Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors
1
[These are] the words of Amos, who was among the sheepherders of Tekoa— what he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, in the days [when] Uzziah [was] king of Judah… and Jeroboam son of Jehoash [was] king of Israel.

He said: “The LORD roars from Zion and raises His voice from Jerusalem; the pastures of the shepherds mourn, and the summit of Carmel withers.”

וַיֹּאמַ֓ר׀ יְהוָה֙ יִשְׁאָ֔ג מִצִיּ֣וֹן יִתֵּ֣ן קוֹל֑וֹ וּמִירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם נְא֣וֹת הָרֹעִ֔ים וְאָֽבְלוּ֙ רֹ֥אשׁ הַכַּרְמֶֽל׃פ וְיָבֵ֖שׁ way·yō·mar Yah·weh yiš·’āḡ mi·ṣī·yōn yit·tên qō·w·lōw ū·mî·rū·šā·lim nə·’ō·wṯ hā·rō·‘îm wə·’ā·ḇə·lū rōš hak·kar·mel wə·yā·ḇêš — WLC · 2

This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Damascus, even four, I will not revoke [My judgment], because they threshed Gilead with sledges of iron.
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤄 𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤉 𐤃𐤌𐤔𐤒 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤂𐤋𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤆𐤋
כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר עַל־ שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ פִּשְׁעֵ֣י דַמֶּ֔שֶׂק וְעַל־ אַרְבָּעָ֖ה לֹ֣א אֲשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ עַל־ דּוּשָׁ֛ם הַגִּלְעָֽד׃ אֶת־ בַּחֲרֻצ֥וֹת הַבַּרְזֶ֖ל kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ‘al- šə·lō·šāh piš·‘ê ḏam·me·śeq wə·‘al- ’ar·bā·‘āh lō ’ă·šî·ḇen·nū ‘al- dū·šām hag·gil·‘āḏ ’eṯ- ba·ḥă·ru·ṣō·wṯ hab·bar·zel — WLC · 3

So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael to consume the citadels of Ben-hadad.

I will break down the gates of Damascus; I will cut off the ruler from the Valley of Aven… and the one who wields the scepter in Beth-eden… The people of Aram will be exiled to Kir,” says the LORD.

וְשָֽׁבַרְתִּי֙ בְּרִ֣יחַ דַּמֶּ֔שֶׂק וְהִכְרַתִּ֤י יוֹשֵׁב֙ מִבִּקְעַת־ אָ֔וֶן וְתוֹמֵ֥ךְ שֵׁ֖בֶט מִבֵּ֣ית עֶ֑דֶן עַם־ אֲרָ֛ם וְגָל֧וּ קִ֖ירָה אָמַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃פ wə·šā·ḇar·tî bə·rî·aḥ dam·me·śeq wə·hiḵ·rat·tî yō·wō·šêḇ mib·biq·‘aṯ- ’ā·wen wə·ṯō·w·mêḵ šê·ḇeṭ mib·bêṯ ‘e·ḏen ‘am- ’ă·rām wə·ḡā·lū qî·rāh ’ā·mar Yah·weh — WLC · 5

This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Gaza, even four, I will not revoke [My judgment], because they exiled a whole population, delivering [them] up to Edom.

כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר עַל־ שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ פִּשְׁעֵ֣י עַזָּ֔ה וְעַל־ אַרְבָּעָ֖ה לֹ֣א אֲשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ עַל־ הַגְלוֹתָ֛ם שְׁלֵמָ֖ה גָּל֥וּת לְהַסְגִּ֥יר לֶאֱדֽוֹם׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ‘al- šə·lō·šāh piš·‘ê ‘az·zāh wə·‘al- ’ar·bā·‘āh lō ’ă·šî·ḇen·nū ‘al- haḡ·lō·w·ṯām šə·lê·māh gā·lūṯ lə·has·gîr le·’ĕ·ḏō·wm — WLC · 6

So I will send fire upon the walls of Gaza, to consume its citadels.

וְשִׁלַּ֥חְתִּי אֵ֖שׁ בְּחוֹמַ֣ת עַזָּ֑ה וְאָכְלָ֖ה אַרְמְנֹתֶֽיהָ׃ wə·šil·laḥ·tî ’êš bə·ḥō·w·maṯ ‘az·zāh wə·’ā·ḵə·lāh ’ar·mə·nō·ṯe·hā — WLC · 7

I will cut off the ruler of Ashdod and the one who wields the scepter in Ashkelon. I will turn My hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,” says the Lord GOD.

