Chapter 8
Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind
1
[Put] the ram’s horn to your lips! An eagle looms over the house of the LORD, because [the people] have transgressed My covenant and rebelled against My law.

Israel cries out to Me, “O our God, we know You!”

יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ יִזְעָ֑קוּ לִ֖י אֱלֹהַ֥י יְֽדַעֲנ֖וּךָ yiś·rā·’êl yiz·‘ā·qū lî ’ĕ·lō·hay yə·ḏa·‘ă·nū·ḵā — WLC · 2

[But] Israel has rejected good; an enemy will pursue him.
𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤆𐤍𐤇 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁 𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤐𐤅
יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל זָנַ֥ח ט֑וֹב אוֹיֵ֖ב יִרְדְּֽפוֹ׃ yiś·rā·’êl zā·naḥ ṭō·wḇ ’ō·w·yêḇ yir·də·p̄ō — WLC · 3

They set up kings, but not by Me. They make princes, but without My approval. With their silver and gold they make themselves idols, to their own destruction.

הֵ֤ם הִמְלִיכוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א מִמֶּ֔נִּי הֵשִׂ֖ירוּ וְלֹ֣א יָדָ֑עְתִּי כַּסְפָּ֣ם וּזְהָבָ֗ם עָשׂ֤וּ לָהֶם֙ עֲצַבִּ֔ים לְמַ֖עַן יִכָּרֵֽת׃ hêm him·lî·ḵū wə·lō mim·men·nî hê·śî·rū wə·lō yā·ḏā·‘ə·tî kas·pām ū·zə·hā·ḇām ‘ā·śū lā·hem ‘ă·ṣab·bîm lə·ma·‘an yik·kā·rêṯ — WLC · 4

He has rejected your calf, O Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will they be… incapable… of innocence?

זָנַח֙ עֶגְלֵ֣ךְ שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן אַפִּ֖י חָרָ֥ה בָּ֑ם עַד־ מָתַ֕י לֹ֥א יוּכְל֖וּ נִקָּיֹֽן׃ zā·naḥ ‘eḡ·lêḵ šō·mə·rō·wn ’ap·pî ḥā·rāh bām ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay lō yū·ḵə·lū niq·qā·yōn — WLC · 5

For this thing is from Israel— a craftsman made it, and it… is not God. It will be broken to pieces, that calf of Samaria.
𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤓𐤔 𐤏𐤔𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤂𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍
כִּ֤י וְה֔וּא מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל֙ חָרָ֣שׁ עָשָׂ֔הוּ ה֑וּא כִּֽי־ וְלֹ֥א אֱלֹהִ֖ים יִֽהְיֶ֔ה שְׁבָבִ֣ים עֵ֖גֶל שֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃ kî wə·hū mî·yiś·rā·’êl ḥā·rāš ‘ā·śā·hū hū kî- wə·lō ’ĕ·lō·hîm yih·yeh šə·ḇā·ḇîm ‘ê·ḡel šō·mə·rō·wn — WLC · 6

For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. There is no standing grain; what sprouts fails to yield flour. Even if it should produce, the foreigners would swallow it up.

כִּ֛י יִזְרָ֖עוּ ר֥וּחַ יִקְצֹ֑רוּ וְסוּפָ֣תָה אֵֽין־ ל֗וֹ קָמָ֣ה צֶ֚מַח בְּלִ֣י יַֽעֲשֶׂה־ קֶּ֔מַח אוּלַ֣י יַֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה זָרִ֖ים יִבְלָעֻֽהוּ׃ kî yiz·rā·‘ū rū·aḥ yiq·ṣō·rū wə·sū·p̄ā·ṯāh ’ên- lōw qā·māh ṣe·maḥ bə·lî ya·‘ă·śeh- qe·maḥ ’ū·lay ya·‘ă·śeh zā·rîm yiḇ·lā·‘u·hū — WLC · 7

Israel is swallowed up! Now they are among the nations like a worthless… vessel.
𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤏 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤇𐤐𐤑 𐤁𐤅 𐤊𐤊𐤋𐤉
יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל נִבְלַ֖ע עַתָּה֙ הָי֣וּ בַגּוֹיִ֔ם אֵֽין־ חֵ֥פֶץ בּֽוֹ׃ כִּכְלִ֖י yiś·rā·’êl niḇ·la‘ ‘at·tāh hā·yū ḇag·gō·w·yim ’ên- ḥê·p̄eṣ bōw kiḵ·lî — WLC · 8

