The Glory of the LORD Returns to the Temple
1
Then the man brought me back to the gate that faces… east,
𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤐𐤍𐤄 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌
וַיּוֹלִכֵ֖נִי אֶל־ הַשָּׁ֑עַר שַׁ֕עַר אֲשֶׁ֥ר פֹּנֶ֖ה דֶּ֥רֶךְ הַקָּדִֽים׃ way·yō·w·li·ḵê·nî ’el- haš·šā·‘ar ša·‘ar ’ă·šer pō·neh de·reḵ haq·qā·ḏîm — WLC · 1

and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of many waters, and the earth shone with His glory.

The vision I saw was like the vision - I had seen when He came to destroy the city and like the visions I had seen by the River Kebar. I fell facedown…,

and the glory of the LORD entered… the temple through the gate facing… east.

וּכְב֥וֹד יְהוָ֖ה בָּ֣א אֶל־ הַבָּ֑יִת דֶּ֣רֶךְ שַׁ֔עַר אֲשֶׁ֥ר פָּנָ֖יו דֶּ֥רֶךְ הַקָּדִֽים׃ ū·ḵə·ḇō·wḏ Yah·weh bā ’el- hab·bā·yiṯ de·reḵ ša·‘ar ’ă·šer pā·nāw de·reḵ haq·qā·ḏîm — WLC · 4

Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner… court, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.

ר֔וּחַ וַתִּשָּׂאֵ֣נִי וַתְּבִיאֵ֕נִי אֶל־ הַפְּנִימִ֑י וְהִנֵּ֛ה הֶֽחָצֵ֖ר כְבוֹד־ יְהוָ֖ה מָלֵ֥א הַבָּֽיִת׃ rū·aḥ wat·tiś·śā·’ê·nî wat·tə·ḇî·’ê·nî ’el- hap·pə·nî·mî wə·hin·nêh he·ḥā·ṣêr ḵə·ḇō·wḏ- Yah·weh mā·lê hab·bā·yiṯ — WLC · 5

While the man was standing beside me, I heard someone speaking to me from inside the temple,
𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤑𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕
וְאִ֕ישׁ הָיָ֥ה עֹמֵ֖ד אֶצְלִֽי׃ וָאֶשְׁמַ֛ע מִדַּבֵּ֥ר אֵלַ֖י מֵהַבָּ֑יִת wə·’îš hā·yāh ‘ō·mêḏ ’eṣ·lî wā·’eš·ma‘ mid·dab·bêr ’ê·lay mê·hab·bā·yiṯ — WLC · 6

and He said to me, “Son of man, this is the place of My throne and the place for the soles of My feet, where I will dwell… among the Israelites forever… The house of Israel will never again defile My holy name— neither they nor their kings— by their prostitution and by the funeral offerings for their kings at their deaths.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֗י בֶּן־ אָדָם֙ אֶת־ מְק֣וֹם כִּסְאִ֗י וְאֶת־ מְקוֹם֙ כַּפּ֣וֹת רַגְלַ֔י אֲשֶׁ֧ר אֶשְׁכָּן־ שָׁ֛ם בְּת֥וֹךְ בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְעוֹלָ֑ם בֵּֽית־ יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל וְלֹ֣א ע֣וֹד יְטַמְּא֣וּ קָדְשִׁ֞י שֵׁ֣ם הֵ֤מָּה וּמַלְכֵיהֶם֙ בִּזְנוּתָ֔ם וּבְפִגְרֵ֥י מַלְכֵיהֶ֖ם בָּמוֹתָֽם׃ way·yō·mer ’ê·lay ben- ’ā·ḏām ’eṯ- mə·qō·wm kis·’î wə·’eṯ- mə·qō·wm kap·pō·wṯ raḡ·lay ’ă·šer ’eš·kān- šām bə·ṯō·wḵ bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl lə·‘ō·w·lām bêṯ- yiś·rā·’êl wə·lō ‘ō·wḏ yə·ṭam·mə·’ū qāḏ·šî šêm hêm·māh ū·mal·ḵê·hem biz·nū·ṯām ū·ḇə·p̄iḡ·rê mal·ḵê·hem bā·mō·w·ṯām — WLC · 7

When they placed their threshold next to My threshold and their doorposts beside My doorposts, with only a wall between Me and them,… they defiled My holy name by the abominations they committed. Therefore I have consumed them in My anger.

