Chapter 6
The Vision of the Four Chariots
1
And again I lifted up my eyes and saw… four chariots coming out from between two mountains— mountains… of bronze.

וָאָשֻׁ֗ב וָאֶשָּׂ֤א עֵינַי֙ וָֽאֶרְאֶ֔ה וְהִנֵּ֨ה אַרְבַּ֤ע מַרְכָּבוֹת֙ יֹֽצְא֔וֹת מִבֵּ֖ין שְׁנֵ֣י הֶֽהָרִ֑ים וְהֶהָרִ֖ים הָרֵ֥י נְחֹֽשֶׁת׃ wā·’ā·šuḇ wā·’eś·śā ‘ê·nay wā·’er·’eh wə·hin·nêh ’ar·ba‘ mar·kā·ḇō·wṯ yō·ṣə·’ō·wṯ mib·bên šə·nê he·hā·rîm wə·he·hā·rîm hā·rê nə·ḥō·šeṯ — WLC · 1

The first chariot had red horses, the second black horses,

הָרִֽאשֹׁנָ֖ה בַּמֶּרְכָּבָ֥ה אֲדֻמִּ֑ים סוּסִ֣ים הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית וּבַמֶּרְכָּבָ֥ה שְׁחֹרִֽים׃ סוּסִ֥ים hā·ri·šō·nāh bam·mer·kā·ḇāh ’ă·ḏum·mîm sū·sîm haš·šê·nîṯ ū·ḇam·mer·kā·ḇāh šə·ḥō·rîm sū·sîm — WLC · 2

the third white horses, and the fourth dappled horses— all of them strong.

הַשְּׁלִשִׁ֖ית וּבַמֶּרְכָּבָ֥ה לְבָנִ֑ים סוּסִ֣ים הָרְבִעִ֔ית וּבַמֶּרְכָּבָה֙ בְּרֻדִּ֖ים סוּסִ֥ים אֲמֻצִּֽים׃ haš·šə·li·šîṯ ū·ḇam·mer·kā·ḇāh lə·ḇā·nîm sū·sîm hā·rə·ḇi·‘îṯ ū·ḇam·mer·kā·ḇāh bə·rud·dîm sū·sîm ’ă·muṣ·ṣîm — WLC · 3

- So I inquired of the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these, my lord?”
𐤅𐤀𐤏𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤉 𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉
וָאַ֙עַן֙ וָֽאֹמַ֔ר אֶל־ הַמַּלְאָ֖ךְ הַדֹּבֵ֣ר בִּ֑י מָה־ אֵ֖לֶּה אֲדֹנִֽי׃ wā·’a·‘an wā·’ō·mar ’el- ham·mal·’āḵ had·dō·ḇêr bî māh- ’êl·leh ’ă·ḏō·nî — WLC · 4

And the angel told me, “These are the four spirits of heaven, going forth from [their] station before the Lord of all the earth.
𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 𐤓𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤄𐤕𐤉𐤑𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑
וַיַּ֥עַן הַמַּלְאָ֖ךְ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֑י אֵ֗לֶּה אַרְבַּע֙ רֻח֣וֹת הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם יוֹצְא֕וֹת מֵֽהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב עַל־ אֲד֥וֹן כָּל־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ way·ya·‘an ham·mal·’āḵ way·yō·mer ’ê·lāy ’êl·leh ’ar·ba‘ ru·ḥō·wṯ haš·šā·ma·yim yō·wṣ·’ō·wṯ mê·hiṯ·yaṣ·ṣêḇ ‘al- ’ă·ḏō·wn kāl- hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 5

The one with the black horses is going toward the land of the north, [the one with] the white [horses] toward [the west], and [the one with] the dappled [horses] toward the south.”

אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֞הּ הַשְּׁחֹרִ֗ים הַסּוּסִ֣ים יֹֽצְאִים֙ אֶל־ אֶ֣רֶץ צָפ֔וֹן וְהַלְּבָנִ֔ים יָצְא֖וּ אֶל־ אַֽחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם וְהַ֨בְּרֻדִּ֔ים יָצְא֖וּ אֶל־ אֶ֥רֶץ הַתֵּימָֽן׃ ’ă·šer- bāh haš·šə·ḥō·rîm has·sū·sîm yō·ṣə·’îm ’el- ’e·reṣ ṣā·p̄ō·wn wə·hal·lə·ḇā·nîm yā·ṣə·’ū ’el- ’a·ḥă·rê·hem wə·hab·bə·rud·dîm yā·ṣə·’ū ’el- ’e·reṣ hat·tê·mān — WLC · 6

As the strong [horses] went out, they were eager to go [and] patrol the earth; and [the LORD] said, “Go [and] patrol the earth.” So they patrolled the earth.

וְהָאֲמֻצִּ֣ים יָצְא֗וּ וַיְבַקְשׁוּ֙ לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ לְהִתְהַלֵּ֣ך בָּאָ֔רֶץ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לְכ֖וּ הִתְהַלְּכ֣וּ בָאָ֑רֶץ וַתִּתְהַלַּ֖כְנָה בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ wə·hā·’ă·muṣ·ṣîm yā·ṣə·’ū way·ḇaq·šū lā·le·ḵeṯ lə·hiṯ·hal·lēḵ bā·’ā·reṣ way·yō·mer lə·ḵū hiṯ·hal·lə·ḵū ḇā·’ā·reṣ wat·tiṯ·hal·laḵ·nāh bā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 7

Then [the LORD] summoned me… and said, “Behold, those going… to the land of the north have given rest to My Spirit in the land of the north.”
𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤏𐤒 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤇𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤍𐤎
וַיַּזְעֵ֣ק אֹתִ֔י וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר לֵאמֹ֑ר רְאֵ֗ה הַיּֽוֹצְאִים֙ אֶל־ אֵלַ֖י אֶ֣רֶץ צָפ֔וֹן הֵנִ֥יחוּ אֶת־ רוּחִ֖י בְּאֶ֥רֶץ צָפֽוֹן׃ס way·yaz·‘êq ’ō·ṯî way·ḏab·bêr lê·mōr rə·’êh hay·yō·wṣ·’îm ’el- ’ê·lay ’e·reṣ ṣā·p̄ō·wn hê·nî·ḥū ’eṯ- rū·ḥî bə·’e·reṣ ṣā·p̄ō·wn — WLC · 8
The Crown and the Temple

The word of the LORD also came to me, saying,
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 9

“Take an offering from the exiles— from Heldai,… Tobijah,… and Jedaiah, who have arrived from Babylon— and go that same day to the house of Josiah son of Zephaniah.
𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤇 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤇𐤋𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤑𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄
לָק֙וֹחַ֙ מֵאֵ֣ת הַגּוֹלָ֔ה מֵחֶלְדַּ֕י וּמֵאֵ֥ת טוֹבִיָּ֖ה וּמֵאֵ֣ת יְדַֽעְיָ֑ה אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֖אוּ מִבָּבֶֽל׃ וּבָאתָ֤ אַתָּה֙ וּבָ֗אתָ הַה֔וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם בֵּ֚ית יֹאשִׁיָּ֣ה בֶן־ צְפַנְיָ֔ה lā·qō·w·aḥ mê·’êṯ hag·gō·w·lāh mê·ḥel·day ū·mê·’êṯ ṭō·w·ḇî·yāh ū·mê·’êṯ yə·ḏa‘·yāh ’ă·šer- bā·’ū mib·bā·ḇel ū·ḇā·ṯā ’at·tāh ū·ḇā·ṯā ha·hū bay·yō·wm bêṯ yō·šî·yāh ḇen- ṣə·p̄an·yāh — WLC · 10

