The Razor of Judgment

[“]As for you, son of man, take a sharp sword, use it as a barber’s razor, and shave… your head… and beard. Then take a set of scales… and divide the hair.
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤒𐤇 𐤋𐤊 𐤇𐤃𐤄 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤕𐤒𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤂𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤒𐤋 𐤅𐤇𐤋𐤒𐤕𐤌
וְאַתָּ֨ה בֶן־ אָדָ֜ם קַח־ לְךָ֣׀ חַדָּ֗ה חֶ֣רֶב תִּקָּחֶ֣נָּה לָּ֔ךְ הַגַּלָּבִים֙ תַּ֤עַר וְהַעֲבַרְתָּ֥ עַל־ רֹאשְׁךָ֖ וְעַל־ זְקָנֶ֑ךָ וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ לְךָ֛ מֹאזְנֵ֥י מִשְׁקָ֖ל וְחִלַּקְתָּֽם׃ wə·’at·tāh ḇen- ’ā·ḏām qaḥ- lə·ḵā ḥad·dāh ḥe·reḇ tiq·qā·ḥen·nāh lāḵ hag·gal·lā·ḇîm ta·‘ar wə·ha·‘ă·ḇar·tā ‘al- rō·šə·ḵā wə·‘al- zə·qā·ne·ḵā wə·lā·qaḥ·tā lə·ḵā mō·zə·nê miš·qāl wə·ḥil·laq·tām — WLC · 1

When the days of the siege have ended, you are to burn up a third [of the hair]… inside the city; you are also to take a third and slash it with the sword all around the city; and you are to scatter a third to the wind. For I will unleash a sword behind them.

יְמֵ֣י הַמָּצ֑וֹר כִּמְלֹ֖את תַּבְעִיר֙ שְׁלִשִׁ֗ית בָּא֤וּר בְּת֣וֹךְ הָעִ֔יר וְלָֽקַחְתָּ֣ אֶת־ הַשְּׁלִשִׁ֗ית תַּכֶּ֤ה בַחֶ֙רֶב֙ סְבִ֣יבוֹתֶ֔יהָ תִּזְרֶ֣ה וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁית֙ לָר֔וּחַ אָרִ֥יק וְחֶ֖רֶב אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃ yə·mê ham·mā·ṣō·wr kim·lōṯ taḇ·‘îr šə·li·šîṯ bā·’ūr bə·ṯō·wḵ hā·‘îr wə·lā·qaḥ·tā ’eṯ- haš·šə·li·šîṯ tak·keh ḇa·ḥe·reḇ sə·ḇî·ḇō·w·ṯe·hā tiz·reh wə·haš·šə·li·šîṯ lā·rū·aḥ ’ā·rîq wə·ḥe·reḇ ’a·ḥă·rê·hem — WLC · 2

But you are to take… a few strands of hair and secure them in the folds of your garment.
𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤈 𐤁𐤌𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤑𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤊
וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ מִשָּׁ֖ם מְעַ֣ט בְּמִסְפָּ֑ר וְצַרְתָּ֥ אוֹתָ֖ם בִּכְנָפֶֽיךָ׃ wə·lā·qaḥ·tā miš·šām mə·‘aṭ bə·mis·pār wə·ṣar·tā ’ō·w·ṯām biḵ·nā·p̄e·ḵā — WLC · 3

Again, take a few of these, throw them into… the fire, and burn them -. From there a fire will spread to the whole house of Israel.

ע֣וֹד תִּקָּ֔ח וּמֵהֶם֙ וְהִשְׁלַכְתָּ֤ אוֹתָם֙ אֶל־ תּ֣וֹךְ הָאֵ֔שׁ וְשָׂרַפְתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם בָּאֵ֑שׁ מִמֶּ֥נּוּ אֵ֖שׁ תֵצֵא־ אֶל־ כָּל־ בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ ‘ō·wḏ tiq·qāḥ ū·mê·hem wə·hiš·laḵ·tā ’ō·w·ṯām ’el- tō·wḵ hā·’êš wə·śā·rap̄·tā ’ō·ṯām bā·’êš mim·men·nū ’êš ṯê·ṣê- ’el- kāl- bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 4

This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘This [is] Jerusalem, which I have set in the center of the nations, with countries all around her.
𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄
כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהֹוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ זֹ֚את יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם שַׂמְתִּ֑יהָ בְּת֥וֹךְ הַגּוֹיִ֖ם אֲרָצֽוֹת׃ וּסְבִיבוֹתֶ֖יהָ kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar zōṯ yə·rū·šā·lim śam·tî·hā bə·ṯō·wḵ hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ ū·sə·ḇî·ḇō·w·ṯe·hā — WLC · 5

