Chapter 1

Judgment to Come

1

[This is] the word of the LORD that came to Micah the Moreshite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah— what he saw regarding Samaria and Jerusalem:

𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤉𐤊𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤉𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤆𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌

דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֣ה׀ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֗ה אֶל־ מִיכָה֙ הַמֹּ֣רַשְׁתִּ֔י בִּימֵ֥י יוֹתָ֛ם אָחָ֥ז יְחִזְקִיָּ֖ה מַלְכֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה אֲשֶׁר־ חָזָ֥ה עַל־ שֹׁמְר֖וֹן וִירֽוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ də·ḇar- Yah·weh ’ă·šer hā·yāh ’el- mî·ḵāh ham·mō·raš·tî bî·mê yō·w·ṯām ’ā·ḥāz yə·ḥiz·qî·yāh mal·ḵê yə·hū·ḏāh ’ă·šer- ḥā·zāh ‘al- šō·mə·rō·wn wî·rū·šā·limWLC · 1

Hear, O peoples, all of you; listen, O earth, and everyone in it! May the Lord GOD bear witness against you, the Lord from His holy temple.

𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤄𐤒𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤃 𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤅 𐤌𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋

שִׁמְעוּ֙ עַמִּ֣ים כֻּלָּ֔ם הַקְשִׁ֖יבִי אֶ֣רֶץ וּמְלֹאָ֑הּ אֲדֹנָ֨י יְהוִ֤ה וִיהִי֩ לְעֵ֔ד בָּכֶם֙ אֲדֹנָ֖י קָדְשֽׁוֹ׃ מֵהֵיכַ֥ל šim·‘ū ‘am·mîm kul·lām haq·šî·ḇî ’e·reṣ ū·mə·lō·’āh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh wî·hî lə·‘êḏ bā·ḵem ’ă·ḏō·nāy qā·ḏə·šōw mê·hê·ḵalWLC · 2

For behold, the LORD comes forth from His dwelling place; He will come down and tread on the high places of the earth.

𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤅𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑

כִּֽי־ הִנֵּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה יֹצֵ֣א מִמְּקוֹמ֑וֹ וְיָרַ֥ד וְדָרַ֖ךְ עַל־ בָּמוֹתֵי אָֽרֶץ׃ kî- hin·nêh Yah·weh yō·ṣê mim·mə·qō·w·mōw wə·yā·raḏ wə·ḏā·raḵ ‘al- bå̄·mō·ṯē ’ā·reṣWLC · 3

The mountains will melt beneath Him, and the valleys will split apart, like wax before the fire, like water rushing down a slope.

𐤄𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤌𐤎𐤅 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤕𐤁𐤒𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤃𐤅𐤍𐤂 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤔 𐤊𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤂𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤓𐤃

הֶֽהָרִים֙ וְנָמַ֤סּוּ תַּחְתָּ֔יו וְהָעֲמָקִ֖ים יִתְבַּקָּ֑עוּ כַּדּוֹנַג֙ מִפְּנֵ֣י הָאֵ֔שׁ כְּמַ֖יִם מֻגָּרִ֥ים בְּמוֹרָֽד׃ he·hā·rîm wə·nā·mas·sū taḥ·tāw wə·hā·‘ă·mā·qîm yiṯ·baq·qā·‘ū kad·dō·w·naḡ mip·pə·nê hā·’êš kə·ma·yim mug·gā·rîm bə·mō·w·rāḏWLC · 4

All this [is] for the transgression of Jacob and the sins of the house of Israel. What [is] the transgression of Jacob? Is it not Samaria? And what is the high place of Judah? Is it not Jerusalem?

𐤊𐤋 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤐𐤔𐤏 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤁𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤉 𐤐𐤔𐤏 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌

כָּל־ זֹ֔את בְּפֶ֤שַׁע יַֽעֲקֹב֙ וּבְחַטֹּ֖אות בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מִֽי־ פֶ֣שַׁע יַעֲקֹ֗ב הֲלוֹא֙ שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן וּמִי֙ בָּמ֣וֹת יְהוּדָ֔ה הֲל֖וֹא יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ kāl- zōṯ bə·p̄e·ša‘ ya·‘ă·qōḇ ū·ḇə·ḥaṭ·ṭō·wṯ bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl mî- p̄e·ša‘ ya·‘ă·qōḇ hă·lō·w šō·mə·rō·wn ū·mî bā·mō·wṯ yə·hū·ḏāh hă·lō·w yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 5

Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of rubble in the open field, a planting area for a vineyard. I will pour her stones into the valley and expose her foundations.

𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤏𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤈𐤏𐤉 𐤊𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤂𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤂𐤉 𐤀𐤂𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤃𐤉𐤄

וְשַׂמְתִּ֥י שֹׁמְר֛וֹן לְעִ֥י הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה לְמַטָּ֣עֵי כָ֑רֶם וְהִגַּרְתִּ֤י אֲבָנֶ֔יהָ לַגַּי֙ אֲגַלֶּֽה׃ וִיסֹדֶ֖יהָ wə·śam·tî šō·mə·rō·wn lə·‘î haś·śā·ḏeh lə·maṭ·ṭā·‘ê ḵā·rem wə·hig·gar·tî ’ă·ḇā·ne·hā lag·gay ’ă·ḡal·leh wî·sō·ḏe·hāWLC · 6

All her carved images will be smashed to pieces; all her wages will be burned in the fire, and I will destroy… all her idols. Since she collected… the wages of a prostitute, they will be used again on a prostitute.

וְכָל־ פְּסִילֶ֣יהָ יֻכַּ֗תּוּ וְכָל־ אֶתְנַנֶּ֙יהָ֙ יִשָּׂרְפ֣וּ בָאֵ֔שׁ אָשִׂ֣ים שְׁמָמָ֑ה וְכָל־ עֲצַבֶּ֖יהָ כִּ֠י קִבָּ֔צָה וְעַד־ מֵאֶתְנַ֤ן זוֹנָה֙ אֶתְנַ֥ן יָשֽׁוּבוּ׃ זוֹנָ֖ה wə·ḵāl pə·sî·le·hā yuk·kat·tū wə·ḵāl ’eṯ·nan·ne·hā yiś·śā·rə·p̄ū ḇā·’êš ’ā·śîm šə·mā·māh wə·ḵāl ‘ă·ṣab·be·hā kî qib·bā·ṣāh wə·‘aḏ- mê·’eṯ·nan zō·w·nāh ’eṯ·nan yā·šū·ḇū zō·w·nāhWLC · 7

Weeping and Mourning

Because of this I will lament and wail; I will walk barefoot and naked. I will howl… like a jackal and mourn like an ostrich.

𐤏𐤋 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤄 𐤔𐤉𐤋𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤎𐤐𐤃 𐤊𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤋 𐤊𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤄

עַל־ זֹאת֙ אֶסְפְּדָ֣ה וְאֵילִ֔ילָה אֵילְכָ֥ה שֵׁילָל וְעָר֑וֹם אֶעֱשֶׂ֤ה מִסְפֵּד֙ כַּתַּנִּ֔ים וְאֵ֖בֶל כִּבְנ֥וֹת יַעֲנָֽה׃ ‘al- zōṯ ’es·pə·ḏāh wə·’ê·lî·lāh ’ê·lə·ḵāh šē·lå̄l wə·‘ā·rō·wm ’e·‘ĕ·śeh mis·pêḏ kat·tan·nîm wə·’ê·ḇel kiḇ·nō·wṯ ya·‘ă·nāhWLC · 8

For her wound is incurable; it has reached… even Judah; it has approached the gate of my people,… as far as Jerusalem itself.

כִּ֥י מַכּוֹתֶ֑יהָ אֲנוּשָׁ֖ה כִּי־ בָ֙אָה֙ עַד־ יְהוּדָ֔ה נָגַ֛ע שַׁ֥עַר עַמִּ֖י עַד־ עַד־ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ kî mak·kō·w·ṯe·hā ’ă·nū·šāh kî- ḇā·’āh ‘aḏ- yə·hū·ḏāh nā·ḡa‘ ša·‘ar ‘am·mî ‘aḏ- ‘aḏ- yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 9

Do not tell it in Gath; do not weep… at all. Roll in the dust in Beth-leaphrah.

אַל־ תַּגִּ֔ידוּ בְּגַת֙ בָּכ֖וֹ אַל־ תִּבְכּ֑וּ הִתְפַּלָּשְׁתִּי׃ עָפָ֖ר בְּבֵ֣ית לְעַפְרָ֔ה ’al- tag·gî·ḏū bə·ḡaṯ bā·ḵōw ’al- tiḇ·kū hiṯ·pal·lå̄·šə·tī ‘ā·p̄ār bə·ḇêṯ lə·‘ap̄·rāhWLC · 10

Depart in shameful nakedness, O dwellers of Shaphir. The dwellers of Zaanan will not come out. vvv Beth-ezel is in mourning; its support is taken from you.

𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤕 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤔𐤐𐤉𐤓 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤍 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤌𐤎𐤐𐤃 𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤕𐤅 𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤌𐤊𐤌

עִבְרִ֥י לָכֶ֛ם בֹ֑שֶׁת עֶרְיָה־ יוֹשֶׁ֥בֶת שָׁפִ֖יר יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת צַֽאֲנָ֔ן לֹ֤א יָֽצְאָה֙ בֵּ֣ית הָאֵ֔צֶל מִסְפַּד֙ עֶמְדָּתֽוֹ׃ יִקַּ֥ח מִכֶּ֖ם ‘iḇ·rî lā·ḵem ḇō·šeṯ ‘er·yāh- yō·wō·še·ḇeṯ šā·p̄îr yō·wō·še·ḇeṯ ṣa·’ă·nān lō yā·ṣə·’āh bêṯ hā·’ê·ṣel mis·paḏ ‘em·dā·ṯōw yiq·qaḥ mik·kemWLC · 11

For the dwellers of Maroth pined for good, but calamity came down from the LORD, even to the gate of Jerusalem.

כִּֽי־ יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת מָר֑וֹת חָ֥לָֽה לְט֖וֹב כִּֽי־ רָע֙ יָ֤רַד מֵאֵ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה לְשַׁ֖עַר יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ kî- yō·wō·še·ḇeṯ mā·rō·wṯ ḥā·lāh lə·ṭō·wḇ kî- rā‘ yā·raḏ mê·’êṯ Yah·weh lə·ša·‘ar yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 12

Harness your chariot horses, O dweller of Lachish. You were the beginning of sin to the Daughter of Zion, for the transgressions of Israel were found in you.

𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤓𐤊𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤓𐤊𐤔 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤕 𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤉 𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤊

רְתֹ֧ם הַמֶּרְכָּבָ֛ה לָרֶ֖כֶשׁ יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת לָכִ֑ישׁ הִיא֙ רֵאשִׁ֨ית חַטָּ֥את לְבַת־ צִיּ֔וֹן כִּי־ פִּשְׁעֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ נִמְצְא֖וּ בָ֥ךְ rə·ṯōm ham·mer·kā·ḇāh lā·re·ḵeš yō·wō·še·ḇeṯ lā·ḵîš hî rê·šîṯ ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ lə·ḇaṯ- ṣî·yō·wn kî- piš·‘ê yiś·rā·’êl nim·ṣə·’ū ḇāḵWLC · 13

Therefore, send farewell gifts to vvv Moresheth-gath; the houses of Achzib [will] prove deceptive to the kings of Israel.

לָכֵן֙ תִּתְּנִ֣י שִׁלּוּחִ֔ים עַ֖ל מוֹרֶ֣שֶׁת גַּ֑ת בָּתֵּ֤י אַכְזִיב֙ לְאַכְזָ֔ב לְמַלְכֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ lā·ḵên tit·tə·nî šil·lū·ḥîm ‘al mō·w·re·šeṯ gaṯ bāt·tê ’aḵ·zîḇ lə·’aḵ·zāḇ lə·mal·ḵê yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 14

I will again bring a conqueror against you, O dweller of Mareshah. The glory of Israel will come to Adullam.

עֹ֗ד אָ֣בִי הַיֹּרֵשׁ֙ לָ֔ךְ יוֹשֶׁ֖בֶת מָֽרֵשָׁ֑ה כְּב֥וֹד יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ יָב֖וֹא עַד־ עֲדֻּלָּ֥ם ‘ōḏ ’ā·ḇî hay·yō·rêš lāḵ yō·wō·še·ḇeṯ mā·rê·šāh kə·ḇō·wḏ yiś·rā·’êl yā·ḇō·w ‘aḏ- ʿăd·dul·lå̄mWLC · 15

Shave yourselves bald and cut off your hair in mourning for your precious children; make yourselves as bald as an eagle, for they will go from you into exile.

קָרְחִ֣י וָגֹ֔זִּי עַל־ תַּעֲנוּגָ֑יִךְ בְּנֵ֖י הַרְחִ֤בִי קָרְחָתֵךְ֙ כַּנֶּ֔שֶׁר כִּ֥י מִמֵּֽךְ׃ס גָל֖וּ qā·rə·ḥî wā·ḡōz·zî ‘al- ta·‘ă·nū·ḡā·yiḵ bə·nê har·ḥi·ḇî qā·rə·ḥā·ṯêḵ kan·ne·šer kî mim·mêḵ ḡā·lūWLC · 16
