Chapter 10

Retribution for Israel’s Sin

1

Israel was a luxuriant vine, yielding fruit for himself. The more his fruit increased, the more he increased the altars. The better his land produced, the better he made the sacred pillars.

𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤅𐤒𐤒 𐤂𐤐𐤍 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤄 𐤐𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤌𐤑𐤁𐤅𐤕

יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בּוֹקֵק֙ גֶּ֤פֶן יְשַׁוֶּה־ פְּרִ֖י לּ֑וֹ לְפִרְי֗וֹ כְּרֹ֣ב הִרְבָּה֙ לַֽמִּזְבְּח֔וֹת כְּט֣וֹב לְאַרְצ֔וֹ הֵיטִ֖יבוּ מַצֵּבֽוֹת׃ yiś·rā·’êl bō·w·qêq ge·p̄en yə·šaw·weh- pə·rî lōw lə·p̄ir·yōw kə·rōḇ hir·bāh lam·miz·bə·ḥō·wṯ kə·ṭō·wḇ lə·’ar·ṣōw hê·ṭî·ḇū maṣ·ṣê·ḇō·wṯWLC · 1

Their hearts are devious; now they must bear their guilt. The LORD will break down their altars and demolish their sacred pillars.

𐤋𐤁𐤌 𐤇𐤋𐤒 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤏𐤓𐤐 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤃𐤃 𐤌𐤑𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌

לִבָּ֖ם חָלַ֥ק עַתָּ֣ה יֶאְשָׁ֑מוּ ה֚וּא יַעֲרֹ֣ף מִזְבְּחוֹתָ֔ם יְשֹׁדֵ֖ד מַצֵּבוֹתָֽם׃ lib·bām ḥā·laq ‘at·tāh ye’·šā·mū hū ya·‘ă·rōp̄ miz·bə·ḥō·w·ṯām yə·šō·ḏêḏ maṣ·ṣê·ḇō·w·ṯāmWLC · 2

Surely now they will say, “We have no king, for we do not revere the LORD. What can a king do for us?”

𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤅

כִּ֤י עַתָּה֙ יֹֽאמְר֔וּ לָ֑נוּ אֵ֥ין מֶ֖לֶךְ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יָרֵ֙אנוּ֙ אֶת־ יְהֹוָ֔ה מַה־ וְהַמֶּ֖לֶךְ יַּֽעֲשֶׂה־ לָּֽנוּ׃ kî ‘at·tāh yō·mə·rū lā·nū ’ên me·leḵ kî lō yā·rê·nū ’eṯ- ha·šēm mah- wə·ham·me·leḵ ya·‘ă·śeh- lā·nūWLC · 3

They speak mere words; with false oaths they make covenants. So judgment springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of a field.

𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤓𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤇 𐤊𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤏𐤋 𐤕𐤋𐤌𐤉 𐤔𐤃𐤉

דִּבְּר֣וּ דְבָרִ֔ים שָׁ֖וְא אָל֥וֹת כָּרֹ֣ת בְּרִ֑ית מִשְׁפָּ֔ט וּפָרַ֤ח כָּרֹאשׁ֙ עַ֖ל תַּלְמֵ֥י שָׂדָֽי׃ dib·bə·rū ḏə·ḇā·rîm šāw ’ā·lō·wṯ kā·rōṯ bə·rîṯ miš·pāṭ ū·p̄ā·raḥ kā·rōš ‘al tal·mê śā·ḏāyWLC · 4

The people of Samaria will fear for the calf of Beth-aven. Indeed, its people will mourn over it with its idolatrous priests those who rejoiced in its glory— for it has been taken from them into exile

שְׁכַ֣ן שֹֽׁמְר֑וֹן יָג֖וּרוּ לְעֶגְלוֹת֙ בֵּ֣ית אָ֔וֶן כִּי־ עַמּ֗וֹ אָבַ֨ל עָלָ֜יו וּכְמָרָיו֙ עָלָ֣יו יָגִ֔ילוּ עַל־ כְּבוֹד֖וֹ כִּֽי־ גָלָ֥ה מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ šə·ḵan šō·mə·rō·wn yā·ḡū·rū lə·‘eḡ·lō·wṯ bêṯ ’ā·wen kî- ‘am·mōw ’ā·ḇal ‘ā·lāw ū·ḵə·mā·rāw ‘ā·lāw yā·ḡî·lū ‘al- kə·ḇō·w·ḏōw kî- ḡā·lāh mim·men·nūWLC · 5

Yes, it will be carried to Assyria as tribute to the great king. Ephraim will be seized with shame; Israel will be ashamed of its wooden idols.