For they have gone up to Assyria like a wild donkey on its own… Ephraim has hired lovers.
𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤐𐤓𐤀 𐤁𐤅𐤃𐤃 𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤌
כִּֽי־ הֵ֙מָּה֙ עָל֣וּ אַשּׁ֔וּר פֶּ֖רֶא בּוֹדֵ֣ד ל֑וֹ אֶפְרַ֖יִם הִתְנ֥וּ אֲהָבִֽים kî- hêm·māh ‘ā·lū ’aš·šūr pe·re bō·w·ḏêḏ lōw ’ep̄·ra·yim hiṯ·nū ʾă·hå̄·ḇīm — WLC · 9

Though… they hire allies among the nations, I will now round them up, and they will begin to diminish under the oppression of the king of princes.

גַּ֛ם כִּֽי־ יִתְנ֥וּ בַגּוֹיִ֖ם עַתָּ֣ה אֲקַבְּצֵ֑ם וַיָּחֵ֣לּוּ מְּעָ֔ט מִמַּשָּׂ֖א מֶ֥לֶךְ שָׂרִֽים׃ gam kî- yiṯ·nū ḇag·gō·w·yim ‘at·tāh ’ă·qab·bə·ṣêm way·yā·ḥêl·lū mə·‘āṭ mim·maś·śā me·leḵ śā·rîm — WLC · 10

Though Ephraim multiplied the altars for sin, they became his altars for sinning.

כִּֽי־ אֶפְרַ֛יִם הִרְבָּ֥ה מִזְבְּחֹ֖ת לַחֲטֹ֑א הָיוּ־ ל֥וֹ מִזְבְּח֖וֹת לַחֲטֹֽא׃ kî- ’ep̄·ra·yim hir·bāh miz·bə·ḥōṯ la·ḥă·ṭō hā·yū- lōw miz·bə·ḥō·wṯ la·ḥă·ṭō — WLC · 11

Though I wrote for them… the great things of My law, they regarded them as something strange.
𐤀𐤊𐤕𐤅𐤁 𐤋𐤅 𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤍𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤊𐤌𐤅 𐤆𐤓
אֶכְתּוֹב ל֔וֹ רִבּוֹ תּֽוֹרָתִ֑י נֶחְשָֽׁבוּ׃ כְּמוֹ־ זָ֖ר ʾɛḵ·tōḇ lōw rib·bō tō·w·rā·ṯî neḥ·šā·ḇū kə·mōw- zār — WLC · 12

Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to Me, and [though they] eat the meat, the LORD does not accept them. Now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins: They will return to Egypt.

יִזְבְּח֤וּ זִבְחֵ֣י הַבְהָבַ֗י וַיֹּאכֵ֔לוּ בָשָׂר֙ יְהוָ֖ה לֹ֣א רָצָ֑ם עַתָּ֞ה יִזְכֹּ֤ר עֲוֺנָם֙ וְיִפְקֹ֣ד חַטֹּאותָ֔ם הֵ֖מָּה יָשֽׁוּבוּ׃ מִצְרַ֥יִם yiz·bə·ḥū ziḇ·ḥê haḇ·hā·ḇay way·yō·ḵê·lū ḇā·śār Yah·weh lō rā·ṣām ‘at·tāh yiz·kōr ‘ă·wō·nām wə·yip̄·qōḏ ḥaṭ·ṭō·w·ṯām hêm·māh yā·šū·ḇū miṣ·ra·yim — WLC · 13

Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces; Judah has multiplied its fortified cities. But I will send fire upon their cities, and it will consume their citadels.

יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֶת־ וַיִּשְׁכַּ֨ח עֹשֵׂ֗הוּ וַיִּ֙בֶן֙ הֵֽיכָל֔וֹת וִֽיהוּדָ֕ה הִרְבָּ֖ה בְּצֻר֑וֹת עָרִ֣ים וְשִׁלַּחְתִּי־ אֵ֣שׁ בְּעָרָ֔יו וְאָכְלָ֖ה אַרְמְנֹתֶֽיהָ׃ס yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- way·yiš·kaḥ ‘ō·śê·hū way·yi·ḇen hê·ḵā·lō·wṯ wî·hū·ḏāh hir·bāh bə·ṣu·rō·wṯ ‘ā·rîm wə·šil·laḥ·tî- ’êš bə·‘ā·rāw wə·’ā·ḵə·lāh ’ar·mə·nō·ṯe·hā — WLC · 14
