Chapter 1

The LORD’s Love for Israel

1

[This is] the burden of the word of the LORD to Israel through Malachi:

𐤌𐤔𐤀 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉

מַשָּׂ֥א דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל בְּיַ֖ד מַלְאָכִֽי׃ maś·śā ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh ’el- yiś·rā·’êl bə·yaḏ mal·’ā·ḵîWLC · 1

“I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you ask, “How have You loved us?” “Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the LORD. “Yet Jacob I have loved -,

אָהַ֤בְתִּי אֶתְכֶם֙ אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם בַּמָּ֣ה אֲהַבְתָּ֑נוּ הֲלוֹא־ עֵשָׂ֤ו לְיַֽעֲקֹב֙ אָ֨ח נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה יַעֲקֹֽב׃ וָאֹהַ֖ב אֶֽת־ ’ā·haḇ·tî ’eṯ·ḵem ’ā·mar Yah·weh wa·’ă·mar·tem bam·māh ’ă·haḇ·tā·nū hă·lō·w- ‘ê·śāw lə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ ’āḥ nə·’um- Yah·weh ya·‘ă·qōḇ wā·’ō·haḇ ’eṯ-WLC · 2

but Esau I have hated, and I have made his mountains a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.

𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤔𐤍𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤋𐤕𐤍𐤅𐤕

וְאֶת־ עֵשָׂ֖ו שָׂנֵ֑אתִי וָאָשִׂ֤ים אֶת־ הָרָיו֙ שְׁמָמָ֔ה וְאֶת־ נַחֲלָת֖וֹ מִדְבָּֽר׃ לְתַנּ֥וֹת wə·’eṯ- ‘ê·śāw śā·nê·ṯî wā·’ā·śîm ’eṯ- hā·rāw šə·mā·māh wə·’eṯ- na·ḥă·lā·ṯōw miḏ·bār lə·ṯan·nō·wṯWLC · 3

Though Edom may say, “We have been devastated, but we will rebuild… the ruins,” this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called the Land of Wickedness, and a people with whom the LORD is indignant forever…

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤌 𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤓𐤔𐤔𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤅𐤎 𐤅𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤋 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤆𐤏𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌

כִּֽי־ אֱד֜וֹם תֹאמַ֨ר רֻשַּׁ֗שְׁנוּ וְנָשׁוּב֙ וְנִבְנֶ֣ה חֳרָב֔וֹת כֹּ֤ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אָמַר֙ הֵ֥מָּה יִבְנ֖וּ וַאֲנִ֣י אֶהֱר֑וֹס וְקָרְא֤וּ לָהֶם֙ גְּב֣וּל רִשְׁעָ֔ה וְהָעָ֛ם אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֖ה זָעַ֥ם עַד־ עוֹלָֽם׃ kî- ’ĕ·ḏō·wm ṯō·mar ruš·šaš·nū wə·nā·šūḇ wə·niḇ·neh ḥo·rā·ḇō·wṯ kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar hêm·māh yiḇ·nū wa·’ă·nî ’e·hĕ·rō·ws wə·qā·rə·’ū lā·hem gə·ḇūl riš·‘āh wə·hā·‘ām ’ă·šer- Yah·weh zā·‘am ‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lāmWLC · 4

You will see this with your own eyes, and you yourselves will say, ‘The LORD is great— even beyond the borders of Israel.’”

תִּרְאֶ֑ינָה וְעֵינֵיכֶ֖ם וְאַתֶּ֤ם תֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ יְהוָ֔ה יִגְדַּ֣ל מֵעַ֖ל לִגְב֥וּל יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ tir·’e·nāh wə·‘ê·nê·ḵem wə·’at·tem tō·mə·rū Yah·weh yiḡ·dal mê·‘al liḡ·ḇūl yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 5

The Polluted Offerings

“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. But if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is your fear of Me?” says the LORD of Hosts to you priests who despise My name. “But you ask, ‘How have we despised Your name?’

𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤊𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤁 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤁 𐤀𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤅𐤆𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤆𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤊

בֵּ֛ן יְכַבֵּ֥ד אָ֖ב וְעֶ֣בֶד אֲדֹנָ֑יו וְאִם־ אָ֣נִי אָ֣ב אַיֵּ֣ה כְבוֹדִ֡י וְאִם־ אָנִי֩ אֲדוֹנִ֣ים אַיֵּ֨ה מוֹרָאִ֜י אָמַ֣ר׀ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֗וֹת לָכֶם֙ הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ בּוֹזֵ֣י שְׁמִ֔י וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֕ם בַּמֶּ֥ה בָזִ֖ינוּ אֶת־ שְׁמֶֽךָ׃ bên yə·ḵab·bêḏ ’āḇ wə·‘e·ḇeḏ ’ă·ḏō·nāw wə·’im- ’ā·nî ’āḇ ’ay·yêh ḵə·ḇō·w·ḏî wə·’im- ’ā·nî ’ă·ḏō·w·nîm ’ay·yêh mō·w·rā·’î ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ lā·ḵem hak·kō·hă·nîm bō·w·zê šə·mî wa·’ă·mar·tem bam·meh ḇā·zî·nū ’eṯ- šə·me·ḵāWLC · 6

