Chapter 3
I Will Send My Messenger

“Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. Then the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple— the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight— see, He is coming,” says the LORD of Hosts.
𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤄 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤁𐤒𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤐𐤕𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤇𐤐𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕
הִנְנִ֤י שֹׁלֵחַ֙ מַלְאָכִ֔י וּפִנָּה־ דֶ֖רֶךְ לְפָנָ֑י הָאָד֣וֹן׀ אֲשֶׁר־ אַתֶּ֣ם מְבַקְשִׁ֗ים וּפִתְאֹם֩ יָב֨וֹא אֶל־ הֵיכָל֜וֹ וּמַלְאַ֨ךְ הַבְּרִ֜ית אֲשֶׁר־ אַתֶּ֤ם חֲפֵצִים֙ הִנֵּה־ בָ֔א אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ hin·nî šō·lê·aḥ mal·’ā·ḵî ū·p̄in·nāh- ḏe·reḵ lə·p̄ā·nāy hā·’ā·ḏō·wn ’ă·šer- ’at·tem mə·ḇaq·šîm ū·p̄iṯ·’ōm yā·ḇō·w ’el- hê·ḵā·lōw ū·mal·’aḵ hab·bə·rîṯ ’ă·šer- ’at·tem ḥă·p̄ê·ṣîm hin·nêh- ḇā ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 1

But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He will be like a refiner’s fire, [like] a launderer’s soap.

וּמִ֤י מְכַלְכֵּל֙ אֶת־ י֣וֹם בּוֹא֔וֹ וּמִ֥י הָעֹמֵ֖ד בְּהֵרָֽאוֹת֑וֹ כִּֽי־ הוּא֙ מְצָרֵ֔ף כְּאֵ֣שׁ מְכַבְּסִֽים׃ וּכְבֹרִ֖ית ū·mî mə·ḵal·kêl ’eṯ- yō·wm bō·w·’ōw ū·mî hā·‘ō·mêḏ bə·hê·rā·’ō·w·ṯōw kî- hū mə·ṣā·rêp̄ kə·’êš mə·ḵab·bə·sîm ū·ḵə·ḇō·rîṯ — WLC · 2

And He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver… Then they will present offerings to the LORD in righteousness.
𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤐 𐤅𐤌𐤈𐤄𐤓 𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤅𐤈𐤄𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤅𐤉 𐤅𐤆𐤒𐤒 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤅𐤊𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤂𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤄
וְיָשַׁ֨ב מְצָרֵ֤ף וּמְטַהֵר֙ כֶּ֔סֶף וְטִהַ֤ר אֶת־ בְּנֵֽי־ לֵוִי֙ וְזִקַּ֣ק אֹתָ֔ם כַּזָּהָ֖ב וְכַכָּ֑סֶף וְהָיוּ֙ מַגִּישֵׁ֥י מִנְחָ֖ה לַֽיהוָ֔ה בִּצְדָקָֽה׃ wə·yā·šaḇ mə·ṣā·rêp̄ ū·mə·ṭa·hêr ke·sep̄ wə·ṭi·har ’eṯ- bə·nê- lê·wî wə·ziq·qaq ’ō·ṯām kaz·zā·hāḇ wə·ḵak·kā·sep̄ wə·hā·yū mag·gî·šê min·ḥāh Yah·weh biṣ·ḏā·qāh — WLC · 3

Then the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will please the LORD, as in days of old and years gone by.

מִנְחַ֥ת יְהוּדָ֖ה וִירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְעָֽרְבָה֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה כִּימֵ֣י עוֹלָ֔ם וּכְשָׁנִ֖ים קַדְמֹנִיּֽוֹת׃ min·ḥaṯ yə·hū·ḏāh wî·rū·šā·lim wə·‘ā·rə·ḇāh Yah·weh kî·mê ‘ō·w·lām ū·ḵə·šā·nîm qaḏ·mō·nî·yō·wṯ — WLC · 4

“Then I will draw near to you for judgment. And I will be a swift witness against sorcerers and adulterers and perjurers, against oppressors of the widowed and fatherless, and against those who defraud laborers of their wages and deny justice to the foreigner but do not fear Me,” says the LORD of Hosts.

