Chapter 12

A Reproof of Ephraim, Judah, and Jacob

1

Ephraim feeds on the wind and pursues the east wind all day long; he multiplies lies and violence; he makes a covenant with Assyria and sends olive oil to Egypt.

𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤓𐤃𐤐 𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤊𐤆𐤁 𐤅𐤔𐤃 𐤉𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤉𐤅𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤍 𐤋𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌

אֶפְרַ֜יִם רֹעֶ֥ה ר֙וּחַ֙ וְרֹדֵ֣ף קָדִ֔ים כָּל־ הַיּ֕וֹם יַרְבֶּ֑ה כָּזָ֥ב וָשֹׁ֖ד יִכְרֹ֔תוּ וּבְרִית֙ עִם־ אַשּׁ֣וּר יוּבָֽל׃ וְשֶׁ֖מֶן לְמִצְרַ֥יִם ’ep̄·ra·yim rō·‘eh rū·aḥ wə·rō·ḏêp̄ qā·ḏîm kāl- hay·yō·wm yar·beh kā·zāḇ wā·šōḏ yiḵ·rō·ṯū ū·ḇə·rîṯ ‘im- ’aš·šūr yū·ḇāl wə·še·men lə·miṣ·ra·yimWLC · 1

The LORD has a charge to bring against Judah. He will punish… Jacob according to his ways and repay him according to his deeds.

𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤐𐤒𐤃 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤊𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤅

לַֽיהוָ֖ה וְרִ֥יב עִם־ יְהוּדָ֑ה וְלִפְקֹ֤ד עַֽל־ יַעֲקֹב֙ כִּדְרָכָ֔יו יָשִׁ֥יב לֽוֹ׃ כְּמַעֲלָלָ֖יו Yah·weh wə·rîḇ ‘im- yə·hū·ḏāh wə·lip̄·qōḏ ‘al- ya·‘ă·qōḇ kiḏ·rā·ḵāw yā·šîḇ lōw kə·ma·‘ă·lā·lāwWLC · 2

In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel, and in his vigor he wrestled with God.

𐤁𐤁𐤈𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌

בַּבֶּ֖טֶן אָחִ֑יו עָקַ֣ב אֶת־ וּבְאוֹנ֖וֹ שָׂרָ֥ה אֶת־ אֱלֹהִֽים׃ bab·be·ṭen ’ā·ḥîw ‘ā·qaḇ ’eṯ- ū·ḇə·’ō·w·nōw śā·rāh ’eṯ- ’ĕ·lō·hîmWLC · 3

Yes, he struggled with the angel and prevailed; he wept and sought His favor he found Him at Bethel and spoke with Him there

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤇𐤍𐤍 𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤌

וָיָּ֤שַׂר אֶל־ מַלְאָךְ֙ וַיֻּכָ֔ל בָּכָ֖ה וַיִּתְחַנֶּן־ ל֑וֹ בֵּֽית־ יִמְצָאֶ֔נּוּ אֵל֙ יְדַבֵּ֥ר עִמָּֽנוּ׃ וְשָׁ֖ם wāy·yā·śar ’el- mal·’āḵ way·yu·ḵāl bā·ḵāh way·yiṯ·ḥan·nen- lōw bêṯ- yim·ṣā·’en·nū ’êl yə·ḏab·bêr ‘im·mā·nū wə·šāmWLC · 4

the LORD God of Hosts, the LORD is His name of renown.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤅

וַֽיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י הַצְּבָא֑וֹת יְהוָ֖ה זִכְרֽוֹ׃ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê haṣ·ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ Yah·weh ziḵ·rōwWLC · 5

But you must return to your God; maintain love and justice, and always wait on your God.

𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤁𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤇𐤎𐤃 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊

וְאַתָּ֖ה תָשׁ֑וּב בֵּאלֹהֶ֣יךָ שְׁמֹ֔ר חֶ֤סֶד וּמִשְׁפָּט֙ תָּמִֽיד׃ וְקַוֵּ֥ה אֶל־ אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ wə·’at·tāh ṯā·šūḇ bê·lō·he·ḵā šə·mōr ḥe·seḏ ū·miš·pāṭ tā·mîḏ wə·qaw·wêh ’el- ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵāWLC · 6

A merchant loves to defraud with dishonest scales in his hands.

𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤄𐤁 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤒 𐤌𐤓𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤅

כְּנַ֗עַן אָהֵֽב׃ לַעֲשֹׁ֥ק מִרְמָ֖ה מֹאזְנֵ֥י בְּיָד֛וֹ kə·na·‘an ’ā·hêḇ la·‘ă·šōq mir·māh mō·zə·nê bə·yā·ḏōwWLC · 7

And Ephraim boasts: “… How rich I have become! I have found wealth for myself. In all my labors, they can find in me no iniquity that [is] sinful.”

