Chapter 8

Daniel’s Vision of the Ram and the Goat

1

In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar, a vision appeared to me,… Daniel, subsequent to the one that had appeared to me earlier.

𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤔 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤋𐤀𐤔𐤑𐤓 𐤇𐤆𐤅𐤍 𐤍𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤕𐤇𐤋𐤄

שָׁל֔וֹשׁ בִּשְׁנַ֣ת לְמַלְכ֖וּת הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ בֵּלְאשַׁצַּ֣ר חָז֞וֹן נִרְאָ֤ה אֵלַי֙ אֲנִ֣י דָנִיֵּ֔אל אַחֲרֵ֛י הַנִּרְאָ֥ה אֵלַ֖י בַּתְּחִלָּֽה׃ šā·lō·wōš biš·naṯ lə·mal·ḵūṯ ham·me·leḵ bê·lə·šaṣ·ṣar ḥā·zō·wn nir·’āh ’ê·lay ’ă·nî ḏā·nî·yêl ’a·ḥă·rê han·nir·’āh ’ê·lay bat·tə·ḥil·lāhWLC · 1

And in the vision I saw myself in the citadel of Susa, in the province of Elam. I saw in the vision that I was beside the Ulai Canal.

בֶּחָזוֹן֒ וָֽאֶרְאֶה֮ וַיְהִי֙ בִּרְאֹתִ֔י וַאֲנִי֙ הַבִּירָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּשׁוּשַׁ֣ן הַמְּדִינָ֑ה בְּעֵילָ֣ם וָאֶרְאֶה֙ בֶּֽחָז֔וֹן וַאֲנִ֥י הָיִ֖יתִי עַל־ אוּלָֽי׃ אוּבַ֥ל be·ḥā·zō·wn wā·’er·’eh way·hî bir·’ō·ṯî wa·’ă·nî hab·bî·rāh ’ă·šer bə·šū·šan ham·mə·ḏî·nāh bə·‘ê·lām wā·’er·’eh be·ḥā·zō·wn wa·’ă·nî hā·yî·ṯî ‘al- ’ū·lāy ’ū·ḇalWLC · 2

Then I lifted up my eyes and saw - a ram with two horns standing beside the canal. The horns were long, but one was longer than the other, and the longer one grew up later.

𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤋𐤅 𐤒𐤓𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤁𐤄𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤂𐤁𐤄𐤄 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤂𐤁𐤄𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤍𐤄

וָאֶשָּׂ֤א עֵינַי֙ וָאֶרְאֶ֔ה וְהִנֵּ֣ה׀ אֶחָ֗ד אַ֣יִל וְל֣וֹ קְרָנָ֑יִם עֹמֵ֛ד לִפְנֵ֥י הָאֻבָ֖ל וְהַקְּרָנַ֣יִם גְּבֹה֗וֹת וְהָאַחַת֙ גְּבֹהָ֣ה מִן־ הַשֵּׁנִ֔ית וְהַ֨גְּבֹהָ֔ה עֹלָ֖ה בָּאַחֲרֹנָֽה׃ wā·’eś·śā ‘ê·nay wā·’er·’eh wə·hin·nêh ’e·ḥāḏ ’a·yil wə·lōw qə·rā·nā·yim ‘ō·mêḏ lip̄·nê hā·’u·ḇāl wə·haq·qə·rā·na·yim gə·ḇō·hō·wṯ wə·hā·’a·ḥaṯ gə·ḇō·hāh min- haš·šê·nîṯ wə·hag·gə·ḇō·hāh ‘ō·lāh bā·’a·ḥă·rō·nāhWLC · 3

I saw the ram charging toward the west and the north and the south. No… animal could stand against him, and there was no deliverance from his power. He did as he pleased and became great.

