Chapter 1
Zephaniah Prophesies Judgment on Judah
1
[This is] the word of the LORD that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah:
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤑𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤊𐤅𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤍 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄
דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֣ה׀ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֗ה אֶל־ צְפַנְיָה֙ בֶּן־ כּוּשִׁ֣י בֶן־ גְּדַלְיָ֔ה בֶּן־ אֲמַרְיָ֖ה בֶּן־ חִזְקִיָּ֑ה בִּימֵ֛י יֹאשִׁיָּ֥הוּ בֶן־ אָמ֖וֹן מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה׃ də·ḇar- Yah·weh ’ă·šer hā·yāh ’el- ṣə·p̄an·yāh ben- kū·šî ḇen- gə·ḏal·yāh ben- ’ă·mar·yāh ben- ḥiz·qî·yāh bî·mê yō·šî·yā·hū ḇen- ’ā·mō·wn me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 1

“I will completely sweep away… everything from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD.

אָסֹ֨ף אָסֵ֜ף כֹּ֗ל מֵעַ֛ל פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָ֖ה נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ ’ā·sōp̄ ’ā·sêp̄ kōl mê·‘al pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 2

“I will sweep away man and beast; I will sweep away the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, and the idols with their wicked {worshipers}. I will cut off mankind from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD.
𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤏𐤅𐤐 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤃𐤂𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤊𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
אָסֵ֨ף אָדָ֜ם וּבְהֵמָ֗ה אָסֵ֤ף עוֹף־ הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ וּדְגֵ֣י הַיָּ֔ם וְהַמַּכְשֵׁל֖וֹת אֶת־ הָרְשָׁעִ֑ים וְהִכְרַתִּ֣י אֶת־ הָאָדָ֗ם מֵעַ֛ל פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָ֖ה נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ ’ā·sêp̄ ’ā·ḏām ū·ḇə·hê·māh ’ā·sêp̄ ‘ō·wp̄- haš·šā·ma·yim ū·ḏə·ḡê hay·yām wə·ham·maḵ·šê·lō·wṯ ’eṯ- hā·rə·šā·‘îm wə·hiḵ·rat·tî ’eṯ- hā·’ā·ḏām mê·‘al pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 3

“I will stretch out My hand against Judah and against all who dwell in Jerusalem. I will cut off from this place every remnant of Baal -, the names of the idolatrous and [pagan] priests—
𐤅𐤍𐤈𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤔𐤀𐤓 𐤄𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤊𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌
וְנָטִ֤יתִי יָדִי֙ עַל־ יְהוּדָ֔ה וְעַ֖ל כָּל־ יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְהִכְרַתִּ֞י מִן־ הַזֶּה֙ אֶת־ הַמָּק֤וֹם שְׁאָ֣ר הַבַּ֔עַל אֶת־ שֵׁ֥ם הַכְּמָרִ֖ים עִם־ הַכֹּהֲנִֽים׃ wə·nā·ṭî·ṯî yā·ḏî ‘al- yə·hū·ḏāh wə·‘al kāl- yō·wō·šə·ḇê yə·rū·šā·lim wə·hiḵ·rat·tî min- haz·zeh ’eṯ- ham·mā·qō·wm šə·’ār hab·ba·‘al ’eṯ- šêm hak·kə·mā·rîm ‘im- hak·kō·hă·nîm — WLC · 4

- those who bow on the rooftops {to worship} the host of heaven, those who bow down and swear by the LORD but also swear by Milcom,
𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤂𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤑𐤁𐤀 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤌
וְאֶת־ הַמִּשְׁתַּחֲוִ֥ים עַל־ הַגַּגּ֖וֹת לִצְבָ֣א הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וְאֶת־ הַמִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוִים֙ הַנִּשְׁבָּעִ֣ים לַֽיהוָ֔ה וְהַנִּשְׁבָּעִ֖ים בְּמַלְכָּֽם׃ wə·’eṯ- ham·miš·ta·ḥă·wîm ‘al- hag·gag·gō·wṯ liṣ·ḇā haš·šā·mā·yim wə·’eṯ- ham·miš·ta·ḥă·wîm han·niš·bā·‘îm Yah·weh wə·han·niš·bā·‘îm bə·mal·kām — WLC · 5

and those who turn back from [following] the LORD, neither seeking the LORD nor inquiring of Him.”

