Israel’s Adultery Rebuked

[“]Say of your brothers, ‘My people,’ and of your sisters, ‘My loved one.’
𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤓𐤇𐤌𐤄
אִמְר֥וּ לַאֲחֵיכֶ֖ם עַמִּ֑י וְלַאֲחֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם רֻחָֽמָה׃ ’im·rū la·’ă·ḥê·ḵem ‘am·mî wə·la·’ă·ḥō·w·ṯê·ḵem ru·ḥā·māh — WLC · 1

Rebuke your mother, rebuke her, for she is not My wife, and I am not her husband. Let her remove the adultery from her face and the unfaithfulness from between her breasts.

רִ֤יבוּ בְאִמְּכֶם֙ רִ֔יבוּ כִּֽי־ הִיא֙ לֹ֣א אִשְׁתִּ֔י וְאָנֹכִ֖י לֹ֣א אִישָׁ֑הּ וְתָסֵ֤ר זְנוּנֶ֙יהָ֙ מִפָּנֶ֔יה וְנַאֲפוּפֶ֖יהָ מִבֵּ֥ין שָׁדֶֽיהָ׃ rî·ḇū ḇə·’im·mə·ḵem rî·ḇū kî- hî lō ’iš·tî wə·’ā·nō·ḵî lō ’î·šāh wə·ṯā·sêr zə·nū·ne·hā mip·på̄·nɛh wə·na·’ă·p̄ū·p̄e·hā mib·bên šā·ḏe·hā — WLC · 2

Otherwise, I will strip her naked and expose her like the day of her birth. I will make her like a desert and turn her into a parched land, and I will let her die of thirst.

- I will have no compassion on her children, because they are the children of adultery.

וְאֶת־ לֹ֣א אֲרַחֵ֑ם בָּנֶ֖יהָ כִּֽי־ הֵֽמָּה׃ בְנֵ֥י זְנוּנִ֖ים wə·’eṯ- lō ’ă·ra·ḥêm bā·ne·hā kî- hêm·māh ḇə·nê zə·nū·nîm — WLC · 4

For their mother has played the harlot and has conceived them in disgrace. For she thought, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me bread and water, wool and linen, oil and drink.’

כִּ֤י אִמָּ֔ם זָֽנְתָה֙ הֽוֹרָתָ֑ם הֹבִ֖ישָׁה כִּ֣י אָמְרָ֗ה אֵלְכָ֞ה אַחֲרֵ֤י מְאַהֲבַי֙ נֹתְנֵ֤י לַחְמִי֙ וּמֵימַ֔י צַמְרִ֣י וּפִשְׁתִּ֔י שַׁמְנִ֖י וְשִׁקּוּיָֽי׃ kî ’im·mām zā·nə·ṯāh hō·w·rā·ṯām hō·ḇî·šāh kî ’ā·mə·rāh ’ê·lə·ḵāh ’a·ḥă·rê mə·’a·hă·ḇay nō·ṯə·nê laḥ·mî ū·mê·may ṣam·rî ū·p̄iš·tî šam·nî wə·šiq·qū·yāy — WLC · 5

Therefore, behold, I will hedge up her path with thorns; I will enclose her with a wall -, so she cannot find her way.

לָכֵ֛ן הִנְנִי־ שָׂ֥ךְ אֶת־ דַּרְכֵּ֖ךְ בַּסִּירִ֑ים וְגָֽדַרְתִּי֙ אֶת־ גְּדֵרָ֔הּ לֹ֥א תִמְצָֽא׃ וּנְתִיבוֹתֶ֖יהָ lā·ḵên hin·nî- śāḵ ’eṯ- dar·kêḵ bas·sî·rîm wə·ḡā·ḏar·tî ’eṯ- gə·ḏê·rāh lō ṯim·ṣā ū·nə·ṯî·ḇō·w·ṯe·hā — WLC · 6

She will pursue her lovers but not catch them; she will seek them but not find them. Then she will say,… ‘I will return to my first husband, for then I was better off… than now.’

וְרִדְּפָ֤ה אֶת־ מְאַהֲבֶ֙יהָ֙ וְלֹֽא־ תַשִּׂ֣יג אֹתָ֔ם וּבִקְשָׁ֖תַם וְלֹ֣א תִמְצָ֑א וְאָמְרָ֗ה אֵלְכָ֤ה וְאָשׁ֙וּבָה֙ אֶל־ הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן אִישִׁ֣י כִּ֣י אָ֖ז ט֥וֹב לִ֛י מֵעָֽתָּה׃ wə·rid·də·p̄āh ’eṯ- mə·’a·hă·ḇe·hā wə·lō- ṯaś·śîḡ ’ō·ṯām ū·ḇiq·šā·ṯam wə·lō ṯim·ṣā wə·’ā·mə·rāh ’ê·lə·ḵāh wə·’ā·šū·ḇāh ’el- hā·ri·šō·wn ’î·šî kî ’āz ṭō·wḇ lî mê·‘āt·tāh — WLC · 7