וְהִכְרַתִּ֤י יוֹשֵׁב֙ מֵֽאַשְׁדּ֔וֹד וְתוֹמֵ֥ךְ שֵׁ֖בֶט מֵֽאַשְׁקְל֑וֹן וַהֲשִׁיב֨וֹתִי יָדִ֜י עַל־ עֶקְר֗וֹן שְׁאֵרִ֣ית פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וְאָֽבְדוּ֙ אָמַ֖ר אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃פ wə·hiḵ·rat·tî yō·wō·šêḇ mê·’aš·dō·wḏ wə·ṯō·w·mêḵ šê·ḇeṭ mê·’aš·qə·lō·wn wa·hă·šî·ḇō·w·ṯî yā·ḏî ‘al- ‘eq·rō·wn šə·’ê·rîṯ pə·liš·tîm wə·’ā·ḇə·ḏū ’ā·mar ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 8

This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Tyre, even four, I will not revoke [My judgment], because they delivered up a whole congregation of exiles to Edom and broke… a covenant of brotherhood.
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤄 𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤉 𐤑𐤓 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤎𐤂𐤉𐤓𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤌
כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר עַל־ שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ פִּשְׁעֵי־ צֹ֔ר וְעַל־ אַרְבָּעָ֖ה לֹ֣א אֲשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ עַֽל־ הַסְגִּירָ֞ם שְׁלֵמָה֙ גָּל֤וּת לֶאֱד֔וֹם וְלֹ֥א זָכְר֖וּ בְּרִ֥ית אַחִֽים׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ‘al- šə·lō·šāh piš·‘ê- ṣōr wə·‘al- ’ar·bā·‘āh lō ’ă·šî·ḇen·nū ‘al- has·gî·rām šə·lê·māh gā·lūṯ le·’ĕ·ḏō·wm wə·lō zā·ḵə·rū bə·rîṯ ’a·ḥîm — WLC · 9

So I will send fire upon the walls of Tyre to consume its citadels.”

This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Edom, even four, I will not revoke [My judgment], because he pursued his brother with the sword and stifled all compassion; his anger raged continually, and his fury flamed incessantly.

כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר עַל־ שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ פִּשְׁעֵ֣י אֱד֔וֹם וְעַל־ אַרְבָּעָ֖ה לֹ֣א אֲשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ עַל־ רָדְפ֨וֹ אָחִיו֙ בַחֶ֤רֶב וְשִׁחֵ֣ת רַחֲמָ֔יו אַפּ֔וֹ וַיִּטְרֹ֤ף לָעַד֙ וְעֶבְרָת֖וֹ שְׁמָ֥רָה נֶֽצַח׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ‘al- šə·lō·šāh piš·‘ê ’ĕ·ḏō·wm wə·‘al- ’ar·bā·‘āh lō ’ă·šî·ḇen·nū ‘al- rā·ḏə·p̄ōw ’ā·ḥîw ḇa·ḥe·reḇ wə·ši·ḥêṯ ra·ḥă·māw ’ap·pōw way·yiṭ·rōp̄ lā·‘aḏ wə·‘eḇ·rā·ṯōw šə·mā·rāh ne·ṣaḥ — WLC · 11

So I will send fire upon Teman to consume the citadels of Bozrah.”

וְשִׁלַּ֥חְתִּי אֵ֖שׁ בְּתֵימָ֑ן וְאָכְלָ֖ה אַרְמְנ֥וֹת בָּצְרָֽה׃פ wə·šil·laḥ·tî ’êš bə·ṯê·mān wə·’ā·ḵə·lāh ’ar·mə·nō·wṯ bāṣ·rāh — WLC · 12

This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of the Ammonites…, even four, I will not revoke [My judgment], because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead in order to enlarge their territory.

כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר עַל־ שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ פִּשְׁעֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־ עַמּ֔וֹן וְעַל־ אַרְבָּעָ֖ה לֹ֣א אֲשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ עַל־ בִּקְעָם֙ הָר֣וֹת הַגִּלְעָ֔ד לְמַ֖עַן הַרְחִ֥יב אֶת־ גְּבוּלָֽם׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ‘al- šə·lō·šāh piš·‘ê ḇə·nê- ‘am·mō·wn wə·‘al- ’ar·bā·‘āh lō ’ă·šî·ḇen·nū ‘al- biq·‘ām hā·rō·wṯ hag·gil·‘āḏ lə·ma·‘an har·ḥîḇ ’eṯ- gə·ḇū·lām — WLC · 13

So I will kindle a fire in the walls of Rabbah to consume its citadels amid war cries on the day of battle and a violent wind on the day of tempest.

Their king will go into exile he and his princes together,” says the LORD.