אֶפְרַ֔יִם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אַ֣ךְ עָשַׁ֔רְתִּי מָצָ֥אתִי א֖וֹן לִ֑י כָּל־ יְגִיעַ֕י יִמְצְאוּ־ לִ֖י לֹ֥א עָוֺ֥ן אֲשֶׁר־ חֵֽטְא׃ ’ep̄·ra·yim way·yō·mer ’aḵ ‘ā·šar·tî mā·ṣā·ṯî ’ō·wn lî kāl- yə·ḡî·‘ay yim·ṣə·’ū- lî lō ‘ā·wōn ’ă·šer- ḥêṭWLC · 8

But I [am] the LORD your God ever since the land of Egypt. I will again make you dwell… in tents, as in the days of the appointed feast.

𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤊 𐤏𐤃 𐤁𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃

וְאָנֹכִ֛י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם אוֹשִֽׁיבְךָ֥ עֹ֛ד בָאֳהָלִ֖ים כִּימֵ֥י מוֹעֵֽד׃ wə·’ā·nō·ḵî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim ’ō·wō·šî·ḇə·ḵā ‘ōḏ ḇā·’o·hā·lîm kî·mê mō·w·‘êḏWLC · 9

I spoke through the prophets and multiplied their visions; I gave parables through the prophets.

𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤆𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤌

וְדִבַּ֙רְתִּי֙ עַל־ הַנְּבִיאִ֔ים וְאָנֹכִ֖י הִרְבֵּ֑יתִי חָז֣וֹן אֲדַמֶּֽה׃ וּבְיַ֥ד הַנְּבִיאִ֖ים wə·ḏib·bar·tî ‘al- han·nə·ḇî·’îm wə·’ā·nō·ḵî hir·bê·ṯî ḥā·zō·wn ’ă·ḏam·meh ū·ḇə·yaḏ han·nə·ḇî·’îmWLC · 10

Is there iniquity [in] Gilead? They will surely come to nothing. Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal? Indeed, their altars [will be] heaps of stones in the furrows of the field.

𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤂𐤋𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤅 𐤔𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤂𐤋𐤂𐤋 𐤂𐤌 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤕𐤋𐤌𐤉 𐤔𐤃𐤉

אִם־ אָ֙וֶן֙ גִּלְעָ֥ד אַךְ־ הָי֔וּ שָׁ֣וְא זִבֵּ֑חוּ שְׁוָרִ֣ים בַּגִּלְגָּ֖ל גַּ֤ם מִזְבְּחוֹתָם֙ כְּגַלִּ֔ים עַ֖ל תַּלְמֵ֥י שָׂדָֽי׃ ’im- ’ā·wen gil·‘āḏ ’aḵ- hā·yū šāw zib·bê·ḥū šə·wā·rîm bag·gil·gāl gam miz·bə·ḥō·w·ṯām kə·ḡal·lîm ‘al tal·mê śā·ḏāyWLC · 11

Jacob fled to the land of Aram and Israel worked for a wife— for a wife he tended [sheep].

𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤓𐤇 𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤁𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤓

יַעֲקֹ֖ב וַיִּבְרַ֥ח שְׂדֵ֣ה אֲרָ֑ם יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיַּעֲבֹ֤ד בְּאִשָּׁ֔ה וּבְאִשָּׁ֖ה שָׁמָֽר׃ ya·‘ă·qōḇ way·yiḇ·raḥ śə·ḏêh ’ă·rām yiś·rā·’êl way·ya·‘ă·ḇōḏ bə·’iš·šāh ū·ḇə·’iš·šāh šā·mārWLC · 12

But by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet he was preserved.

𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤍𐤔𐤌𐤓

וּבְנָבִ֕יא יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־ הֶעֱלָ֧ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וּבְנָבִ֖יא נִשְׁמָֽר׃ ū·ḇə·nā·ḇî Yah·weh ’eṯ- he·‘ĕ·lāh yiś·rā·’êl mim·miṣ·rā·yim ū·ḇə·nā·ḇî niš·mārWLC · 13

Ephraim has provoked bitter anger, so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt upon him and repay him for his contempt.

אֶפְרַ֖יִם תַּמְרוּרִ֑ים הִכְעִ֥יס אֲדֹנָֽיו׃ יִטּ֔וֹשׁ וְדָמָיו֙ עָלָ֣יו יָשִׁ֥יב ל֖וֹ וְחֶ֨רְפָּת֔וֹ ’ep̄·ra·yim tam·rū·rîm hiḵ·‘îs ’ă·ḏō·nāw yiṭ·ṭō·wōš wə·ḏā·māw ‘ā·lāw yā·šîḇ lōw wə·ḥer·pā·ṯōwWLC · 14
