The Destruction of Israel

I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and He said: “Strike the tops of the pillars so that the thresholds shake. Topple them on the heads of all the people, and I will kill the rest with the sword. None of those who flee will get away; none of the fugitives will escape

רָאִ֨יתִי אֶת־ אֲדֹנָ֜י נִצָּ֣ב עַֽל־ הַמִּזְבֵּ֗חַ וַיֹּאמֶר֩ הַ֨ךְ הַכַּפְתּ֜וֹר הַסִּפִּ֗ים וְיִרְעֲשׁ֣וּ וּבְצַ֙עַם֙ בְּרֹ֣אשׁ כֻּלָּ֔ם אֶהֱרֹ֑ג וְאַחֲרִיתָ֖ם בַּחֶ֣רֶב לֹֽא־ יָנ֤וּס לָהֶם֙ נָ֔ס וְלֹֽא־ פָּלִֽיט׃ יִמָּלֵ֥ט לָהֶ֖ם rā·’î·ṯî ’eṯ- ’ă·ḏō·nāy niṣ·ṣāḇ ‘al- ham·miz·bê·aḥ way·yō·mer haḵ hak·kap̄·tō·wr has·sip·pîm wə·yir·‘ă·šū ū·ḇə·ṣa·‘am bə·rōš kul·lām ’e·hĕ·rōḡ wə·’a·ḥă·rî·ṯām ba·ḥe·reḇ lō- yā·nūs lā·hem nās wə·lō- pā·lîṭ yim·mā·lêṭ lā·hem — WLC · 1

Though they dig down to Sheol, from there My hand will take them; and though they climb up to heaven, from there I will pull them down.

אִם־ יַחְתְּר֣וּ בִשְׁא֔וֹל מִשָּׁ֖ם יָדִ֣י תִקָּחֵ֑ם וְאִֽם־ יַעֲלוּ֙ הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם מִשָּׁ֖ם אוֹרִידֵֽם׃ ’im- yaḥ·tə·rū ḇiš·’ō·wl miš·šām yā·ḏî ṯiq·qā·ḥêm wə·’im- ya·‘ă·lū haš·šā·ma·yim miš·šām ’ō·w·rî·ḏêm — WLC · 2

Though they hide themselves atop Carmel, there I will track them and seize them; and though they hide from Me at the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent to bite them.

וְאִם־ יֵחָֽבְאוּ֙ בְּרֹ֣אשׁ הַכַּרְמֶ֔ל מִשָּׁ֥ם אֲחַפֵּ֖שׂ וּלְקַחְתִּ֑ים וְאִם־ יִסָּ֨תְר֜וּ מִנֶּ֤גֶד עֵינַי֙ בְּקַרְקַ֣ע הַיָּ֔ם מִשָּׁ֛ם אֲצַוֶּ֥ה אֶת־ הַנָּחָ֖שׁ וּנְשָׁכָֽם׃ wə·’im- yê·ḥā·ḇə·’ū bə·rōš hak·kar·mel miš·šām ’ă·ḥap·pêś ū·lə·qaḥ·tîm wə·’im- yis·sā·ṯə·rū min·ne·ḡeḏ ‘ê·nay bə·qar·qa‘ hay·yām miš·šām ’ă·ṣaw·weh ’eṯ- han·nā·ḥāš ū·nə·šā·ḵām — WLC · 3

Though they are driven by their enemies into captivity, there I will command the sword to slay them. I will fix My eyes upon them for harm and not for good.”

The Lord GOD of Hosts, He who touches the earth and it melts, and all its dwellers mourn— all [the land] rises like the Nile, then sinks like the river of Egypt—

וַאדֹנָ֨י יְהוִ֜ה הַצְּבָא֗וֹת הַנּוֹגֵ֤עַ בָּאָ֙רֶץ֙ וַתָּמ֔וֹג כָּל־ י֣וֹשְׁבֵי בָ֑הּ וְאָבְל֖וּ כֻּלָּ֔הּ וְעָלְתָ֤ה כַיְאֹר֙ וְשָׁקְעָ֖ה כִּיאֹ֥ר מִצְרָֽיִם wa·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh haṣ·ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ han·nō·w·ḡê·a‘ bā·’ā·reṣ wat·tā·mō·wḡ kāl- yō·wō·šə·ḇê ḇāh wə·’ā·ḇə·lū kul·lāh wə·‘ā·lə·ṯāh ḵay·’ōr wə·šā·qə·‘āh kî·’ōr miṣ·rå̄·yim — WLC · 5

He builds His upper rooms in the heavens and founds His vault upon the earth. He summons the waters of the sea and pours them over the face of the earth. The LORD is His name.