Take silver and gold, make an [ornate] crown, and set [it] on the head of the high priest, Joshua son of Jehozadak.
𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤅𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤏𐤈𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤒
וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ כֶֽסֶף־ וְזָהָ֖ב וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ עֲטָר֑וֹת וְשַׂמְתָּ֗ בְּרֹ֛אשׁ הַגָּדֽוֹל׃ הַכֹּהֵ֥ן יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ בֶּן־ יְהוֹצָדָ֖ק wə·lā·qaḥ·tā ḵe·sep̄- wə·zā·hāḇ wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā ‘ă·ṭā·rō·wṯ wə·śam·tā bə·rōš hag·gā·ḏō·wl hak·kō·hên yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ben- yə·hō·w·ṣā·ḏāq — WLC · 11

And you are to tell him… that this is what… the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Here is a man whose name [is] the Branch, and He will branch out from His place and build the temple of the LORD.
𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤑𐤌𐤇 𐤉𐤑𐤌𐤇 𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
וְאָמַרְתָּ֤ אֵלָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֛ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּה־ אִ֞ישׁ שְׁמוֹ֙ צֶ֤מַח יִצְמָ֔ח וּמִתַּחְתָּ֣יו וּבָנָ֖ה אֶת־ הֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָֽהּ׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ê·lāw lê·mōr kōh ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ lê·mōr hin·nêh- ’îš šə·mōw ṣe·maḥ yiṣ·māḥ ū·mit·taḥ·tāw ū·ḇā·nāh ’eṯ- hê·ḵal ha·šēm — WLC · 12

Yes, He will build the temple of the LORD; He will be clothed in splendor and will sit on His throne and rule. And He will be a priest on His throne, and there will be peaceful counsel between the two.’

וְ֠הוּא יִבְנֶ֞ה אֶת־ הֵיכַ֤ל יְהוָה֙ וְהֽוּא־ יִשָּׂ֣א ה֔וֹד וְיָשַׁ֥ב עַל־ כִּסְא֑וֹ וּמָשַׁ֖ל וְהָיָ֤ה כֹהֵן֙ עַל־ כִּסְא֔וֹ תִּהְיֶ֖ה שָׁל֔וֹם וַעֲצַ֣ת בֵּ֥ין שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃ wə·hū yiḇ·neh ’eṯ- hê·ḵal Yah·weh wə·hū- yiś·śā hō·wḏ wə·yā·šaḇ ‘al- kis·’ōw ū·mā·šal wə·hā·yāh ḵō·hên ‘al- kis·’ōw tih·yeh šā·lō·wm wa·‘ă·ṣaṯ bên šə·nê·hem — WLC · 13

The crown will reside in the temple of the LORD as a memorial to Helem, Tobijah, Jedaiah, and the gracious son of Zephaniah.

וְהָעֲטָרֹ֗ת תִּֽהְיֶה֙ בְּהֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָֽה׃ לְזִכָּר֖וֹן לְחֵ֙לֶם֙ וּלְטוֹבִיָּ֣ה וְלִידַֽעְיָ֔ה וּלְחֵ֖ן בֶּן־ צְפַנְיָ֑ה wə·hā·‘ă·ṭā·rōṯ tih·yeh bə·hê·ḵal Yah·weh lə·zik·kā·rō·wn lə·ḥê·lem ū·lə·ṭō·w·ḇî·yāh wə·lî·ḏa‘·yāh ū·lə·ḥên ben- ṣə·p̄an·yāh — WLC · 14

Even those far away will come and build the temple of the LORD, and you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent Me to you. This will happen if you diligently obey… the voice of the LORD your God.”

וּרְחוֹקִ֣ים׀ יָבֹ֗אוּ וּבָנוּ֙ בְּהֵיכַ֣ל יְהוָ֔ה וִידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁלָחַ֣נִי אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם וְהָיָה֙ אִם־ שָׁמ֣וֹעַ תִּשְׁמְע֔וּן בְּק֖וֹל יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ס ū·rə·ḥō·w·qîm yā·ḇō·’ū ū·ḇā·nū bə·hê·ḵal Yah·weh wî·ḏa‘·tem kî- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ šə·lā·ḥa·nî ’ă·lê·ḵem wə·hā·yāh ’im- šā·mō·w·a‘ tiš·mə·‘ūn bə·qō·wl Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem — WLC · 15
