Chapter 6
The Unrepentance of Israel and Judah
1
Come, let us return to the LORD. For He has torn us to pieces, but He will heal us; He has wounded us, but He will bind up our wounds.
𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤈𐤓𐤐 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤐𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤅
לְכוּ֙ וְנָשׁ֣וּבָה אֶל־ יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֛י ה֥וּא טָרָ֖ף וְיִרְפָּאֵ֑נוּ יַ֖ךְ וְיַחְבְּשֵֽׁנוּ׃ lə·ḵū wə·nā·šū·ḇāh ’el- Yah·weh kî hū ṭā·rāp̄ wə·yir·pā·’ê·nū yaḵ wə·yaḥ·bə·šê·nū — WLC · 1

After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will raise us up, that we may live in His presence.
𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤒𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅
מִיֹּמָ֑יִם יְחַיֵּ֖נוּ הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י בַּיּוֹם֙ יְקִמֵ֖נוּ וְנִחְיֶ֥ה לְפָנָֽיו׃ mî·yō·mā·yim yə·ḥay·yê·nū haš·šə·lî·šî bay·yō·wm yə·qi·mê·nū wə·niḥ·yeh lə·p̄ā·nāw — WLC · 2

So let us know— let us press on to know the LORD. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the rain, like the spring showers that water the earth.

וְנֵדְעָ֣ה נִרְדְּפָ֗ה לָדַ֙עַת֙ אֶת־ יְהוָ֔ה נָכ֣וֹן כְּשַׁ֖חַר מֽוֹצָא֑וֹ וְיָב֤וֹא לָ֔נוּ כַגֶּ֙שֶׁם֙ כְּמַלְק֖וֹשׁ י֥וֹרֶה אָֽרֶץ׃ wə·nê·ḏə·‘āh nir·də·p̄āh lā·ḏa·‘aṯ ’eṯ- Yah·weh nā·ḵō·wn kə·ša·ḥar mō·w·ṣā·’ōw wə·yā·ḇō·w lā·nū ḵag·ge·šem kə·mal·qō·wōš yō·w·reh ’ā·reṣ — WLC · 3

What shall I do with you, O Ephraim What shall I do with you, O Judah? For your loyalty is like a morning mist, like the early dew that vanishes.
𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤎𐤃𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤊𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤈𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤊
מָ֤ה אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־ לְּךָ֙ אֶפְרַ֔יִם מָ֥ה אֶעֱשֶׂה־ לְּךָ֖ יְהוּדָ֑ה וְחַסְדְּכֶם֙ בֹּ֔קֶר כַּֽעֲנַן־ מַשְׁכִּ֥ים וְכַטַּ֖ל הֹלֵֽךְ׃ māh ’e·‘ĕ·śeh- lə·ḵā ’ep̄·ra·yim māh ’e·‘ĕ·śeh- lə·ḵā yə·hū·ḏāh wə·ḥas·də·ḵem bō·qer ka·‘ă·nan- maš·kîm wə·ḵaṭ·ṭal hō·lêḵ — WLC · 4

Therefore… I have hewn [them] by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of My mouth, and My judgments go forth like lightning.
𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤇𐤑𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤐𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤀𐤅𐤓
עַל־ כֵּ֗ן חָצַ֙בְתִּי֙ בַּנְּבִיאִ֔ים הֲרַגְתִּ֖ים בְּאִמְרֵי־ פִ֑י וּמִשְׁפָּטֶ֖יךָ יֵצֵֽא׃ א֥וֹר ‘al- kên ḥā·ṣaḇ·tî ban·nə·ḇî·’îm hă·raḡ·tîm bə·’im·rê- p̄î ū·miš·pā·ṭe·ḵā yê·ṣê ’ō·wr — WLC · 5

For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
𐤊𐤉 𐤇𐤐𐤑𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤎𐤃 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕
כִּ֛י חָפַ֖צְתִּי חֶ֥סֶד וְלֹא־ זָ֑בַח וְדַ֥עַת אֱלֹהִ֖ים מֵעֹלֽוֹת׃ kî ḥā·p̄aṣ·tî ḥe·seḏ wə·lō- zā·ḇaḥ wə·ḏa·‘aṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîm mê·‘ō·lō·wṯ — WLC · 6

But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant; there they were unfaithful to Me.
𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤊𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤔𐤌 𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤅 𐤁𐤉
וְהֵ֕מָּה כְּאָדָ֖ם עָבְר֣וּ בְרִ֑ית שָׁ֖ם בָּ֥גְדוּ בִֽי׃ wə·hêm·māh kə·’ā·ḏām ‘ā·ḇə·rū ḇə·rîṯ šām bā·ḡə·ḏū ḇî — WLC · 7

Gilead is a city of evildoers…, tracked with footprints of blood.
𐤂𐤋𐤏𐤃 𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤒𐤁𐤄 𐤌𐤃𐤌
גִּלְעָ֕ד קִרְיַ֖ת פֹּ֣עֲלֵי אָ֑וֶן עֲקֻבָּ֖ה מִדָּֽם׃ gil·‘āḏ qir·yaṯ pō·‘ă·lê ’ā·wen ‘ă·qub·bāh mid·dām — WLC · 8

Like raiders who lie in ambush…, [so does] a band of priests; they murder on the way to Shechem; surely they have committed atrocities.

גְּדוּדִ֗ים וּכְחַכֵּ֨י אִ֜ישׁ חֶ֚בֶר כֹּֽהֲנִ֔ים יְרַצְּחוּ־ דֶּ֖רֶךְ שֶׁ֑כְמָה כִּ֥י עָשֽׂוּ׃ זִמָּ֖ה gə·ḏū·ḏîm ū·ḵə·ḥak·kê ’îš ḥe·ḇer kō·hă·nîm yə·raṣ·ṣə·ḥū- de·reḵ šeḵ·māh kî ‘ā·śū zim·māh — WLC · 9

In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing: Ephraim practices prostitution there, [and] Israel is defiled.

בְּבֵית֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל רָאִ֖יתִי שַׁעֲרִירִיָּה לְאֶפְרַ֔יִם זְנ֣וּת שָׁ֚ם יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ נִטְמָ֖א bə·ḇêṯ yiś·rā·’êl rā·’î·ṯî ša·ʿă·rī·rī·yå̄h lə·’ep̄·ra·yim zə·nūṯ šām yiś·rā·’êl niṭ·mā — WLC · 10

Also for you, O Judah, a harvest is appointed, when I restore My people from captivity.
