Witnesses against Israel
1
Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt…:

שִׁמְע֞וּ אֶת־ הַזֶּ֗ה הַדָּבָ֣ר אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָ֛ה דִּבֶּ֧ר עֲלֵיכֶ֖ם בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עַ֚ל כָּל־ הַמִּשְׁפָּחָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֧ר הֶעֱלֵ֛יתִי מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם לֵאמֹֽר׃ šim·‘ū ’eṯ- haz·zeh had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer Yah·weh dib·ber ‘ă·lê·ḵem bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl ‘al kāl- ham·miš·pā·ḥāh ’ă·šer he·‘ĕ·lê·ṯî mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Only you have I known from all the families of the earth; therefore… I will punish you for all your iniquities.”

Can two walk together without… agreeing [where to go]?

Does a lion roar in the forest when he has no prey? Does a young lion growl… in his den if he has caught nothing?

אַרְיֵה֙ הֲיִשְׁאַ֤ג בַּיַּ֔עַר אֵ֣ין ל֑וֹ וְטֶ֖רֶף כְּפִ֤יר הֲיִתֵּ֨ן קוֹלוֹ֙ מִמְּעֹ֣נָת֔וֹ אִם־ לָכָֽד׃ בִּלְתִּ֖י ’ar·yêh hă·yiš·’aḡ bay·ya·‘ar ’ên lōw wə·ṭe·rep̄ kə·p̄îr hă·yit·tên qō·w·lōw mim·mə·‘ō·nā·ṯōw ’im- lā·ḵāḏ bil·tî — WLC · 4

Does a bird land in a snare where no bait [has been set]? Does a trap spring from the ground when it has nothing to catch?

צִפּוֹר֙ הֲתִפֹּ֤ל עַל־ פַּ֣ח הָאָ֔רֶץ אֵ֣ין וּמוֹקֵ֖שׁ לָ֑הּ פַּח֙ הֲיַֽעֲלֶה־ מִן־ הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה וְלָכ֖וֹד לֹ֥א יִלְכּֽוֹד׃ ṣip·pō·wr hă·ṯip·pōl ‘al- paḥ hā·’ā·reṣ ’ên ū·mō·w·qêš lāh paḥ hă·ya·‘ă·leh- min- hā·’ă·ḏā·māh wə·lā·ḵō·wḏ lō yil·kō·wḏ — WLC · 5

If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble? If calamity comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it?
𐤀𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤓 𐤉𐤕𐤒𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤇𐤓𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤌 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤄
אִם־ שׁוֹפָר֙ יִתָּקַ֤ע בְּעִ֔יר וְעָ֖ם לֹ֣א יֶחֱרָ֑דוּ אִם־ רָעָה֙ תִּהְיֶ֤ה בְּעִ֔יר לֹ֥א וַיהוָ֖ה עָשָֽׂה׃ ’im- šō·w·p̄ār yit·tā·qa‘ bə·‘îr wə·‘ām lō ye·ḥĕ·rā·ḏū ’im- rā·‘āh tih·yeh bə·‘îr lō Yah·weh ‘ā·śāh — WLC · 6

Surely the Lord GOD does nothing… without… revealing His plan to His servants the prophets.

כִּ֣י אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִ֖ה יַעֲשֶׂ֛ה לֹ֧א דָּבָ֑ר כִּ֚י אִם־ גָּלָ֣ה סוֹד֔וֹ אֶל־ עֲבָדָ֖יו הַנְּבִיאִֽים׃ kî ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ya·‘ă·śeh lō dā·ḇār kî ’im- gā·lāh sō·w·ḏōw ’el- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw han·nə·ḇî·’îm — WLC · 7

The lion has roared— who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken— who will not prophesy?

אַרְיֵ֥ה שָׁאָ֖ג מִ֣י לֹ֣א יִירָ֑א אֲדֹנָ֤י יְהוִה֙ דִּבֶּ֔ר מִ֖י לֹ֥א יִנָּבֵֽא׃ ’ar·yêh šā·’āḡ mî lō yî·rā ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh dib·ber mî lō yin·nā·ḇê — WLC · 8

Proclaim to the citadels of Ashdod and to the citadels of Egypt…: “Assemble on the mountains of Samaria; see the great unrest in the city and the acts of oppression in her midst.”

הַשְׁמִ֙יעוּ֙ עַל־ אַרְמְנ֣וֹת בְּאַשְׁדּ֔וֹד וְעַֽל־ אַרְמְנ֖וֹת בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם וְאִמְר֗וּ הֵאָֽסְפוּ֙ עַל־ הָרֵ֣י שֹׁמְר֔וֹן וּרְא֞וּ רַבּוֹת֙ מְהוּמֹ֤ת בְּתוֹכָ֔הּ וַעֲשׁוּקִ֖ים בְּקִרְבָּֽהּ׃ haš·mî·‘ū ‘al- ’ar·mə·nō·wṯ bə·’aš·dō·wḏ wə·‘al- ’ar·mə·nō·wṯ bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim wə·’im·rū hê·’ā·sə·p̄ū ‘al- hā·rê šō·mə·rō·wn ū·rə·’ū rab·bō·wṯ mə·hū·mōṯ bə·ṯō·w·ḵāh wa·‘ă·šū·qîm bə·qir·bāh — WLC · 9

“For they know not how to do right,” declares the LORD. “They store up violence and destruction in their citadels.”