וְאֶת־ הַנְּסוֹגִ֖ים מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַאֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא־ בִקְשׁ֥וּ אֶת־ יְהוָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א דְרָשֻֽׁהוּ׃ wə·’eṯ- han·nə·sō·w·ḡîm mê·’a·ḥă·rê Yah·weh wa·’ă·šer lō- ḇiq·šū ’eṯ- Yah·weh wə·lō ḏə·rā·šu·hū — WLC · 6
The Day of the LORD

Be silent in the presence of the Lord GOD, for the Day of the LORD is near. Indeed, the LORD has prepared a sacrifice; He has consecrated His guests.
𐤄𐤎 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤒𐤓𐤅𐤁 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍 𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤔 𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤅
הַ֕ס מִפְּנֵ֖י אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה כִּ֤י י֣וֹם יְהוָ֔ה קָרוֹב֙ כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֛ה הֵכִ֧ין זֶ֖בַח הִקְדִּ֥ישׁ קְרֻאָֽיו׃ has mip·pə·nê ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh kî yō·wm Yah·weh qā·rō·wḇ kî- Yah·weh hê·ḵîn ze·ḇaḥ hiq·dîš qə·ru·’āw — WLC · 7

“- On the Day of the LORD’s sacrifice I will punish… the princes, the sons of the king, and all who are dressed in foreign apparel.
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤐𐤒𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤁𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤊𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤔
וְהָיָ֗ה בְּיוֹם֙ יְהוָ֔ה זֶ֣בַח וּפָקַדְתִּ֥י עַל־ הַשָּׂרִ֖ים וְעַל־ בְּנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְעַ֥ל כָּל־ הַלֹּבְשִׁ֖ים נָכְרִֽי׃ מַלְבּ֥וּשׁ wə·hā·yāh bə·yō·wm Yah·weh ze·ḇaḥ ū·p̄ā·qaḏ·tî ‘al- haś·śā·rîm wə·‘al- bə·nê ham·me·leḵ wə·‘al kāl- hal·lō·ḇə·šîm nā·ḵə·rî mal·būš — WLC · 8

On that day I will punish all who leap… over the threshold, who fill the house of their master with violence and deceit.
𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤐𐤒𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤂 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤐𐤕𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤇𐤌𐤎 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤌𐤄𐤎
הַה֑וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם וּפָקַדְתִּ֗י כָּל־ הַדּוֹלֵ֛ג עַל־ עַ֧ל הַמִּפְתָּ֖ן הַֽמְמַלְאִ֛ים בֵּ֥ית אֲדֹנֵיהֶ֖ם חָמָ֥ס וּמִרְמָֽה׃ס ha·hū bay·yō·wm ū·p̄ā·qaḏ·tî kāl- had·dō·w·lêḡ ‘al- ‘al ham·mip̄·tān ham·mal·’îm bêṯ ’ă·ḏō·nê·hem ḥā·mās ū·mir·māh — WLC · 9

On that day,” declares the LORD, “a cry… will go up from the Fish Gate, a wail from the Second District, and a loud crashing from the hills.
𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤑𐤏𐤒𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤃𐤂𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤄𐤂𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤕
הַה֜וּא בַיּ֨וֹם נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֗ה ק֤וֹל צְעָקָה֙ וְהָיָה֩ מִן־ הַדָּגִ֔ים מִשַּׁ֣עַר וִֽילָלָ֖ה הַמִּשְׁנֶ֑ה גָּד֖וֹל וְשֶׁ֥בֶר מֵהַגְּבָעֽוֹת׃ ha·hū ḇay·yō·wm nə·’um- Yah·weh qō·wl ṣə·‘ā·qāh wə·hā·yāh min- had·dā·ḡîm miš·ša·‘ar wî·lā·lāh ham·miš·neh gā·ḏō·wl wə·še·ḇer mê·hag·gə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ — WLC · 10

Wail, O dwellers of the Hollow, for all your merchants… will be silenced; all who weigh out silver will be cut off.
𐤄𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤊𐤕𐤔 𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤌 𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍 𐤍𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤍𐤈𐤉𐤋𐤉 𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤍𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤅
הֵילִ֖ילוּ יֹשְׁבֵ֣י הַמַּכְתֵּ֑שׁ כִּ֤י כָּל־ עַ֣ם כְּנַ֔עַן נִדְמָה֙ כָּל־ נְטִ֥ילֵי כָֽסֶף׃ נִכְרְת֖וּ hê·lî·lū yō·šə·ḇê ham·maḵ·têš kî kāl- ‘am kə·na·‘an niḏ·māh kāl- nə·ṭî·lê ḵā·sep̄ niḵ·rə·ṯū — WLC · 11

And at that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish the men settled in complacency, who say to themselves, ‘The LORD… will do nothing, either good or bad.’
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤐𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤐𐤒𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤒𐤐𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤁 𐤉𐤓𐤏
וְהָיָה֙ הַהִ֔יא בָּעֵ֣ת אֲחַפֵּ֥שׂ אֶת־ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם בַּנֵּר֑וֹת וּפָקַדְתִּ֣י עַל־ הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים הַקֹּֽפְאִים֙ עַל־ שִׁמְרֵיהֶ֔ם הָאֹֽמְרִים֙ בִּלְבָבָ֔ם יְהוָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א לֹֽא־ יֵיטִ֥יב יָרֵֽעַ׃ wə·hā·yāh ha·hî bā·‘êṯ ’ă·ḥap·pêś ’eṯ- yə·rū·šā·lim ban·nê·rō·wṯ ū·p̄ā·qaḏ·tî ‘al- hā·’ă·nā·šîm haq·qō·p̄ə·’îm ‘al- šim·rê·hem hā·’ō·mə·rîm bil·ḇā·ḇām Yah·weh wə·lō lō- yê·ṭîḇ yā·rê·a‘ — WLC · 12

Their wealth will be plundered and their houses laid waste. They will build houses but not inhabit [them], and plant vineyards but never drink their wine.