בְּתִתָּ֨ם סִפָּ֜ם אֶת־ סִפִּ֗י וּמְזֽוּזָתָם֙ אֵ֣צֶל מְזוּזָתִ֔י וְהַקִּ֖יר בֵּינִ֣י וּבֵֽינֵיהֶ֑ם וְטִמְּא֣וּ׀ אֶת־ קָדְשִׁ֗י שֵׁ֣ם בְּתֽוֹעֲבוֹתָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשׂ֔וּ וָאֲכַ֥ל אֹתָ֖ם בְּאַפִּֽי׃ bə·ṯit·tām sip·pām ’eṯ- sip·pî ū·mə·zū·zā·ṯām ’ê·ṣel mə·zū·zā·ṯî wə·haq·qîr bê·nî ū·ḇê·nê·hem wə·ṭim·mə·’ū ’eṯ- qāḏ·šî šêm bə·ṯō·w·‘ă·ḇō·w·ṯām ’ă·šer ‘ā·śū wā·’ă·ḵal ’ō·ṯām bə·’ap·pî — WLC · 8

Now let them remove far from Me their prostitution and the funeral offerings for their kings, and I will dwell among them forever.

עַתָּ֞ה יְרַחֲק֧וּ אֶת־ מִמֶּ֑נִּי זְנוּתָ֛ם וּפִגְרֵ֥י מַלְכֵיהֶ֖ם וְשָׁכַנְתִּ֥י בְתוֹכָ֖ם לְעוֹלָֽם׃ס ‘at·tāh yə·ra·ḥă·qū ’eṯ- mim·men·nî zə·nū·ṯām ū·p̄iḡ·rê mal·ḵê·hem wə·šā·ḵan·tî ḇə·ṯō·w·ḵām lə·‘ō·w·lām — WLC · 9

As for you, son of man, describe the temple to the [people] of Israel, so that they may be ashamed of their iniquities. Let them measure the plan,
𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤂𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤌𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤃𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤊𐤍𐤉𐤕
אַתָּ֣ה בֶן־ אָדָ֗ם הַגֵּ֤ד אֶת־ בֵּֽית־ הַבַּ֔יִת יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶת־ וְיִכָּלְמ֖וּ מֵעֲוֺנֽוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם וּמָדְד֖וּ אֶת־ תָּכְנִֽית׃ ’at·tāh ḇen- ’ā·ḏām hag·gêḏ ’eṯ- bêṯ- hab·ba·yiṯ yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- wə·yik·kā·lə·mū mê·‘ă·wō·nō·w·ṯê·hem ū·mā·ḏə·ḏū ’eṯ- tā·ḵə·nîṯ — WLC · 10

and if they are ashamed of all they have done, [then] make known to them the design of the temple— its arrangement and its exits and entrances— its whole design along with all its statutes forms, and laws. Write it down in their sight, so that they may keep its complete design and all its statutes and may carry them out -.

וְאִֽם־ נִכְלְמ֞וּ מִכֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־ עָשׂ֗וּ הוֹדַ֣ע אוֹתָ֔ם צוּרַ֣ת הַבַּ֡יִת וּתְכוּנָת֡וֹ וּמוֹצָאָ֡יו וּמוֹבָאָ֣יו וְֽכָל־ צֽוּרֹתָ֡ו וְאֵ֣ת כָּל־ חֻקֹּתָיו֩ וְכָל־ צוּרֹתָי וְכָל־ תּוֹרֹתוֹ וּכְתֹ֖ב לְעֵֽינֵיהֶ֑ם וְיִשְׁמְר֞וּ אֶת־ כָּל־ צוּרָת֛וֹ וְאֶת־ כָּל־ חֻקֹּתָ֖יו וְעָשׂ֥וּ אוֹתָֽם׃ wə·’im- niḵ·lə·mū mik·kōl ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śū hō·w·ḏa‘ ’ō·w·ṯām ṣū·raṯ hab·ba·yiṯ ū·ṯə·ḵū·nā·ṯōw ū·mō·w·ṣā·’āw ū·mō·w·ḇā·’āw wə·ḵāl ṣū·rō·ṯå̄w wə·’êṯ kāl- ḥuq·qō·ṯāw wə·ḵāl ṣū·rō·ṯå̄y wə·ḵāl tō·rō·ṯō ū·ḵə·ṯōḇ lə·‘ê·nê·hem wə·yiš·mə·rū ’eṯ- kāl- ṣū·rā·ṯōw wə·’eṯ- kāl- ḥuq·qō·ṯāw wə·‘ā·śū ’ō·w·ṯām — WLC · 11

This is the law of the temple: All its surrounding… territory on top of the mountain will be most holy… Yes, this is the law of the temple.