הַבּוֹנֶ֤ה מַעֲלוֹתוֹ בַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ יְסָדָ֑הּ וַאֲגֻדָּת֖וֹ עַל־ אֶ֣רֶץ הַקֹּרֵ֣א לְמֵֽי־ הַיָּ֗ם וַֽיִּשְׁפְּכֵ֛ם עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ יְהוָ֥ה שְׁמֽוֹ׃ hab·bō·w·neh ma·ʿă·lō·ṯō ḇaš·šā·ma·yim yə·sā·ḏāh wa·’ă·ḡud·dā·ṯōw ‘al- ’e·reṣ haq·qō·rê lə·mê- hay·yām way·yiš·pə·ḵêm ‘al- pə·nê hā·’ā·reṣ Yah·weh šə·mōw — WLC · 6

“Are you not… vvv like the Cushites to Me, O children of Israel?” declares the LORD. “Did I not bring Israel up from the land of Egypt, the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Arameans from Kir?

הֲל֣וֹא אַתֶּ֥ם כִבְנֵי֩ כֻשִׁיִּ֨ים לִ֛י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֑ה הֲל֣וֹא אֶת־ הֶעֱלֵ֙יתִי֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם וּפְלִשְׁתִּיִּ֥ים מִכַּפְתּ֖וֹר וַאֲרָ֥ם מִקִּֽיר׃ hă·lō·w ’at·tem ḵiḇ·nê ḵu·šî·yîm lî bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl nə·’um- Yah·weh hă·lō·w ’eṯ- he·‘ĕ·lê·ṯî yiś·rā·’êl mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim ū·p̄ə·liš·tî·yîm mik·kap̄·tō·wr wa·’ă·rām miq·qîr — WLC · 7

Surely the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth Yet I will not utterly destroy… the house of Jacob,” declares the LORD.

הִנֵּ֞ה עֵינֵ֣י׀ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה הַֽחַטָּאָ֔ה בַּמַּמְלָכָה֙ וְהִשְׁמַדְתִּ֣י אֹתָ֔הּ מֵעַ֖ל פְּנֵ֣י הָאֲדָמָ֑ה אֶ֗פֶס כִּ֠י לֹ֣א הַשְׁמֵ֥יד אַשְׁמִ֛יד אֶת־ בֵּ֥ית יַעֲקֹ֖ב נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ hin·nêh ‘ê·nê ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ha·ḥaṭ·ṭā·’āh bam·mam·lā·ḵāh wə·hiš·maḏ·tî ’ō·ṯāh mê·‘al pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’e·p̄es kî lō haš·mêḏ ’aš·mîḏ ’eṯ- bêṯ ya·‘ă·qōḇ nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 8

“For surely I will give the command, and I will shake the house of Israel among all the nations as [grain] is sifted in a sieve; but not a pebble will reach the ground.

כִּֽי־ הִנֵּ֤ה אָֽנֹכִי֙ מְצַוֶּ֔ה וַהֲנִע֥וֹתִי בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל בְכָֽל־ הַגּוֹיִ֖ם אֶת־ כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר יִנּ֙וֹעַ֙ בַּכְּבָרָ֔ה וְלֹֽא־ צְר֖וֹר יִפּ֥וֹל אָֽרֶץ׃ kî- hin·nêh ’ā·nō·ḵî mə·ṣaw·weh wa·hă·ni·‘ō·w·ṯî bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl ḇə·ḵāl- hag·gō·w·yim ’eṯ- ka·’ă·šer yin·nō·w·a‘ bak·kə·ḇā·rāh wə·lō- ṣə·rō·wr yip·pō·wl ’ā·reṣ — WLC · 9

All the sinners among My people will die by the sword— all those who say, ‘Disaster will never draw near or confront us.’”