For she does not acknowledge that it was I who gave her grain, new wine, and oil, who lavished on her silver and gold— which they crafted for Baal.
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤂𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤑𐤄𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤎𐤐 𐤅𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤏𐤋
וְהִיא֙ לֹ֣א יָֽדְעָ֔ה כִּ֤י אָֽנֹכִי֙ נָתַ֣תִּי לָ֔הּ הַדָּגָ֖ן וְהַתִּיר֣וֹשׁ וְהַיִּצְהָ֑ר הִרְבֵּ֥יתִי לָ֛הּ וְכֶ֨סֶף וְזָהָ֖ב עָשׂ֥וּ לַבָּֽעַל׃ wə·hî lō yā·ḏə·‘āh kî ’ā·nō·ḵî nā·ṯat·tî lāh had·dā·ḡān wə·hat·tî·rō·wōš wə·hay·yiṣ·hār hir·bê·ṯî lāh wə·ḵe·sep̄ wə·zā·hāḇ ‘ā·śū lab·bā·‘al — WLC · 8

Therefore I will take back… My grain in its time and My new wine in its season; I will take away My wool and linen, which were [given] to cover her nakedness.
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤃𐤂𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤑𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤐𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤊𐤎𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤄
לָכֵ֣ן אָשׁ֔וּב וְלָקַחְתִּ֤י דְגָנִי֙ בְּעִתּ֔וֹ וְתִירוֹשִׁ֖י בְּמֽוֹעֲד֑וֹ וְהִצַּלְתִּי֙ צַמְרִ֣י וּפִשְׁתִּ֔י לְכַסּ֖וֹת אֶת־ עֶרְוָתָֽהּ׃ lā·ḵên ’ā·šūḇ wə·lā·qaḥ·tî ḏə·ḡā·nî bə·‘it·tōw wə·ṯî·rō·wō·šî bə·mō·w·‘ă·ḏōw wə·hiṣ·ṣal·tî ṣam·rî ū·p̄iš·tî lə·ḵas·sō·wṯ ’eṯ- ‘er·wā·ṯāh — WLC · 9

And then I will expose her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no one will deliver her out of My hands.
𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤂𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤑𐤉𐤋𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤉
וְעַתָּ֛ה אֲגַלֶּ֥ה אֶת־ נַבְלֻתָ֖הּ לְעֵינֵ֣י מְאַהֲבֶ֑יהָ לֹֽא־ וְאִ֖ישׁ יַצִּילֶ֥נָּה מִיָּדִֽי׃ wə·‘at·tāh ’ă·ḡal·leh ’eṯ- naḇ·lu·ṯāh lə·‘ê·nê mə·’a·hă·ḇe·hā lō- wə·’îš yaṣ·ṣî·len·nāh mî·yā·ḏî — WLC · 10

I will put an end to all her exultation: her feasts, New Moons, and Sabbaths— all her appointed feasts.
𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤅𐤔𐤄 𐤇𐤂𐤄 𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃𐤄
וְהִשְׁבַּתִּי֙ כָּל־ מְשׂוֹשָׂ֔הּ חַגָּ֖הּ חָדְשָׁ֣הּ וְשַׁבַּתָּ֑הּ וְכֹ֖ל מוֹעֲדָֽהּ׃ wə·hiš·bat·tî kāl- mə·śō·w·śāh ḥag·gāh ḥā·ḏə·šāh wə·šab·bat·tāh wə·ḵōl mō·w·‘ă·ḏāh — WLC · 11

I will destroy her vines and fig trees, which she thinks are the wages paid by her lovers. So I will make them into a thicket, and the beasts of the field will devour them.
𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤂𐤐𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤍𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤏𐤓 𐤇𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤕𐤌
וַהֲשִׁמֹּתִ֗י גַּפְנָהּ֙ וּתְאֵ֣נָתָ֔הּ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָמְרָ֗ה הֵ֙מָּה֙ לִ֔י אֶתְנָ֥ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָֽתְנוּ־ לִ֖י מְאַֽהֲבָ֑י וְשַׂמְתִּ֣ים לְיַ֔עַר חַיַּ֥ת הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ וַאֲכָלָ֖תַם wa·hă·šim·mō·ṯî gap̄·nāh ū·ṯə·’ê·nā·ṯāh ’ă·šer ’ā·mə·rāh hêm·māh lî ’eṯ·nāh ’ă·šer nā·ṯə·nū- lî mə·’a·hă·ḇāy wə·śam·tîm lə·ya·‘ar ḥay·yaṯ haś·śā·ḏeh wa·’ă·ḵā·lā·ṯam — WLC · 12

I will punish her for the days of the Baals when she burned incense to them,… when she adorned herself with rings and jewelry, and went after her lovers. But Me she forgot,” declares the LORD.

