The Plot against Daniel
1
Now it pleased Darius to appoint 120… satraps - to rule throughout the kingdom,
𐤔𐤐𐤓 𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤃𐤓𐤉𐤅𐤔 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤍 𐤃𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤔𐤃𐤓𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤀 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕𐤀 𐤋𐤄𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕𐤀
שְׁפַר֙ קֳדָ֣ם דָּרְיָ֔וֶשׁ וַהֲקִים֙ מְאָ֣ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֑ין דִּ֥י לַאֲחַשְׁדַּרְפְּנַיָּ֖א עַל־ מַלְכוּתָ֔א לֶהֱוֺ֖ן בְּכָל־ מַלְכוּתָֽא׃ šə·p̄ar qo·ḏām dā·rə·yā·weš wa·hă·qîm mə·’āh wə·‘eś·rîn dî la·’ă·ḥaš·dar·pə·nay·yā ‘al- mal·ḵū·ṯā le·hĕ·wōn bə·ḵāl mal·ḵū·ṯā — WLC · 1

and over them… three… administrators, including Daniel,… to whom these satraps… were accountable so that the king would not suffer loss.

Soon, by… his extraordinary spirit, Daniel… distinguished himself among the administrators and satraps So the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.

אֱדַ֙יִן֙ קֳבֵ֗ל דִּ֣י יַתִּירָא֙ בֵּ֔הּ ר֤וּחַ דָּנִיֵּ֣אל דְּנָ֔ה הֲוָ֣א מִתְנַצַּ֔ח עַל־ סָרְכַיָּ֖א וַאֲחַשְׁדַּרְפְּנַיָּ֑א כָּל־ וּמַלְכָּ֣א עֲשִׁ֔ית לַהֲקָמוּתֵ֖הּ עַל־ כָּל־ מַלְכוּתָֽא׃ ’ĕ·ḏa·yin qo·ḇêl dî yat·tî·rā bêh rū·aḥ dā·nî·yêl də·nāh hă·wā miṯ·naṣ·ṣaḥ ‘al- sā·rə·ḵay·yā wa·’ă·ḥaš·dar·pə·nay·yā kāl- ū·mal·kā ‘ă·šîṯ la·hă·qā·mū·ṯêh ‘al- kāl- mal·ḵū·ṯā — WLC · 3

Thus the administrators and satraps sought… a charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom, but they could find no… charge or corruption, because… he… was trustworthy, and no negligence or corruption was found in him.

אֱדַ֨יִן סָֽרְכַיָּ֜א וַאֲחַשְׁדַּרְפְּנַיָּ֗א הֲו֨וֹ בָעַ֧יִן לְהַשְׁכָּחָ֥ה עִלָּ֛ה לְדָנִיֵּ֖אל מִצַּ֣ד מַלְכוּתָ֑א יָכְלִ֣ין לְהַשְׁכָּחָ֗ה וְכָל־ לָא־ עִלָּ֨ה וּשְׁחִיתָ֜ה כָּל־ קֳבֵל֙ דִּֽי־ ה֔וּא וְכָל־ מְהֵימַ֣ן לָ֥א שָׁלוּ֙ וּשְׁחִיתָ֔ה הִשְׁתְּכַ֖חַת עֲלֽוֹהִי׃ ’ĕ·ḏa·yin sā·rə·ḵay·yā wa·’ă·ḥaš·dar·pə·nay·yā hă·wōw ḇā·‘a·yin lə·haš·kā·ḥāh ‘il·lāh lə·ḏā·nî·yêl miṣ·ṣaḏ mal·ḵū·ṯā yā·ḵə·lîn lə·haš·kā·ḥāh wə·ḵāl lā- ‘il·lāh ū·šə·ḥî·ṯāh kāl- qo·ḇêl dî- hū wə·ḵāl mə·hê·man lā šā·lū ū·šə·ḥî·ṯāh hiš·tə·ḵa·ḥaṯ ‘ă·lō·w·hî — WLC · 4

Finally these men said,… “We will never find any charge against this Daniel unless we find [something] against him concerning the law of his God.”

So the administrators and satraps… went together to the king… and said “O King Darius, may you live forever!