וְקָרַבְתִּ֣י אֲלֵיכֶם֮ לַמִּשְׁפָּט֒ וְהָיִ֣יתִי׀ מְמַהֵ֗ר עֵ֣ד בַּֽמְכַשְּׁפִים֙ וּבַמְנָ֣אֲפִ֔ים וּבַנִּשְׁבָּעִ֖ים לַשָּׁ֑קֶר וּבְעֹשְׁקֵ֣י אַלְמָנָ֨ה וְיָת֤וֹם שְׂכַר־ שָׂ֠כִיר וּמַטֵּי־ גֵר֙ וְלֹ֣א יְרֵא֔וּנִי אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ wə·qā·raḇ·tî ’ă·lê·ḵem lam·miš·pāṭ wə·hā·yî·ṯî mə·ma·hêr ‘êḏ bam·ḵaš·šə·p̄îm ū·ḇam·nā·’ă·p̄îm ū·ḇan·niš·bā·‘îm laš·šā·qer ū·ḇə·‘ō·šə·qê ’al·mā·nāh wə·yā·ṯō·wm śə·ḵa·r·śā- śā·k̲îr ū·maṭ·ṭê- ḡêr wə·lō yə·rê·’ū·nî ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 5
Robbing God

“Because I, the LORD, do not change, you descendants of Jacob have not been destroyed.
𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤕𐤌
כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה לֹ֣א שָׁנִ֑יתִי וְאַתֶּ֥ם בְּנֵֽי־ יַעֲקֹ֖ב לֹ֥א כְלִיתֶֽם׃ kî ’ă·nî Yah·weh lō šā·nî·ṯî wə·’at·tem bə·nê- ya·‘ă·qōḇ lō ḵə·lî·ṯem — WLC · 6

Yet from the days of your fathers, you have turned away from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Hosts. “But you ask, ‘How can we return?’

לְמִימֵ֨י אֲבֹתֵיכֶ֜ם סַרְתֶּ֤ם מֵֽחֻקַּי֙ וְלֹ֣א שְׁמַרְתֶּ֔ם שׁ֤וּבוּ אֵלַי֙ וְאָשׁ֣וּבָה אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם בַּמֶּ֥ה נָשֽׁוּב׃ lə·mî·mê ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem sar·tem mê·ḥuq·qay wə·lō šə·mar·tem šū·ḇū ’ê·lay wə·’ā·šū·ḇāh ’ă·lê·ḵem ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ wa·’ă·mar·tem bam·meh nā·šūḇ — WLC · 7

Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you ask, ‘How do we rob You?’ In tithes and offerings.

אָדָ֜ם הֲיִקְבַּ֨ע אֱלֹהִ֗ים כִּ֤י אַתֶּם֙ קֹבְעִ֣ים אֹתִ֔י וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם בַּמֶּ֣ה קְבַעֲנ֑וּךָ הַֽמַּעֲשֵׂ֖ר וְהַתְּרוּמָֽה׃ ’ā·ḏām hă·yiq·ba‘ ’ĕ·lō·hîm kî ’at·tem qō·ḇə·‘îm ’ō·ṯî wa·’ă·mar·tem bam·meh qə·ḇa·‘ă·nū·ḵā ham·ma·‘ă·śêr wə·hat·tə·rū·māh — WLC · 8

You are cursed with a curse, yet you— the whole nation— are still robbing Me.

אַתֶּ֣ם נֵֽאָרִ֔ים וְאֹתִ֖י בַּמְּאֵרָה֙ אַתֶּ֣ם כֻּלּֽוֹ׃ הַגּ֖וֹי קֹבְעִ֑ים ’at·tem nê·’ā·rîm wə·’ō·ṯî bam·mə·’ê·rāh ’at·tem kul·lōw hag·gō·w qō·ḇə·‘îm — WLC · 9

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse…, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me… in this,” says the LORD of Hosts. “See if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you blessing… without measure.