רָאִ֣יתִי אֶת־ הָאַ֡יִל מְנַגֵּחַ֩ יָ֨מָּה וְצָפ֜וֹנָה וָנֶ֗גְבָּה וְכָל־ לֹֽא־ חַיּוֹת֙ יַֽעַמְד֣וּ לְפָנָ֔יו וְאֵ֥ין מַצִּ֖יל מִיָּד֑וֹ וְעָשָׂ֥ה כִרְצֹנ֖וֹ וְהִגְדִּֽיל׃ rā·’î·ṯî ’eṯ- hā·’a·yil mə·nag·gê·aḥ yām·māh wə·ṣā·p̄ō·w·nāh wā·neḡ·bāh wə·ḵāl lō- ḥay·yō·wṯ ya·‘am·ḏū lə·p̄ā·nāw wə·’ên maṣ·ṣîl mî·yā·ḏōw wə·‘ā·śāh ḵir·ṣō·nōw wə·hiḡ·dîlWLC · 4

As I was contemplating all this, suddenly a goat with a prominent horn between his eyes… came out of the west, crossing the surface of the entire earth without touching the ground.

וַאֲנִ֣י׀ הָיִ֣יתִי מֵבִ֗ין וְהִנֵּ֤ה צְפִיר־ וְהַ֨צָּפִ֔יר חָז֖וּת קֶ֥רֶן בֵּ֥ין עֵינָֽיו׃ הָֽעִזִּים֙ בָּ֤א מִן־ הַֽמַּעֲרָב֙ עַל־ פְּנֵ֣י כָל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ וְאֵ֥ין נוֹגֵ֖עַ בָּאָ֑רֶץ wa·’ă·nî hā·yî·ṯî mê·ḇîn wə·hin·nêh ṣə·p̄îr- wə·haṣ·ṣā·p̄îr ḥā·zūṯ qe·ren bên ‘ê·nāw hā·‘iz·zîm bā min- ham·ma·‘ă·rāḇ ‘al- pə·nê ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣ wə·’ên nō·w·ḡê·a‘ bā·’ā·reṣWLC · 5

He came toward the two-horned ram… I had seen standing beside the canal and rushed at him with furious power.

𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤌𐤕 𐤊𐤇𐤅

וַיָּבֹ֗א עַד־ הַקְּרָנַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָאַ֙יִל֙ בַּ֣עַל רָאִ֔יתִי עֹמֵ֖ד לִפְנֵ֣י הָאֻבָ֑ל וַיָּ֥רָץ אֵלָ֖יו בַּחֲמַ֥ת כֹּחֽוֹ׃ way·yā·ḇō ‘aḏ- haq·qə·rā·na·yim ’ă·šer hā·’a·yil ba·‘al rā·’î·ṯî ‘ō·mêḏ lip̄·nê hā·’u·ḇāl way·yā·rāṣ ’ê·lāw ba·ḥă·maṯ kō·ḥōwWLC · 6

I saw him approach… the ram in a rage against him, and he struck the ram and shattered his two horns. The ram was vvv powerless to stand against him, and the goat threw him to the ground and trampled him, [and] no one could deliver the ram from his power.

𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤂𐤉𐤏 𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤌𐤓𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤒𐤓𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤇 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤎𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤑𐤉𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤋 𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤅

וּרְאִיתִ֞יו מַגִּ֣יעַ׀ אֵ֣צֶל הָאַ֗יִל וַיִּתְמַרְמַ֤ר אֵלָיו֙ וַיַּ֣ךְ אֶת־ הָאַ֔יִל וַיְשַׁבֵּר֙ אֶת־ שְׁתֵּ֣י קְרָנָ֔יו בָּאַ֖יִל הָ֥יָה וְלֹא־ כֹ֛חַ לַעֲמֹ֣ד לְפָנָ֑יו וַיַּשְׁלִיכֵ֤הוּ אַ֙רְצָה֙ וַֽיִּרְמְסֵ֔הוּ הָיָ֥ה וְלֹא־ מַצִּ֛יל לָאַ֖יִל מִיָּדֽוֹ׃ ū·rə·’î·ṯîw mag·gî·a‘ ’ê·ṣel hā·’a·yil way·yiṯ·mar·mar ’ê·lāw way·yaḵ ’eṯ- hā·’a·yil way·šab·bêr ’eṯ- šə·tê qə·rā·nāw bā·’a·yil hā·yāh wə·lō- ḵō·aḥ la·‘ă·mōḏ lə·p̄ā·nāw way·yaš·lî·ḵê·hū ’ar·ṣāh way·yir·mə·sê·hū hā·yāh wə·lō- maṣ·ṣîl lā·’a·yil mî·yā·ḏōwWLC · 7

Thus the goat… became very great, but at the height of his power, his large horn was broken off, and four prominent horns came up in its place, pointing toward the four winds of heaven.