אֱ֠דַיִן סָרְכַיָּ֤א וַאֲחַשְׁדַּרְפְּנַיָּא֙ אִלֵּ֔ן הַרְגִּ֖שׁוּ עַל־ מַלְכָּ֑א וְכֵן֙ אָמְרִ֣ין לֵ֔הּ מַלְכָּ֖א דָּרְיָ֥וֶשׁ חֱיִֽי׃ לְעָלְמִ֥ין ’ĕ·ḏa·yin sā·rə·ḵay·yā wa·’ă·ḥaš·dar·pə·nay·yā ’il·lên har·gi·šū ‘al- mal·kā wə·ḵên ’ā·mə·rîn lêh mal·kā dā·rə·yā·weš ḥĕ·yî lə·‘ā·lə·mîn — WLC · 6

All the royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers, and governors have agreed that the king should establish an ordinance and enforce a decree that for thirty days anyone who petitions… any god or man except you,… O king, will be thrown into the den of lions.

כֹּ֣ל׀ מַלְכוּתָ֗א סָרְכֵ֣י סִגְנַיָּ֤א וַֽאֲחַשְׁדַּרְפְּנַיָּא֙ הַדָּֽבְרַיָּ֣א וּפַחֲוָתָ֔א אִתְיָעַ֜טוּ מַלְכָּ֔א לְקַיָּמָ֤ה קְיָם֙ וּלְתַקָּפָ֖ה אֱסָ֑ר דִּ֣י עַד־ תְּלָתִ֗ין יוֹמִ֣ין כָל־ דִּֽי־ יִבְעֵ֣ה בָ֠עוּ מִן־ כָּל־ אֱלָ֨הּ וֶֽאֱנָ֜שׁ לָהֵן֙ מִנָּ֣ךְ מַלְכָּ֔א יִתְרְמֵ֕א לְגֹ֖ב אַרְיָוָתָֽא׃ kōl mal·ḵū·ṯā sā·rə·ḵê siḡ·nay·yā wa·’ă·ḥaš·dar·pə·nay·yā had·dā·ḇə·ray·yā ū·p̄a·ḥă·wā·ṯā ’iṯ·yā·‘a·ṭū mal·kā lə·qay·yā·māh qə·yām ū·lə·ṯaq·qā·p̄āh ’ĕ·sār dî ‘aḏ- tə·lā·ṯîn yō·w·mîn ḵāl dî- yiḇ·‘êh ḇā·‘ū min- kāl- ’ĕ·lāh we·’ĕ·nāš lā·hên min·nāḵ mal·kā yiṯ·rə·mê lə·ḡōḇ ’ar·yā·wā·ṯā — WLC · 7

Therefore, O king, establish the decree and sign the document so that it cannot be changed— in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”

כְּעַ֣ן מַלְכָּ֔א תְּקִ֥ים אֱסָרָ֖א וְתִרְשֻׁ֣ם כְּתָבָ֑א דִּ֣י לָ֧א לְהַשְׁנָיָ֛ה כְּדָת־ מָדַ֥י וּפָרַ֖ס דִּי־ לָ֥א תֶעְדֵּֽא׃ kə·‘an mal·kā tə·qîm ’ĕ·sā·rā wə·ṯir·šum kə·ṯā·ḇā dî lā lə·haš·nā·yāh kə·ḏāṯ- mā·ḏay ū·p̄ā·ras dî- lā ṯe‘·dê — WLC · 8

Therefore… King Darius signed the written decree.

Daniel in the Lions’ Den

Now when Daniel learned that the document had been signed, he went into his house, where the windows of his upper room opened toward Jerusalem, and three times a day he got down on his knees, prayed, and gave thanks to his God,… just as… he had done before…

כְּדִ֨י וְ֠דָנִיֵּאל יְדַ֜ע דִּֽי־ כְּתָבָא֙ רְשִׁ֤ים עַ֣ל לְבַיְתֵ֔הּ וְכַוִּ֨ין לֵהּ֙ בְּעִלִּיתֵ֔הּ פְּתִיחָ֥ן נֶ֖גֶד יְרוּשְׁלֶ֑ם תְּלָתָ֨ה וְזִמְנִין֩ בְיוֹמָ֜א ה֣וּא׀ בָּרֵ֣ךְ עַל־ בִּרְכ֗וֹהִי וּמְצַלֵּ֤א וּמוֹדֵא֙ קֳדָ֣ם אֱלָהֵ֔הּ כָּל־ קֳבֵל֙ דִּֽי־ הֲוָ֣א עָבֵ֔ד מִן־ קַדְמַ֖ת דְּנָֽה׃ס kə·ḏî wə·ḏā·nî·yêl yə·ḏa‘ dî- kə·ṯā·ḇā rə·šîm ‘al lə·ḇay·ṯêh wə·ḵaw·wîn lêh bə·‘il·lî·ṯêh pə·ṯî·ḥān ne·ḡeḏ yə·rū·šə·lem tə·lā·ṯāh wə·zim·nîn ḇə·yō·w·mā hū bā·rêḵ ‘al- bir·ḵō·w·hî ū·mə·ṣal·lê ū·mō·w·ḏê qo·ḏām ’ĕ·lā·hêh kāl- qo·ḇêl dî- hă·wā ‘ā·ḇêḏ min- qaḏ·maṯ də·nāh — WLC · 10