גַּם־ אוֹתוֹ֙ יוּבָ֔ל לְאַשּׁ֣וּר מִנְחָ֖ה יָרֵ֑ב לְמֶ֣לֶךְ אֶפְרַ֣יִם יִקָּ֔ח בָּשְׁנָה֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְיֵב֥וֹשׁ מֵעֲצָתֽוֹ׃ gam- ’ō·w·ṯōw yū·ḇāl lə·’aš·šūr min·ḥāh yā·rêḇ lə·me·leḵ ’ep̄·ra·yim yiq·qāḥ bā·šə·nāh yiś·rā·’êl wə·yê·ḇō·wōš mê·‘ă·ṣā·ṯōwWLC · 6

Samaria will be carried off [with] her king like a twig on the surface of the water.

𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤍𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤄 𐤊𐤒𐤑𐤐 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤉𐤌

שֹׁמְר֖וֹן נִדְמֶ֥ה מַלְכָּ֑הּ כְּקֶ֖צֶף עַל־ פְּנֵי־ מָֽיִם׃ šō·mə·rō·wn niḏ·meh mal·kāh kə·qe·ṣep̄ ‘al- pə·nê- mā·yimWLC · 7

The high places of Aven will be destroyed— [it is] the sin of Israel; thorns and thistles will overgrow… their altars. Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall on us!”

בָּמ֣וֹת אָ֗וֶן וְנִשְׁמְד֞וּ חַטַּאת֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל ק֣וֹץ וְדַרְדַּ֔ר יַעֲלֶ֖ה עַל־ מִזְבְּחוֹתָ֑ם וְאָמְר֤וּ לֶֽהָרִים֙ כַּסּ֔וּנוּ וְלַגְּבָע֖וֹת נִפְל֥וּ עָלֵֽינוּ׃ס bā·mō·wṯ ’ā·wen wə·niš·mə·ḏū ḥaṭ·ṭaṯ yiś·rā·’êl qō·wṣ wə·ḏar·dar ya·‘ă·leh ‘al- miz·bə·ḥō·w·ṯām wə·’ā·mə·rū le·hā·rîm kas·sū·nū wə·lag·gə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ nip̄·lū ‘ā·lê·nūWLC · 8

Since the days of Gibeah you have sinned, O Israel, and there you have remained. Did not the battle in Gibeah overtake the sons of iniquity?

𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤂𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤂𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤄

מִימֵי֙ הַגִּבְעָ֔ה חָטָ֖אתָ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל שָׁ֣ם עָמָ֔דוּ לֹֽא־ מִלְחָמָ֖ה בַּגִּבְעָ֛ה תַשִּׂיגֵ֧ם עַל־ בְּנֵ֥י עַֽלְוָֽה׃ mî·mê hag·giḇ·‘āh ḥā·ṭā·ṯā yiś·rā·’êl šām ‘ā·mā·ḏū lō- mil·ḥā·māh bag·giḇ·‘āh ṯaś·śî·ḡêm ‘al- bə·nê ‘al·wāhWLC · 9

I will chasten them when I please; nations will be gathered against them to put them in bondage for their double transgression.