𐤅𐤑𐤐𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤆𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤊𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤍 𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 𐤇𐤆𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤏𐤋𐤍𐤄 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌

וּצְפִ֥יר הָעִזִּ֖ים עַד־ מְאֹ֑ד הִגְדִּ֣יל וּכְעָצְמ֗וֹ הַגְּדוֹלָ֔ה הַקֶּ֣רֶן נִשְׁבְּרָה֙ אַרְבַּע֙ חָז֤וּת וַֽתַּעֲלֶ֜נָה תַּחְתֶּ֔יהָ לְאַרְבַּ֖ע רוּח֥וֹת הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ ū·ṣə·p̄îr hā·‘iz·zîm ‘aḏ- mə·’ōḏ hiḡ·dîl ū·ḵə·‘ā·ṣə·mōw hag·gə·ḏō·w·lāh haq·qe·ren niš·bə·rāh ’ar·ba‘ ḥā·zūṯ wat·ta·‘ă·le·nāh taḥ·te·hā lə·’ar·ba‘ rū·ḥō·wṯ haš·šā·mā·yimWLC · 8

From one of [these horns] a little horn emerged and grew extensively toward the south and the east… and toward the Beautiful Land.

𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤄 𐤒𐤓𐤍 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤅𐤕𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤉𐤕𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤂𐤁 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤓𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤑𐤁𐤉

וּמִן־ הָאַחַ֣ת מֵהֶ֔ם אַחַ֖ת מִצְּעִירָ֑ה קֶֽרֶן־ יָצָ֥א וַתִּגְדַּל־ יֶ֛תֶר אֶל־ הַנֶּ֥גֶב הַמִּזְרָ֖ח וְאֶל־ וְאֶל־ הַצֶּֽבִי׃ ū·min- hā·’a·ḥaṯ mê·hem ’a·ḥaṯ miṣ·ṣə·‘î·rāh qe·ren- yā·ṣā wat·tiḡ·dal- ye·ṯer ’el- han·ne·ḡeḇ ham·miz·rāḥ wə·’el- wə·’el- haṣ·ṣe·ḇîWLC · 9

It grew as high as the host of heaven, and it cast down some of the host and [some] of the stars to the earth and trampled them.

𐤅𐤕𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤏𐤃 𐤑𐤁𐤀 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤐𐤋 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤑𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤊𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤌𐤎𐤌

וַתִּגְדַּ֖ל עַד־ צְבָ֣א הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וַתַּפֵּ֥ל מִן־ הַצָּבָ֥א וּמִן־ הַכּוֹכָבִ֖ים אַ֛רְצָה וַֽתִּרְמְסֵֽם׃ wat·tiḡ·dal ‘aḏ- ṣə·ḇā haš·šā·mā·yim wat·tap·pêl min- haṣ·ṣā·ḇā ū·min- hak·kō·w·ḵā·ḇîm ’ar·ṣāh wat·tir·mə·sêmWLC · 10

It magnified itself,… even to the Prince of the host; it removed His daily sacrifice and overthrew the place of His sanctuary.

𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤑𐤁𐤀 𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤊𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤅

הִגְדִּ֑יל וּמִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ וְעַ֥ד שַֽׂר־ הַצָּבָ֖א הֵרִים הַתָּמִ֔יד וְהֻשְׁלַ֖ךְ מְכ֥וֹן מִקְדָּשֽׁוֹ׃ hiḡ·dîl ū·mim·men·nū wə·‘aḏ śar- haṣ·ṣā·ḇā hē·rīm hat·tā·mîḏ wə·huš·laḵ mə·ḵō·wn miq·dā·šōwWLC · 11

And in the rebellion, the host [and] the daily sacrifice were given over [to the horn], and it flung truth to the ground and prospered in whatever it did.

