Chapter 11

John’s Inquiry

1

After… Jesus had finished instructing His twelve disciples, He went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

Καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐτέλεσεν διατάσσων αὐτοῦ δώδεκα τοῖς μαθηταῖς μετέβη ἐκεῖθεν τοῦ διδάσκειν καὶ κηρύσσειν ἐν αὐτῶν ταῖς πόλεσιν Kai egeneto hote ho Iēsous etelesen diatassōn autou dōdeka tois mathētais metebē ekeithen tou didaskein kai kēryssein en autōn tais polesin — NA/TR · 1

Meanwhile John heard in prison [about] the works of Christ, [and] he sent his disciples

δὲ Ὁ Ἰωάννης ἀκούσας ἐν τῷ δεσμωτηρίῳ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Χριστοῦ πέμψας διὰ αὐτοῦ τῶν μαθητῶν de Ho Iōannēs akousas en tō desmōtēriō ta erga tou Christou pempsas dia autou tōn mathētōn — NA/TR · 2

to ask Him, “Are You the [One who] was to come, or should we look for someone else?

εἶπεν αὐτῷ εἶ Σὺ ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἢ προσδοκῶμεν ἕτερον eipen autō ei Sy ho erchomenos ē prosdokōmen heteron — NA/TR · 3

  • Jesus replied…, “Go [back] [and] report to John what you hear and see:

Καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πορευθέντες ἀπαγγείλατε Ἰωάννῃ ἃ ἀκούετε καὶ βλέπετε Kai ho Iēsous apokritheis eipen autois Poreuthentes apangeilate Iōannē ha akouete kai blepete — NA/TR · 4

[The] blind receive sight, [the] lame walk, [the] lepers are cleansed, [the] deaf hear, [the] dead are raised, and the good news is preached [to the] poor.

τυφλοὶ ἀναβλέπουσιν καὶ χωλοὶ περιπατοῦσιν λεπροὶ καθαρίζονται καὶ κωφοὶ ἀκούουσιν καὶ νεκροὶ ἐγείρονται καὶ εὐαγγελίζονται πτωχοὶ typhloi anablepousin kai chōloi peripatousin leproi katharizontai kai kōphoi akouousin kai nekroi egeirontai kai euangelizontai ptōchoi — NA/TR · 5

  • Blessed is the [one who] does not fall away… on account of Me.

καὶ μακάριός ἐστιν ὃς σκανδαλισθῇ ἐὰν μὴ ἐν ἐμοί kai makarios estin hos skandalisthē ean mē en emoi — NA/TR · 6

Jesus Testifies about John

  • As [John’s disciples] were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in [the] wind?

δὲ Τούτων πορευομένων ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἤρξατο λέγειν τοῖς ὄχλοις περὶ Ἰωάννου Τί ἐξήλθατε εἰς τὴν ἔρημον θεάσασθαι κάλαμον σαλευόμενον ὑπὸ ἀνέμου de Toutōn poreuomenōn ho Iēsous ērxato legein tois ochlois peri Iōannou Ti exēlthate eis tēn erēmon theasasthai kalamon saleuomenon hypo anemou — NA/TR · 7

Otherwise, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine [clothes]? Look, those who wear fine [clothing] are found in - kings’ palaces.

ἀλλὰ τί ἐξήλθατε ἰδεῖν ἄνθρωπον ἠμφιεσμένον ἐν μαλακοῖς ἰδοὺ οἱ τὰ φοροῦντες μαλακὰ εἰσίν ἐν τοῖς τῶν βασιλέων οἴκοις alla ti exēlthate idein anthrōpon ēmphiesmenon en malakois idou hoi ta phorountes malaka eisin en tois tōn basileōn oikois — NA/TR · 8

What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

τί ἀλλὰ ἐξήλθατε ἰδεῖν προφήτην ναί λέγω ὑμῖν καὶ περισσότερον προφήτου ti alla exēlthate idein prophētēn nai legō hymin kai perissoteron prophētou — NA/TR · 9

This is [the one] about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You…, who will prepare Your way before You.’

