Chapter 8
The Basket of Summer Fruit

This is what the Lord GOD showed me: I saw a basket of summer fruit.
𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤋𐤅𐤁 𐤒𐤉𐤑
כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה הִרְאַ֖נִי וְהִנֵּ֖ה כְּל֥וּב קָֽיִץ׃ kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh hir·’a·nî wə·hin·nêh kə·lūḇ qā·yiṣ — WLC · 1

“Amos, what do you see?” He asked. “A basket of summer fruit,” I replied. So the LORD said to me, “The end has come for My people Israel; I will no longer… spare them.”

עָמ֔וֹס מָֽה־ אַתָּ֤ה רֹאֶה֙ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר כְּל֣וּב קָ֑יִץ וָאֹמַ֖ר יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלַ֗י הַקֵּץ֙ בָּ֤א אֶל־ עַמִּ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לֹא־ אוֹסִ֥יף ע֖וֹד עֲב֥וֹר לֽוֹ׃ ‘ā·mō·ws māh- ’at·tāh rō·’eh way·yō·mer kə·lūḇ qā·yiṣ wā·’ō·mar Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lay haq·qêṣ bā ’el- ‘am·mî yiś·rā·’êl lō- ’ō·w·sîp̄ ‘ō·wḏ ‘ă·ḇō·wr lōw — WLC · 2

“In that day,” declares the Lord GOD, “the songs of the temple will turn to wailing. Many [will be] the corpses, strewn in silence everywhere…!”

הַה֔וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה שִׁיר֤וֹת הֵיכָל֙ וְהֵילִ֜ילוּ רַ֣ב הַפֶּ֔גֶר הִשְׁלִ֥יךְ הָֽס׃פ בְּכָל־ מָק֖וֹם ha·hū bay·yō·wm nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh šî·rō·wṯ hê·ḵāl wə·hê·lî·lū raḇ hap·pe·ḡer hiš·lîḵ hās bə·ḵāl mā·qō·wm — WLC · 3

Hear this, you who trample the needy, who do away with the poor of the land,
𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤀𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤏𐤍𐤅𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑
שִׁמְעוּ־ זֹ֕את הַשֹּׁאֲפִ֖ים אֶבְי֑וֹן וְלַשְׁבִּ֖ית עַנְוֵי אָֽרֶץ׃ šim·‘ū- zōṯ haš·šō·’ă·p̄îm ’eḇ·yō·wn wə·laš·bîṯ ʿan·wē ’ā·reṣ — WLC · 4

asking, “When will the New Moon be over, that we may sell grain? When will the Sabbath [end], that we may market wheat? Let us reduce the ephah and increase the shekel; let us cheat with dishonest scales.
𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤕𐤇𐤄 𐤁𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤒𐤈𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤉𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤋 𐤔𐤒𐤋 𐤅𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤓𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉
לֵאמֹ֗ר מָתַ֞י הַחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ יַעֲבֹ֤ר וְנַשְׁבִּ֣ירָה שֶּׁ֔בֶר וְהַשַּׁבָּ֖ת וְנִפְתְּחָה־ בָּ֑ר לְהַקְטִ֤ין אֵיפָה֙ וּלְהַגְדִּ֣יל שֶׁ֔קֶל וּלְעַוֵּ֖ת מִרְמָֽה׃ מֹאזְנֵ֥י lê·mōr mā·ṯay ha·ḥō·ḏeš ya·‘ă·ḇōr wə·naš·bî·rāh še·ḇer wə·haš·šab·bāṯ wə·nip̄·tə·ḥāh- bār lə·haq·ṭîn ’ê·p̄āh ū·lə·haḡ·dîl še·qel ū·lə·‘aw·wêṯ mir·māh mō·zə·nê — WLC · 5

Let us buy the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, selling even the chaff with the wheat!”

לִקְנ֤וֹת דַּלִּ֔ים בַּכֶּ֙סֶף֙ וְאֶבְי֖וֹן בַּעֲב֣וּר נַעֲלָ֑יִם נַשְׁבִּֽיר׃ וּמַפַּ֥ל בַּ֖ר liq·nō·wṯ dal·lîm bak·ke·sep̄ wə·’eḇ·yō·wn ba·‘ă·ḇūr na·‘ă·lā·yim naš·bîr ū·map·pal bar — WLC · 6

The LORD has sworn by the Pride of Jacob: “I will never… forget any of their deeds.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤁𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤍𐤑𐤇 𐤀𐤔𐤊𐤇 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤌
יְהוָ֖ה נִשְׁבַּ֥ע בִּגְא֣וֹן יַעֲקֹ֑ב אִם־ לָנֶ֖צַח אֶשְׁכַּ֥ח כָּל־ מַעֲשֵׂיהֶֽם׃ Yah·weh niš·ba‘ biḡ·’ō·wn ya·‘ă·qōḇ ’im- lā·ne·ṣaḥ ’eš·kaḥ kāl- ma·‘ă·śê·hem — WLC · 7

Will not the land quake for this, and all its dwellers mourn? All of it will swell like the Nile; it will surge and then subside like the Nile in Egypt.

