The Case against Israel

Hear now what the LORD says: “Arise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice.
𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤂𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤊
שִׁמְעוּ־ נָ֕א אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֖ה אֹמֵ֑ר ק֚וּם רִ֣יב אֶת־ הֶהָרִ֔ים הַגְּבָע֖וֹת וְתִשְׁמַ֥עְנָה קוֹלֶֽךָ׃ šim·‘ū- nā ’êṯ ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ’ō·mêr qūm rîḇ ’eṯ- he·hā·rîm hag·gə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ wə·ṯiš·ma‘·nāh qō·w·le·ḵā — WLC · 1

Hear, O mountains, the LORD’s indictment -, you enduring foundations of the earth. For the LORD has a case against His people, and He will argue it against Israel:

‘My people, what have I done to you? Testify against Me how I have wearied you!

עַמִּ֛י מֶה־ עָשִׂ֥יתִי לְךָ֖ עֲנֵ֥ה בִּֽי׃ וּמָ֣ה הֶלְאֵתִ֑יךָ ‘am·mî meh- ‘ā·śî·ṯî lə·ḵā ‘ă·nêh bī ū·māh hel·’ê·ṯî·ḵā — WLC · 3

For I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery. I sent Moses before you, as well as Aaron and Miriam.

כִּ֤י הֶעֱלִתִ֙יךָ֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם פְּדִיתִ֑יךָ וּמִבֵּ֥ית עֲבָדִ֖ים וָאֶשְׁלַ֣ח מֹשֶׁ֖ה לְפָנֶ֔יךָ אֶת־ אַהֲרֹ֥ן וּמִרְיָֽם׃ kî he·‘ĕ·li·ṯî·ḵā mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim pə·ḏî·ṯî·ḵā ū·mib·bêṯ ‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm wā·’eš·laḥ mō·šeh lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā ’eṯ- ’a·hă·rōn ū·mir·yām — WLC · 4

My people, remember… what Balak king of Moab counseled and what Balaam son of Beor answered -. Remember [your journey] from Shittim to Gilgal, so that you may acknowledge the righteousness of the LORD.’”

עַמִּ֗י זְכָר־ נָא֙ מַה־ בָּלָק֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ מוֹאָ֔ב יָּעַ֗ץ וּמֶה־ בִּלְעָ֣ם בֶּן־ בְּע֑וֹר עָנָ֥ה אֹת֖וֹ מִן־ הַשִּׁטִּים֙ עַד־ הַגִּלְגָּ֔ל לְמַ֕עַן דַּ֖עַת צִדְק֥וֹת יְהוָֽה׃ ‘am·mî zə·ḵār- nā mah- bā·lāq me·leḵ mō·w·’āḇ yā·‘aṣ ū·meh- bil·‘ām ben- bə·‘ō·wr ‘ā·nāh ’ō·ṯōw min- haš·šiṭ·ṭîm ‘aḏ- hag·gil·gāl lə·ma·‘an da·‘aṯ ṣiḏ·qō·wṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 5

With what shall I come before the LORD when I bow before the God on high? Should I come to Him with burnt offerings, with year-old… calves?

בַּמָּה֙ אֲקַדֵּ֣ם יְהוָ֔ה אִכַּ֖ף לֵאלֹהֵ֣י מָר֑וֹם הַאֲקַדְּמֶ֣נּוּ בְעוֹל֔וֹת בְּנֵ֥י שָׁנָֽה׃ בַּעֲגָלִ֖ים bam·māh ’ă·qad·dêm Yah·weh ’ik·kap̄ lê·lō·hê mā·rō·wm ha·’ă·qad·də·men·nū ḇə·‘ō·w·lō·wṯ bə·nê šā·nāh ba·‘ă·ḡā·lîm — WLC · 6

Would the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body [for] the sin of my soul?

יְהוָה֙ הֲיִרְצֶ֤ה בְּאַלְפֵ֣י אֵילִ֔ים בְּרִֽבְב֖וֹת נַֽחֲלֵי־ שָׁ֑מֶן הַאֶתֵּ֤ן בְּכוֹרִי֙ פִּשְׁעִ֔י פְּרִ֥י בִטְנִ֖י חַטַּ֥את נַפְשִֽׁי׃ Yah·weh hă·yir·ṣeh bə·’al·p̄ê ’ê·lîm bə·riḇ·ḇō·wṯ na·ḥă·lê- šā·men ha·’et·tên bə·ḵō·w·rî piš·‘î pə·rî ḇiṭ·nî ḥaṭ·ṭaṯ nap̄·šî — WLC · 7

He has shown you, O man, what [is] good. And what does the LORD require of you… but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

The Punishment of Israel

The voice of the LORD calls out to the city (and it is sound wisdom to fear Your name): “Heed the rod and the One who ordained it.

