Chapter 2
Jonah’s Prayer
1
From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,
𐤌𐤌𐤏𐤉 𐤄𐤃𐤂𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅
מִמְּעֵ֖י הַדָּגָֽה׃ יוֹנָ֔ה וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֣ל אֶל־ יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהָ֑יו mim·mə·‘ê had·dā·ḡāh yō·w·nāh way·yiṯ·pal·lêl ’el- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāw — WLC · 1

saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, [and] You heard my voice.
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤁𐤈𐤍 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤉
וַיֹּ֗אמֶר מִצָּ֥רָה לִ֛י קָ֠רָאתִי אֶל־ יְהוָ֖ה וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֑נִי מִבֶּ֧טֶן שְׁא֛וֹל שִׁוַּ֖עְתִּי שָׁמַ֥עְתָּ קוֹלִֽי׃ way·yō·mer miṣ·ṣā·rāh lî qā·rā·ṯî ’el- Yah·weh way·ya·‘ă·nê·nî mib·be·ṭen šə·’ō·wl šiw·wa‘·tî šā·ma‘·tā qō·w·lî — WLC · 2

For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me.
𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤄𐤓 𐤉𐤎𐤁𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉
וַתַּשְׁלִיכֵ֤נִי מְצוּלָה֙ בִּלְבַ֣ב יַמִּ֔ים וְנָהָ֖ר יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי כָּל־ מִשְׁבָּרֶ֥יךָ וְגַלֶּ֖יךָ עָבָֽרוּ׃ עָלַ֥י wat·taš·lî·ḵê·nî mə·ṣū·lāh bil·ḇaḇ yam·mîm wə·nā·hār yə·sō·ḇə·ḇê·nî kāl- miš·bā·re·ḵā wə·ḡal·le·ḵā ‘ā·ḇā·rū ‘ā·lay — WLC · 3

At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’
𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤍𐤂𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤍𐤂𐤃 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤊 𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤈 𐤀𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤐 𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋
וַאֲנִ֣י אָמַ֔רְתִּי נִגְרַ֖שְׁתִּי מִנֶּ֣גֶד עֵינֶ֑יךָ אַ֚ךְ לְהַבִּ֔יט אוֹסִ֣יף אֶל־ קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃ הֵיכַ֖ל wa·’ă·nî ’ā·mar·tî niḡ·raš·tî min·ne·ḡeḏ ‘ê·ne·ḵā ’aḵ lə·hab·bîṭ ’ō·w·sîp̄ ’el- qāḏ·še·ḵā hê·ḵal — WLC · 4

The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head.
𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤐𐤐𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤃 𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤕𐤄𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤎𐤁𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤎𐤅𐤐 𐤇𐤁𐤅𐤔 𐤋𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉
מַ֙יִם֙ אֲפָפ֤וּנִי עַד־ נֶ֔פֶשׁ תְּה֖וֹם יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי ס֖וּף חָב֥וּשׁ לְרֹאשִֽׁי׃ ma·yim ’ă·p̄ā·p̄ū·nî ‘aḏ- ne·p̄eš tə·hō·wm yə·sō·ḇə·ḇê·nî sūp̄ ḥā·ḇūš lə·rō·šî — WLC · 5

To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God!
𐤋𐤒𐤑𐤁𐤉 𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤁𐤏𐤃𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤏𐤋 𐤇𐤉𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤇𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉
לְקִצְבֵ֤י הָרִים֙ יָרַ֔דְתִּי הָאָ֛רֶץ בַעֲדִ֖י בְּרִחֶ֥יהָ לְעוֹלָ֑ם וַתַּ֧עַל חַיַּ֖י מִשַּׁ֛חַת יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָֽי׃ lə·qiṣ·ḇê hā·rîm yā·raḏ·tî hā·’ā·reṣ ḇa·‘ă·ḏî bə·ri·ḥe·hā lə·‘ō·w·lām wat·ta·‘al ḥay·yay miš·ša·ḥaṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāy — WLC · 6

As my life was fading away…, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple.
𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤄𐤕𐤏𐤈𐤐 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋
נַפְשִׁ֔י אֶת־ בְּהִתְעַטֵּ֤ף עָלַי֙ זָכָ֑רְתִּי יְהוָ֖ה תְּפִלָּתִ֔י וַתָּב֤וֹא אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ אֶל־ קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃ הֵיכַ֖ל nap̄·šî ’eṯ- bə·hiṯ·‘aṭ·ṭêp̄ ‘ā·lay zā·ḵā·rə·tî Yah·weh tə·p̄il·lā·ṯî wat·tā·ḇō·w ’ê·le·ḵā ’el- qāḏ·še·ḵā hê·ḵal — WLC · 7

Those who cling to worthless idols forsake [His] loving devotion.
𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤁𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤅 𐤇𐤎𐤃𐤌
מְשַׁמְּרִ֖ים שָׁ֑וְא הַבְלֵי־ יַעֲזֹֽבוּ׃ חַסְדָּ֖ם mə·šam·mə·rîm šāw haḇ·lê- ya·‘ă·zō·ḇū ḥas·dām — WLC · 8

But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!”
𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤕𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤃𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤎
וַאֲנִ֗י בְּק֤וֹל תּוֹדָה֙ אֶזְבְּחָה־ לָּ֔ךְ אֲשַׁלֵּ֑מָה אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָדַ֖רְתִּי יְשׁוּעָ֖תָה לַיהוָֽה׃ס wa·’ă·nî bə·qō·wl tō·w·ḏāh ’ez·bə·ḥāh- lāḵ ’ă·šal·lê·māh ’ă·šer nā·ḏar·tî yə·šū·‘ā·ṯāh Yah·weh — WLC · 9

And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