οὗτός ἐστιν περὶ οὗ γέγραπται Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω μου τὸν ἄγγελόν πρὸ σου προσώπου Ὃς κατασκευάσει σου τὴν ὁδόν ἔμπροσθέν σου houtos estin peri hou gegraptai Idou egō apostellō mou ton angelon pro sou prosōpou Hos kataskeuasei sou tēn hodon emprosthen sou — NA/TR · 10

Truly I tell you, among [those] born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν ἐγήγερται οὐκ μείζων Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ δὲ ὁ μικρότερος ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν ἐστιν μείζων αὐτοῦ Amēn legō hymin en gennētois gynaikōn egēgertai ouk meizōn Iōannou tou Baptistou de ho mikroteros en tē basileia tōn ouranōn estin meizōn autou — NA/TR · 11

  • From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subject to violence, and [the] violent lay claim to it.

δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν ἡμερῶν Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ ἕως ἄρτι ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν βιάζεται καὶ βιασταὶ ἁρπάζουσιν αὐτήν de apo tōn hēmerōn Iōannou tou Baptistou heōs arti hē basileia tōn ouranōn biazetai kai biastai harpazousin autēn — NA/TR · 12

For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.

γὰρ πάντες οἱ προφῆται καὶ ὁ νόμος ἐπροφήτευσαν ἕως Ἰωάννου gar pantes hoi prophētai kai ho nomos eprophēteusan heōs Iōannou — NA/TR · 13

And if you are willing to accept [it], he is [the] Elijah who was to come.

καὶ εἰ θέλετε δέξασθαι αὐτός ἐστιν Ἠλίας ὁ μέλλων ἔρχεσθαι kai ei thelete dexasthai autos estin Ēlias ho mellōn erchesthai — NA/TR · 14

He who has ears, let him hear.

Ὁ ἔχων ὦτα ἀκουέτω Ho echōn ōta akouetō — NA/TR · 15

  • To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

δὲ Τίνι ὁμοιώσω ταύτην τὴν γενεὰν ἐστὶν ὁμοία παιδίοις καθημένοις ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς ἃ προσφωνοῦντα τοῖς ἑτέροις de Tini homoiōsō tautēn tēn genean estin homoia paidiois kathēmenois en tais agorais ha prosphōnounta tois heterois — NA/TR · 16

‘- We played the flute for you, and vvv you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and vvv you did not mourn.

λέγουσιν Ηὐλήσαμεν ὑμῖν Καὶ οὐκ ὠρχήσασθε Ἐθρηνήσαμεν Καὶ οὐκ ἐκόψασθε legousin Ēulēsamen hymin Kai ouk ōrchēsasthe Ethrēnēsamen Kai ouk ekopsasthe — NA/TR · 17

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!

γὰρ Ἰωάννης Ἦλθεν μήτε ἐσθίων μήτε πίνων καὶ λέγουσιν ἔχει Δαιμόνιον gar Iōannēs Ēlthen mēte esthiōn mēte pinōn kai legousin echei Daimonion — NA/TR · 18

The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look [at this] glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners! But wisdom is vindicated by her actions.

ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἦλθεν ἐσθίων καὶ πίνων καὶ λέγουσιν Ἰδοὺ ἄνθρωπος φάγος καὶ οἰνοπότης φίλος τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν καὶ ἡ σοφία ἐδικαιώθη ἀπὸ αὐτῆς τῶν ἔργων ho Huios tou anthrōpou ēlthen esthiōn kai pinōn kai legousin Idou anthrōpos phagos kai oinopotēs philos telōnōn kai hamartōlōn kai hē sophia edikaiōthē apo autēs tōn ergōn — NA/TR · 19

Woe to the Unrepentant

Then [Jesus] began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles had been performed, because vvv they did not repent.

Τότε ἤρξατο ὀνειδίζειν τὰς πόλεις ἐν αἷς αἱ πλεῖσται αὐτοῦ δυνάμεις ἐγένοντο ὅτι οὐ μετενόησαν Tote ērxato oneidizein tas poleis en hais hai pleistai autou dynameis egenonto hoti ou metenoēsan — NA/TR · 20

“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles [that] were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

Οὐαί σοι Χοραζίν οὐαί σοι Βηθσαϊδά ὅτι εἰ αἱ δυνάμεις αἱ γενόμεναι ἐν ὑμῖν ἐγένοντο ἐν Τύρῳ καὶ Σιδῶνι ἂν μετενόησαν πάλαι ἐν σάκκῳ καὶ σποδῷ Ouai soi Chorazin ouai soi Bēthsaida hoti ei hai dynameis hai genomenai en hymin egenonto en Tyrō kai Sidōni an metenoēsan palai en sakkō kai spodō — NA/TR · 21

But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on [the] day of judgment than for you.

πλὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἔσται ἀνεκτότερον Τύρῳ καὶ Σιδῶνι ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως ἢ ὑμῖν plēn legō hymin estai anektoteron Tyrō kai Sidōni en hēmera kriseōs ē hymin — NA/TR · 22

And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? [No], you will be brought down to Hades! For if the miracles [that] were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, vvv it would have remained to this day.

Καὶ σύ Καφαρναούμ μὴ ὑψωθήσῃ ἕως οὐρανοῦ καταβήσῃ ἕως ᾅδου ὅτι εἰ αἱ δυνάμεις αἱ γενόμεναι ἐν σοί ἐγενήθησαν ἐν Σοδόμοις ἂν ἔμεινεν μέχρι τῆς σήμερον Kai sy Kapharnaoum mē hypsōthēsē heōs ouranou katabēsē heōs hadou hoti ei hai dynameis hai genomenai en soi egenēthēsan en Sodomois an emeinen mechri tēs sēmeron — NA/TR · 23

But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on [the] day of judgment than for you.

Rest for the Weary

At that time Jesus vvv declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from [the] wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.

Ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Ἐξομολογοῦμαί σοι Πάτερ Κύριε τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τῆς γῆς ὅτι ἔκρυψας ταῦτα ἀπὸ σοφῶν καὶ συνετῶν καὶ ἀπεκάλυψας αὐτὰ νηπίοις En ekeinō tō kairō ho Iēsous apokritheis eipen Exomologoumai soi Pater Kyrie tou ouranou kai tēs gēs hoti ekrypsas tauta apo sophōn kai synetōn kai apekalypsas auta nēpiois — NA/TR · 25

Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight…

ναί ὁ Πατήρ ὅτι οὕτως ἐγένετο εὐδοκία ἔμπροσθέν σου nai ho Patēr hoti houtōs egeneto eudokia emprosthen sou — NA/TR · 26

27

All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except… the Father, [and] [no one] knows the Father except… the Son and those to whom… the Son chooses to reveal [Him].

Πάντα παρεδόθη μοι ὑπὸ μου τοῦ Πατρός καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπιγινώσκει τὸν Υἱὸν εἰ μὴ ὁ Πατήρ οὐδὲ τις ἐπιγινώσκει τὸν Πατέρα εἰ μὴ ὁ Υἱὸς καὶ ᾧ ἐὰν ὁ Υἱὸς βούληται ἀποκαλύψαι Panta paredothē moi hypo mou tou Patros kai oudeis epiginōskei ton Huion ei mē ho Patēr oude tis epiginōskei ton Patera ei mē ho Huios kai hō ean ho Huios boulētai apokalypsai — NA/TR · 27

Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I vvv will give you rest.

Δεῦτε πρός με πάντες οἱ κοπιῶντες καὶ πεφορτισμένοι κἀγὼ ὑμᾶς ἀναπαύσω Deute pros me pantes hoi kopiōntes kai pephortismenoi kagō hymas anapausō — NA/TR · 28

Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble [in] heart, and you will find rest [for] your souls.

ἄρατε μου τὸν ζυγόν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς καὶ μάθετε ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ὅτι εἰμι πραΰς καὶ ταπεινὸς τῇ καρδίᾳ καὶ εὑρήσετε ἀνάπαυσιν ταῖς ὑμῶν ψυχαῖς arate mou ton zygon eph’ hymas kai mathete ap’ emou hoti eimi praus kai tapeinos tē kardia kai heurēsete anapausin tais hymōn psychais — NA/TR · 29

30

For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

γὰρ μου ὁ ζυγός χρηστὸς καὶ μου τὸ φορτίον ἐστιν ἐλαφρόν gar mou ho zygos chrēstos kai mou to phortion estin elaphron — NA/TR · 30