זֹ֖את תּוֹרַ֣ת הַבָּ֑יִת כָּל־ סָבִ֤יב׀ סָבִיב֙ גְּבֻל֞וֹ עַל־ רֹ֣אשׁ הָ֠הָר קֹ֣דֶשׁ קָדָשִׁ֔ים הִנֵּה־ זֹ֖את תּוֹרַ֥ת הַבָּֽיִת׃ zōṯ tō·w·raṯ hab·bā·yiṯ kāl- sā·ḇîḇ sā·ḇîḇ gə·ḇu·lōw ‘al- rōš hā·hār qō·ḏeš qā·ḏā·šîm hin·nêh- zōṯ tō·w·raṯ hab·bā·yiṯ — WLC · 12
The Altar of Sacrifice

These are the measurements of the altar in long cubits (a cubit… and a handbreadth): Its gutter [shall be] a cubit deep and a cubit wide, with a rim… of one span around its edge. And this [is] the height of the altar:

וְאֵ֨לֶּה מִדּ֤וֹת הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ בָּֽאַמּ֔וֹת אַמָּ֥ה אַמָּ֖ה וָטֹ֑פַח וְחֵ֨יק הָאַמָּ֜ה וְאַמָּה־ רֹ֗חַב וּגְבוּלָ֨הּ אֶל־ הָאֶחָ֔ד זֶ֣רֶת סָבִיב֙ שְׂפָתָ֤הּ וְזֶ֖ה גַּ֥ב הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ wə·’êl·leh mid·dō·wṯ ham·miz·bê·aḥ bā·’am·mō·wṯ ’am·māh ’am·māh wā·ṭō·p̄aḥ wə·ḥêq hā·’am·māh wə·’am·māh- rō·ḥaḇ ū·ḡə·ḇū·lāh ’el- hā·’e·ḥāḏ ze·reṯ sā·ḇîḇ śə·p̄ā·ṯāh wə·zeh gaḇ ham·miz·bê·aḥ — WLC · 13

The space from the gutter on the ground to the lower ledge [shall be] two cubits, and [the ledge] one cubit wide. [The space] from the smaller ledge to the larger ledge [shall be] four cubits, and [the ledge] one cubit wide.

וּמֵחֵ֨יק הָאָ֜רֶץ עַד־ הַתַּחְתּוֹנָה֙ הָעֲזָרָ֤ה שְׁתַּ֣יִם אַמּ֔וֹת אֶחָ֑ת אַמָּ֣ה וְרֹ֖חַב הַקְּטַנָּ֜ה וּמֵהֳעֲזָרָ֨ה עַד־ הַגְּדוֹלָה֙ הָעֲזָרָ֤ה אַרְבַּ֣ע אַמּ֔וֹת הָאַמָּֽה׃ וְרֹ֖חַב ū·mê·ḥêq hā·’ā·reṣ ‘aḏ- hat·taḥ·tō·w·nāh hā·‘ă·zā·rāh šə·ta·yim ’am·mō·wṯ ’e·ḥāṯ ’am·māh wə·rō·ḥaḇ haq·qə·ṭan·nāh ū·mê·ho·‘ă·zā·rāh ‘aḏ- hag·gə·ḏō·w·lāh hā·‘ă·zā·rāh ’ar·ba‘ ’am·mō·wṯ hā·’am·māh wə·rō·ḥaḇ — WLC · 14

The altar hearth [shall be] four cubits [high], and four horns shall project upward from the hearth.

The altar hearth [shall be] square at its four corners, twelve [cubits]… long [and] twelve [cubits]… wide.

The ledge [shall also be] square…, fourteen [cubits]… long and fourteen [cubits]… wide, with a rim of half a cubit and a gutter of a cubit all around it -. The steps of the altar [shall] face east.”

Then He said to me: “Son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘These are the statutes for the altar on the day it is constructed, so that burnt offerings may be sacrificed on it and blood may be splattered on it:

You are to give a young bull from the herd as a sin offering to the Levitical priests who are of the family of Zadok, who approach Me to minister before Me, declares the Lord GOD.

You are to take some of its blood and put [it] on the four horns of the [altar], on the four corners of the ledge,… and all around the rim; thus you will cleanse the altar and make atonement for it.

Then you are to take away the bull for the sin offering and burn it in the appointed part of the temple area outside the sanctuary.

On the second day you are to present an unblemished male goat… as a sin offering, and the altar is to be cleansed as it was… with the bull.

When you have finished the purification, you are to present a young,… unblemished bull and an unblemished ram from the flock.

You must present them before the LORD; the priests are to sprinkle salt on them and sacrifice them [as] a burnt offering to the LORD.

For seven days you are to provide a male goat daily for a sin offering; you are also to provide a young bull… and a ram from the flock, both unblemished.

For seven days the priests are to make atonement for the altar and cleanse it; so they shall consecrate it.

At the end of these days,… from the eighth day on, the priests are to present your burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar. Then I will accept you, declares the Lord GOD.’”