יָדְע֥וּ וְלֹֽא־ עֲשׂוֹת־ נְכֹחָ֖ה נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֑ה הָאֽוֹצְרִ֛ים חָמָ֥ס וָשֹׁ֖ד בְּאַרְמְנֽוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃פ yā·ḏə·‘ū wə·lō- ‘ă·śō·wṯ- nə·ḵō·ḥāh nə·’um- Yah·weh hā·’ō·wṣ·rîm ḥā·mās wā·šōḏ bə·’ar·mə·nō·w·ṯê·hem — WLC · 10

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: “An enemy will surround the land; he will pull down… your strongholds and plunder your citadels.”

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ צַ֖ר וּסְבִ֣יב הָאָ֑רֶץ וְהוֹרִ֤ד מִמֵּךְ֙ עֻזֵּ֔ךְ וְנָבֹ֖זּוּ אַרְמְנוֹתָֽיִךְ׃ lā·ḵên kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ṣar ū·sə·ḇîḇ hā·’ā·reṣ wə·hō·w·riḏ mim·mêḵ ‘uz·zêḵ wə·nā·ḇōz·zū ’ar·mə·nō·w·ṯā·yiḵ — WLC · 11

This is what the LORD says: “As the shepherd snatches from the mouth of the lion two legs or a piece of an ear, so the Israelites… dwelling in Samaria will be rescued [having just] the corner of a bed or the cushion of a couch.
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤉𐤑𐤉𐤋 𐤌𐤐𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤉 𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤃𐤋 𐤀𐤆𐤍 𐤊𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤍𐤑𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤐𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤈𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤃𐤌𐤔𐤒 𐤏𐤓𐤔
כֹּה֮ יְהוָה֒ אָמַ֣ר כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ הָרֹעֶ֜ה יַצִּ֨יל מִפִּ֧י הָאֲרִ֛י שְׁתֵּ֥י כְרָעַ֖יִם א֣וֹ בְדַל־ אֹ֑זֶן כֵּ֣ן בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הַיֹּֽשְׁבִים֙ בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן יִנָּצְל֞וּ בִּפְאַ֥ת מִטָּ֖ה וּבִדְמֶ֥שֶׁק עָֽרֶשׂ׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ka·’ă·šer hā·rō·‘eh yaṣ·ṣîl mip·pî hā·’ă·rî šə·tê ḵə·rā·‘a·yim ’ōw ḇə·ḏal- ’ō·zen kên bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl hay·yō·šə·ḇîm bə·šō·mə·rō·wn yin·nā·ṣə·lū bip̄·’aṯ miṭ·ṭāh ū·ḇiḏ·me·šeq ‘ā·reś — WLC · 12

Hear and testify against the house of Jacob, declares the Lord GOD, the God of Hosts.

שִׁמְע֥וּ וְהָעִ֖ידוּ בְּבֵ֣ית יַֽעֲקֹ֑ב נְאֻם־ אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י הַצְּבָאֽוֹת׃ šim·‘ū wə·hā·‘î·ḏū bə·ḇêṯ ya·‘ă·qōḇ nə·’um- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê haṣ·ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 13

- On the day I punish Israel for their transgressions I will visit [destruction] on the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off, and they will fall to the ground.

כִּ֗י בְּי֛וֹם פָּקְדִ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל פִשְׁעֵֽי־ עָלָ֑יו וּפָֽקַדְתִּי֙ עַל־ מִזְבְּח֣וֹת בֵּֽית־ אֵ֔ל קַרְנ֣וֹת הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ וְנִגְדְּעוּ֙ וְנָפְל֖וּ לָאָֽרֶץ׃ kî bə·yō·wm pā·qə·ḏî yiś·rā·’êl p̄iš·‘ê- ‘ā·lāw ū·p̄ā·qaḏ·tî ‘al- miz·bə·ḥō·wṯ bêṯ- ’êl qar·nō·wṯ ham·miz·bê·aḥ wə·niḡ·də·‘ū wə·nā·p̄ə·lū lā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 14

I will tear down the winter house along with the summer house; the houses of ivory will also perish, and the great houses will come to an end,” declares the LORD.

וְהִכֵּיתִ֥י הַחֹ֖רֶף בֵית־ עַל־ הַקָּ֑יִץ בֵּ֣ית בָּתֵּ֣י הַשֵּׁ֗ן וְאָבְד֞וּ רַבִּ֖ים בָּתִּ֥ים וְסָפ֛וּ נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ס wə·hik·kê·ṯî ha·ḥō·rep̄ ḇêṯ- ‘al- haq·qā·yiṣ bêṯ bāt·tê haš·šên wə·’ā·ḇə·ḏū rab·bîm bāt·tîm wə·sā·p̄ū nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 15