Then these men went as a group and found Daniel petitioning and imploring… his God.
𐤀𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤋𐤊 𐤂𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤀 𐤄𐤓𐤂𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤊𐤇𐤅 𐤋𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤀 𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤇𐤍𐤍 𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤄
אֱ֠דַיִן אִלֵּךְ֙ גֻּבְרַיָּ֤א הַרְגִּ֔שׁוּ וְהַשְׁכַּ֖חוּ לְדָנִיֵּ֑אל בָּעֵ֥א וּמִתְחַנַּ֖ן קֳדָ֥ם אֱלָהֵֽהּ׃ ’ĕ·ḏa·yin ’il·lêḵ guḇ·ray·yā har·gi·šū wə·haš·ka·ḥū lə·ḏā·nî·yêl bā·‘ê ū·miṯ·ḥan·nan qo·ḏām ’ĕ·lā·hêh — WLC · 11

So they approached the king and asked… about his royal decree: “Did you not sign a decree that for thirty days any man who petitions… any god or man except you,… O king, will be thrown into the den of lions?” The king… replied, “According to the law of the Medes and Persians… the order stands, and it cannot be repealed.”

בֵּ֠אדַיִן קְרִ֨יבוּ מַלְכָּא֮ וְאָמְרִ֥ין קֳדָם־ עַל־ מַלְכָּא֒ אֱסָ֣ר הֲלָ֧א רְשַׁ֗מְתָּ אֱסָ֣ר דִּ֣י עַד־ תְּלָתִ֗ין יוֹמִ֣ין כָל־ אֱנָ֡שׁ דִּֽי־ יִבְעֵה֩ מִן־ כָּל־ אֱלָ֨הּ וֶֽאֱנָ֜שׁ לָהֵן֙ מִנָּ֣ךְ מַלְכָּ֔א יִתְרְמֵ֕א לְג֖וֹב אַרְיָותָ֑א מַלְכָּ֜א וְאָמַ֗ר עָנֵ֨ה כְּדָת־ מָדַ֥י וּפָרַ֖ס דִּי־ מִלְּתָ֛א יַצִּיבָ֧א לָ֥א תֶעְדֵּֽא׃ bê·ḏa·yin qə·rî·ḇū mal·kā wə·’ā·mə·rîn qo·ḏām- ‘al- mal·kā ’ĕ·sār hă·lā rə·šam·tā ’ĕ·sār dî ‘aḏ- tə·lā·ṯîn yō·w·mîn ḵāl ’ĕ·nāš dî- yiḇ·‘êh min- kāl- ’ĕ·lāh we·’ĕ·nāš lā·hên min·nāḵ mal·kā yiṯ·rə·mê lə·ḡō·wḇ ’ar·yā·w·ṯā mal·kā wə·’ā·mar ‘ā·nêh kə·ḏāṯ- mā·ḏay ū·p̄ā·ras dî- mil·lə·ṯā yaṣ·ṣî·ḇā lā ṯe‘·dê — WLC · 12

Then they told… the king, “Daniel, one of vvv the exiles… from Judah, shows no regard for you, O king, or for the decree that you have signed. He still makes his petition three times a day.”

- As soon as the king heard this, he was deeply distressed… and set [his] mind on delivering Daniel, and he labored until sundown… to rescue him.

Then the men approached… the king {together} and said to him, “Remember, O king, that by the law of the Medes and Persians… no decree or ordinance… established by the king can be changed.”

So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the den of lions. The king… said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually,… deliver you!”

A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that nothing… concerning Daniel could be changed.

Then the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting. No entertainment was brought before him, and sleep fled from him.

- At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried… to the den of lions.

When he reached the den, he cried out in a voice of anguish - vvv, “O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?”

Then Daniel replied -, “O king, may you live forever!

My God sent His angel and shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me,… for… I was found innocent in His sight, and I have done no wrong against you, O king.”

- The king was overjoyed… and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den, and when Daniel was lifted out of the den, no wounds whatsoever were found on him, because he had trusted in his God.

At the command of the king, the men who had falsely accused… Daniel were brought and thrown into the den of lions— they and their children and wives. And before they had reached the bottom of the den, - the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.

- I hereby decree that in every part of my kingdom [men are to] tremble in fear… before the God of Daniel: For He is the living God, and He endures forever…; His kingdom… will never be destroyed, and His dominion… will never end.