𐤁𐤐𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤑𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤕𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤌𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤋𐤉𐤇𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤕𐤄

בְּפָ֑שַׁע וְצָבָ֛א עַל־ הַתָּמִ֖יד תִּנָּתֵ֥ן וְתַשְׁלֵ֤ךְ אֱמֶת֙ אַ֔רְצָה וְהִצְלִֽיחָה׃ וְעָשְׂתָ֖ה bə·p̄ā·ša‘ wə·ṣā·ḇā ‘al- hat·tā·mîḏ tin·nā·ṯên wə·ṯaš·lêḵ ’ĕ·meṯ ’ar·ṣāh wə·hiṣ·lî·ḥāh wə·‘ā·śə·ṯāhWLC · 12

Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy… one said to [him], “How long [until the fulfillment of] the vision of the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, and the surrender of the sanctuary and of the host to be trampled?”

𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤋𐤐𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤃 𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤆𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤔𐤏 𐤔𐤌𐤌 𐤕𐤕 𐤅𐤒𐤃𐤔 𐤅𐤑𐤁𐤀 𐤌𐤓𐤌𐤎

וָאֶשְׁמְעָ֥ה אֶֽחָד־ קָד֖וֹשׁ מְדַבֵּ֑ר אֶחָ֨ד קָד֜וֹשׁ לַפַּֽלְמוֹנִ֣י וַיֹּאמֶר֩ הַֽמְדַבֵּ֗ר עַד־ מָתַ֞י הֶחָז֤וֹן הַתָּמִיד֙ וְהַפֶּ֣שַׁע שֹׁמֵ֔ם תֵּ֛ת וְקֹ֥דֶשׁ וְצָבָ֖א מִרְמָֽס׃ wā·’eš·mə·‘āh ’e·ḥāḏ- qā·ḏō·wōš mə·ḏab·bêr ’e·ḥāḏ qā·ḏō·wōš lap·pal·mō·w·nî way·yō·mer ham·ḏab·bêr ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay he·ḥā·zō·wn hat·tā·mîḏ wə·hap·pe·ša‘ šō·mêm têṯ wə·qō·ḏeš wə·ṣā·ḇā mir·māsWLC · 13

He said to me, “It will take 2,300… evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be properly restored.”

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י עַ֚ד אַלְפַּ֖יִם וּשְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֑וֹת עֶ֣רֶב בֹּ֔קֶר קֹֽדֶשׁ׃ וְנִצְדַּ֖ק way·yō·mer ’ê·lay ‘aḏ ’al·pa·yim ū·šə·lōš mê·’ō·wṯ ‘e·reḇ bō·qer qō·ḏeš wə·niṣ·daqWLC · 14

Gabriel Interprets Daniel’s Vision

While I, Daniel, was watching the vision and trying to understand it, there stood before me one having the appearance of a man.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤆𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤒𐤔𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤍𐤂𐤃𐤉 𐤊𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤂𐤁𐤓

וַיְהִ֗י אֲנִ֥י דָנִיֵּ֖אל אֶת־ בִּרְאֹתִ֛י הֶחָז֑וֹן וָאֲבַקְשָׁ֣ה בִינָ֔ה וְהִנֵּ֛ה עֹמֵ֥ד לְנֶגְדִּ֖י כְּמַרְאֵה־ גָֽבֶר׃ way·hî ’ă·nî ḏā·nî·yêl ’eṯ- bir·’ō·ṯî he·ḥā·zō·wn wā·’ă·ḇaq·šāh ḇî·nāh wə·hin·nêh ‘ō·mêḏ lə·neḡ·dî kə·mar·’êh- ḡā·ḇerWLC · 15

And I heard the voice of a man calling… from between [the banks of] the Ulai: “Gabriel, explain the vision to this man.” -