A Promise of Restoration

“In that day I will restore the fallen tent of David. I will repair its gaps, restore its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old,

הַה֔וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם אָקִ֛ים אֶת־ הַנֹּפֶ֑לֶת סֻכַּ֥ת דָּוִ֖יד וְגָדַרְתִּ֣י אֶת־ פִּרְצֵיהֶ֗ן אָקִ֔ים וַהֲרִֽסֹתָיו֙ וּבְנִיתִ֖יהָ כִּימֵ֥י עוֹלָֽם׃ ha·hū bay·yō·wm ’ā·qîm ’eṯ- han·nō·p̄e·leṯ suk·kaṯ dā·wîḏ wə·ḡā·ḏar·tî ’eṯ- pir·ṣê·hen ’ā·qîm wa·hă·ri·sō·ṯāw ū·ḇə·nî·ṯî·hā kî·mê ‘ō·w·lām — WLC · 11

that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that bear My name,”… declares the LORD, who will do this.

לְמַ֨עַן יִֽירְשׁ֜וּ אֶת־ שְׁאֵרִ֤ית אֱדוֹם֙ וְכָל־ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־ נִקְרָ֥א שְׁמִ֖י עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֖ה עֹ֥שֶׂה זֹּֽאת׃פ lə·ma·‘an yî·rə·šū ’eṯ- šə·’ê·rîṯ ’ĕ·ḏō·wm wə·ḵāl hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer- niq·rā šə·mî ‘ă·lê·hem nə·’um- Yah·weh ‘ō·śeh zōṯ — WLC · 12

“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when the plowman will overtake the reaper and the treader of grapes, the sower of seed. The mountains will drip with sweet wine, with which all the hills will flow.

הִנֵּ֨ה יָמִ֤ים בָּאִים֙ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה חוֹרֵשׁ֙ וְנִגַּ֤שׁ בַּקֹּצֵ֔ר וְדֹרֵ֥ךְ עֲנָבִ֖ים בְּמֹשֵׁ֣ךְ הַזָּ֑רַע הֶֽהָרִים֙ וְהִטִּ֤יפוּ עָסִ֔יס וְכָל־ הַגְּבָע֖וֹת תִּתְמוֹגַֽגְנָה׃ hin·nêh yā·mîm bā·’îm nə·’um- Yah·weh ḥō·w·rêš wə·nig·gaš baq·qō·ṣêr wə·ḏō·rêḵ ‘ă·nā·ḇîm bə·mō·šêḵ haz·zā·ra‘ he·hā·rîm wə·hiṭ·ṭî·p̄ū ‘ā·sîs wə·ḵāl hag·gə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ tiṯ·mō·w·ḡaḡ·nāh — WLC · 13

I will restore My people Israel from captivity; they will rebuild and inhabit the ruined cities. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit.

וְשַׁבְתִּי֮ אֶת־ עַמִּ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ שְׁב֣וּת וּבָנ֞וּ וְיָשָׁ֔בוּ נְשַׁמּוֹת֙ עָרִ֤ים וְנָטְע֣וּ כְרָמִ֔ים וְשָׁת֖וּ אֶת־ יֵינָ֑ם וְעָשׂ֣וּ גַנּ֔וֹת וְאָכְל֖וּ אֶת־ פְּרִיהֶֽם׃ wə·šaḇ·tî ’eṯ- ‘am·mî yiś·rā·’êl šə·ḇūṯ ū·ḇā·nū wə·yā·šā·ḇū nə·šam·mō·wṯ ‘ā·rîm wə·nā·ṭə·‘ū ḵə·rā·mîm wə·šā·ṯū ’eṯ- yê·nām wə·‘ā·śū ḡan·nō·wṯ wə·’ā·ḵə·lū ’eṯ- pə·rî·hem — WLC · 14

I will firmly plant them in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land that I have given them,” says the LORD your God.