By presenting defiled food on My altar. But you ask, ‘How have we defiled You By saying that the table of the LORD is contemptible…

𐤌𐤂𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤂𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤄 𐤂𐤀𐤋𐤍𐤅𐤊 𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤊𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤁𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤀

מַגִּישִׁ֤ים מְגֹאָ֔ל לֶ֣חֶם עַֽל־ מִזְבְּחִי֙ וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם בַּמֶּ֣ה גֵֽאַלְנ֑וּךָ בֶּאֱמָרְכֶ֕ם שֻׁלְחַ֥ן יְהוָ֖ה נִבְזֶ֥ה הֽוּא׃ mag·gî·šîm mə·ḡō·’āl le·ḥem ‘al- miz·bə·ḥî wa·’ă·mar·tem bam·meh ḡê·’al·nū·ḵā be·’ĕ·mā·rə·ḵem šul·ḥan Yah·weh niḇ·zeh hūWLC · 7

When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is it not wrong? And when you present the lame and sick [ones], is it not wrong? Try offering them… to your governor! Would he be pleased with you or show you favor…?” asks the LORD of Hosts.

𐤅𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤂𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤓𐤏 𐤅𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤂𐤉𐤔𐤅 𐤐𐤎𐤇 𐤅𐤇𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤓𐤏 𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤄𐤅 𐤍𐤀 𐤋𐤐𐤇𐤕𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤑𐤊 𐤀𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕

וְכִֽי־ תַגִּשׁ֨וּן עִוֵּ֤ר לִזְבֹּ֙חַ֙ אֵ֣ין רָ֔ע וְכִ֥י תַגִּ֛ישׁוּ פִּסֵּ֥חַ וְחֹלֶ֖ה אֵ֣ין רָ֑ע הַקְרִיבֵ֨הוּ נָ֜א לְפֶחָתֶ֗ךָ הֲיִּרְצְךָ֙ א֚וֹ הֲיִשָּׂ֣א פָנֶ֔יךָ אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ wə·ḵî- ṯag·gi·šūn ‘iw·wêr liz·bō·aḥ ’ên rā‘ wə·ḵî ṯag·gî·šū pis·sê·aḥ wə·ḥō·leh ’ên rā‘ haq·rî·ḇê·hū nā lə·p̄e·ḥā·ṯe·ḵā h·yir·ṣə·ḵå̄ ’ōw hă·yiś·śā p̄ā·ne·ḵā ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯWLC · 8

“But {ask} now for God’s favor… Will He be gracious? Since this has come from your hands, will He show you favor…?” asks the LORD of Hosts.

𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤋𐤅 𐤍𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤍𐤍𐤅 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕

וְעַתָּ֛ה אֵ֖ל חַלּוּ־ נָ֥א פְנֵי־ וִֽיחָנֵ֑נוּ זֹּ֔את הָ֣יְתָה מִכֶּם֙ מִיֶּדְכֶם֙ הֲיִשָּׂ֤א פָּנִ֔ים אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ wə·‘at·tāh ’êl ḥal·lū- nā p̄ə·nê- wī·ḥå̄·nē·nū zōṯ hā·yə·ṯāh mik·kem mî·yeḏ·ḵem hă·yiś·śā pā·nîm ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯWLC · 9

“Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would no longer kindle useless fires on My altar! I take no pleasure in you,” says the LORD of Hosts, “and I will accept no offering from your hands.

𐤌𐤉 𐤂𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤂𐤓 𐤃𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤀𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤇𐤍𐤌 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤉 𐤇𐤐𐤑 𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤊𐤌

מִ֤י גַם־ בָּכֶם֙ וְיִסְגֹּ֣ר דְּלָתַ֔יִם וְלֹֽא־ תָאִ֥ירוּ חִנָּ֑ם מִזְבְּחִ֖י אֵֽין־ לִ֨י חֵ֜פֶץ בָּכֶ֗ם אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אֶרְצֶ֥ה לֹֽא־ וּמִנְחָ֖ה מִיֶּדְכֶֽם׃ mî ḡam- bā·ḵem wə·yis·gōr də·lā·ṯa·yim wə·lō- ṯā·’î·rū ḥin·nām miz·bə·ḥî ’ên- lî ḥê·p̄eṣ bā·ḵem ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’er·ṣeh lō- ū·min·ḥāh mî·yeḏ·ḵemWLC · 10

For My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets… In every place, incense and pure offerings [will be] presented in My name, because My name will be great among the nations,” says the LORD of Hosts.

𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤉 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤆𐤓𐤇 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤌𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤔 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤒𐤈𐤓 𐤈𐤄𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤄 𐤌𐤂𐤔 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤉 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕

כִּ֣י שְׁמִי֙ גָּד֤וֹל בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם מִמִּזְרַח־ וְעַד־ מְבוֹא֗וֹ שֶׁ֜מֶשׁ וּבְכָל־ מָק֗וֹם מֻקְטָ֥ר טְהוֹרָ֑ה וּמִנְחָ֣ה מֻגָּ֛שׁ לִשְׁמִ֖י כִּֽי־ שְׁמִי֙ גָד֤וֹל בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ kî šə·mî gā·ḏō·wl bag·gō·w·yim mim·miz·raḥ- wə·‘aḏ- mə·ḇō·w·’ōw še·meš ū·ḇə·ḵāl mā·qō·wm muq·ṭār ṭə·hō·w·rāh ū·min·ḥāh mug·gāš liš·mî kî- šə·mî ḡā·ḏō·wl bag·gō·w·yim ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯWLC · 11

“But you profane it when you say, ‘The table of the Lord is defiled, and [as for] its fruit, its food is contemptible.’

𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤊𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤂𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤍𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤍𐤁𐤆𐤄

וְאַתֶּ֖ם מְחַלְּלִ֣ים אוֹת֑וֹ בֶּאֱמָרְכֶ֗ם שֻׁלְחַ֤ן אֲדֹנָי֙ ה֔וּא מְגֹאָ֣ל וְנִיב֖וֹ אָכְלֽוֹ׃ נִבְזֶ֥ה wə·’at·tem mə·ḥal·lə·lîm ’ō·w·ṯōw be·’ĕ·mā·rə·ḵem šul·ḥan ’ă·ḏō·nāy hū mə·ḡō·’āl wə·nî·ḇōw ’ā·ḵə·lōw niḇ·zehWLC · 12

You also say: ‘Oh, what a nuisance!’ And you turn up your nose at it,” says the LORD of Hosts. “You bring offerings [that are] stolen, lame, or sick Should I accept these from your hands?” asks the LORD.

𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤕𐤋𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤇𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤄 𐤂𐤆𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤐𐤎𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤎

וַאֲמַרְתֶּם֩ הִנֵּ֨ה מַתְּלָאָ֜ה וְהִפַּחְתֶּ֣ם אוֹת֗וֹ אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת וַהֲבֵאתֶ֣ם הַמִּנְחָ֑ה גָּז֗וּל וְאֶת־ הַפִּסֵּ֙חַ֙ וְאֶת־ הַ֣חוֹלֶ֔ה וַהֲבֵאתֶ֖ם אֶת־ הַאֶרְצֶ֥ה אוֹתָ֛הּ מִיֶּדְכֶ֖ם אָמַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃ס wa·’ă·mar·tem hin·nêh mat·tə·lā·’āh wə·hip·paḥ·tem ’ō·w·ṯōw ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ wa·hă·ḇê·ṯem ham·min·ḥāh gā·zūl wə·’eṯ- hap·pis·sê·aḥ wə·’eṯ- ha·ḥō·w·leh wa·hă·ḇê·ṯem ’eṯ- ha·’er·ṣeh ’ō·w·ṯāh mî·yeḏ·ḵem ’ā·mar Yah·wehWLC · 13

“But cursed [is] the deceiver who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but sacrifices a defective [animal] to the Lord. For I am a great King,” says the LORD of Hosts, “and My name [is to be] feared among the nations.

𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤓 𐤍𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔 𐤆𐤊𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤃𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤃𐤓 𐤅𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤌𐤔𐤇𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤉 𐤍𐤅𐤓𐤀 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌

וְאָר֣וּר נוֹכֵ֗ל וְיֵ֤שׁ זָכָ֔ר בְּעֶדְרוֹ֙ וְנֹדֵ֛ר וְזֹבֵ֥חַ מָשְׁחָ֖ת לַֽאדֹנָ֑י כִּי֩ אָ֗נִי גָּד֜וֹל מֶ֨לֶךְ אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת וּשְׁמִ֖י נוֹרָ֥א בַגּוֹיִֽם׃ wə·’ā·rūr nō·w·ḵêl wə·yêš zā·ḵār bə·‘eḏ·rōw wə·nō·ḏêr wə·zō·ḇê·aḥ mā·šə·ḥāṯ la·ḏō·nāy kî ’ā·nî gā·ḏō·wl me·leḵ ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ū·šə·mî nō·w·rā ḇag·gō·w·yimWLC · 14