But she has rebelled against My ordinances more wickedly than the nations, and against My statutes worse than the countries around her. For [her people] have rejected My ordinances and have not walked in My statutes.’
𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉 𐤋𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤒𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤎𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤎 𐤅𐤇𐤒𐤅𐤕𐤉
וַתֶּ֨מֶר אֶת־ מִשְׁפָּטַ֤י לְרִשְׁעָה֙ מִן־ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם וְאֶ֨ת־ חֻקּוֹתַ֔י מִן־ הָאֲרָצ֖וֹת אֲשֶׁ֣ר סְבִיבוֹתֶ֑יהָ כִּ֤י מָאָ֔סוּ בְמִשְׁפָּטַי֙ לֹא־ הָלְכ֥וּ בָהֶֽם׃ס וְחֻקּוֹתַ֖י wat·te·mer ’eṯ- miš·pā·ṭay lə·riš·‘āh min- hag·gō·w·yim wə·’eṯ- ḥuq·qō·w·ṯay min- hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ ’ă·šer sə·ḇî·ḇō·w·ṯe·hā kî mā·’ā·sū ḇə·miš·pā·ṭay lō- hā·lə·ḵū ḇā·hem wə·ḥuq·qō·w·ṯay — WLC · 6

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘- You have been more insubordinate than the nations around you; you have not walked in My statutes [or] kept My ordinances, nor have you even conformed to the ordinances of the nations around you.’
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤍𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤇𐤒𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤌𐤎 𐤅𐤊𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌
לָכֵ֞ן כֹּֽה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה אָמַ֣ר׀ יַ֤עַן הֲמָנְכֶם֙ מִן־ הַגּוֹיִם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר סְבִיבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֔ם לֹ֣א הֲלַכְתֶּ֔ם וְאֶת־ בְּחֻקּוֹתַי֙ לֹ֣א עֲשִׂיתֶ֑ם מִשְׁפָּטַ֖י לֹ֥א עֲשִׂיתֶֽם׃ס וּֽכְמִשְׁפְּטֵ֧י הַגּוֹיִ֛ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר סְבִיבוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם lā·ḵên kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ya·‘an hă·mā·nə·ḵem min- hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer sə·ḇî·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem lō hă·laḵ·tem wə·’eṯ- bə·ḥuq·qō·w·ṯay lō ‘ă·śî·ṯem miš·pā·ṭay lō ‘ă·śî·ṯem ū·ḵə·miš·pə·ṭê hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer sə·ḇî·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem — WLC · 7

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I Myself am… against you, [Jerusalem], and I will execute judgments among you in the sight of the nations.
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤂𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤊 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌
לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ הִנְנִ֥י אָ֑נִי גַּם־ עָלַ֖יִךְ וְעָשִׂ֧יתִי מִשְׁפָּטִ֖ים בְתוֹכֵ֛ךְ לְעֵינֵ֥י הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ lā·ḵên kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nî ’ā·nî gam- ‘ā·la·yiḵ wə·‘ā·śî·ṯî miš·pā·ṭîm ḇə·ṯō·w·ḵêḵ lə·‘ê·nê hag·gō·w·yim — WLC · 8

Because of all your abominations, I will do to you what I have never done before and will never do… again.

יַ֖עַן כָּל־ תּוֹעֲבֹתָֽיִךְ׃ס וְעָשִׂ֣יתִי בָ֗ךְ אֵ֚ת אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־ עָשִׂ֔יתִי וְאֵ֛ת אֲשֶֽׁר־ לֹֽא־ אֶעֱשֶׂ֥ה כָמֹ֖הוּ ע֑וֹד ya·‘an kāl- tō·w·‘ă·ḇō·ṯā·yiḵ wə·‘ā·śî·ṯî ḇāḵ ’êṯ ’ă·šer lō- ‘ā·śî·ṯî wə·’êṯ ’ă·šer- lō- ’e·‘ĕ·śeh ḵā·mō·hū ‘ō·wḏ — WLC · 9

As a result, fathers among you will eat their sons, and sons will eat their fathers. I will execute judgments against you and scatter all your remnant to every wind.’

לָכֵ֗ן אָב֞וֹת בְּתוֹכֵ֔ךְ יֹאכְל֤וּ בָנִים֙ וּבָנִ֖ים יֹאכְל֣וּ אֲבוֹתָ֑ם וְעָשִׂ֤יתִי שְׁפָטִ֔ים בָךְ֙ וְזֵרִיתִ֥י אֶת־ כָּל־ שְׁאֵרִיתֵ֖ךְ לְכָל־ רֽוּחַ׃פ lā·ḵên ’ā·ḇō·wṯ bə·ṯō·w·ḵêḵ yō·ḵə·lū ḇā·nîm ū·ḇā·nîm yō·ḵə·lū ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām wə·‘ā·śî·ṯî šə·p̄ā·ṭîm ḇāḵ wə·zê·rî·ṯî ’eṯ- kāl- šə·’ê·rî·ṯêḵ lə·ḵāl rū·aḥ — WLC · 10
Famine, Sword, and Dispersion

Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,… because you have defiled My sanctuary with all your detestable idols… and abominations, vvv I Myself will withdraw My favor; I will not look upon you with pity, [nor] will I… spare you.