הָבִ֨יאוּ אֶת־ כָּל־ הַֽמַּעֲשֵׂ֜ר אֶל־ בֵּ֣ית הָאוֹצָ֗ר וִיהִ֥י טֶ֙רֶף֙ בְּבֵיתִ֔י וּבְחָנ֤וּנִי נָא֙ בָּזֹ֔את אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת אִם־ לֹ֧א אֶפְתַּ֣ח לָכֶ֗ם אֵ֚ת אֲרֻבּ֣וֹת הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וַהֲרִיקֹתִ֥י לָכֶ֛ם בְּרָכָ֖ה עַד־ בְּלִי־ דָֽי׃ hā·ḇî·’ū ’eṯ- kāl- ham·ma·‘ă·śêr ’el- bêṯ hā·’ō·w·ṣār wî·hî ṭe·rep̄ bə·ḇê·ṯî ū·ḇə·ḥā·nū·nî nā bā·zōṯ ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’im- lō ’ep̄·taḥ lā·ḵem ’êṯ ’ă·rub·bō·wṯ haš·šā·ma·yim wa·hă·rî·qō·ṯî lā·ḵem bə·rā·ḵāh ‘aḏ- bə·lî- ḏāy — WLC · 10

I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your land, and the vine in your field will not fail to produce fruit says the LORD of Hosts.

וְגָעַרְתִּ֤י בָּֽאֹכֵ֔ל לָכֶם֙ וְלֹֽא־ יַשְׁחִ֥ת לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־ פְּרִ֣י הָאֲדָמָ֑ה הַגֶּ֙פֶן֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה וְלֹא־ תְשַׁכֵּ֨ל לָכֶ֤ם אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ wə·ḡā·‘ar·tî bā·’ō·ḵêl lā·ḵem wə·lō- yaš·ḥiṯ lā·ḵem ’eṯ- pə·rî hā·’ă·ḏā·māh hag·ge·p̄en baś·śā·ḏeh wə·lō- ṯə·šak·kêl lā·ḵem ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 11

“Then all the nations will call you blessed -, for you will be a land of delight,” says the LORD of Hosts.

The Book of Remembrance

“Your words against Me have been harsh,” says the LORD. “Yet you ask, ‘What have we spoken against You?’

דִּבְרֵיכֶ֖ם עָלַ֛י חָזְק֥וּ אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֕ם מַה־ נִּדְבַּ֖רְנוּ עָלֶֽיךָ׃ diḇ·rê·ḵem ‘ā·lay ḥā·zə·qū ’ā·mar Yah·weh wa·’ă·mar·tem mah- niḏ·bar·nū ‘ā·le·ḵā — WLC · 13

You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. What have we gained… by keeping His requirements… and walking mournfully before the LORD of Hosts?
𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤑𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤍𐤅 𐤒𐤃𐤓𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕
אֲמַרְתֶּ֕ם שָׁ֖וְא עֲבֹ֣ד אֱלֹהִ֑ים וּמַה־ בֶּ֗צַע כִּ֤י שָׁמַ֙רְנוּ֙ מִשְׁמַרְתּ֔וֹ וְכִ֤י הָלַ֙כְנוּ֙ קְדֹ֣רַנִּ֔ית מִפְּנֵ֖י יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ ’ă·mar·tem šāw ‘ă·ḇōḏ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ū·mah- be·ṣa‘ kî šā·mar·nū miš·mar·tōw wə·ḵî hā·laḵ·nū qə·ḏō·ran·nîṯ mip·pə·nê Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 14

So now we call the arrogant blessed. Not only do evildoers… prosper, they even test God and escape.’”

וְעַתָּ֕ה אֲנַ֖חְנוּ זֵדִ֑ים מְאַשְּׁרִ֣ים גַּם־ עֹשֵׂ֣י רִשְׁעָ֔ה נִבְנוּ֙ גַּ֧ם בָּחֲנ֛וּ אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַיִּמָּלֵֽטוּ׃ wə·‘at·tāh ’ă·naḥ·nū zê·ḏîm mə·’aš·šə·rîm gam- ‘ō·śê riš·‘āh niḇ·nū gam bā·ḥă·nū ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yim·mā·lê·ṭū — WLC · 15

At that time those who feared the LORD spoke with one… another, and the LORD listened and heard [them]. So a scroll of remembrance was written before Him regarding those who feared the LORD and honored His name.

“They will be Mine,” says the LORD of Hosts, “on the day when I prepare My treasured possession. And I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him.

So you will again distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not…”