חֵילָם֙ וְהָיָ֤ה לִמְשִׁסָּ֔ה וּבָתֵּיהֶ֖ם לִשְׁמָמָ֑ה וּבָנ֤וּ בָתִּים֙ וְלֹ֣א יֵשֵׁ֔בוּ וְנָטְע֣וּ כְרָמִ֔ים וְלֹ֥א יִשְׁתּ֖וּ אֶת־ יֵינָֽם׃ ḥê·lām wə·hā·yāh lim·šis·sāh ū·ḇāt·tê·hem liš·mā·māh ū·ḇā·nū ḇāt·tîm wə·lō yê·šê·ḇū wə·nā·ṭə·‘ū ḵə·rā·mîm wə·lō yiš·tū ’eṯ- yê·nām — WLC · 13

The great Day of the LORD is near— near and coming quickly. Listen, the Day of the LORD! Then the cry of the mighty will be bitter.

הַגָּד֔וֹל יוֹם־ יְהוָה֙ קָר֤וֹב קָר֖וֹב וּמַהֵ֣ר מְאֹ֑ד ק֚וֹל י֣וֹם יְהוָ֔ה שָׁ֥ם צֹרֵ֖חַ גִּבּֽוֹר׃ מַ֥ר hag·gā·ḏō·wl yō·wm- Yah·weh qā·rō·wḇ qā·rō·wḇ ū·ma·hêr mə·’ōḏ qō·wl yō·wm Yah·weh šām ṣō·rê·aḥ gib·bō·wr mar — WLC · 14

That day will be a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of destruction and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness,
𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤑𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤒𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤔𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤅𐤀𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤐𐤋𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤓𐤐𐤋
הַה֑וּא י֥וֹם הַיּ֣וֹם עֶבְרָ֖ה י֧וֹם צָרָ֣ה וּמְצוּקָ֗ה י֤וֹם שֹׁאָה֙ וּמְשׁוֹאָ֔ה י֥וֹם חֹ֙שֶׁךְ֙ וַאֲפֵלָ֔ה י֥וֹם עָנָ֖ן וַעֲרָפֶֽל׃ ha·hū yō·wm hay·yō·wm ‘eḇ·rāh yō·wm ṣā·rāh ū·mə·ṣū·qāh yō·wm šō·’āh ū·mə·šō·w·’āh yō·wm ḥō·šeḵ wa·’ă·p̄ê·lāh yō·wm ‘ā·nān wa·‘ă·rā·p̄el — WLC · 15

a day of horn [blast] and battle cry against the fortified cities, and against the high corner towers.
𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤅𐤏𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤁𐤄𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤐𐤍𐤅𐤕
י֥וֹם שׁוֹפָ֖ר וּתְרוּעָ֑ה עַ֚ל הַבְּצֻר֔וֹת הֶעָרִ֣ים וְעַ֖ל הַגְּבֹהֽוֹת׃ הַפִּנּ֥וֹת yō·wm šō·w·p̄ār ū·ṯə·rū·‘āh ‘al hab·bə·ṣu·rō·wṯ he·‘ā·rîm wə·‘al hag·gə·ḇō·hō·wṯ hap·pin·nō·wṯ — WLC · 16

I will bring such distress on mankind that they will walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the LORD. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their flesh like dung.
𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤊𐤏𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤃𐤌𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤐𐤊 𐤊𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤌 𐤊𐤂𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤌
וַהֲצֵרֹ֣תִי לָאָדָ֗ם וְהָֽלְכוּ֙ כַּֽעִוְרִ֔ים כִּ֥י חָטָ֑אוּ לַֽיהוָ֖ה דָּמָם֙ וְשֻׁפַּ֤ךְ כֶּֽעָפָ֔ר וּלְחֻמָ֖ם כַּגְּלָלִֽים׃ wa·hă·ṣê·rō·ṯî lā·’ā·ḏām wə·hā·lə·ḵū ka·‘iw·rîm kî ḥā·ṭā·’ū Yah·weh dā·mām wə·šup·paḵ ke·‘ā·p̄ār ū·lə·ḥu·mām kag·gə·lā·lîm — WLC · 17

[Neither] their silver… nor their gold will be able to deliver them on the Day of the LORD’s wrath. The whole earth will be consumed by the fire of His jealousy.” For indeed, He will make a sudden end of all who dwell on the earth.