וָאֶשְׁמַ֥ע קוֹל־ אָדָ֖ם וַיִּקְרָא֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר בֵּ֣ין אוּלָ֑י גַּבְרִיאֵ֕ל הָבֵ֥ן הַמַּרְאֶֽה׃ לְהַלָּ֖ז אֶת־ wā·’eš·ma‘ qō·wl- ’ā·ḏām way·yiq·rā way·yō·mar bên ’ū·lāy gaḇ·rî·’êl hā·ḇên ham·mar·’eh lə·hal·lāz ’eṯ-WLC · 16

As he came near to where I stood I was terrified and fell facedown… “Son of man,” he said to me, “understand that the vision concerns the time of the end.”

While he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep, with my face to the ground. Then he touched me, helped me to my feet…,

and said, “Behold, I will make known to you what will happen in the latter time of wrath, because it concerns the appointed time of the end.

The two-horned ram that you saw… represents the kings of Media and Persia.

The shaggy goat represents the king of Greece, and the large horn between his eyes is the first king.

הַשָּׂעִ֖יר וְהַצָּפִ֥יר מֶ֣לֶךְ יָוָ֑ן הַגְּדוֹלָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר וְהַקֶּ֤רֶן בֵּין־ עֵינָ֔יו ה֖וּא הָרִאשֽׁוֹן׃ הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ haś·śā·‘îr wə·haṣ·ṣā·p̄îr me·leḵ yā·wān hag·gə·ḏō·w·lāh ’ă·šer wə·haq·qe·ren bên- ‘ê·nāw hū hā·ri·šō·wn ham·me·leḵWLC · 21

The four [horns] that replaced the broken [one] represent four kingdoms that will rise from that nation… but will not have the same power.

In the latter part of their reign, when the rebellion has reached its full measure, an insolent… king, skilled in intrigue, will come to the throne.

His power will be great, but it… will not be his own. He will cause terrible destruction and succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy the mighty men along with the holy people.

כֹּחוֹ֙ וְעָצַ֤ם בְכֹח֔וֹ וְנִפְלָא֥וֹת וְלֹ֣א יַשְׁחִ֖ית וְהִצְלִ֣יחַ וְעָשָׂ֑ה וְהִשְׁחִ֥ית עֲצוּמִ֖ים קְדֹשִֽׁים׃ וְעַם־ kō·ḥōw wə·‘ā·ṣam ḇə·ḵō·ḥōw wə·nip̄·lā·’ō·wṯ wə·lō yaš·ḥîṯ wə·hiṣ·lî·aḥ wə·‘ā·śāh wə·hiš·ḥîṯ ‘ă·ṣū·mîm qə·ḏō·šîm wə·‘am-WLC · 24

Through his craft and by his hand, he will cause deceit to prosper, and in his own mind he will make himself great. In a time of peace he will destroy many, and he will even stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be broken off, but not by [human] hands.

וְעַל־ שִׂכְל֗וֹ בְּיָד֔וֹ מִרְמָה֙ וְהִצְלִ֤יחַ וּבִלְבָב֣וֹ יַגְדִּ֔יל וּבְשַׁלְוָ֖ה יַשְׁחִ֣ית רַבִּ֑ים יַעֲמֹ֔ד וְעַ֤ל־ שַׂר־ שָׂרִים֙ יִשָּׁבֵֽר׃ וּבְאֶ֥פֶס יָ֖ד wə·‘al- śiḵ·lōw bə·yā·ḏōw mir·māh wə·hiṣ·lî·aḥ ū·ḇil·ḇā·ḇōw yaḡ·dîl ū·ḇə·šal·wāh yaš·ḥîṯ rab·bîm ya·‘ă·mōḏ wə·‘al- śar- śā·rîm yiš·šā·ḇêr ū·ḇə·’e·p̄es yāḏWLC · 25

The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been spoken is true… Now you must seal up the vision, for it concerns the distant future.”

I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay ill for days. Then I got up and went about the king’s business. I was confounded by the vision; it was beyond understanding.
