαρπάσει αὐτοῦ τὴν οἰκίαν Ē pōs dynatai tis eiselthein eis tou ischyrou tēn oikian kai harpasai autou ta skeuē ean mē prōton dēsē ton ischyron kai tote diarpasei autou tēn oikian — NA/TR · 29

He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who {does} not gather with Me scatters.

The Unpardonable Sin

Therefore… I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against [the] Spirit {will} not be forgiven.

- vvv Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven…, but vvv whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit vvv will not be forgiven…, [either] in this age [or] in the [one] to come.
καὶ ἐὰν ὃς εἴπῃ λόγον κατὰ τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀφεθήσεται αὐτῷ δ’ ἂν ὃς εἴπῃ κατὰ τοῦ τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος οὐκ ἀφεθήσεται αὐτῷ οὔτε ἐν τούτῳ τῷ αἰῶνι οὔτε ἐν τῷ μέλλοντι kai ean hos eipē logon kata tou Huiou tou anthrōpou aphethēsetai autō d’ an hos eipē kata tou tou Hagiou Pneumatos ouk aphethēsetai autō oute en toutō tō aiōni oute en tō mellonti — NA/TR · 32
Good and Bad Fruit

- Make a tree good and its fruit [will be] good, or make a tree bad and its fruit [will be] bad, for a tree is known by [its] fruit.

You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.

The good man brings good things out of his good store of treasure, and the evil man brings evil things out of his evil store of treasure.

But I tell you that men will give an account - on [the] day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.

For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.

The Sign of Jonah

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him…, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.

- [Jesus] replied -, “A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, [but] none… will be given it except… the sign of the prophet Jonah.

For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
γὰρ ὥσπερ Ἰωνᾶς ἦν τρεῖς ἡμέρας καὶ τρεῖς νύκτας ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ τοῦ κήτους οὕτως ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἔσται τρεῖς ἡμέρας καὶ τρεῖς νύκτας ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ τῆς γῆς gar hōsper Iōnas ēn treis hēmeras kai treis nyktas en tē koilia tou kētous houtōs ho Huios tou anthrōpou estai treis hēmeras kai treis nyktas en tē kardia tēs gēs — NA/TR · 40

The men of Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now [One] greater than Jonah is here.

The Queen of [the] South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now [One] greater than Solomon is here.

An Unclean Spirit Returns

- When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through arid places seeking rest and vvv does not find [it].
δὲ Ὅταν τὸ ἀκάθαρτον πνεῦμα ἐξέλθῃ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου διέρχεται δι’ ἀνύδρων τόπων ζητοῦν ἀνάπαυσιν καὶ οὐχ εὑρίσκει de Hotan to akatharton pneuma exelthē apo tou anthrōpou dierchetai di’ anydrōn topōn zētoun anapausin kai ouch heuriskei — NA/TR · 43

Then it says, ‘I will return to the house vvv I left. On its return, it finds [the house] vacant, swept clean, and put in order.

Then it goes and brings with it… seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in [and] dwell there. And the final [plight] of that man is worse than the first. So… will it be with this wicked generation.

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers

While [Jesus] was still speaking… to the crowds, His mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to Him.