וְאֶסֳּרֵ֑ם בְּאַוָּתִ֖י עַמִּ֔ים וְאֻסְּפ֤וּ עֲלֵיהֶם֙ בְּאָסְרָ֖ם לִשְׁתֵּ֥י עֵינֹתָם׃ wə·’es·so·rêm bə·’aw·wā·ṯî ‘am·mîm wə·’us·sə·p̄ū ‘ă·lê·hem bə·’ā·sə·rām liš·tê ʿē·nō·ṯå̄mWLC · 10

Ephraim is a well-trained heifer that loves to thresh; but I will place a yoke on her fair neck. I will harness Ephraim, Judah will plow, [and] Jacob will break the hard ground

וְאֶפְרַ֜יִם מְלֻמָּדָה֙ עֶגְלָ֤ה אֹהַ֣בְתִּי לָד֔וּשׁ וַאֲנִ֣י עָבַ֔רְתִּי עַל־ ט֖וּב צַוָּארָ֑הּ אַרְכִּ֤יב אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ יְהוּדָ֔ה יַחֲר֣וֹשׁ יַעֲקֹֽב׃ יְשַׂדֶּד־ ל֖וֹ wə·’ep̄·ra·yim mə·lum·mā·ḏāh ‘eḡ·lāh ’ō·haḇ·tî lā·ḏūš wa·’ă·nî ‘ā·ḇar·tî ‘al- ṭūḇ ṣaw·wā·rāh ’ar·kîḇ ’ep̄·ra·yim yə·hū·ḏāh ya·ḥă·rō·wōš ya·‘ă·qōḇ yə·śad·deḏ- lōwWLC · 11

Sow for yourselves righteousness and reap the fruit… of loving devotion; break up your unplowed ground. For [it is] time to seek the LORD until He comes and sends righteousness upon you like rain.

זִרְע֨וּ לָכֶ֤ם לִצְדָקָה֙ קִצְר֣וּ לְפִי־ חֶ֔סֶד נִ֥ירוּ לָכֶ֖ם נִ֑יר וְעֵת֙ לִדְר֣וֹשׁ אֶת־ יְהוָ֔ה עַד־ יָב֕וֹא צֶ֖דֶק לָכֶֽם׃ וְיֹרֶ֥ה zir·‘ū lā·ḵem liṣ·ḏā·qāh qiṣ·rū lə·p̄î- ḥe·seḏ nî·rū lā·ḵem nîr wə·‘êṯ liḏ·rō·wōš ’eṯ- Yah·weh ‘aḏ- yā·ḇō·w ṣe·ḏeq lā·ḵem wə·yō·rehWLC · 12

You have plowed wickedness and reaped injustice; you have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you have trusted in your own way and in the multitude of your mighty men,

𐤇𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤌 𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤒𐤑𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤕𐤌 𐤐𐤓𐤉 𐤊𐤇𐤔 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤈𐤇𐤕 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤊 𐤁𐤓𐤁 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤊

חֲרַשְׁתֶּם־ רֶ֛שַׁע קְצַרְתֶּ֖ם עַוְלָ֥תָה אֲכַלְתֶּ֣ם פְּרִי־ כָ֑חַשׁ כִּֽי־ בָטַ֥חְתָּ בְדַרְכְּךָ֖ בְּרֹ֥ב גִּבּוֹרֶֽיךָ׃ ḥă·raš·tem- re·ša‘ qə·ṣar·tem ‘aw·lā·ṯāh ’ă·ḵal·tem pə·rî- ḵā·ḥaš kî- ḇā·ṭaḥ·tā ḇə·ḏar·kə·ḵā bə·rōḇ gib·bō·w·re·ḵāWLC · 13

the roar of battle will rise against your people, so that all your fortresses will be demolished as Shalman devastated Beth-arbel in the day of battle, when mothers were dashed to pieces along with their children.

שָׁאוֹן֮ וְקָ֣אם בְּעַמֶּךָ֒ וְכָל־ מִבְצָרֶ֣יךָ יוּשַּׁ֔ד שַֽׁלְמַ֛ן בֵּ֥ית כְּשֹׁ֧ד אַֽרְבֵ֖אל בְּי֣וֹם מִלְחָמָ֑ה אֵ֥ם רֻטָּֽשָׁה׃ עַל־ בָּנִ֖ים šā·’ō·wn wə·qām bə·‘am·me·ḵā wə·ḵāl miḇ·ṣā·re·ḵā yūš·šaḏ šal·man bêṯ kə·šōḏ ’ar·ḇêl bə·yō·wm mil·ḥā·māh ’êm ruṭ·ṭā·šāh ‘al- bā·nîmWLC · 14

Thus it will be done to you, vvv O Bethel, because of your great wickedness. When the day dawns, the king of Israel will be utterly cut off…