ק֤וֹל יְהוָה֙ יִקְרָ֔א לָעִ֣יר וְתוּשִׁיָּ֖ה יִרְאֶ֣ה שְׁמֶ֑ךָ שִׁמְע֥וּ מַטֶּ֖ה וּמִ֥י יְעָדָֽהּ׃ qō·wl Yah·weh yiq·rā lā·‘îr wə·ṯū·šî·yāh yir·’eh šə·me·ḵā šim·‘ū maṭ·ṭeh ū·mî yə·‘ā·ḏāh — WLC · 9

Can I forget any longer…, O house of the wicked, the treasures of wickedness and the short ephah, which is accursed?

Can I excuse dishonest scales or bags of false weights?

הַאֶזְכֶּ֖ה רֶ֑שַׁע בְּמֹ֣אזְנֵי וּבְכִ֖יס מִרְמָֽה׃ אַבְנֵ֥י ha·’ez·keh re·ša‘ bə·mō·zə·nê ū·ḇə·ḵîs mir·māh ’aḇ·nê — WLC · 11

For the wealthy of the city are full of violence, and its residents speak lies; their tongues are deceitful in their mouths.

אֲשֶׁ֤ר עֲשִׁירֶ֙יהָ֙ מָלְא֣וּ חָמָ֔ס וְיֹשְׁבֶ֖יהָ דִּבְּרוּ־ שָׁ֑קֶר וּלְשׁוֹנָ֖ם רְמִיָּ֥ה בְּפִיהֶֽם׃ ’ă·šer ‘ă·šî·re·hā mā·lə·’ū ḥā·mās wə·yō·šə·ḇe·hā dib·bə·rū- šā·qer ū·lə·šō·w·nām rə·mî·yāh bə·p̄î·hem — WLC · 12

Therefore I am striking you severely, to ruin you because of your sins.

וְגַם־ אֲנִ֖י הַכּוֹתֶ֑ךָ הֶחֱלֵ֣יתִי הַשְׁמֵ֖ם עַל־ חַטֹּאתֶֽךָ׃ wə·ḡam- ’ă·nî hak·kō·w·ṯe·ḵā he·ḥĕ·lê·ṯî haš·mêm ‘al- ḥaṭ·ṭō·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 13

You will eat but not be satisfied, and your hunger will remain with you. What you acquire, you will not preserve; and what you save, I will give to the sword.

אַתָּ֤ה תֹאכַל֙ וְלֹ֣א תִשְׂבָּ֔ע וְיֶשְׁחֲךָ֖ בְּקִרְבֶּ֑ךָ וְתַסֵּג֙ וְלֹ֣א תַפְלִ֔יט וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר תְּפַלֵּ֖ט אֶתֵּֽן׃ לַחֶ֥רֶב ’at·tāh ṯō·ḵal wə·lō ṯiś·bā‘ wə·yeš·ḥă·ḵā bə·qir·be·ḵā wə·ṯas·sêḡ wə·lō ṯap̄·lîṭ wa·’ă·šer tə·p̄al·lêṭ ’et·tên la·ḥe·reḇ — WLC · 14

You will sow but not reap; you will press olives but not anoint yourselves with oil; you will tread grapes but not drink the wine.

אַתָּ֥ה תִזְרַ֖ע וְלֹ֣א תִקְצ֑וֹר אַתָּ֤ה תִדְרֹֽךְ־ זַ֙יִת֙ וְלֹא־ תָס֣וּךְ שֶׁ֔מֶן וְתִיר֖וֹשׁ וְלֹ֥א תִשְׁתֶּה־ יָּֽיִן׃ ’at·tāh ṯiz·ra‘ wə·lō ṯiq·ṣō·wr ’at·tāh ṯiḏ·rōḵ- za·yiṯ wə·lō- ṯā·sūḵ še·men wə·ṯî·rō·wōš wə·lō ṯiš·teh- yā·yin — WLC · 15

You have kept the statutes of Omri and all the practices of Ahab’s house; you have followed their counsel. Therefore I will make you a desolation, and your inhabitants an object of contempt; you will bear the scorn of the nations.

וְיִשְׁתַּמֵּ֞ר חֻקּ֣וֹת עָמְרִ֗י וְכֹל֙ מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה אַחְאָ֔ב בֵית־ וַתֵּלְכ֖וּ בְּמֹֽעֲצוֹתָ֑ם לְמַעַן֩ תִּתִּ֨י אֹתְךָ֜ לְשַׁמָּ֗ה וְיֹשְׁבֶ֙יהָ֙ לִשְׁרֵקָ֔ה תִּשָּֽׂאוּ׃פ וְחֶרְפַּ֥ת עַמִּ֖י wə·yiš·tam·mêr ḥuq·qō·wṯ ‘ā·mə·rî wə·ḵōl ma·‘ă·śêh ’aḥ·’āḇ ḇêṯ- wat·tê·lə·ḵū bə·mō·‘ă·ṣō·w·ṯām lə·ma·‘an tit·tî ’ō·ṯə·ḵā lə·šam·māh wə·yō·šə·ḇe·hā liš·rê·qāh tiś·śā·’ū wə·ḥer·paṯ ‘am·mî — WLC · 16