וּפָקַדְתִּ֣י עָלֶ֗יהָ אֶת־ יְמֵ֤י הַבְּעָלִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תַּקְטִ֣יר לָהֶ֔ם וַתַּ֤עַד נִזְמָהּ֙ וְחֶלְיָתָ֔הּ וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ אַחֲרֵ֣י מְאַהֲבֶ֑יהָ וְאֹתִ֥י שָׁכְחָ֖ה נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃פ ū·p̄ā·qaḏ·tî ‘ā·le·hā ’eṯ- yə·mê hab·bə·‘ā·lîm ’ă·šer taq·ṭîr lā·hem wat·ta·‘aḏ niz·māh wə·ḥel·yā·ṯāh wat·tê·leḵ ’a·ḥă·rê mə·’a·hă·ḇe·hā wə·’ō·ṯî šā·ḵə·ḥāh nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 13

“Therefore, behold, I will allure her and lead her to the wilderness, and speak to her tenderly.
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤄
לָכֵ֗ן הִנֵּ֤ה אָֽנֹכִי֙ מְפַתֶּ֔יהָ וְהֹֽלַכְתִּ֖יהָ הַמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְדִבַּרְתִּ֖י עַל לִבָּֽהּ׃ lā·ḵên hin·nêh ’ā·nō·ḵî mə·p̄at·te·hā wə·hō·laḵ·tî·hā ham·miḏ·bār wə·ḏib·bar·tî ʿal lib·bāh — WLC · 14

There I will give back her vineyards and make the Valley of Achor into a gateway of hope. There she will respond as she did in the days of her youth, as in the day she came up out of Egypt.

מִשָּׁ֔ם וְאֶת־ וְנָתַ֨תִּי כְּרָמֶ֙יהָ֙ לָ֤הּ אֶת־ עֵ֥מֶק עָכ֖וֹר לְפֶ֣תַח תִּקְוָ֑ה שָּׁ֙מָּה֙ וְעָ֤נְתָה כִּימֵ֣י נְעוּרֶ֔יהָ וִּכְי֖וֹם עֲלֹתָ֥הּ מֵאֶֽרֶץ־ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ס miš·šām wə·’eṯ- wə·nā·ṯat·tî kə·rā·me·hā lāh ’eṯ- ‘ê·meq ‘ā·ḵō·wr lə·p̄e·ṯaḥ tiq·wāh šām·māh wə·‘ā·nə·ṯāh kî·mê nə·‘ū·re·hā wiḵ·yōm ‘ă·lō·ṯāh mê·’e·reṣ- miṣ·rā·yim — WLC · 15

- In that day,” declares the LORD, “you will call Me ‘my Husband,’ and no longer call Me ‘my Master.’
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤉 𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤉
וְהָיָ֤ה הַהוּא֙ בַיּוֹם־ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה תִּקְרְאִ֖י אִישִׁ֑י וְלֹֽא־ ע֖וֹד תִקְרְאִי־ לִ֥י בַּעְלִֽי׃ wə·hā·yāh ha·hū ḇay·yō·wm- nə·’um- Yah·weh tiq·rə·’î ’î·šî wə·lō- ‘ō·wḏ ṯiq·rə·’î- lî ba‘·lî — WLC · 16

For I will remove from her lips the names of the Baals; no longer will their names be invoked.

וַהֲסִרֹתִ֛י אֶת־ מִפִּ֑יהָ שְׁמ֥וֹת הַבְּעָלִ֖ים וְלֹֽא־ ע֖וֹד בִּשְׁמָֽם׃ יִזָּכְר֥וּ wa·hă·si·rō·ṯî ’eṯ- mip·pî·hā šə·mō·wṯ hab·bə·‘ā·lîm wə·lō- ‘ō·wḏ biš·mām yiz·zā·ḵə·rū — WLC · 17

On that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field [and] the birds of the air and the creatures that crawl on the ground. And I will abolish bow and sword and battle in the land, and will make them lie down in safety.

So I will betroth you to Me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in loving devotion and compassion.

And I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will know the LORD.”

“- On that day I will respond—” declares the LORD— “I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth.

And the earth will respond to the grain, to the new wine and oil, and they will respond to Jezreel.

וְהָאָ֣רֶץ תַּעֲנֶ֔ה אֶת־ הַדָּגָ֖ן וְאֶת־ הַתִּיר֣וֹשׁ וְאֶת־ הַיִּצְהָ֑ר וְהֵ֖ם יַעֲנ֥וּ אֶֽת־ יִזְרְעֶֽאל׃ wə·hā·’ā·reṣ ta·‘ă·neh ’eṯ- had·dā·ḡān wə·’eṯ- hat·tî·rō·wōš wə·’eṯ- hay·yiṣ·hār wə·hêm ya·‘ă·nū ’eṯ- yiz·rə·‘el — WLC · 22

And I will sow her as My own in the land, and I will have compassion on ‘No Compassion.’ I will say to those [called] ‘Not My People,’ ‘You are My people,’ and they will say, ‘You are my God.’”