לֹֽא־ הָאָ֔רֶץ תִרְגַּ֣ז הַ֤עַל זֹאת֙ כָּל־ יוֹשֵׁ֣ב בָּ֑הּ וְאָבַ֖ל כֻּלָּ֔הּ וְעָלְתָ֤ה כָאֹר֙ וְנִגְרְשָׁ֥ה וְנִשְׁקָה כִּיא֥וֹר מִצְרָֽיִם׃ס lō- hā·’ā·reṣ ṯir·gaz ha·‘al zōṯ kāl- yō·wō·šêḇ bāh wə·’ā·ḇal kul·lāh wə·‘ā·lə·ṯāh ḵā·’ōr wə·niḡ·rə·šāh wə·niš·qå̄h kî·’ō·wr miṣ·rā·yim — WLC · 8

- And in that day, declares the Lord GOD, I will make the sun go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the daytime…
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤔 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤑𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤇𐤔𐤊𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤓
וְהָיָ֣ה׀ הַה֗וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם נְאֻם֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ וְהֵבֵאתִ֥י בַּֽצָּהֳרָ֑יִם וְהַחֲשַׁכְתִּ֥י לָאָ֖רֶץ בְּי֥וֹם אֽוֹר׃ wə·hā·yāh ha·hū bay·yō·wm nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh haš·še·meš wə·hê·ḇê·ṯî baṣ·ṣā·ho·rā·yim wə·ha·ḥă·šaḵ·tî lā·’ā·reṣ bə·yō·wm ’ō·wr — WLC · 9

I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation. I will cause everyone to wear… sackcloth… and every head to be shaved. I will make it like a time of mourning for an only son, and its outcome like a bitter day.
𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤊𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤂𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤔𐤉𐤓𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤒𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤒 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤒𐤓𐤇𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤀𐤁𐤋 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤉𐤅𐤌
וְהָפַכְתִּ֨י חַגֵּיכֶ֜ם לְאֵ֗בֶל וְכָל־ שִֽׁירֵיכֶם֙ לְקִינָ֔ה כָּל־ וְהַעֲלֵיתִ֤י עַל־ מָתְנַ֙יִם֙ שָׂ֔ק וְעַל־ כָּל־ רֹ֖אשׁ קָרְחָ֑ה וְשַׂמְתִּ֙יהָ֙ כְּאֵ֣בֶל יָחִ֔יד וְאַחֲרִיתָ֖הּ מָֽר׃ כְּי֥וֹם wə·hā·p̄aḵ·tî ḥag·gê·ḵem lə·’ê·ḇel wə·ḵāl šî·rê·ḵem lə·qî·nāh kāl- wə·ha·‘ă·lê·ṯî ‘al- mā·ṯə·na·yim śāq wə·‘al- kāl- rōš qā·rə·ḥāh wə·śam·tî·hā kə·’ê·ḇel yā·ḥîḏ wə·’a·ḥă·rî·ṯāh mār kə·yō·wm — WLC · 10

Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord GOD, when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread… or a thirst for water, but [a famine]… of hearing the words of the LORD.
𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤋𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤑𐤌𐤀 𐤋𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
הִנֵּ֣ה׀ יָמִ֣ים בָּאִ֗ים נְאֻם֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה וְהִשְׁלַחְתִּ֥י רָעָ֖ב בָּאָ֑רֶץ לֹֽא־ רָעָ֤ב לַלֶּ֙חֶם֙ וְלֹֽא־ צָמָ֣א לַמַּ֔יִם כִּ֣י אִם־ לִשְׁמֹ֔עַ אֵ֖ת דִּבְרֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ hin·nêh yā·mîm bā·’îm nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh wə·hiš·laḥ·tî rā·‘āḇ bā·’ā·reṣ lō- rā·‘āḇ lal·le·ḥem wə·lō- ṣā·mā lam·ma·yim kî ’im- liš·mō·a‘ ’êṯ diḇ·rê Yah·weh — WLC · 11

People will stagger from sea to sea and roam from north to east, seeking the word of the LORD, but they will not find it.
𐤅𐤍𐤏𐤅 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤈𐤈𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤌𐤆𐤓𐤇 𐤋𐤁𐤒𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤅
וְנָעוּ֙ מִיָּ֣ם עַד־ יָ֔ם יְשֽׁוֹטְט֛וּ וּמִצָּפ֖וֹן וְעַד־ מִזְרָ֑ח לְבַקֵּ֥שׁ אֶת־ דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א יִמְצָֽאוּ׃ wə·nā·‘ū mî·yām ‘aḏ- yām yə·šō·wṭ·ṭū ū·miṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn wə·‘aḏ- miz·rāḥ lə·ḇaq·qêš ’eṯ- də·ḇar- Yah·weh wə·lō yim·ṣā·’ū — WLC · 12

In that day the lovely young women— the young men as well— will faint from thirst.

הַה֜וּא בַּיּ֨וֹם הַיָּפ֛וֹת הַבְּתוּלֹ֧ת וְהַבַּחוּרִ֖ים תִּ֠תְעַלַּפְנָה בַּצָּמָֽא׃ ha·hū bay·yō·wm hay·yā·p̄ō·wṯ hab·bə·ṯū·lōṯ wə·hab·ba·ḥū·rîm tiṯ·‘al·lap̄·nāh baṣ·ṣā·mā — WLC · 13

Those who swear by the guilt of Samaria and say, ‘As surely as your god lives, O Dan,’ or, ‘As surely as the way vvv of Beersheba lives’— they will fall, never to rise again.”
