Chapter 5

A Ruler from Bethlehem

1

Now, O daughter of troops, mobilize your troops; for a siege is laid against us! With a rod they will strike the cheek of the judge of Israel.

𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤕 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤕𐤕𐤂𐤃𐤃𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤓 𐤔𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤉𐤊𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋𐤎

עַתָּה֙ בַת־ גְּד֔וּד תִּתְגֹּדְדִ֣י מָצ֖וֹר שָׂ֣ם עָלֵ֑ינוּ בַּשֵּׁ֙בֶט֙ יַכּ֣וּ עַֽל־ הַלְּחִ֔י אֵ֖ת שֹׁפֵ֥ט יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס ‘at·tāh ḇaṯ- gə·ḏūḏ tiṯ·gō·ḏə·ḏî mā·ṣō·wr śām ‘ā·lê·nū baš·šê·ḇeṭ yak·kū ‘al- hal·lə·ḥî ’êṯ šō·p̄êṭ yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 1

But you, vvv Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come forth for Me One to be ruler over Israel One whose origins are of old, from the days of eternity.

𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤑𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤌𐤌𐤊 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤅𐤔𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤌𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌

וְאַתָּ֞ה בֵּֽית־ לֶ֣חֶם אֶפְרָ֗תָה לִֽהְיוֹת֙ צָעִיר֙ בְּאַלְפֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה מִמְּךָ֙ יֵצֵ֔א לִ֣י לִֽהְי֥וֹת מוֹשֵׁ֖ל בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וּמוֹצָאֹתָ֥יו מִקֶּ֖דֶם מִימֵ֥י עוֹלָֽם׃ wə·’at·tāh bêṯ- le·ḥem ’ep̄·rā·ṯāh lih·yō·wṯ ṣā·‘îr bə·’al·p̄ê yə·hū·ḏāh mim·mə·ḵā yê·ṣê lî lih·yō·wṯ mō·wō·šêl bə·yiś·rā·’êl ū·mō·w·ṣā·’ō·ṯāw miq·qe·ḏem mî·mê ‘ō·w·lāmWLC · 2

Therefore [Israel] will be abandoned until… she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of His brothers will return to the children of Israel.

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤅𐤋𐤃𐤄 𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤓 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

לָכֵ֣ן יִתְּנֵ֔ם עַד־ עֵ֥ת יוֹלֵדָ֖ה יָלָ֑דָה וְיֶ֣תֶר אֶחָ֔יו יְשׁוּב֖וּן עַל־ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ lā·ḵên yit·tə·nêm ‘aḏ- ‘êṯ yō·w·lê·ḏāh yā·lā·ḏāh wə·ye·ṯer ’e·ḥāw yə·šū·ḇūn ‘al- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 3

He will stand and shepherd [His flock] in the strength of the LORD, in the majestic name of the LORD His God. And they will dwell securely, for then His greatness will extend to the ends of the earth.

𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤅𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤆 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤐𐤎𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑

וְעָמַ֗ד וְרָעָה֙ בְּעֹ֣ז יְהוָ֔ה בִּגְא֕וֹן שֵׁ֖ם יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֑יו וְיָשָׁ֕בוּ כִּֽי־ עַתָּ֥ה יִגְדַּ֖ל עַד־ אַפְסֵי־ אָֽרֶץ׃ wə·‘ā·maḏ wə·rā·‘āh bə·‘ōz Yah·weh biḡ·’ō·wn šêm Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāw wə·yā·šā·ḇū kî- ‘at·tāh yiḡ·dal ‘aḏ- ’ap̄·sê- ’ā·reṣWLC · 4

And He will be our peace when Assyria invades our land and tramples our citadels. We will raise against it seven shepherds, even eight leaders of men.

𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤌𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤍𐤎𐤉𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤌

זֶ֖ה וְהָיָ֥ה שָׁל֑וֹם כִּֽי־ אַשּׁ֣וּר׀ יָב֣וֹא בְאַרְצֵ֗נוּ וְכִ֤י יִדְרֹךְ֙ בְּאַרְמְנֹתֵ֔ינוּ וַהֲקֵמֹ֤נוּ עָלָיו֙ שִׁבְעָ֣ה רֹעִ֔ים וּשְׁמֹנָ֖ה נְסִיכֵ֥י אָדָֽם׃ zeh wə·hā·yāh šā·lō·wm kî- ’aš·šūr yā·ḇō·w ḇə·’ar·ṣê·nū wə·ḵî yiḏ·rōḵ bə·’ar·mə·nō·ṯê·nū wa·hă·qê·mō·nū ‘ā·lāw šiḇ·‘āh rō·‘îm ū·šə·mō·nāh nə·sî·ḵê ’ā·ḏāmWLC · 5

And they will rule the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod with the blade drawn. So He will deliver us when Assyria invades our land and marches into our borders.

𐤅𐤓𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤍𐤌𐤓𐤃 𐤁𐤐𐤕𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤉𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤁𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤋𐤍𐤅𐤎

וְרָע֞וּ אֶת־ אֶ֤רֶץ אַשּׁוּר֙ בַּחֶ֔רֶב וְאֶת־ אֶ֥רֶץ נִמְרֹ֖ד בִּפְתָחֶ֑יהָ וְהִצִּיל֙ כִּֽי־ מֵֽאַשּׁ֔וּר יָב֣וֹא בְאַרְצֵ֔נוּ וְכִ֥י יִדְרֹ֖ךְ בִּגְבוּלֵֽנוּ׃ס wə·rā·‘ū ’eṯ- ’e·reṣ ’aš·šūr ba·ḥe·reḇ wə·’eṯ- ’e·reṣ nim·rōḏ bip̄·ṯā·ḥe·hā wə·hiṣ·ṣîl kî- mê·’aš·šūr yā·ḇō·w ḇə·’ar·ṣê·nū wə·ḵî yiḏ·rōḵ biḡ·ḇū·lê·nūWLC · 6

The Remnant of Jacob

Then the remnant of Jacob will be in the midst of many peoples like dew from the LORD, like showers on the grass, which do not wait for man or linger for mankind…

𐤔𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤈𐤋 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤁 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤒𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤉𐤇𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤌

שְׁאֵרִ֣ית יַעֲקֹ֗ב וְהָיָ֣ה׀ בְּקֶ֙רֶב֙ רַבִּ֔ים עַמִּ֣ים כְּטַל֙ מֵאֵ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה כִּרְבִיבִ֖ים עֲלֵי־ עֵ֑שֶׂב אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ יְקַוֶּה֙ לְאִ֔ישׁ וְלֹ֥א יְיַחֵ֖ל לִבְנֵ֥י אָדָֽם׃ šə·’ê·rîṯ ya·‘ă·qōḇ wə·hā·yāh bə·qe·reḇ rab·bîm ‘am·mîm kə·ṭal mê·’êṯ Yah·weh kir·ḇî·ḇîm ‘ă·lê- ‘ê·śeḇ ’ă·šer lō- yə·qaw·weh lə·’îš wə·lō yə·ya·ḥêl liḇ·nê ’ā·ḏāmWLC · 7

Then the remnant of Jacob will be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, like a lion among the beasts of the forest, like a young lion among flocks of sheep, which tramples and tears as it passes through, with no one to rescue them.

𐤔𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤏𐤓 𐤊𐤊𐤐𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤃𐤓𐤉 𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤓𐤌𐤎 𐤅𐤈𐤓𐤐 𐤀𐤌 𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤑𐤉𐤋

שְׁאֵרִ֨ית יַעֲקֹ֜ב וְהָיָה֩ בַּגּוֹיִ֗ם בְּקֶ֙רֶב֙ רַבִּ֔ים עַמִּ֣ים כְּאַרְיֵה֙ בְּבַהֲמ֣וֹת יַ֔עַר כִּכְפִ֖יר בְּעֶדְרֵי צֹ֑אן אֲשֶׁ֧ר וְרָמַ֥ס וְטָרַ֖ף אִם עָבַ֛ר וְאֵ֥ין מַצִּֽיל׃ šə·’ê·rîṯ ya·‘ă·qōḇ wə·hā·yāh bag·gō·w·yim bə·qe·reḇ rab·bîm ‘am·mîm kə·’ar·yêh bə·ḇa·hă·mō·wṯ ya·‘ar kiḵ·p̄îr bə·ʿɛḏ·rē ṣōn ’ă·šer wə·rā·mas wə·ṭā·rap̄ ’im ‘ā·ḇar wə·’ên maṣ·ṣîlWLC · 8

Your hand will be lifted over your foes, and all your enemies will be cut off.

𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤕𐤓𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤅𐤐

יָדְךָ֖ תָּרֹ֥ם עַל־ צָרֶ֑יךָ וְכָל־ אֹיְבֶ֖יךָ יִכָּרֵֽתוּ׃פ yā·ḏə·ḵā tā·rōm ‘al- ṣā·re·ḵā wə·ḵāl ’ō·yə·ḇe·ḵā yik·kā·rê·ṯūWLC · 9

“- In that day,” declares the LORD, “I will remove your horses from among you and wreck your chariots.

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤎𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤓𐤊𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊

וְהָיָ֤ה הַהוּא֙ בַיּוֹם־ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י סוּסֶ֖יךָ מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ וְהַאֲבַדְתִּ֖י מַרְכְּבֹתֶֽיךָ׃ wə·hā·yāh ha·hū ḇay·yō·wm- nə·’um- Yah·weh wə·hiḵ·rat·tî sū·se·ḵā miq·qir·be·ḵā wə·ha·’ă·ḇaḏ·tî mar·kə·ḇō·ṯe·ḵāWLC · 10

I will remove the cities of your land and tear down all your strongholds.

𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤎𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤁𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤊

וְהִכְרַתִּ֖י עָרֵ֣י אַרְצֶ֑ךָ וְהָרַסְתִּ֖י כָּל־ מִבְצָרֶֽיךָ׃ wə·hiḵ·rat·tî ‘ā·rê ’ar·ṣe·ḵā wə·hā·ras·tî kāl- miḇ·ṣā·re·ḵāWLC · 11

I will cut the sorceries from your hand, and you will have no fortune-tellers.

𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤔𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤌

וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י כְשָׁפִ֖ים מִיָּדֶ֑ךָ יִֽהְיוּ־ לָֽךְ׃ לֹ֥א וּֽמְעוֹנְנִ֖ים wə·hiḵ·rat·tî ḵə·šā·p̄îm mî·yā·ḏe·ḵā yih·yū- lāḵ lō ū·mə·‘ō·wn·nîmWLC · 12

I will also cut off the carved images and sacred pillars from among you, so that you will no longer bow down to the work of your own hands.

𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤐𐤎𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤌𐤑𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤕𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤊

וְהִכְרַתִּ֧י פְסִילֶ֛יךָ וּמַצֵּבוֹתֶ֖יךָ מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ וְלֹֽא־ ע֖וֹד תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֥ה לְמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יָדֶֽיךָ׃ wə·hiḵ·rat·tî p̄ə·sî·le·ḵā ū·maṣ·ṣê·ḇō·w·ṯe·ḵā miq·qir·be·ḵā wə·lō- ‘ō·wḏ ṯiš·ta·ḥă·weh lə·ma·‘ă·śêh yā·ḏe·ḵāWLC · 13

I will root out the Asherah poles from your midst and demolish your cities.

𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤊

וְנָתַשְׁתִּ֥י אֲשֵׁירֶ֖יךָ מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ וְהִשְׁמַדְתִּ֖י עָרֶֽיךָ׃ wə·nā·ṯaš·tî ’ă·šê·re·ḵā miq·qir·be·ḵā wə·hiš·maḏ·tî ‘ā·re·ḵāWLC · 14

15

I will take vengeance… in anger and wrath upon the nations that have not obeyed Me.”

𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤍𐤒𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤐 𐤅𐤁𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤎

וְעָשִׂ֜יתִי נָקָ֖ם אֶת־ בְּאַ֧ף וּבְחֵמָ֛ה הַגּוֹיִ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר לֹ֥א שָׁמֵֽעוּ׃ס wə·‘ā·śî·ṯî nā·qām ’eṯ- bə·’ap̄ ū·ḇə·ḥê·māh hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer lō šā·mê·‘ūWLC · 15