לָכֵ֣ן אָ֗נִי חַי־ נְאֻם֮ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ אִם־ לֹ֗א יַ֚עַן אֶת־ טִמֵּ֔את מִקְדָּשִׁ֣י בְּכָל־ שִׁקּוּצַ֖יִךְ וּבְכָל־ תּוֹעֲבֹתָ֑יִךְ וְגַם־ אֲנִ֤י אֶגְרַע֙ עֵינִ֔י וְלֹא־ תָח֣וֹס וְגַם־ אֲנִ֖י לֹ֥א אֶחְמֽוֹל׃ lā·ḵên ’ā·nî ḥay- nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’im- lō ya·‘an ’eṯ- ṭim·mêṯ miq·dā·šî bə·ḵāl šiq·qū·ṣa·yiḵ ū·ḇə·ḵāl tō·w·‘ă·ḇō·ṯā·yiḵ wə·ḡam- ’ă·nî ’eḡ·ra‘ ‘ê·nî wə·lō- ṯā·ḥō·ws wə·ḡam- ’ă·nî lō ’eḥ·mō·wl — WLC · 11

A third of your people will die by plague or be consumed by famine within you, a third will fall by the sword outside [your walls], and a third I will scatter to every wind and unleash a sword behind them.

שְׁלִשִׁתֵ֞יךְ יָמ֗וּתוּ בַּדֶּ֣בֶר יִכְל֣וּ וּבָֽרָעָב֙ בְתוֹכֵ֔ךְ וְהַ֨שְּׁלִשִׁ֔ית יִפְּל֣וּ בַּחֶ֖רֶב סְבִיבוֹתָ֑יִךְ וְהַשְּׁלִישִׁית֙ אֱזָרֶ֔ה לְכָל־ ר֣וּחַ אָרִ֥יק וְחֶ֖רֶב אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃ šə·li·ši·ṯêḵ yā·mū·ṯū bad·de·ḇer yiḵ·lū ū·ḇā·rā·‘āḇ ḇə·ṯō·w·ḵêḵ wə·haš·šə·li·šîṯ yip·pə·lū ba·ḥe·reḇ sə·ḇî·ḇō·w·ṯā·yiḵ wə·haš·šə·lî·šîṯ ’ĕ·zā·reh lə·ḵāl rū·aḥ ’ā·rîq wə·ḥe·reḇ ’a·ḥă·rê·hem — WLC · 12

And when My anger is spent and I have vented My wrath against them, I will be appeased. And when I have spent My wrath on them, they will know that I, the LORD, in My zeal have spoken.

אַפִּ֗י וְכָלָ֣ה וַהֲנִחוֹתִ֧י חֲמָתִ֛י בָּ֖ם וְהִנֶּחָ֑מְתִּי בְּכַלּוֹתִ֥י חֲמָתִ֖י בָּֽם׃ וְֽיָדְע֞וּ כִּי־ אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֗ה בְּקִנְאָתִ֔י דִּבַּ֙רְתִּי֙ ’ap·pî wə·ḵā·lāh wa·hă·ni·ḥō·w·ṯî ḥă·mā·ṯî bām wə·hin·ne·ḥā·mə·tî bə·ḵal·lō·w·ṯî ḥă·mā·ṯî bām wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh bə·qin·’ā·ṯî dib·bar·tî — WLC · 13

I will make you a ruin and a disgrace among the nations around you, in the sight of all who pass by.

וְאֶתְּנֵךְ֙ לְחָרְבָּ֣ה וּלְחֶרְפָּ֔ה בַּגּוֹיִ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר סְבִיבוֹתָ֑יִךְ לְעֵינֵ֖י כָּל־ עוֹבֵֽר׃ wə·’et·tə·nêḵ lə·ḥā·rə·bāh ū·lə·ḥer·pāh bag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer sə·ḇî·ḇō·w·ṯā·yiḵ lə·‘ê·nê kāl- ‘ō·w·ḇêr — WLC · 14

So you will be a reproach and a taunt, a warning and a horror to the nations around you, when I execute judgments against you in anger, wrath, and raging fury. I, the LORD, have spoken.

When I shower you with the deadly arrows of famine [and]… destruction that I will send to destroy you, I will intensify the famine against you and cut off your supply of food.

I will send famine and wild beasts against you, and they will leave you childless. Plague and bloodshed will sweep through you, and I will bring a sword against you. I, the LORD, have spoken.”
